Step back into the world of Solaris

I'm so excited that SOVEREIGN SACRIFICE is out in the world! Air Awakens: Vortex Chronicles is a series I've had planned for about seven years - ever since writing the original Air Awakens series. While it's a little different from the original series (as all my series vary), it's so near and dear to my heart.

REMINDER: You don't need to read the original Air Awakens series to read Vortex Chronicles! You can start with VORTEX VISIONS

If you want to start Air Awakens: Vortex Chronicles so you can read SOVEREIGN SACRIFICE, click below to grab the books:
Vortex Visions, #1
Chosen Champion, #2
Failed Future, #3
Sovereign Sacrifice, #4
Crystal Caged, #5

A few (spoiler free) things I want to tease/point out for Sovereign Sacrifice and Vortex Chronicles:

The last 3 chapters of Failed Future (book 3) are critical
Pay attention to Sovereign Sacrifice around 50% of the way through
Across the whole series, it's all in the details
If you have/do read Air Awakens, there's a word echoed from Vortex Chronicles that's the key

Happy reading!

Man I loved this book. Definitely one of the authors best works hands down. The story just flows so nicely and there it's major character development, but it isn't forced at all!

Vi is all impulse and Taavin is all caution, they must work together to figure out how to use their dueling personalities to fight for a different future.

What you can really appreciate is a totally new cast of characters, and while that upsets me (because I miss the old ones) these new ones are so much fun!

Fiera is a spitfire who takes life by the horns. She and Vi have an interesting relationship that I won't delve into because you all deserve the joy of exploring it for yourself.

This book has me questioning a couple things though... Like if Vi succeeds in her mission, what role she will play in this world? She cannot be who she once was, nor can she truly ever BE Vi in this world either.

Stupendous installation that will leave you with a well-worth it book hangover!

Probably my favorite installment of the Vortex Chronicles so far. I feel like the character development and story line were handled very well. I am not going to go into what this book is about because hello it is the fourth book in the series but I enjoyed myself a lot. After book three ended I was intrigued with the direction the plot was going in. It is a trope that doesn't always succeed, but when it does, it is wonderful to see. I don't think that Elise Kova did an awesome job with said trope, however I think she succeeded in what she set out to do. This particular novel was paced extremely well. We hit the gas from the get go and when plot threads happened it felt right.

I did enjoy some of the new and not so new characters we were introduced to. The villain this time around was literally there just to be that, a villain. I don't necessarily enjoy those kinds of villains because they add no substance to anything. Vi was a much more tolerable protagonist this time around. I definitely think that was due to her current situation. That is not to say she still isn't insufferable at times, because she is.

We did get to see and unearth some backstory regarding the world which to me was the highlight of this novel. We have been getting bits and pieces of the history, but we were really diving head first into the world and politics. That is something I adore in my books quite a lot. Elise Kova is hitting it out of the park world building wise in the series compared to Air Awakens. Vortex Chronicles is showcasing her growth as a storyteller, which I just love to see.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the concluding novel to this series. Sovereign Sacrifice once again ended in a very mysterious way where pretty much anything can happen. I mean there are so many paths Elise Kova has set up for herself. I am eager to see which one she chooses to go down.

Nope. Didn’t like the twist that turned this series around. The story is still well-written and many may absolutely love it. I just couldn’t get into the 93 different lives, coming back again and again, twisting time etc. etc. Guess I’m just a bit more linear in my storyline preferences.

I will admit I went into this book with some reservations, but I was really hoping to be surprised. Failed Future had been my favorite book in the series so far, and then the ending happened. I don’t like time travel stories, as I find they’re extremely difficult to pull off well. Unfortunately this seemed to fall into a lot of those same pitfalls.

The pacing of this book was definitely slower, which I don’t mind if there’s an eventual payoff. However, this book suffered from a lot of waiting, impulsive decisions, and eventually a rather large I-told-you-so. I get Vi’s character is supposed to be hard-headed, driven, and hopeful, but she toes the line into idiocy on more than a few occasions. More often than not I found myself frustrated by her actions, which seemed more petulant and immature than anything.

Taavin is once again in the book. (Okay, that was salty and I apologize). He plays his usual role as the voice of reason - no pun intended, and is the overly cautious counterpoint to Vi’s recklessness. I don’t mind Taavin’s character in the capacity he serves as the Voice, but I can’t buy into the romance. We’re just glossing over the end events of FF, but it’s fine because new world? I don’t know. Neither Vi not Taavin were particularly enjoyable characters in this one, and then together just grated.

I just feel like this book was ultimately a placeholder and a way to ‘meet’ Fiera and an alternate Tiberus than the despicable bastard we’re all so familiar with in AA. Seeing a kinder side to hated characters is another thing I’m not fond of in stories, and both that and the time travel thing are entirely subjective preferences on my part.

Honestly, I feel a little bad leaving a 2 star review, because I love AA and I think Elise is a good writer. There were just a lot of things in this installment that ultimately didn’t land for me, and left me feeling annoyed or frustrated, and occasionally bored. I still plan on reading the conclusion of the series, and hope this was just a bit of a dip in the story.

I was sent this book as an advance copy by the author for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.

3.5 stars

I went into this book having some contrasting feelings about Failed Future's ending but I have to say I actually really liked how things worked out here.

Because this is the fourth book in a series and basically the very premise of this installment hangs on a twist that happens in the last few chapters of the previous one, it's really hard to talk about the plot without giving anything away, so please only keep reading if you've finished Failed Future!!!

I freaking love time travel. I don't always reach for books that have it in them though, because it can be tricky and I feel like many books leave to many questions open and disregard a lot of time travelling rules. I had some of these problems here as well, but I also found it easy to disregard and focus more on the plot and characters.

I was also glad there was less Taavin because I'm still not feeling the romance (and let's be honest, at this point in the series I'm never going to get into it), and I like how the focus was more on the female friendships that Vi was able to make.

Overall, I enjoyed this for the plot and the characters and I can't wait to see where the next (final??) book is going to take us!

What a follow up to the last book!

I enjoyed seeing Vi adapt to a new world, driven by a focus to save her friends and family. Vi definitely made her share of mistakes but she never despaired despite all that didn’t work out the way she had hoped.

Two things that confused me though...
1) Vi’s relationship with Taavin... she’d just killed him in the last book and was torqued at him for betraying her, yet she pretty much instantly starts having feeling for him, right at the beginning. He betrayed her... how? I just didn’t think the relationship developed slowly enough. It was kind of insta love.
2) Vi was recreated and had no memory of her past lives... she kept asking Taavin if she’d done “whatever” in a past life, yet she has no problem remembering him. Why? Why does she remember him? In the beginning of Vortex Visions, she doesn’t have any idea who Taavin is... so why is it different now?

I wonder if Vi knows what Aldrick did to the Crystal Caverns, because she better be prepared to nudge that a different way if so...

Those two issues aside, I enjoyed the story and am anxiously looking forward to the next installment!!

Loving this series, it is so clever and I never have any idea about what will happen next. Also I think the character development of the lead female Vi is utterly brilliant. Nervous to read the final book but also cannot wait!

I was so thrilled to receive an arc of this fourth installment from Elise and I will say I did have my issues with it, a little more so than the last installment, but overall I did enjoy it and I think this is one of those installments that simply lead you into the next, especially since the next book will be the final in the series.

I missed Vi and her impossible mission to be the champion of Yargen. I missed the world, and the magic, and the story.

I will say that I regret not reading the Golden Guard trilogy before hand, simply because some of the honorable mentions in this installment would have meant so much more to me had I read those, so I recommend it if you haven’t read this yet.

Spoilery bits...

So first and foremost, the last installment left off with Vi going through time. A HUGE slap in the face. I honestly was shaken by all that had happened in that last installment, and so I had no clue where this one was going to take us.

Needless to say there were some sick revelations to start us off. Vi having gone through this vortex 93 times? Holy crap. Taavin having to witness each one, and how they ultimately failed? Deep. Vi being REBORN into this new world where her grandparents are just about to get together, meaning though, that her old world doesn’t exist anymore. Holy crap. All of the story we knew... the first series, the Golden Guard—it doesn’t exist anymore!! My god, that pushed me right off of the cliff and into Satans hands. I am still dead.

I think when Vi finally got in good with Fiera, the journey fell a little flat for me. Vi was kind of on the sidelines a lot. A mysterious traveler that Fiera kept around because there was something about her that was worth trusting. There was mostly conversation and not a lot going on. Vi was simply getting the crystal sword, which was fine, but it made the journey feel kind of slow in comparison with the last three installments.

One thing I’m still trying to remind myself is that the romance isn’t as prevalent in this series as it was in the last and so it doesn’t happen as often, or play a huge role. The one thing though, is that there IS a romance. Vi and Taavin have something, and they have been kept apart for so long. So I was hoping in this fourth installment that they would find a way to be closer—despite the fact that she killed him a 93rd time, trapping him in her watch.

To me it felt like they had taken a step backwards. Mostly because Taavin felt different. After revealing that he has watched her fail 93 times, he doubts her more often than he did in the past. Where as in the past he was much more supportive, and kind. Now he doubts everything Vi has planned.

As a whole, they felt...distant, different. And I want them to be how they were when they finally met and grew comfortable around each other. I want them to be straightforward with each other (as this is something that hasn’t fully happened yet). I want them to just BE together, and have some happiness besides the chaos. They had a few very small moments in this installment, but I wouldn’t mind some more...with Taavin being a solid form. Let’s fashion him a crystal bracelet so they can make love 😂.

ANYWAYS, back to the actual plot. As I said in the beginning, this felt like a bridge. A bridge into an epic finale. Especially with Vi’s last plan to save everyone. I feel like this entire installment holds importance for that reason. For her to let Raspien out and end him when he is solid and actually present. I’m excited to see how it all unfolds.

I do think there are a few things I want to see though:
Vi and Taavin having their true romantic moment.
Vi seeing Aldrick and Vhalla again
More background on the whole time jumping situation.
More info about Yargen and that jazz
Aaaand that’s all I can think of for now.

But once again, overall I did enjoy this installment. 🖤. I am dying for that ending.

"Vi Solaris... You have done nothing wrong. The burden on you is one that no one can understand, not even I. And you handle it with all the grace of your forefathers. You do your parents proud."
WAAAAAH! Can you guys hear my sobs? Because those are some of the most beautiful words I've ever read and my heart broke into a million pieces over them.
Anyway, I. AM. MIND. BLOWN. over here.
I have lost count of how many books I've read of Elise's so I have no idea what to say anymore except this: She still manages to surprise me with every single one. I won't go into detail about anything, of course, but I am in absolute awe of how her mind works. Every word, every sentence... every single movement in each page reads with such powerful purpose, I can't even put it into words. It makes me weirdly proud and honored to be reading her works at all. (All hail the Queen!)
This world specifically is just so deliciously complex that I never want to see it end, even though I know it has to do just that at some point.
The last book left me REELING so hard that it took me a few months to fully wrap my mind around (and accept) what had just happened, resulting in me taking so long in finishing this book. That, and also the fact that I wasn't in a fantasy mood for a while. BUT, I am back into this world, just in time to have seen book 5 released. I have it in my hands now but I am so scared to read it... I am so not ready to let these characters go!!!!!
One of the things I will say about Vi though is that that woman is NOT healthy for my sanity. All of her actions gave me SO MUCH ANXIETY, that I could barely keep myself from reading this with fingers over my eyes. I know that's impossible but she had me on the edge of my seat with everything she did. If I had to call her something, it would have to be: Frustratingly Heroic.
I also have to mention that the way this series is written, nothing and nobody is safe which added to my anxiety for sure. I can only hope I make it through the next book with my wits somewhat intact, or else I might just have to give up on fantasy. (jk, but not really?)
Aaaand, once again, I have to honorably mention my hunk of a man, Taavin, and how he drives me absolutely crazy. Everything that comes out of his ridiculously handsome mouth is such perfection that I melt during every single scene he's in, without fail. Oh, and everything he DOES is such perfection too. Ugh.
I'll just see myself out before I find out a way to steal him away from Vi....

I enjoyed Vi's growth by the end of the book. I need to remind myself that she is young. There was a few times she pushed the limits of bold and stepped into reckless.

I still don't care for Taavin, and don't feel their love. The world and other characters intrigue me enough to keep reading. I am enjoying the overlap of characters we are seeing from her time line. As well as the new path they are taking to save the world.

Onto book 5!!

Second read review:
I. 👏🏾FORGOT. 👏🏾HOW. 👏🏾GOOD.👏🏾 THIS.👏🏾 BOOK.👏🏾 IS. 👏🏾

I do NOT rate books five stars for nothing, yall.

This might be my favorite out of the first four books now. Maybe it was because I wasn't able to solely focus on the storyline as much the first time I read it because I had so many other things going on, but I just did not realize how good Sovereign Sacrifice really is! The character development is SPOT ON, and here's why:
1. I'm not going to lie, I've been a little skeptical of Vi and Taavin's relationship from book 1, but it feels a lot more real in this book. I think I saw glimpses of what it could become in the first three books, and ironically (iykyk lol), it feels a lot more tangible here.
2. THE GANG.😩 Elise truly has a talent for creating heartwarming characters that feel like people you've known for years, and that is definitely something I felt in Sovreign Sacrifice. Vi learns how to harness her powers to feel confident in the strong woman she is despite the many times she's been broken, and I think that's how she comes to form such strong relationships in this part of her journey.
3. Basically all of Sovreign Sacrifice relates to the original Air Awakens series, and it gives so much depth to characters that we only see glimpses of in the original series. It makes me wish every character could have their own series to star in, a sentiment I feel really speaks to just how integral each of them are to the story.

Anyways this book was amazing!
I can't believe I'm moving on to Crystal Caged now ahsnkwjeneodnmsjdv😱😱😱
I'm literally so scared. I have no idea how this could possibly end in the way I want it to, but if anyone can pull it off it's Elise!🤞🏾

See this review and more on Books and Ladders!

Honestly, I'm glad I'm almost done this series. What should have been a triumphant return to the Air Awakens series, and a new way for people to get interested and excited, has only left me completely disappointed.

This book, much like it's earlier versions, feels as thought nothing has happened until the very end. There is something about this series that it tends to have huge cliffhangers with every book that get resolved pretty easily in the first couple chapters of the next book. Then nothing happens until the last two chapters again. I am over it, to be honest.

I will finish this series because I've invested a lot of time and money into the audiobooks but I'm not sure that this is one I would recommend to people - even those who are die hard Air Awakens fans. I do hope that the A Trial of Sorcerers series is better, since it takes place in the same world, but I'm not holding my breath.

Once again miss Kova did it <3

I had some suspicion with the end of book 3 and a trop I am not a fan of (won't say which one - spoiler alert otherwise^^), but this trop was artfully woven into the story.

This book is action packed, Vi is bolder and makes mistakes which is good in a way ... she has flaws like everyone else and is not the typical heroes who saves the day with a snap of her finger, she works for it.

Can't wait to dive into book 5 - the last installment in the series - need to buy it first haha

I actually got through this one so quickly I didn't even have a moment to put this on "currently reading." I just picked it up after book three and ran with it.

Firstly... this series is significantly less romance focused than Air Awakens. I think this was the author's attempt to offer a balance for those who found the romance heavy focus of the previous series to detract from the action and adventure of the rest of the plot. In fact, Taavin himself is greatly reduced in presence in this book overall.

Again, this wasn't quite what I anticipated, as I figured the story would have a wider focus on all the crystal weapons, not just on the sword and on Fiera, though, with her on the cover, I guess it makes sense that this entire book is about Vi beginning this incarnation as the traveler changing the hands of fate (apparently she's done it 93 times prior) and that that growth would unfold in a place/time where the fate is personal, concerning the life of her grandmother and the future of her father.

I don't much to add. Overall, a fine read. I'm not over the moon about it and the lesser degree of romance in this one leaves me a bit wanting, but can't say it was a bad read. Thus far, I've enjoyed myself.

I'm not quite sure what to anticipate going into the finale of this series, but I hope it's as easily devoured as these last two.

Also, I do want to say that I was given a free ebook omnibus of all five books in this series for the purposes of review by the author, but my thoughts remain wholly my own. The only stipulation (and it was flexible, should circumstances pop up to prevent it) put on me and that I agreed to post my reviews by a certain time. Very standard stuff for review copies.

So that was fantastic. Honestly I wish I had read the golden guard trilogy though. I feel dumb for having not read it and know I’ll have to read it, probably once I finish this lovely series of I’m being honest.

Though I loved the story and Vi definitely had her share of hardship, getting in with Fiera and her crowd seemed all too easy for Vi. I get Fiera believes she was guided into her life by fate and she trusts Vi because of that feeling but I think I would have liked to see Vi really have to work for her way into Fiera’s company.

The relationship between the two, three with Zira, was amazing though, and seeing the appearance of Deneya (probably spelt that wrong) made me so happy. I can’t wait to get the final book. I’ll likely sequester myself away from any distractions to read it.

In-depth review to follow - for now, my fav Taavin Vi moment. I need these two to live happily ever after… I REALLY DO.
“Are you really the same person who had me sailing to Meru?” Vi said softly. “You fret over me leaving the castle now.”
“I’m not the same person.” He gazed at her through his lashes. “That man didn’t understand the cost of losing you—not for the world, and not for him.”
“But I am the same woman who made that journey,” she said tenderly, tightening her fingers around his. “I am the same woman who boarded a vessel and left her home behind, who fought pirates and won, who accidentally made crystals. I might look like those ninety-two other women, but I’m not. I’m me, Taavin. Regardless of who I look or sound like, I am unique. This chance, this very moment, is ours alone. Don’t condemn me for others’ failures.”
He nodded. “I know.” She wasn’t sure she could believe him. “Which is why I’ll merely ask you to be safe on this excursion.”

“Think of time as a river, flowing along. There are three types of things you will find in that river.
“The first are leaves floating along—these are people, pulled along by the course of fate, thrown this way and that by the flow of the world around them.
“The second are stones—things that are immovable. They will happen regardless of what you do. The river runs around them, its current and pace distorted by these events.the third thing in the river are the dams and floodgates you create to guide the currents. The few locations where the river is quiet enough, or shallow enough, or narrow enough, to change how it flows.”

I liked this part better than the first three, maybe because Vi had a unique chance to change the past but, in the end, had got her lesson. This part is more dramatic and intense, and I have to say I liked Fiera's character. However, I felt like this book had a missing piece of the puzzle, as I needed to know more about the Fiera-Tiberis love story. There were a couple of good scenes between them, but it was unclear how exactly they moved from enemies to lovers.

I enjoyed the book and finally moving to the last part of the series

Oh goodness be ready for a cliffhanger. Such an interesting read. I loved the backstory that was given along with how it grew the character. As always Elise Kova wrote a thrilling book I couldn’t put down. Definitely recommend either book or audio book as the narrator has just gotten better as the series progressed.

This has possibly been the best book in the series so far, I think the story and the character development are finally really moving along. It’s really interesting seeing these characters from the original Air Awakens series. The amount of longing I feel in every book each time Vhalla or Aldrik is mentioned is unreal, and every time something bad happens, I instantly cry.
