George Yule has worked as an English teacher in Britain, Canada, Jamaica, and Saudi Arabia. He has also taught Applied Linguistics in the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawaii, Louisiana State and Minnesota.

شرح منطقی تر:
کتاب بیسیک بسیار خوبیه و سرشاااار از رفرنس دادن های مختلف به کتابهای بیشتر و بیشتر. اما دیگه حالم داره از این کتاب بهم میخوره. دیگه
حساب خوندنش هم از دستم در رفته (گودریدز میگه ۶ بار ولی اون شونصدبار اضافی رو دیگه روم نشد هی بزنم:)) ) حتا مطمئنم خودت هم اونقدری که من خوندم حتا ریوایز نکردی کتابتو جرجی جون :))
کاش بهم میگفتن کل این کتابو خلاصه کن یا کنفرانس بده حتا به پونصد زبان اما امتحان نمیگرفتن. مرگ بر امتحان. مرگ بر تست
اصلا نمیفهمم چرا باید مث طوطی چیزمیز حفظ کرد وقتی مدام میشه به رفرنس ها رجوع کرد و بر اثر تکرار مداوم مطالب پرکاربردتر رو اتوماتیک به خاطر سپرد.
این عمرمون چیه که حالا بیشتر از نصفش هم به حفظ کردن و تست زدن و امتحان دادن داره میگذره؟
پس کی میخوان بفهمن؟

The best introductory book of language. I've studied it in college for the Introduction to linguistics course, and it was really amazing. I liked how the author used an easy language to explain and illustrate, and the examples in the beginning were great. I enjoyed it and I highly recommend it :)

من می‌دونستم زبان‌شناسی دوست دارم! همین طور از دور و نخوانده!
ایشون رو که خوندم فهمیدم حدودا چه جاهایی‌ش رو دوست دارم.
از فصول‌ش، اون جاهایی که راجع به مغز و زبان می‌گفت بهترین بودن. البته خییلی کلّی بودن و دلم میخواد بیشتر بدانم و بخوانم( لذا از همه تون تقاضا دارم اگر در این باره کتابی می‌دونید بهم بگید! سخت هم باشه اوکیه! می‌رم می‌خونم فیزیولوژی‌ش رو:) ) در ادامه‌ی همین، جایی که پروسه‌ی اکوییزیشن ِ زبان اول رو می‌گفت خیلی خوب بود!
جایی که تاریخ انگلیسی رو می‌گفت هم خیلی دوست داشتم که البته قبلا دوست‌داشتنم رو پیدا کرده بودم چون دوستم برام گفته بود همه رو! در این باره هم خوش می‌شم منبع بیشتر دونستن بهم بگید! بخصوص که نمی‌فهمیدم چی می‌شه که جای کلمه‌ها در ساختار جمله عوض می‌شه در طول زمان!

خلاصه که آی ریلی لایکد ایت.

من یه بار امتحان این کتاب رو شدم سه و هفتاد و پنج صدم چون استاد گفته بود فقط از جزوه امتحان میگیره ولی از کل کتاب گرفت و جزوه و کتاب به اندازه‌ی چهار نمره اشتراک داشتن که نمودار بخش‌های جمله بود به اندازه‌ی یک برگه‌ی آ چهار.
ولی الان حاضرم بشینم قصه‌وار بخونمش و از اطلاعاتی که توش بود لذت ببرم و نیم ساعت بعد هم نودونه درصدش رو فراموش کنم.

به واسطه درس و دانشگاه این کتاب رو خوندم و باید بگم که واقعا جالب بود. نویسنده از ابتدا پیدایش زبان، تکامل زبان در انسانها و حیوانات، انواع گروه های زبانی و تمام نکاتی که در مورد زبان و زبانشناسی و آموزش زبان هست رو مورد بررسی و مطالعه قرار میده.

an very inclusive introduction into the fields of linguistics, starts off with origins of language, aspects of language that is, phonetics phonology morphology, syntax and semantics, gives a wonderful basic explanation of the function of each. and then goes on to the wonderful stuff of applied linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, first language acquisition, second language, language change, sign language, sociolinguistics and language and culture. regrettably no chapters on psycho-lunguistics. however over all a wonderful and fun guide on the many facets of linguistics and it's use as a tool to understand humanity.

خدایا کنکور رو نابود کن🚶🏻

ایشون که میبینید کتابی از آقای یول میباشند در باب زبانشناسی. اگر کنجکاوین صرفا که از زبانشناسی بیشتر بدونین و لذت هم ببرین، نمیگم سراغ این کتاب نرین اما اگر رفتین بدونین که حجم عظیمی از اطلاعاتش قراره قیافتون رو ناخشنود کنه چون
یک: به دردتون نمیخوره
دو: خشک تشریف داره
ولی ما بچه های نیکِ آموزش زبان انگلیسی مجبوریم از ایشون (جرج یول) ، فرامکین، هادسون و فالک چیز میز بخونیم تا اونقدر چیز میزمون در باب زبانشناسی_ که یکی از باب های مهم رشتمون هست_ زیاد بشه که بتونیم بر سوال های مزخرف کنکور غالب شیم و بتونیم دانشگاه خوب قبول شیم.
در این میان آه و ناله هامون به آسمون میره مثل خیلی از بچه های کنکور که باید بگم گند بزنن توش که هدفشون از طراحی همچین امتحان گنده ای، نه سنجش سواد بچه ها از خوانده ها و دیده ها و شنیده ها و لمسیجات و ..‌‌. اونها، بلکه پول زیادی که ازش در میارن و به علاوه افسرده کردن دانشجو هاست. کافیه سوال های کنکور رو ببینین تا به سرعت سری به نشانه تایید تکون بدین. چون لزوما نفرات برتر این امتحان عظیم بهترین ها نیستند. کلی چیز میز دیگه هست پشتش که نمیخوام نام ببرم و فکر میکنم آقای یول هم دیگه صداش در میاد که چرا داری اینارو زیر کتاب من میگی و غیره.
خلاصه که زبانشناسی چیز باحالیه. اطلاعات خفنی میده بهتون. یه سری بهش بزنین. چه با فیلم چه کتاب و .‌‌..
اونقدر هم اطلاعات جذاب و مفید هست در این رابطه که دیگه نیازی ندارین چیز میزای نخش و حوصله سر بر و اضافی که اگه آقای یول بهش بر نخوره تو همین کتابم کلیش هست رو بخونین.
البته از حق نگذریم، این کتابم کتاب خوبیه ولی چون ما گاز زدیمش و پاره پوره کردیم و هدفمون نه فهم و درک بلکه چسبوندن صفحاتش به حافظمون بوده، باعث شده همچین حسی دست بده بهمون.
آره خلاصه
زبانشناسی و دریابین
مخصوصا دانش راجع به زبان مادری خودتون
و ببینین زبان چه چیز ها که پشتش نیست. به شدت مبحث گنده ای.

پ.ن این مرور میتونست ساعت ها به طول بیانجامه ولی خب همین کفایت. ادامش و میزارم برای وقتی که واسه دکتری داشتم میخوندم اگر خدا خواست.

IMHO a great introductory book for those who want to know more and get acquainted to linguistics. It doesn't necessarily focus solely on English giving many examples of how things work in other languages, more or less spoken and known. Moreover it gives very good explanations even for beginners and study questions at the end of each chapter encouraging the student/reader to make use of the notions just acquired and deepen their knowledge. It also quotes 'Me talk pretty one day' by David Sedaris at the beginning of one chapter and has some very funny insights!

absolutely FANTASTIC introduction to linguistics, I CANNOT POSSIBLY recommend it higher, it's just fucking amazing. The organization and presentation of information is the clearest I've ever read of anything probably, starting from the absolute basics and culminating in extremely complex and nuanced topics in a really gradual, logical, and thoughtful and just fucking perfectly connected way. my god. honestly my mind was totally blown with each chapter but the next one blew it even harder and right now I'm clutching my head because it's just blown to goddamn smithereens. I'm gonna have to go back and re-rate every book I've ever rated as 5 stars on this site because they can't possibly compare to Yule. I borrowed it from the library but I'm gonna buy myself a version and cover it in gold leaf and anoint it in myrrh, which is the sound I'm currently making because I'm just s h i v e r i n g

از یکی از دوستان توی گودریدز خواستم یه کتاب برای شروع زبان‌شناسی بهم معرفی کنه و این رو بهم معرفی کرد. دومین کتابی‌یه که به زبون انگلیسی خوندم و خوش‌بختانه نثرش برام ساده بود. کتاب به‌طور مختصر درباره‌ی شاخه‌های مختلف زبان‌شناسی حرف می‌زنه(البته مطمئن نیستم از تمام شاخه‌ها حرف زده باشه.). آخر هرفصل هم تمرینات و رفرنس‌های مختلفی از همون فصل می‌آره.
فکر می‌کنم برای شروع و زمینه‌سازی و این‌که بفهمید چه شاخه‌ای چه جذابیت‌هایی براتون داره خیلی مناسب باشه.

An accessible introduction to most of the basic areas of linguistics, from phonetics to syntax to language development and sociolinguistics. Not practical for in-depth study of any particular field, but excellent as an overview. I highly recommend it to the beginner students of general linguistics since it is beneficial and the language is not beyond their level.

The most remarkable thing about this book is the Quotation at the beginning of every chapter; it sums up the whole content in a very neat narrative way. Of course, thanks to collage 4th year semester 2, we study it. So let me hope for a simple easy exam as the book ^.^

این کتاب رو پسندیدم، هرچند که به دلایلی خیلی طول کشید تا تمومش کنم. یادمه دوستام که اینو به‌عنوان کتاب درسی خوندن ازش نفرت داشتن اما من چون تفننی خوندم دوستش داشتم. مطالبش خیلی آسان و قابل فهم بود و اطلاعات ساده و ابتدایی اما مهم برای آشنایی با زبان‌شناسی رو ارائه می‌داد. در کل دوستش داشتم.
