Arcane Casebook #3

The Long Chain

Rate this book
When New York is blanketed in an unnatural fog, Private Detective Alex Lockerby finds himself on the trail of a missing scientist, a stolen military secret, and a merciless killer leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.

In a city the size of New York, things go missing all the time. When a Nobel-Prize winning Chemist vanishes without a trace, his granddaughter taps Alex to find him. Locating people is easy for someone with the best finding rune in the city, but when Alex tracks down the missing man, he has no memory of who he is or what happened to him, and his research is missing.

Convinced that something larger is going on, Alex sets out to uncover the truth. Before he can learn anything concrete, however, the city is shrouded in a dense fog and that brings New York’s resident sorceress, Sorsha Kincaid, to his door. She needs Alex’s finding rune in order to trace the source of the unnatural fog, and she has no patience for his other cases.

Now Alex must keep the volatile and powerful sorceress happy as he tries to unravel a tangled web of science, murder, and missing memories before the clues vanish into the ever-present fog.

might be rather spoiler-y, not sure, but i'll put the warning just in case

It started with a missing chemist, but of course, nothing is ever that simple. Not long afterwards, Runewright P.I Alex Lockerby gets himself tangled with "magical" fog, the Ice Queen sorceress Sorsha Kincaid and her FBI friends, the US Navy, a possible spy, and a very BIG secret kept by Alex's girl, Jessica.

I think the Arcane Casebook series is getting better in each book -- or maybe I have become very familiar with this universe, and develop a bond with Alex Lockerby, and the rest of the characters. I was very intrigued with the case -- even if the explanation about how the alchemy and the magic might lost on my brain *laugh* -- and I was very MUCH surprised with what Jessica kept from Alex all this time.

There's a mysterious character appear in the end . Now I want to quickly jump into book #4 😆

Great magical story

This series is a great tale in magic and urban fantasy. The Runewright magician as noir detective is original and clever and Alex is quite entertaining and heroic. I recommend Dan's books to all fantasy readers

This series is everything I want in a book.

This is the 3rd book in the Arcane Casebook series by Dan Willis.

It is sometimes hard to gel into a review how much you like a series into a small paragraph. I love so much about this series. Alex is probably my favorite character right now. Him and Izzy, wow, just genius. I love all the rune tricks he does and the setting is so believable I feel like I am there with him every day but I am very sorry to hear about character losses in this episode. I hope there is a resurrection rune to bring back that wonderful lady to her guy one day.

I am reading this via my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

This third novel in the Arcane Casebook series is another nice improvement. The first book was good but each additional book has been a notch better to where I'm really starting to enjoy this series and plan to be in it for the long haul. This one includes at least three seperate cases for Alex to work on simultaneously and yet...they may actually tie in to one another. A nicely complex urban fantasy private eye yarn.

Okay, I have to admit I didn't think our hero was gonna get serious about Jessica Rabbit in the last book! My bad. I guess he just struck me as a total manwhore after the first book, but apparently, he's not as bad as all that (despite being surrounded constantly by loads of sexy ladies who he cannot help but ogle nonstop).

I kiiiiiinda saw the ending of this book coming after a while,

The very ending where we meet Moriarty was totally out of left field. I don't even consider it a spoiler for the story because it's got NOTHING to do with the plot of the book, only the overarching plot of the whole series. In this book, I think we're made much more aware that there IS an overarching plot and that it's much more serious than it seems now. Also, it feels like there have been a lot of hints that the time period is slowly approaching the 1940s and WWII, so I expect that eventually, our hero will have to fight Hitler to save the world. Perhaps by punching him in the face.

Most people might find that idea ridiculous in an urban fantasy series like this, but I fought magic cyborg Hitler and his evil minion Nyarlathotep with the Lance of Longinus in Persona 2 (a 20-year-old video game), so this doesn't faze me a bit, lol

This book continued with the problem that developed at the end of book 1. It was beginning to become a bore...but a development may save this series.

Such a fun world to visit!

Dan willis's third book does good job of expanding his crazy world even more. Dan Uses his main character Alex Lockerby to explore this post WW1 world and the amazing magics it holds. While diving deeper into Alex's own power as a rune write, we also see the awesome power of alchemy in this world. After laying the foundations for this world Dan Willis gives them a firm shake by the end of this book.
This book is wonderfully written. The pace stays exciting but still gives the reader grat details and a chance to solve the mysteries as you read. I consider this book a great success in the fun department and would suggest it to any modern fantasy reader. I can't wait to explore this world in the next book.

This book was headed for a solid three until the end when the stakes picked up and a surprise emotional payoff happened.

Like usual poor Alex is working a full caseload of random and minor issues when he gets pulled into something bigger as a favor for a friend. Soon after that the Sorceress Sorsha approaches and demands all his time with help on a different issue. Alex is still dealing with the loss of his life energy from book one and it's getting worse. Fortunately is girlfriend Jessica and her mentor Dr Kellin have an alchemical mixture that keeps him propped up enough to work on his two cases.

Of course, the two cases at first conflict but soon turn out to be connected. That is the part that was getting to me. This was the third time in a row the cases were connected and it felt kind of old from a story structure point of view. However, Willis keeps the story engaging by the wonderful characters. Alex is just a loveable goofball with a heart of gold, Sorsha is mysterious, powerful and beautiful which makes her a compelling figure, at least to me it does. Alex's mentor Iggy and his friend Danny all have enjoyable interactions and scenes to add to the over all mix.

Most of all Alex's feelings for Jessica are finally starting to mature and he's realizing how much he truly cares for her and wants to help her be happy. And better yet those feelings seem to be reciprocated.

The aftermath of the book revealed a larger story that had been mostly hidden previously. There is an astoundingly powerful rune wright out there who is concerned about the gathering darkness in the world as the run up to a second world war. This figure had attempted to use Iggy as a catspaw before to effect change on the world for some hidden reason, but now feels that Iggy is to cautious and not worth working with any more. So he's now turning to impetuous Alex to pick up where Iggy failed and is tired of Alex just messing around and not learning things. I'll not detail any more revelations but I suspect this will help the feeling of stagnation I had during the first part of this book. I look forward to starting book four soon.

Runes, fog, and chemistry

Willis’ Private Eye and Runewright, Alex Lockerby, returns for a third novel involving suspense, magic, and some romance in 1934 New York.

NYC is socked in, day after day, by an unnatural, yet unmagical fog, one dense enough to make the city almost impassable. Alex has been investigating a missing persons case— a colleague of the alchemist who has been providing him with the rejuvenation formula he needs after giving up much of his life force to protect the city in the first Arcane Casebook novel. [The alchemist who hires him is his girlfriend’s mentor, giving even more reasons to help.]

It’s only when Scorcha, the Ice Queen sorcerer (and FBI consultant) pulls him in to seek out the source of the strange fog that Alex realizes just how strange it is. The trail will take him back and forth across Manhattan and even to sea before he’s done, as he chases down the strangest— and youngest— killer of his career.

[A bit more editing might have helped in places. For one example, the USS Chicago could not have sailed from New York for Madrid, Spain. Madrid is over 300 miles inland— the naval base in Spain is at Rota, on the Mediterranean.]

Recommended.

In which Alex learns more about the alchemical elixir keeping him energized and focused.

Life as “The Runewright Detective” makes finding work a little easier, and Alex serves a more varied clientele, now. His largest use is still finding missing persons, and those cases have unusual complications. And, his latest - finding a retired chemist for the man’s granddaughter - seems just a finding tune away.

But, there are anomalies that Alex can’t dismiss, even after finding the Nobel Prize winner, if he could only remember what he noticed. There is also a fog blanketing the city, unnatural and non-dissipating, that is starting to really affect travel around the island.

The lovely Sorcha makes her reappearance, with new agents in tow, as she insists that Alex figure out the nature of the fog, and demands it be his top priority. Uh, yeah. That’s gonna happen 🙄.

But, the really frightening thing is threats to his alchemist, by thugs who break things and shoot people.

“The Long Chain”, third in the 'Arcane Casebook' series, is the best so far.
Alex knows that his days are numbered, even the restorative potion is beginning to fail.
At least he's got Jessica but her schedule is so hectic that they rarely get to spend time together.
A highly regarded Alchemist has gone missing and though Alex finds him in jig time there is a slight problem - he's lost his memory.
Trying to find out why he was assaulted leads Alex to a bizarre conspiracy to steal magical military weaponry.
The Sorceress Sorsha, a dangerous woman he just can't help aggravating, calls on him for help in finding the source of a mysterious fog which has blanketed New York for days.
It takes time and ingenuity (at least he's got plenty of one of them) to resolve both cases.
Which brings the reader to a surprising finale as Alex learns his true mission from a man who knows more than anyone should.
I positively race through it!

This series continues to interest me and frustrate me in near equal measure.

Interest me because there are a lot of elements here that are uncommon in fantasy novels and have the potential to lead to fascinating places. It frustrates me because three books in, and the characters continue to be fairly shallow... in fact, the same can be said for most of the elements of these books. It's like we're skimming along the surface of a much better story, and I'm just waiting for the author to take the plunge and bring his readers along for the ride.

With how this book ended, I am hoping that for the magical side of the story at least, the author might just deliver on something a little deeper in the next book.

This series is getting better with each book!

I really enjoyed the mystery in this one, and having Alex and Sorsha working together was a wonderful extra. I like the dynamic between these two.

Alex is struggling with his loss of life force although it's keeping most of the 'symptoms' at bay thanks to the help of the alchemist Dr Kellin. His relationship with Jessica is still going strong, although wow! there was such a big surprise waiting for us regarding her!

There is also a new, suspicious character showing up at the end of the story and I'm really looking forward to learning who he really is and what he wants from Alex.

A great, engaging story, wonderfully narrated by Alex Knox.

Onto the next book!

A very good yarn!

I won't even try to tell you the story let's just say it's got lots of twists and turns it's well plotted the characters are interesting and you will never be bored. And someone has used a proofreader and a good editor. Always helps, never hurts!
Alex is a good guy but he has a Sword of Dimosthenes hanging above him. His mind is constantly turned on is he tries to put the tiniest clues into an order where he can figure out quickly enough how to stay alive for a minute longer and how to save others at the same time.

This series gets better with each book

Complex plotting and distinctive characters make this an enjoyable read. Set in post depression era New York, Alex works multiple cases, the abduction of an alchemist, the theft of an elderly scientist's home invention and the cause of a mysterious fog that is smothering Manhattan. Meanwhile he hardly ever gets to spend quality time with his girlfriend Jessica. Like good film noir this is a classic.

Alex Lockerby lands in the middle of some small mysteries which add up to a conspiracy that could change the world - again. For someone who was only recently just another penny-ante private eye, Alex Lockerby really does seem to land feet first into some really deep waters (no pun intended). Even as he defuses a treasonous plot at significant personal cost, he is given a vague but ominous commission. What is he going to do? I only know that I want to find out.

A year has passed since the events of book 2 in the series. NYC is covered by peasoup fog which weathermen have no idea why it's there, and it doesn't go away.
A pair of alchemists have disappeared in separate incidents and Lockerby is hired to find them. The Ice Maiden, Sorsha Kincaid comes for his help with the fog.
A seemingly aimless pursuit draws Lockerby deeper into the mystery. An excellent magical mystery tour as his life is drawing closer to the end

Each book is better than the last so far.

It's a good story so far and i found this book to be well written and enjoyable. I still don't like the new voice guy who does the audio, he simple can't do female voices at all and many of the male characters are so close to each other i can't tell who is talking sometimes.

That aside, i will be getting the next book for sure and hopefully the voice guy will learn to do females so you can at least tell they are female.

I May be in love with Alex Lockerby. This PI rune welding 1930’s man is cocky and all heart.
These books get more action packed with each book. I look forward to cracking open the book and reading what my old friends are up to next.
This book had a twist I really didn’t see coming… at least not fully! I couldn’t put it down and poured over the pages.
I’ve bought the rest of the series and need to know what happens next!
One of my favorite series of the year so far!

A strong continuation of the arcane casebook series. Again it takes place about a year after the events of the last book. It was a solid book that had some interesting turn of events. The ending was a cliff hanger that could either be a genius move or the moment the series jumped the shark. I guess only time will tell which one it is.

A solid story, as intriguing as ever

The Arcane Casebook series continues to impress with an exciting tale filled with intriguing twists, this instalment continues to thrill and impress but was not as to my tastes as the previous two. However I'm still ravenous to start the next book.

Just keeps getting better

I highly recommend this series. The characters grab me and make me care. It is arcane magic restricted by economy that forces the main character to use his wits. settings are unusual and feel authentic. Story has twists and turns. Looking forward to reading all the rest.

The Runewright Detective

These books are wonderful. The world and character development is matchless. You might think you have the plot figured but the last 20% of the book will throw so many curves at you that you might wonder how you possibly missed all that while reading. Five stars and keep this series coming!

Book 3 in the Arcane Casebook series, The Long Chain

This is a wicked story. I was flabbergasted by one of the main characters. I could not put this book down. The ending is just as powerful. If you think about the time line you know what is coming and wonder what part Alex is going to have.

I am actually growing into this series and enjoyed this one as it grows the characters and their interplay. Some nice twists albeit with a last chapter that sets up the next few books but felt a little heavy handed. I am intrigued to see where the next book goes and I love the introduction of the different sorcerers as the series goes.

Amazing urban fiction

This 3rd book of the Arcane Casebook series really knocked my socks off! Fast paced, great character development with twists and surprises around every turn of the page. Wonderful story that introduced the new and built on the world of the series in a way that worked brilliantly. So, on to no 4! 😄😄
