But her husband is straight out of her nightmares.

Pia Thomason is torn between two Dark Ones and feeling like a fool, considering she doesn’t know where either of them are. Alec was no doubt broken-hearted over finding out that Pia was mated to his best friend, Kristoff. And hubby Kristoff believes she has ties to the group trying to destroy his people.

So Pia goes back to her humdrum Seattle life determined to forget about Kristoff—but fate has other plans. With Alec missing, something truly evil threatening her ghostly charges, and the vampire community hunting both Kristoff and her for crimes they didn’t commit, Pia realizes that if they’re going to be shackled together for better or worse, she may as well start to enjoy it…

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

I just couldn't wait to see what happened to Pia, her Dark One Kristoff, his DO pal Alec, the Council of Vampires, The Brotherhood of the Light, the Icelandic ghost Ulfur (and his ghostly horse Ragnar), not to mention Pia's friend Magda and her beau Ray. I was lucky to be able to access the e-book through my library (and no one had beaten me to it).

The slapstick continues, as Pia tries to make everyone play nice. Since she is both a Zorya of the Brotherhood and a Beloved of the Dark Ones, she can see both sides and will smite the recalcitrant. There are several plots running concurrently, making things murky, but as Kristoff tells Pia, she will work through the details one step at a time. In the meanwhile, she has fun with their telepathy by tormenting him with erotic fantasies.

One of the best parts of the book (in my opinion anyway) is when Pia is brought before the Vampire Council at the beginning of the novel. It becomes very clear that she has chosen to come of her own accord and that she will take no shit from any of them. I believe that this is a parody of authors like Christine Feehan, whose vampires (oh, excuse me, Carpathians) drag their women around by the wrist, talk down to them, and tell them what to think and feel. Feehan’s heroines think they are smart, but act really dumb and put up with abuse. Pia may appear ditzy, but she's a helluva lot smarter than she lets on and she moves the investigation along. MacAlister's Beloveds definitely rule the roost and spend time deflating large egos, calling a spade a spade, and generally cutting the arrogance down to size!

Not to everyone's taste, but is anything ever? The combination of slapstick and feminism makes this series great fun.

I've really not enjoyed the last few Dark Ones novels, especially the ones with this main character. The first ones in the series are first and foremost romance novels. They have vampire characters in them (I have to point out that this breed of "dark ones" are borrowed from Christine Feehan's series which has problems all its own), but the story is not overtaken by the supernatural concepts and is just good old story telling. These last two novels feature a main character who is forever whining about her plus sizeness and how horrible she looks and how drop dead gorgeous her vampire love is. If this character can't fathom how he can desire her, neither can the audience. Also, the complete insecure mess that she is about herself is at odds with her kickassness that she trys to portray the rest of the time. Does this make the character complex? I say no-it only makes her a mess and not an interesting one. Macalister's snarky humour is usually a hit, but in these novels it just comes across as contrived and desperate.

These are the first of her novels that have felt completely forced.I could almost feel the underlying sentiment of "must write at least 5 pages today to meet deadline." I don't mean to be all harsh, because I normally love Katie Macalister's writing, but I think that is why I have been so disappointed in these books. I know she can do much better and has. Perhaps she needs to focus more on quality than quantity for a while (she is writing YA novels, the Dark Ones series, Aisling Gray novels, as well as the Silver Dragons.)

This is the conclusion to Pia and Kristoff's story which started in Zen and the Art of Vampires. This keeps the same lighthearted and humorous feel as the first book. I loved the banter between Pia and Kristoff. The secondary characters also added a lot of humor. Mattias was the main source of comic relief in this book.

I happy with how things developed between Pia and Kristoff as a couple. They are both likable characters and it was easy to want their relationship to succeed. The plot was a bit convoluted and ridiculous at times, but still fun and nothing to be taken too seriously. There was a fairly big plot inconsistency at the start, but it can be forgiven since it was rectified at the end and never really hindered my enjoyment of the story.

I'm not sure I was happy with Alec's role in this story, but hopefully he will have more of a chance to redeem himself in his own book Much Ado About Vampires. There was also a few other minor subplots that I wish were wrapped up. Like the identity of the Ilargi and the saving of the final ghost!.

That aside this was a fun read.

Rating:3.5 stars.

This was really boring. I mean, really boring. I thought it might be that I'm reading this series all at once, but I don't think that's it. I think the series is just getting worse. The repetition is a little more annoying now and the humor is less humorous. I just think there should be an instance where Pia looks at Kristoff and sex isn't mentioned or had.

This is basically the second (!&*$&^#&) half of one big story, starting with Zen and the Art of Vampires. I was really really irritated with that book because the previous 5 books in the series were pretty much stand-alone stories told in the same world (same vamp mythology, etc). Seems like her publishers decided to try to squeeze some extra $$ out of her fans by breaking up the last book into two books - so totally unnecessary. I digress.

This was a fine ending to the story that began in Zen, but overall the whole story arc was just ok. Kind of convoluted. I laughed out loud a few times, but I also found the main character to be kind of annoying. MacAlister's female leads are always more on the svelte side, but why do they all have to have body image issues?! Can't one like the way she looks? Gah, whatever. If you're looking for a light beach read with some humorous romance and vampires, pick up BOTH of the books.

plots. too many plots & subplots & subplots for the subplots.....
Pia is accused by the Dark Ones of killing Annika but she knows that Denise killed Annika & she says nothing? Brotherhood of the light; Moravian Councill Ilagi; Necromancers?
Glad it got sorted in the end but it took a long & winding road to get there....

Did enjoy Christian, Allegra & their son Josef.

Once again, we find ourselves with Pia Thompson, Alec, and Kristoff. Picking up where Pia's story left off, Pia is caught between the two vampires and feels like an idiot because she doesn't know where either of them is. Meanwhile, Alec is heartbroken because Pia is married to his best friend, Kristoff, and Kristoff suspects she’s involved with his enemies. Determined to forget Kristoff, Pia returns to her normal life in Seattle, but fate has other plans. When Alec goes missing and Pia ends up with dark forces after her, Pia realizes she needs to embrace her connection with Kristoff if they are to survive together.

Rating: 4/5

I gave this latest installment in the Dark Ones series a four out of five. So far this is one of my favorite stories. I love that we get to find out what happens with Pia, Alec, and Kristoff. Katie MacAlister continues to prove herself one of my favorite authors to listen to. The story is funny, steamy, and serious at times, and overall just a great time. Of course for me, as with many of Katie MacAlister‘s books, it’s the side characters that really won my heart and had me giggling. I’ve continued to listen to these books through audible and Nicole Poole has done another excellent job of narrating. If you’re listening to or reading the Dark Ones series, you absolutely have to continue through to crouching vampire hidden fang, you won’t regret it.

This was cute. Light like the last in the series when we first meet Pia. It ended in a very anticlimactic way but pleasantly and lightly enough that it wasn't outside of the established style of the previous novel.

I know that I've kinda jumped into the middle of this series and I'm jumping back out again as well. It is cute and light and not really what I feel like reading right now. Entertaining and enjoyable if that's what you're up for though.

As good as I expected. I thought that this story would just be a straight forward romance because the first book, Zen and the Art of Vampires, involved mostly mystery. However, this book revealed a lot about Kristoff's and Alec's past, the history of the Brotherhood of the Light, and also showed how Kristoff's and Pia's relationship was cemented.

In the last book, Pia turned out to be Kristoff's Beloved and not Alec's as everyone expected. However, Crouching Vampire, Hidden Fang explained that Kristoff left at the end of first book because he felt that Pia preferred Alec to him. So he magnanimously decided that he would give her the chance at a relationship with Alec eventhough it would kill him to not be with her. Technically, a Vampire who has found his/her Beloved cannot live without her and can only feed off of him or her. At the beginning of the story, Kristoff had practically wasted away to nothing and was dying without Pia.(This concept that a man cannot survive without a woman, is a very appealing ideology!!!) After this misunderstanding is cleared up, Pia and Kristoff set off to find Alec (who has been missing since leaving Iceland in the first book) and "exacrete" (the author's word choice, not mine) from her position as the Zorya. In this quest, they unearth many secrets and unsolved mysteries, such as who killed the Zorya Anniki in Pia's bathroom, when and why did the Brotherhood start chasing Vampires, who is the Ilargi and finally whether or not Kristoff loved Pia. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next installment in the series.

This book is to be read after the Zen and the Art of Vampires. The book picks up two months later after Pia was in Iceland. Pia has become married not only to one but two men. Her legal husband who she thinks the marriage is illegal because she was forced into the marriage is to Kristoff. Kristoff is a Dark One who she becomes his beloved. The second marriage is to the Sacristan Mattias, who Pia just gets irritated with and believes it's just a marriage in ceromony only. You see Pia manages to become Zorya to the Brotherhood of The Light. This crazy group thinks its there responsibility to rid the world of evil. In order for Pia to have her full power of the moon she has to marry the Sacristan. He's kind of like a Priest. Pia's power consist of the Moon. She draws light from the moon and can use it to destroy things by it. A Zorya is suppose to help ghost or Spirits find there way to Ostri (Heaven) but the Brotherhood has been using them to destroy the Dark Ones.
After knowing the Dark Ones Pia realizes that they are not monsters the way the Brotherhood makes them out to be. In fact she has come to realize the Brotherhood are the ones who are dangerous. Pia wants no part of Zoryaing and leaves them behind and is so happy there is not a chapter of the Brotherhood around where she lives. This is such a fun book to read, because Pia, Kristoff, Mattias, Magda, & Raymond Magda's boyfriend are in for the ride of there life. Pia is summoned to the Moravian Counsel and winds up going back to Europe. To find out about this adventure, READ THE BOOK! You will find yourself busting out loud laughing in the darndest places.

Zen & the Art of Vampires ended leaving itself open for this book to follow and wrap things up. The only problem with that is that this one also seemed to end with an opening for a book to follow. Is there a Pia/Kristoff mini-trilogy planned?

I have to say from the first installment they are one of my favorite Dark One/Beloved couples, and I was kept guessing about what was going on to the very end just like in the first book. Mostly with books in this series, I kinda have a pretty good idea of where things are going, how they are going to be resolved, and who the 'bad guy' is if there is one. Both books with this couple have bucked that trend.

Basically even more of the hot/funny/sweet that I expect when I pick up a Katie MacAlister novel.

She has yet to disappoint me.

Which reminds me...I need to try out some of her historical/modern romances that aren't Dragons/Dark Ones.

Sadly, I did not like this book as much as the previous one even though it involved the same set of characters. The same characters, who were enjoyable before, had become abrasive and difficult to tolerate. I did like the storyline and intent but it was a little rushed. The rushed feeling may have contributed to the characters' personality losses

I only have one complaint - not enough sex scenes between Pia and Kristoff. *LOL* Loved the fact Katie brought back a few old character favorites from previous Dark Ones books. Allie and Christian, Sebastian, and Esme the ghost. Just wish they had a little more page time.

I think this book has a decent story but honestly, it bored me. I think what it came down to is that I just wasn't curious about the characters. I wasn't particularly interested in what happened to them or what they are doing for that matter. I also got annoyed when Pia's insecurity went on for too long. It sounded like she was fishing for compliments. He already made it clear that he was interested but she kept going on about how she thinks he is still pining for his dead wife. I thought they straightened this out when they reunited. I also didn't like Allie's cameo. It reminded me too much of Joy and Roxy commenting on the sidelines. If I just imagined it in my head, the image is just too unrealistic without the comic payoff. The particular scene I was talking about was when Pia and Kristoff were reunited and they were communicating through their minds, while kissing. Allie provided a commentary throughout and it was just awkward to imagine. It just went on too long.

Perhaps the only scene that gave me hope that this would be a funny book is the scene between one of the cult member and Pia. She was supposed to guide the Zorya and Pia started spouting blasphemous statements.

The story revolves around Pia and Kristoff. They parted ways in the previous book and reunited in this book. Pia is being called to fulfill her Zorya duties and she wants to get rid of the title. She reunites with Kristoff. A search for the mole happens. Alec is revealed to be the mole and he had been planning to hurt Kristoff. Kristoff's wife killed his beloved and Alec got close to him to enact his revenge. He didn't go through with it in the end and it was discovered that the beloved was killed in an accident and not intentionally.

The book ended with Pia becoming a Zenith and brokering tentative peace between the reapers and the vampires.

I loved Pia and Kristoff and watching their relationship develop. I have to admit though, that this isn't my favorite book of the series. MacAlister herself admits that her plots often get a bit convoluted and complicated, and I think that this one might have gotten away from her. This is actually the continuation of the story arc begun in the previous book, Zen and the Art of Vampires, but I felt there were some continuity issues between the two that weren't really explained as well as I would have liked. Also, there were still loose threads at the end of this book that I'd like to see resolved but I'm not sure we will see all of them since some are so tied up with Pia and her story is done now that she has an HEA. Guess I'll have to keep reading the series to see if MacAlister proves me wrong!

Only reason I read this is because Zen and the Art of Vampires was my #Z for Litsy A to Z Challenge. I didn't realize it wasn't Stand Alone and ended with cliffhanger. Also it was a bitterly cold day and I was happy to hang out by the fire. I read first third of book where cliffhanger was resolved, skimmed middle (just couldn't get into it) and read last third for ending. A vampire child who is obsessed with Buffy and Van Helsing was hilarious. Otherwise it's a Romance novel with a lot of complicated Vampire Lore. If that's for you, enjoy. It's not for me. I won't be reading anymore of the series.

While I really enjoyed the chemistry and love between Pia and Kristoff, as well as their adventures together, I was a little disappointed in the storyline. Some of it simply didn't make a great deal of sense considering the way the previous book concluded. It was almost as if the author forgot what they wrote - and it was a rather important plot point - or just chose to ignore it for expedience. I still enjoyed the book and would recommend the series. It's been a great deal of fun and I am excited to read the next one.

I loathed this book. I hated everything about it. The characters, the romance , the storyline itself. It was all awful. I honestly haven't liked many from this series. I may be done with it completely. The heroines are all idiots. I understand that it's suppose to come off as humorous but to me they just come off as stupid. The men really aren't any better.

I struggled with the first book....and this one was even harder to get into. While Pia romance was interesting in the first book, this lacked the fire. Also I can say again Katie MacAlister just has SO SO SO much going on in her books I feel like it’s hard to keep up.

Overall: same deal as before, this series gave me a headache. It’s a pass up.
