This foraging and cooking classic was first published in 1964 and has continued to be one of America's most appreciated works on the subject of seafood. As a young man, Euell Gibbons kept his family alive during the Dust Bowl era by gathering wild foods. In later years he foraged for seafood all over the coastlines of North America and even Hawaii. He drew on his extensive experience and research to write his "Stalking" series, books which have entered the American lexicon and which remain the starting point for serious foragers. Euell Gibbons tells how to find marvelous food in every coastal area of North America. This book contains numerous drawings for identification and hundreds of recipes and cooking tips from chowders and clambakes to simple epicurean treats such as boiled periwinkles dipped in melted butter.
Stalking the Wild Asparagus, Stalking the Healthful Herbs, and Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop. Part inspiration, part identification, part cookbook. Full of wit and wisdom. Essential reference works.
Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop by Euell Gibbons (Crown Publishing Group 1987) (641.694). This is a guidebook for gathering wild foods at the seashore by the master at locating wild sustenance. Remember, this is the man who uttered the immortal line, in reference to a pine cone, "Many parts are edible." This book is both hilarious and informative, and it has the all-time best title. My rating: 9/10, finished 2007.
This was an excellent book. I love the cover, the illustrations, his first hand accounts of foraging from the sea, and the recipes sound delicious. I only have one thing that could heve been changed to make this book really awesome. I did not like how the recipes were in the text of the book. They were not their own seperate entity on the page. It makes it a bit difficult to find if you want to use one, but ofcourse this is minor. So thanks Euell Gibbons for a great book!
Gibbons wrote many books about the pleasures and benefits of gathering wild food and the natural history involved - kind of a combination of travel, survival, and nature.
