The Dunne Family #2

The First Proposal

Rate this book
It was a blow to Persephone “Percy” Blake’s vanity to discover that she’d somehow become a spinster aunt. It’s certainly not what she set out to be. She had just been working away in her father’s library, cataloging historical documents. Then one day she looked up to find that ten years had passed and she was firmly on the shelf. Now, with the recent passing of her father, the country estate and the library are long gone. She’s living as a poor relation on the less than freely given charity of her sister and acting as a de facto governess for her nieces and nephews. A more ungrateful, spoiled and thoroughly rotten bunch has never existed!

And then it happens. Her nephew’s kite, which she told him not to fly, becomes tangled in the limbs of a tree next door. It’s either retrieve it at the cost of her own dignity or face her sister’s wrath for not properly supervising her charges as, after all, it’s the least she can do in exchange for room and board. Percy climbs the fence and finds herself in a wonderland of lush booms.

Alone in this house since his sister’s recent marriage, Algernon Dunne is bored. So bored that he’s taken up gardening in order to pass his time. After all, there’s only so much brandy a man can consume in a given day without feeling wretched for it. And he’s found that despite the tame nature of his new hobby, there’s something satisfying in cultivating the perfect bloom. It’s teaching him patience and also the one thing he’s always been missing in his life… humility. Nature might bow to him, after all, but only on her own terms. Gardening has brought him clarity and peace.

That is until a ranting, cursing, fireball of a woman comes over his garden wall in a cascade of pink skirts and sends them both tumbling to the ground. One look at her lovely brown eyes and her kissable lips, and Algernon is well and truly sunk. Now he just has to convince her that love at first sight can apply to much more than just his garden… and sometimes The First Proposal is the only one a woman really needs.

Fun times in this Regency novella that runs the gamut from INSTA-lust or love, very bad relatives, and how to handle a scandal in Regency England then HEA.

The hero has just decided he needs to get married. The impulse is so intense he actually proposes to his well-born mistress. She refuses. Enter stage right…the heroine. The heroine who has an absolutely terrible sister. The sister is cheap and the worst mother (outside of Medea). She’s so desperate to keep her sister as an unpaid governess to her six horrible children, and sis is prepared to go to the mattresses and destroy her sister’s reputation to do it. The last we see of the bad sister is she’s been slapped by a social maven and is a pariah.

That’s pretty much it. Fast, fun and to the point. I’ll probably forget it tomorrow.

Algernon finds himself alone after his sister marries and moves out. He decides he should get married so in the prologue, he proposes to his long-time mistress (a wealthy widow) and she turns him down flat; mostly because they don't love each other. They decide to end their arrangement.

Now that Algernon isn't seeing anyone, he's more open to fate. And fate brings his neighbor Persephone (Percy) over the wall of his garden in search of her nephew's kite. It's love at first sight. Algernon is determined to court her and marry her.

Poor Percy lives on the charity of her horrid sister and is forced to be a governess to her horrible nieces and nephews. (These kids were really something else). The book follows Percy and Algernon as they try to find love while other people try to interfere and ruin it.

This was a nice little novella. I would have liked it more if the OW (ex-mistress) hadn't been mentioned quite so much, but it doesn't really cause much angst, and the h isn't really bothered by it. In fact, by the end of the book they are the best of friends. I might have rated this higher, but the "it's me, not you" parts leave me with 3 stars.

Ok this novella was almost fun!
3.25* kind.

I like the h.
The H is not so bad too (if you can overcome his disastrous meddling/spoiling of his sister's life).

I loved this plot. Daphne's deviousness and jealousy against her sister Persephone was so cruel. Although it backfired, and we are left with a very HEA. 5☆

Not a governess

Persephone aka Percy is treated worse than a governess by her own sister! Algernon has reached the age and decision to marry but scoffs at the idea of love! His former mistress is convinced he will find a love that will hit him like a ton of bricks! Percy has a jealous sister and a gossipy old harridan that loves to spot discord and gossip! Algernon is 36 and old enough to know that his is what he's been waiting on his whole life and it certainly didn't hurt that he was Percy derrier up on a wall dangling in the air! This humorous tale is delightful and sweet you really only need 1 proposal!

Nothing deep or groundbreaking but somehow enjoyable all the same. I thought the heroine and her commentary was hilarious and her zest for life despite her circumstances extremely likable.

It had many things I don’t always like—distasteful relatives, instalove, embarrassing moments, and irritating children— but it still somehow worked for me. Algernon was a little clueless but sweet and Percy was a delight. It all happened fast but I didn’t care.

I will admit though—Burke needed to get over himself . He came across as a huge jerk and really needed to get over his grudge for his wife’s sake. She was wronged more than he was and she was over it.
So stop being a jerk, man.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Even if some parts felt rushed it carried me along with it. I loved Persephone - a plump heroine - and how Algernon (it is a horrid name an I love that she made fun of it) was ridiculous but so much fun. I liked his further interactions with Burke from book 1. I'm even glad we got to read the sisters POV - made her less of a caricature and more of a desperate person.

**spoiler** Reason I bumped it down was because I felt for Daphne's children, and I can't imagine walking by knowing they've lost everything and not stopping. I imagined at least they would put the eldest boy into school and then the tables would turn and Daphne would be behaving for Percy's good favor. They are blameless after all. **spoiler**

Regardless this book was clever and easy to read. Loved the banter and the emotions and the chemistry. Loved the complete LACK of stretching misunderstandings. And loved this line

"I knew from the moment I saw that lovely bottom, I’d have you in my bed. But I knew from the moment I looked into your eyes, that I’d have you as my wife.”

Find me a man 🤣

OTT characters spoiled what was a good plot. The bookish h lives next door to the H. He avoids her family, thinks them unpleasant especially the children. Then he meets the h. Their amusing introduction catches his heart and he decides she's the one for him. There are silly women acting stupidly before the happy couple get their HEA. Too many tropes and I struggled to like the heroine. Not a book I will re-read.

I thoroughly enjoy this couple. They seem to be set in their ways. Until love hits them smack in the face. Mr. Algernon Dunne is quite lucky when he decides to pick up the hobby of gardening, & gets entwined with his Nasty Neighbor spinster sister Persephone “Percy” Blake’s.
Does that (bottom) meeting change Mr. Algernon Dunne's belief that love does take overwhelm a person's heart and soul. He didn't understand that when his sister finally left to be a respectable wife.
Now he just wants to spend every free moment to convenience Percy that he is worthy to be her husband. However, the gossip of the ton because of her selfish, shallow sister & another prominent bat puts out that Lady Blake is just a fortune hunter & not worthy of Mr. Dunn's. He should set his sights on his old mistress.
See all her sister wants is a baby sister, she treats her like one of the servants, who is required to take care of her 6 nieces & nephews. While her sister has never wanted children. Just money, prestige. That is who she got her husband. She knew Percy was interested in James. Her sister put her claws into him first. Well, now he is paying for it. He cannot keep up with the bills, afford a governess. He has attempted to keep things quiet so he can get a business venture going. But it doesn't look like that is going to work out.

Fortunately, "Percy” Blake has discovered a few pleasures to endure her miserable existence. Walking in the gardens, where she meets Mr. Dunn when she has to try to get the kite out of a tree for her nephew. Well, Mr. Dunn notices her, literally her bare behind. From there they build up a friendship & meet at times in the garden.
Where Mr. Dunn has now fallen fancy to Lady Blake & wants to prove himself to her.
She is slowly falling in love with Algernon. He has informed her that he wants to propose to her.
However, her sister conveniences her that he is just making a joke of her to make his mistress jealous. Now her heart has doubts that Mr. Dunn loves her? He cannot love such a plain girl over the beauty of his past mistress? Will, she let doubts take over her belief & trust in Algernon? Or will she take a chance to fight for her existence & be heard?

Fortunately, she has a few good friends, in the most unlikely of places, to lead her to the path of true love.
This way she can live her dungeon with her sisters & have her own life, of love, independence.
Will Percy & Algernon find true love? Or will the metalling Bitter, selfish ladies of the ton keep them apport with lies, deception? Plus what does Algernon's ex-lover want to help Percy?

Backing into a proposal away from a horrid sister

Steamy romance; marriage consummation, only 2 scenes; Mr. Algernon Dunne falls for Miss Persephone, also known as Percy at first sight from the bottom up. Her sister Daphne is viciously determined to keep Percy as unpaid labor. There is a beautiful short courtship with setup for the next story. Percy gets good baby advice from Aurora.

Felt like an entry level novel, superficial characters and no heart to them. I will keep going with the series but this was not my favourite

I'm an avid reader and I love this author's writing style. She threw me a big curve ball which I loved. You know when there is a nasty person and you know the path that will be taken? Well, C.B. didn't take me down that road - yea! As all the pieces were falling into place, I thought here we go - cookie cutter outcome what the villain had planned. But, it was like seeing a puzzle set almost completed and BOOM someone throws the pieces all over. That is what I discovered. Thankfully I didn't get the outcome I knew most author's would take me on. I am referring to the scene at the Ball.

Do the H/h fall instantly in love and desire - yes. But, I believe in love at first sight so it worked for me.
There is lovemaking, outside of marriage - heat level 4 out of 5 and described several times - which included foreplay.

A villain finally gets what's coming to her, some twists and romance, no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and steam. Loved the epilogue and I put the next story on my Amazon Wish List, in case goes on sale. Some editing issues, but nothing that you couldn't figure out. Story of Aurora and her Duke should be interesting. I did have a problem with the h becoming friends with the H's ex-mistress. (ljb)

This was a fun book to read. I loved the main characters exchanges. And how they first meet is unforgettable. It includes a high fence and a stuck skirt and a full moon. :)

I liked that the hero stayed true (personality wise) from the previous story. He made me laugh because his relationship with his brother in law was so relatable/realistic. I just really enjoyed him.

The ring exchange I laughed out loud!

“I have 3 betrothal rings in my pocket…because I couldn’t for the life of me think which one you’d like best…you could have them all if you would just agree to be my wife.”

“Give me one of those rings.”
“Which one?”
“I don’t care. But if I have to be in the same room as your former mistress, I want to know precisely where I stand in things.”
“For the record, this is not how I planned to do things.”
“You have 2 more rings to try and get it right.”
“Right,… I imagine we’ll be keeping all 3, then.”
“ I suppose that depends on how well you do in round 2.”

I truly enjoyed this book. I love spinster stories so that definitely added to the book's appeal. Persephone is a fun and appealing character who finds herself in a less than desirable position forced to act as governess to her sister's unruly children if she wants a roof over head. She handles some of the stress of her situation by talking to herself - I can definitely relate to this practice and it added a positive touch of humour. Humour played a fun part in this sweet romance and the much routed for happily ever after ending. My only reservation from a 5 star rating was some problems with editing and/or typographical errors. These had no effect on the book's appeal to me or to the story development but some may find it disconcerting.

SHE WAS WHAT HE NEEDED HE WAS WHAT SHE WANTED

PERCY a very outspoken spinster tends to say what she thinks, she had nowhere to go her SISTER Daphne offered her a place with her and treated as a servant. Daphne degraded her whenever she could, Percy was expected to be governess to her six horrible children, sleep in the attic.
Algernon Dunn was the next door neighbour he could not stand the family, but he did like the voice he heard over the garden wall of the governess, who was treated badly by the entire family. He had never seen her until the day she was ordered to climb over the wall to get the kite.
HIS LIFE CHANGED AS HE DEFINITELY SAW HER !
I LOVED THIS GREAT FOLLOW ON FROM BOOK ONE ENJOYABLE READ.

This was such a fabulous story and audio!
There is something about Chasity Bowlin's story-ability which I just love. She somehow manages to infuse a bit of humour into all the shenanigans and angst of falling in love as well as someone who would love to make the romance fall apart. Every single time!
Totally awesome from my point of view.
In the audiobook which I have just finished listening to, we have the really pleasing and entertaining voice acting of Lillian Yves and Vincent Lee Grayson. This pair of entertainers embrace the essence of the story and help it come alive.
So much talent between these three! I have enjoyed it all so much!
I listened to a promotional copy of the audiobook version and this is my voluntary review of it.

Truly enjoyed this story

Though a novella, I really loved the story of Algernon and Percy. We see Algernon in the first book of the series and he was not an overly likeable gentleman. It was good to see him fall fast and hard when he does find love. Percy was a a breath of fresh air to what we would typically see in recency romance and loved her character. The book was written in a different style than the authors other books I have read. She has such a fabulous ability to make each series unique and is able to draw in the reader. I would recommend and looking forward to Aurora's story.

Amazing

Love at first sight.. The heroine is being horribly mistreated by her sister and the hero was rejected by his former lover.. She needs a way out somehow to escape her sister and her sister's horrid kids and one day when she climbs over a gate and get caught in the tree she finds herself in love instantly with the neighbor and he has been admiring her voice for months but he can't stand her sister or her sister's kids.. But then again he is willing to walk over mountains for her.. Love has a way of always changing our mindset.. I loved this story from beginning to end! I definitely look forward to the next book in this series

Weaker than the previous one which was already bad. I liked the banter between the leads but the insta-love was TOO MUCH! I hated the sister but felt bad for the kids. The brother-in-law needed to make an appearance.

Also, I hate when the wife and the mistress become friends. Good God! How can you be friends with a woman who was in a physical relationship with your husband for two years and was proposed to by him?

Further, I don't like it when authors can't keep track of timelines. Olivia is already pregnant by the time she marries Burke as mentioned in the first book. In this one, "almost a year of being married" is mentioned and yet Burke has to inform Algie about the fact that they are expecting! Give me a break!

Excellent!

Algernon, confirmed bachelor, and Persephone, on the shelf , poor, acting governess to her sister 's children, are a very unlikely couple! When she climbs over his garden wall to rescue her nephew's kite, he is directly below to rescue her. For him, it is love at first sight but she is much slower to accept his love! Their misadventures, thwarted by her jealous sister and Percy's insecurities, finally reach their HEA! They are aided by unexpected people!

It's a nice romantic story between two interesting and really lonely characters that have almost give up on happiness. Percy's sister Daphne is horrible and she would try to ruin every chance of love for her. But of course love prevails! A quick and sweet romance for a couple of hours in the afternoon with a cup of coffee and some cookies to enjoy it!

Finally!

I always love anything that Ms. Bowlin writes. Her stories are witty and sensual. Love at first sight (or voice) has never been written better!

Percy and Algernon get their story. The crusty Algernon and the put upon spinster were made for each other. From her first climb across his wall, he was convinced that she was his destiny. So sweet and wonderful. I

The White Hats Win!

Finally, the good guys win! The lying hateful excuse for a human being let alone sister was put in her rightful place! I love true love and honesty, both of which Mr. AND Mrs. Dunne have! I hate liars and mean, evil people and am glad they found their rightful place.
Kudos once again for luring me away from reality and into the throes of honest, true love.

Another charming read by Chastity Bowlin

It takes a talented writer to fill a novella with every aspect of a full novel. And that is exactly what Ms. Bowlin did. The main characters, Percy and Algernon are adorable. This is a true fairy tale, with a happily ever after. You will love it!

I love chasity bowlins books but I have to admit this one felt a bit stale. While I liked the characters I never really felt any type of chemistry between them. It was just very two dimensional. So I hope I liked the story or the possibility of the story, it was not my favorite book.

Meh

While I am aware this is a novella, the whole story seemed rushed. And for as short as the book was way too many pages were spent on sexual scenes.

This had the potential of being a good story if it wasn't so short.

Entertaining but needs a proofreader

The story of Percy and Donne was satisfying but i was distracted by all the misspelled words in the text. Surely the author deserves more respect than a careless reproduction of her work.

A delightful continuation of the series

This is another delightful and extremely engaging story that continues a great series. This (steamy towards the end), plot has the heroin having to contend with a spiteful and conniving sister to attain a joyful outcome.

This is another amazing read by Chasity. The characters are interesting and engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between the Viscount and Alegnron. Percy definitely deserved to find love.
