Gerald "Gerry" Malcolm Durrell was born in India in 1925. His elder siblings are Lawrence Durrell, Leslie Durrell, and Margaret Durrell. His family settled on Corfu when Gerald was a boy and he spent his time studying its wildlife. He relates these experiences in the trilogy beginning with My Family And Other Animals, and continuing with Birds, Beasts, And Relatives and The Garden Of The Gods. In his books he writes with wry humour and great perception about both the humans and the animals he meets.

On leaving Corfu he returned to England to work on the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student keeper. His adventures there are told with characteristic energy in Beasts In My Belfry. A few years later, Gerald began organising his own animal-collecting expeditions. The first, to the Cameroons, was followed by expeditions to Paraguay, Argentina and Sierra Leone. He recounts these experiences in a number of books, including The Drunken Forest. Gerald also visited many countries while shooting various television series, including An Amateur Naturalist. In 1958 Gerald Durrell realised a lifelong dream when he set up the Jersey Zoological Park, followed a few years later by the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust.

Gerald was married twice; Jacquie Durrell (1951-1979), Lee Durrell (1979-1995).

Gerald Durrell's style is exuberant, passionate and acutely observed. He died in 1995.

Gyengék a karakterek. Erőltetettek a párbeszédek. Gyatra a fordítás.

"The setting is an island in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece. Here the Finchberry-Whites, with their children, Amanda and David, came each year from England to spend the summer.

"But this summer Amanda and David found their friend Yani in trouble. The Mayor, who held the mortgage on the land Yani had inherited, was about to foreclose. Something had to be done.

"And so one morning the villagers found themselves donkeyless -- all twenty donkeys and the Mayor's horse had mysteriously vanished, and the only clue was a sign which read 'Donkeys of the world unite.'

"'Witchcrtaft! Witchcraft!' yelled a villager.

"'Don't be foolish,' said the Mayor. 'It's obviously Communists. Who else would ask donkeys to unite?'

"How everything is finally put to rights in a most unconventional example of island justice brings delight to villagers, children, and reader.

"Gerald Durrell's gift for portraying human and animal foibles, at the same time droll and sympathetic, gives his books a special gay wit and easy-going charm."

I hadn't realized this was children's or young adult book, and it's short (158 pages) so I read it all in one sitting. A charming little book, and I couldn't help thinking that Amanda was based on the author's sister Margo, and that David was an amalgam of his brothers Larry and Leslie. Enjoyable, but not one of the author's best efforts (I still think Menagerie Manor is one of his best efforts.

This is a children's book written by Gerald Durrell, one of my favorite writers. It is about 2 English children who are visiting a Greek island and their attempt to help their Greek friend who has inherited property as well as a large debt on the death of his father. The Greek villagers are all rich characters and there is lots of humor. It is a little dated, but still wonderful. My particular copy is made even better by amazing illustrations by Robin Jacques (I think).

I do enjoy any kind of commentary on Brits abroad, particularly in the 1930s. There’s a certain warmth and comfort in the awkward peculiarity the English possess. Being terribly stuck in our old ways, despite being in an environment where it could be deemed impractical to maintain our stuffy quirks and traditions. The “Brits Abroad” stereotype will never not be funny. This notion is also present in Durrell’s Corfu trilogy, which this book would be a good introduction to. Being a fan of Durrell since I was a child, I decided to give this a read. I like how he didn’t fail to include challenging vocabulary and themes for older children. He was a teacher by nature. This is sometimes hard to come by in modern children’s literature. Good bedtime story material, and enjoyable humour for a parent, especially the running Communist jokes!

The Donkey Rustlers is Gerald Durrell's fiction for young readers. It's a story of a group of kids who, in order to help their friend, kidnap all the donkeys that are there on their island. It's a decent read. But I have always enjoyed his nonfiction more than his fiction. They are more adventurous, more entertaining, more fun to read. Nevertheless, this book will be special for me as I own its first edition.

If a child around ten years old gets hold of this book, it will last with them for a lifetime, and they will be certain to go to Greece at some point. I reread this yet again because I found an old American edition, minus the dust jacket, with the Robin Jacques illustration. I had the British with the Anne Mieike von Ogtrop images, which are indelibly imprinted on me. I haven't been able to look at the UK edition with the Ronald Searle ones, that will be a chance for another read!

Interesting story. Two English children, Amanda and David, discover that their neighbor, Yani, will lose his home because he cannot pay off his father's debt. So the children come up with a plan to hide the villagers' donkeys and ask for a ransom. As always, the reader feels like they are in the Greek village, as Durrell describes life there so well.
