“I’m Worth,” I reply.
“Berserker Queen,” Bern adds. “The Champion of the Wastes,” Henry inserts.
“Soulmate!” Dray interjects with a smirk, and I roll my eyes.
“Or just Worth, ignore them.” “More like pain in the ass,” Evan mumbles.”
This female protagonist has many names for a reason. She is such a badass. She has been since the beginning of this series but The Cities truly showcases her skills. As a leader now she has officially shed her “slave” skin that’s left her proving a point and she’s moved into the territory of owning her shit and protecting her men.
The Cities picks up with Taz killing 4 Berserkers who refuse to allow her to be their Queen. She has Ivar’s dead body still next to her and she rules their land. Opening this book up with violence on violence made me wary maybe that’s where the fighting would stay, and it would lead to the issue I had with The Summit where it was too much romance and not enough storyline or action, but this book did not fail. After handling things in the Berserker clan she hits the road with Dray and her loyal people of Berserkers and Seekers. Btw DRAY DRAY DRAY!!!! I was so excited that the majority of this book was just him with her. Don’t get me wrong, I love her harem of men but Dray has my heart. When he’s not there I feel incomplete. So I was totally fine with getting to see him in action more. Anyway, back to where I was.
They hit the road and are met with ambushes, cannibals, and explosions galore. The fight scenes are stellar. They are described so perfectly you can almost hear a knife sliding out of a sheath in your ears. Smell blood in the air. Feel the adrenaline pumping through your body at every quick turn and sprint from a blade coming at you. It’s glorious! While all this is taking place we get to know more about the assassin Archel, the doctor Evan, and 4 new characters introduced in this book. Sounds like a lot but I promise you can’t help but love them.
Archel is hilarious. I love his witty comebacks and stealthy shadow moves. Evan grew on me quick. He has a little mouth on him and can be such an adorable brat. The new character introduced halfway through the book is another badass female that I was cheering for the moment I met her. She rambles, she’s cheery and she doesn’t let her trauma hold her back.
The actual Cities are not entered until about 75% of the book, but it’s perfectly okay. It allows for some catch up with her men and then the book ends on a cliffhanger. I’m excited to read the fourth book. I know it will open with more violence and bloodlust; hopefully no deaths I can’t bear.
