This book was imterest8ng and I learnt quite a lot about the human body and what I liked was at the end there were lots of puzzles and riddles which were fun to crack!
This book is incredibly fun, even for adults. I like to just sit and open it random and read about something interesting. It covers all kinds of aspects of the world with amazing graphics and art to show you details and the insides of things.
The sections include space, earth, nature, the human body, science, and history. Details of what is included include things like starburst, the water cycle and glaciers, survival secrets of animals in nature, magnetism, the ancient world, the human body and brain power, and how chemicals work inside the human body. And that’s just an incredibly brief overview. There is also a nice little reference section in the back that has maps, lists, and things of that sort.
You aren’t going to go in depth into anything of course, but it definitely gives you a quick overview and is interesting enough that you’ll be doing follow ups of your own. I would like to have seen a nice bibliography, but that may be too much to ask.
Enriching, thoughtful and informative experience. I translated two parts of the encyclopedia and revised all of it. Hopefully, my and my colleagues efforts will be fruitful and i wish we - as Arabs- have similar encyclopedias by arabian authors in the near future.

Professional Review: Ranucci, B. (2013). Smithsonian knowledge encyclopedia: The world as you've never seen it before. Booklist, 110(4), 35.
I've read the Knowledge Encyclopedia cover to cover and enjoyed it immensely. It's easy to read, informative, and the illustrations are absolutely amazing. Some might argue that the explanations don't go very deep, but that is to be expected from a general knowledge encyclopedia that covers a truly wide range of topics.
brilliant book. I have read this book cover to cover several tines over (in no specific order). Good for kids from any age. My eldest has loved it since he was four and still loves it two years later. Detailed facts on a wide number of subjects without being too heavy.
Book Review: A Feminist Perspective on Knowledge Encyclopedia: The World as You’ve Never Seen It Before Knowledge Encyclopedia: The World as You’ve Never Seen It Before, published by D.K. Publishing, is a visually stunning compendium of facts, diagrams, and illustrations designed to engage young readers and curious minds. While the book excels in its presentation of scientific, historical, and cultural knowledge, a feminist critique reveals both its strengths in accessibility and its shortcomings in gender representation and inclusive knowledge production.
Visual Brilliance and Educational Appeal The book’s most striking feature is its use of high-definition graphics, 3D renderings, and infographics to break down complex subjects—from human anatomy to space exploration—into digestible, captivating visuals. This approach makes learning dynamic and inclusive for different types of learners, particularly those who thrive on visual stimuli. The encyclopedia’s broad scope ensures that it appeals to a wide audience, fostering curiosity across disciplines.
The Gender Gap in Representation Despite its comprehensive coverage, Knowledge Encyclopedia often defaults to a male-centric lens in its depictions of historical figures, scientists, and even fictional characters. Women’s contributions in STEM, politics, and the arts are frequently sidelined or mentioned only in passing, reinforcing the erasure of female pioneers. For example, while male inventors and explorers are highlighted with full-page features, women like Rosalind Franklin (whose work was crucial to understanding DNA) or Katherine Johnson (the NASA mathematician) receive minimal attention. This imbalance subtly perpetuates the myth that knowledge production has been—and continues to be—a male-dominated endeavor.
Stereotypical Framing in Social and Cultural Sections The sections on human society and culture occasionally lapse into outdated gender norms. Descriptions of ancient civilizations or modern social structures sometimes present rigid divisions between male and female roles without critical interrogation. A more progressive approach could have included discussions on gender diversity across cultures, the history of feminist movements, or the contributions of non-binary and transgender individuals in science and history. The absence of these perspectives limits the book’s potential as a truly inclusive educational resource.
Missed Opportunities in Language and Imagery Even in its visual storytelling, the book often reinforces traditional gender binaries. Illustrations of professions (e.g., doctors, engineers, soldiers) skew male, while caregiving or domestic roles are more likely to feature women. This subconscious bias, though unintentional, shapes young readers’ perceptions of who “belongs” in certain fields. Additionally, discussions on human biology could have been more inclusive by acknowledging intersex variations or the social construction of gender, rather than presenting sex and gender as strictly binary.
Conclusion: A Feast for the Eyes, but Not Yet for Equality Knowledge Encyclopedia is an impressive achievement in visual education, offering an engaging way to explore the world’s wonders. However, its lack of deliberate gender inclusivity and its reliance on traditional narratives prevent it from being a truly progressive resource. For parents and educators using this book, supplementing it with feminist and diverse perspectives will be essential to balance its gaps.
Rating: 4/5 (A masterclass in visual learning that could benefit from a more equitable representation of knowledge.)
This was an incredible brush up on all the basic things learned in younger grades!
This reference book does not nearly go into great depth with each subject, but it definitely gives the brief, basic face facts of everything it talks about. Just a few subjects it discusses:
All human body systems Ancient Egypt The Crusades The Slave Trade World Wars DNA Periodic Table How a fetus grows Animal life Vikings Laws of motion layers of the sun Energy Gravity Fossils Industrial Revolution Constellations climate/life in the different habitats Stone Age Space Age
There is so much more but wow what a fun trip.
If you read it front to back, it does a great job flowing from one subject to the next.
This book is also organized well, has measurement charts in the back, and a very clear index.

Haha I've read this book a lot, and it's super cool! Very fascinating information about space, earth, nature, the human body, science and history. The amazing illustrations complement the easy-to-understand facts. Definitely recommend!

Professional Review: From Booklist Packed with information in six sections (“Space,” “Earth,” “Nature,” “Human Body,” “Science” and “History”), this lavishly illustrated volume provides accessible and engaging information for middle-grade learners and up.
