About Sweet Cherry Easy Classics: From Shakespeare to Austen, Sweet Cherry Easy Classics adapts classic literature into stories for children, introducing these timeless tales to a new generation. All titles in the series are leveled for classroom use, including GRLs. The books target early readers ages 6-8, including early school-age children looking for exciting stories, as well as reluctant readers. Popular books in the series include Pride and Prejudice, A Christmas Carol and Othello. At quarter to eight o'clock tonight a gentleman will call. He would like to ask you about a very important matter. Do not think it odd if your visitor wears a mask. When Sherlock Holmes is asked for help by a powerful yet dim king, it seems that he cannot refuse. But the detective has no idea that this case will bring him up against a woman just as clever, cunning and quick as he is. Has Holmes finally met his match?
I'm the author of over 50 books for children plus an historical novella for adults.
I have been published by such companies as Puffin, Andre Deutsch, Hamish Hamilton, Cambridge University Press, Anglia Young Books and Poolbeg Press, and I'm currently working on my third series for Sweet Cherry Publishing.
I have been teaching creative writing, as well as copy-editing and proof-reading, for over 15 years, and also do manuscript appraisals at very competitive rates.
When the royal family of Bohemia needs help, Holmes is on the case tracking down a photograph being used for blackmail. The blackmailer is the beautiful Irene Adler, and she might be the only person to ever fool Holmes and beat him at his own game.
This Sherlock Holmes mystery is retold and simplified for children ages 7-13. The story follows exactly the same story line as the original book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with much of the same dialogue and narration. Holmes and Watson are the same beloved characters that we know, and the mystery is just as suspenseful and thrilling as the original.
I loved how the writing style is simple, but is still vivid and energetic! The text is large, and there are a few definition boxes that explain terms or historical items that may be unfamiliar.
I loved the black and white illustrations that pop up every few pages. The cartoony style of the drawings is just right for this type of children's retelling, and gives an added flair to the story. The artwork is sometimes humorous and fun, making the story a little more lighthearted for young people.
I can't wait to revisit more Holmes stories in this children's series! This is an excellent way to introduce classics to elementary and middle grade readers!
This was a very readable version of the original story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It has been simplified for a younger age group but the dialogue between Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson still retains its original energy. The story engaged me more as I progressed through the book.
Occasionally, an explanation box describes some unfamiliar item or idea, which is a very good ploy. The cartoon style drawings are great, succeeding in lightening the tone of the story. It is a fairly short read and I would recommend it to any fans of Sherlock Holmes who enjoyed the original stories.
Thanks to Netgalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for providing me with an advance copy. It will be available on 14th May 2020.
Bardzo fajne, jest to wersja dla dzieci, ale ja jakoś nie mogłam się wciągnąć w tą oryginalną, więc przeczytałam tą. Podobało mi się, ponieważ lubię książki detektywistyczne.
This iteration of the classic Sherlock Holmes story was very readable, straightforward, easy for kids to understand and read yet still engaging, mysterious and surprising. I enjoyed the ways that the characters were described and suspense that the reader was left in as the mystery unfolded. Overall I thought this book was a great first introduction for young readers to the stories of Sherlock Holmes and I am interested in seeing the rest of the books that are written in this series. Thank you to the publisher, Sweet Cherry Publishing, for providing me with the advanced copy of this book!
Dr. Watson serves as the narrator in this middle grade adaptation of the classic short story. Sherlock Holmes is enlisted by the King of Bohemia to recover photographic evidence of a former relationship with an opera singer that has the potential to jeopardize his impending marriage. This version has illustrations throughout to engage younger readers. Also included are separate boxes with definitions of terms that would be unfamiliar to the target audience. The adaptation aspect of this story was fantastically done, but the story itself is not one of the most intriguing from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
I received an ebook of this title from the publisher via Netgalley; all opinions are my own.
Binged this in 1 sitting in less than 50 minutes and it was somewhat interesting. It kept me on the edge of my seat(even though I read this leaning on my bed).
A Scandal in Bohemia is a mystery where our favourite fictional detective may have met his match. This is the second book I have read and reviewed in this collection. I found this installment had less of the pictures and historical definitions geared toward the target audience than the first book did. However I did feel that the premise of a Scandal in Bohemia was more simple than that of a Study in Scarlet. Still I feel that the reveal was quite clever. I recommend the Sherlock Holmes Children’s Collection to younger readers who are interested in a lighter introduction to classic literature. I look forward to going back to the previous 10 books in the series that I have yet to read.
4,5 Kolejna książka z serii o przygodach Sherlocka i Watson. Jedna z najprzyjemniejszych i ciekawych i jednoczeście lekkich powieści. Kobieta która jest taka sama jak Holmes była świetna. Bardzo wam polecam, jedna z moich ulubionych części.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (original author) and Stephanie Baudet (adapted by). I've voluntarily read and reviewed this copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Scandal in Bohemia is a short, fun and quick read. In A Scandal in Bohemia, Sherlock is asked to help a King who is scared of being exposed. While it seems like an easy case, Sherlock soon discovers that he is up against a woman who seems just as smart and cunning as he is.
This was very enjoyable. Especially since it showcases the first meeting between Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler. And it's nice to see Sherlock up against someone who isn't as easy to beat. The narration by Doctor Watson is also fun because he tells the story with so much wonder.
A great read as one expects from a tale about Sherlock Holmes.
Another read aloud done! I love the time we spend reading a story together. This one came courtesy of my friend, Rachel. She gifted us the entire series of The Sherlock Holmes Children's Collection: Mystery, Mischief, and Mayhem.
The four kids enjoyed this book and I found ways for them to be involved in the mystery 🤣 The one downside we found is that this is not a chapter book. So I just read until it felt like a chapter, and then we saved the next "chapter-ish" section for the next night. This is an easy read, with large font, illustrations, and less than 120 pages. Great series for your budding reader and/or little detective.
