Tales of Grimm Hollow #1

Scarlet Huntress

Rate this book
The woods have always housed my nightmares.

It's where my grandmother was torn apart by wolves. Where, for years, I was held captive by evil shape-shifting witches. I thought it was for my Shaman abilities. I was wrong.

But their ritual failed. Instead of dying, I survived, while another’s blood stained the forest floor.

In my escape, I discovered Grimm Hollow—a place deep in the forest in which I hoped to hide. The secret town teems with magic and a Shifter who wants to help me hone my skills. But the big, bad witchy-wolf is hot on my scarlet tail, and he won't hesitate to destroy everyone and everything to get me back—or kill me.

Hiding is no longer an option. Instead, I must become the hunter.

Bring on the big, bad wolf.

*Grimm Hollow books are loosely based on the Grimm Fairy Tales in a modern paranormal setting.*

LeAnn Mason is an author of YA/NA Urban Science Fantasy with prominent crime elements, her debut novel Illusionary is set to release March 23, 2018.
When she's not writing, she can be found out with her hubby and two munchkins around their Oklahoma home either herding chickens or racing ATVs.
Though currently horseless, she has been riding since her early teen years and adores the giant animals so much that she wrote them into her story. Music is another constant in her life, a literal muse to her writing, so it was no surprise to find it entrenched in the pages as well.

Superbly written, executed and edited, The Scarlet Huntress will leave you wanting more of the story. Fantasy, love, magic, witches, and shifters...yes, please. And that cover?!?

I'm not one to enjoy fairy tales or their retellings, so I was surprised that this one was different enough to be interesting and spin it's own story. The characters are well rounded, and the plot is solid. I was rooting for the main character as if she were my friend. The story flowed with an even pace and is full of action. A major pet peeve of mine is over descriptiveness or purple prose, especially for the sake of page count, but there was none of that here. Every piece of information was vital to the story, even when I questioned how things will fit together later. It was a complete puzzle put together slowly.

My only major gripe is wanting a deeper romance factor. It had an insta-love vibe which kind of annoyed me.

Overall, I am impressed, and surprised at how much I liked The Scarlet Huntress. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the continuation of "Scarlet's" story, and this author.

This is so not the same Red Riding Hood from your youth, and I am so glad about.
This book is so addicting that once you start reading it, you will not be able to stop. The characters and storyline is so well written that you feel like you are there with them. I really need some more

OH MY LORDY. This book was freaking AHMAZING! I mean, I knew it would be but still!
I love this new world that Leann has built, and I love retellings on all of these fairytales!

Allya is such a strong character. She goes through so much, endures so much pain, but she still manages to keep her head up and is able to find happiness.

The story pulled me in right from the beginning, and I did not want to put it down! It was intense and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

I love Allya’s personality, her snark. It had me laughing a lot. She is sassy and really doesn’t have a filter. It’s great!

I can’t wait to learn more about this world and Grimm Hollow. And I can’t wait to read the other girls stories!

Gah, that bad guys in this book, made me want to jump into it and punch them in their stupid faces. UGH. They are the worst! And if the first big bad is this intense, and I can’t wait to see what she cooks up for the future books!

I love love love Allya and Hunter/Jason’s relationship. I love their banter back and forth. And they just make sense.

And that Grace lady, I don’t know man, I have feelings about her. Not good ones either lol.

I honestly am just so excited for more books from Leann. I loved the Minefield series and I need more books from her! She is a great writer, and her world building is so stinking good!

Read this book guys, you won’t regret it. It has sass, fire, love, evil, shifters, mages…I mean what more do you really want?!
Go get it!

This is going to be a great series. I can tell already. I'm not normally big on re-tellings, because I find them unimaginative for using a pre-existing plotline. Well, this is NOT that. Mason has used the bare essence of a fairy tale -- just the best parts -- as almost a lead in, and then blossomed from there, crafting a whole new universe of contemporary paranormal magic -- and horror. Her characters are bold, brazen and crafty, each unique and compelling. Her villains are devilish and manipulative. The romance is perfectly built and doesn't overtake the action or employ instalove, thank goodness. The plot? Twisting, shocking, and always mounting. Welcome to Grimm Hollow, a town where fiction is fact, and stumbling in, our main character is in for a surprise, as are we the readers. I loved getting to know the wonders in this world, though this book barely touched on all it contains, and cannot wait for the next in the series to learn more! Highly recommend for fans of fairy tale re-tellings, paranormal, a touch of fantasy and romance, and a lot of bad-a$$ self-discovery in the most empowering of character developments. I'm ready to climb into my Kindle and move right on in to Grimm Hollow ... maybe with Allya and Hunter as my guides.

Nice retelling of red riding hood .

It‘s dark and tells a Story of a Girl who find‘s herself.

It would have been so much better with a Bit More romance, for me it just wasn‘t enough,

And the ending: please....

„the Vomit Kiss“? Yeahh a disappointment

From the first page, this Little Red Riding Hood retelling pulled me in with its darker, creepier tone—a deliciously sinister atmosphere that kept me turning pages.

This dark tale is lightened by Allya’s sass, humor, and unapologetic kick-assery. Throw in flirty banter, fun training sequences with a ridiculously hot Sentinel, and you’ve got a recipe for an addictive read.

Allya’s journey is so much more than fighting villains (though she does plenty of that, too!). Watching her overcome a heartbreaking, terrorizing past to embrace her wolf half and claim her own power was inspiring. With the help of her newfound friends, she not only overcomes her fears but also discovers a magical place to call home—a sanctuary as captivating as the characters themselves.

If you love fairytales with bite, humor, and heart, Scarlet Huntress by LeAnn Mason will devour your attention in the best way.

**Definitely Not Your Typical Red Riding Hood**

I loved this story! The characters, the world building and the storyline were perfection!
The characters were especially fun, especially Red AkA Allya and Jason AkA Hunter! The storyline was beyond thrilling and had me hooked from the very beginning, with world building that has you totally entralled!

A very twisted tale with a very happy ending! I'm looking forward to reading the next book!

Red Riding Hood in another retelling that was really good and kept me intrigued!
Submerge yourself in new the new story full of magic, secrets and getting to know yourself, even maybe some growing up.
The story has great pace and characters that were for sure not your usual ones. You could find similarities to the original story, but new elements created a completely new full-blooded story with the kind of RED I loved.

I always love a new twist on a fairy tale retelling and Scarlet Huntress did not disappoint. Allya is portrayed a red riding hood, but this story isn't like you know. Witches, shamans, and shifters make for a story that keeps you needing to know what will happen next. Looking forward to what this Grim Hollow series brings next.

In this Little Red Riding Hood retelling, Allya was held captive by evil shape-shifting witches but escaped after a ritual failed. She escaped and discovered Grimm Hollow, a magical secret town where Shifters and other magic people live.
I love how LeAnn pulled from the tale of Little Red Riding and turned it into a modern day fantasy. Allya transforms from an abused orphan raised by those that murdered her grandmother into a determined warrior and protector.
I look forward to reading more in the Grim Hollows series!

Favorite fairytales with a twist!!

I am so thrilled to have found this series. I love a good retelling of classic fairytales with a dark twist.

In this first book we meet Allya, aka Red or Scarlet and Jason aka Hunter. I love the way these characters meet and the fact that's it's not an instantaneous love. In fact she doesn't even realize she had already met him (will have to read to find out why).

I loved that through the book I was catching little nods to other upcoming stories/fairytale characters. All the different kinds of magic made it fun. Shamans and witches and shifters.

What I most loved about the shifters was how the author did not pigeon hole herself with just one type of shifter, you could come across any animal from a rabbit to a bear and not be sure if they were fully animal or not. Also, the way shifters became shifters, not all shifters got their animals the same way, the inner turmoil this causes the MC is well written.

If you are a fan of YA with a little clean romance then I would highly recommend this book. It is suitable for anyone high school and above.

There are some instances of abuse, but is well written in a way that gets the point without being very triggering. Being that I suffered abuse I can say nothing in this book triggered me in any way.

Why are you still reading my review when you should be reading the book? I'm off to read book 2 so stay tuned for my thoughts on this.

This was cute but extremely rushed. The next installment is about a friend which is confusing as so much of Ally’s story was unresolved.

Easy read, storyline is good (personality think it could have been better). But enjoyable enough that I want to continue the series. Think Little Red Riding Hood mixed with magic. But "Red" was a prisoner, and she gained her freedom in more ways than one.

Amazing!

I’d give this book 10 stars if I could. This book is sooo good. A definite page-turner. I loved every bit of it. I had stuff to do but put it off so I could finish the book. It has a lot of romance, a little bit of fairy tale, and an amazing story! Can’t wait to start the second one!

Scarlett Huntress

This book was great and gave red riding hood vibes. She is a shaman and now a wolf shifter and runs away from home killing her brother. She adjust to life and learns to become 1 with Ebony her wolf. She is faced with her dad where she takes out the coven of dark magic.

Very pleasantly surprised

I enjoyed the references to fairy tales without directly utilizing them. I do hope the scarlet huntress loses the bulky cape for more practical attire, in red of course. Good story line, and execution of the supernatural.

Scarlett Huntress is a dark and thrilling re-telling and extension of the beloved Red Riding Hood fairy tale. Full of magic, witches and warlocks, wolf/human shifters, and even a little Native American lore, this tale is sure to capture the attention of the lovers of fantasy and fairy tale re-tellings. In the story, the main character Allya makes a smooth transition from being a scared, timid, and abused child, to a strong, well-rounded, and powerful woman that readers will love. She has a snarky attitude and a relatable, sarcastic inner dialogue that a reader can identify with, appreciate, and even get a few laughs out of. The story is only loosely based on Red Riding Hood, so there are no boring moments where the reader feels as if they have heard this before. There are several unique and mind-boggling twists to Allya's story that send the tale off in a new direction.

The supporting characters are also very interesting and many play significant and fascinating roles in the story. For example, Hunter, who teaches Allya everything she needs to know in order to mount her defense against the coven, is a strong-willed and loyal servant to the town of Grimm Hollow. This story is a great example of how a character can undergo growth through their steadfastness to a cause. Growth doesn't have to mean a fundamental change in the character.

The only part that is a little underplayed is the experience that Allya had with the coven and back history of her family. Describing this more would contribute to an understanding of Allya's current mental state and explain some of her actions better. The backstory of both Allya and her family could be a novel in itself and would be an excellent prequel to Scarlet Huntress. This is the first installment of the Tales of Grimm Hollow series, and Mason has set up a nice ending that should lead smoothly into an excellent second book.

I'm a sucker for stories based in fairy tale lands, so when I heard about Scarlet Huntress, I was excited to read it.

LeAnn Mason has created a delightful world of magical beings, where only the greedy can't seem to live harmoniously. The rest of the magical beings live in cooperation with each other, for the betterment of each other. "Red," is an escapee from a cult, whose leader is a man who is trying to be both a warlock and a shifter - usually two different classes of magical beings. Red is descended from people with powers, and the cult leader, Seth, and other cult members keeps her enslaved in order to use her as target practice for their developing powers. Red escapes at the very beginning of the book, and then spends the rest of the time trying to figure out who she really is, recovering from the trauma of her kidnapping and her grandmother's death, and learning that the world is much wider than she ever imagined. There's also a very slow burn, if you're interested in that kind of thing.

The only thing that I didn't like about this book was how quick the ending wrapped up. Two characters with almost no development appeared out of nowhere, one less logically than the other based on earlier parts of the story. Both characters could have been developed better in earlier scenes, maybe as flashbacks or dream sequences, to make this suddenness more believable.

The ARC I was offered did include a few odd formatting issues because the text is full-justified, but that did not effect the story at all.

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.

Red Riding Hood with a dark twist! It’s not your typical retelling; that is, it doesn’t follow the story to the letter. We’ve got a girl with a red cape and wolves, but from there the story diverges into a thrilling, action packed tale leaving you dying for more! Expect magic of all kinds, including shifters and witches, with a bit of Native American lore and culture embedded in this exciting story.

Allya watched her grandmother get torn apart by wolves when she was just a child, and then kept captive by evil shape-shifting witches for years afterward. Our story starts as Allya finds an opportunity to escape captivity, during a ritual gone wrong. She comes across Grimm Hollow, a secret town filled with magic, the one place where she might find safety.

Allya’s character is amazing! I loved her wit and sarcasm, and enjoyed the banter between herself and Hunter/Jason. She starts out timid and afraid, due to her years in captivity, but breaks out of her shell as the story progresses.

I can tell this is going to be a great series due to the great start and the unique twist and building on the classic tale we all know and love, as well as contemporary paranormal elements to create something amazing! Definitely a must read for anyone who loves re-tellings and YA paranormal fantasy.

**Disclaimer: I recieved an ARC of this book in return for my honest review. The book will be available for purchase on October 29th, 2019.

I loved it! The book was well paced and fleshed-out. The beginning was a bit rough, but totally worth sticking it out.

Allya is a timid character due to her circumstances, yet mentally rebels. We meet her at a turning point in her life. She suddenly has a chance to be free with all the uncertainty and responsibility that comes with that.

She meets Hunter, a capable yet frustrating individual whom she incessantly clashes with even as he helps her to gain a sense of control over her own life.

I took off one star because of the rough beginning. I didn't connect with the language and there seemed to be a lot of sayings or terms used that I wasn't familiar with, and though I could understand what was trying to be conveyed, they were a bit jarring in that they didn't feel like they belonged. However, the premise was enough to hold me and I'm really glad it was.

Seeds are planted for almost all of the characters, giving you just enough to like them and look forward to each time they pop up. This book feels like the beginning of something great and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I gave this 3 stars, only because I don’t believe it was my kind of story. I loved the idea of the story line, and I’m a big fan of retellings, but unfortunately for me, I couldn’t quite get into it.

The story line was great, and very unique. The pacing of the story was great, and everything fit together well. Which is why I’m unsure why I couldn’t get into it. I still finished it, and it ended with its fairytale ending,

I wasn’t a big fan of Allya, unfortunately she just annoyed me as a character. She was very dramatic, and over the top at time, and it’s not an aspect I like in characters. She was stubborn, and protective, and would do anything in her power to make sure she never was abused or unwanted again. She was a fighter.

I wish there was a bit more of information on the auras that she could see. I wasn’t sure what each colour aura meant, so when she seen them, and talked about the colour, it never went into any detail on how or why the auras matched that certain person. So that’s definitely something I would have like more information on.

I’m disappointed I couldn’t get into this book, but it hasn’t deterred me from this author. I’d really like to see more of this author!

This was my first time reading a book by LeAnn Mason and I was very happy to start with this!

The Scarlet Huntress is a fantastic retelling of “Little Red Riding Hood”! Between the excellent world building and a very healthy dose of supernatural beings you find yourself lost in a thrilling new world.

The plot is superbly planned and worked out, all the characters are well rounded and I found myself rooting for the main character throughout it all. She had a fierceness that she was able to hang onto through the whole book. Yes she needed training and things didn’t always go to plan. Yet she managed to keep her spirit feisty and true to herself. I love all the the different supernatural aspects that come together and deliver an ending that will have you cheering your favourites on.

All in all this was a solid 4.5 but worth the round up to 5. The only thing I would have liked more in this book would have been a more romantic connection and interaction. I think there were the beginnings of a fantastic coupledom but it never fully picked up and we were left with a promise of one.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

What a beautifully told retelling of Red Riding Hood!! This isn't the fairytale you thought you knew! Fall in love with Red in this action packed and suspenseful tale! The characters are so well fleshed out and the dialogue between them is snarky, hilarious, at times awkward and very entertaining. Red has led a pretty dismal existence and she doesn't expect things to change anytime soon. When she is forced to choose between her own safety and anothers, she makes a snap decision to save herself. But things just become more dangerous as she flees. With a mix of supes including witches, shifters and shaman, this is one interesting world! The history of Grimm Hallow is immense and really quite interesting to learn. I'm loving this fairytale world and cannot wait to read about the rest of the girls! LeAnn Mason has put such creativity with original twists to these characters that you can't help but to be taken captive. I absolutely adore anything by this versatile writer! One click this fairytale today, you won't regret it! 😘
