Komi’s friendship quest just hit its first major obstacle—the green-eyed monster! Tadano and a girl named Onemine have been hanging out a lot lately, and Komi doesn’t know how to deal with her sudden flood of jealousy. She can’t explain what’s wrong, so she ends up spying on them from the shadows. Will her creepy peeping lose her a chance at a new friend and push Tadano away?
ODA Tomohito Name (in native language):小田智仁 Associated Names:オダトモヒト
Tomohito Oda won the grand prize for World Worst One in the 70th Shogakukan New Comic Artist Awards in 2012. Oda’s series Digicon, about a tough high school girl who finds herself in control of an alien with plans for world domination, ran from 2014 to 2015.
Volume five about Komi, who has a communication disorder, and her quest to make 100 friends as she is nearly mute. About her friendship with Tadano, her chief advocate who defends her against the charge of being aloof. She’s neurodiverse, and we get some insights throughout about how it is she might be suffering from social anxiety.
We take a close look at that anxiety in action at the shoujo-mandatory culture festival, where Komi’s class gets to perform a (French) “maid cafe” (which is also a common culture-festival choice). Trans character Najime asks the question of the hour with a wink to readers: “Don't you want to see Komi dressed up as a maid?!” So we’re implicated in this performance as voyeurs! And then, a girl becomes obsessed about wanting to see Komi’s underpants. Nadano dresses as a maid, too, so there are cross-dressing hijinks involving checking out Tadano’s constructed “breasts.” His classmates think that Tadano makes the cutest maid, and a new girl seems to want to befriend him, creating a little jealousy from Komi. So, there’s discomfort for Komi, and maybe another kind of discomfort for readers? Or not, I see, as dozens of readers love this volume and see it as just light-hearted fun. And much of it is!
Not much advancement on the friends goal, and we’d like to see more of Tadano and Komi alone (as they get outed by someone for being an “item,” to their embarrassment), but there's a lot to like here in Komi and Tadano and the focus on neurodiversity.
A borderline 2-star outing carried by the characters. The cute, near mute Komi is precious as she becomes jealous of a classmate getting close to her crush.
Unfortunately, most of the book is given over to the cultural festival trope (we just had sports festival last volume!) with a cliched maid cafe for the class entry. Cross-dressing must ensue. Oh, and we have a whole chapter devoted to a classmate trying to peek at Komi's underwear. So, y'know, ick.
Once again, this is super adorable and I couldn’t help but love Komi all over again. Now I’ll admit I’m getting a little Komi’d out, but that’s probably because I binged four in one day. Aside from that, I really enjoyed this. It was funny and Komi ends up wearing several fun outfits. Her class does a festival and she ends up in a maid outfit that is just the cutest thing!!! Well Tadano ends up in one too, but that’s a whole other thing. Which was also quite funny!! She doesn’t make too many friends this time, but she does a lot of cute and awkward things. Usually, these are pretty clean, but there are some dirty references in this one. Oh well, it was still lovable!!
I recommend this series to those who like funny stories, particularly about adorable awkward girls. The awkwardness is totally relatable at times! Lol
Komi is super popular despite her aloof reputation. Only timid Tadano seems to notice that she doesn't talk... ever! When she reaches out to him on the first day of class he quickly realizes it's awkwardness holding her back. Now he'll become her first friend in her quest to make 100 friends.
I really love Komi and Tadano together. Every scene with the two of them works well for me and make me melt. I loved when he called knowing she’d be nervous about the weather. A new girl is introduced who sees what’s going on with Komi and Tadano. I thought that was super adorable.
Unfortunately there were a couple of the chapters I just didn’t think were funny like I think they were meant to be. I really hated the food critic chapter. I just thought it was stupid. And I get sick of Najime at times. Yes, a trans character so normalized is neat but they’re also a little much at times.
Overall I love Komi Can’t Communicate and will keep reading to see this girl make more friends... and most especially get closer to Tadano.
Let us start with a quote from the extremely sociable, gender fluid, everyone's friend, Osana Najimi:
Wouldn't you like to see Komi in a maid outfit?
Thus god ( the author) has seen it fit to bless us a cover of Komi in said outfit for this collection.
This is volume contains my favorite arc of the series, the cultural festival. It all fit conveniently in this volume; from the pre-planning, the event itself, and the after-party. It has a lot of visually detailed and it was entertaining to see Komi enjoy her first festival to the fullest. Plus, you get to see a glimpse of jealous Komi, who is still helplessly adorable.
I guess this is peak Komi for me. I'm not sure if the next volumes will appeal to me as much as this one did.
Komi has issues balancing it's actual cute stuff and stuff that just lands flat.
The school/maid stuff wasn't that funny and went on for way too long. With the exception of the main guy dressed as a maid, that was pretty funny. The best chapters is Komi having her issues talking, and also one with a storm where she's stuck in the house all day talking to her crush on the phone. That chapter hit good.
Never bad but not as great as it could be, Komi remains solid.
I continue to enjoy each volume of this series, but I do wish that Todano and Komi were getting some more time alone. I want to see that friendship blossom into more, as I expect it to do later in the series.
For the school cultural festival, Komi and her classmates decide to do a Maid Cafe, somewhat so they can see Komi in a maid outfit, and somewhat because that’s what Komi chooses and everyone band wagons her. Somehow, Tadano is convinced to also dress in a maid costume, and he doesn’t look half bad. Najimi uses several illicit money making schemes, most involving Komi, so her class wins the best of show but has to forfeit all their profits.
There are a lot of boob jokes, including a bonus story discussing Tadano’s fake ones. Certain characters are still obsessed with Komi and seeing her underwear. While I appreciate the series for focusing on communication disorders, I can’t help but wonder what it would be like if the main character weren’t beautiful. Why do all her classmates adore her and put her on a pedestal, especially since she doesn't talk to any of them? It’s because she’s pretty. This series is just as much about looks as it is about sympathizing with people who have communication disorders. The majority of the art is again in the four-panels-per-page layout. While some students will probably still enjoy this series by volume five, I will be devoting my time to other worthy endeavors.
This was an incredibly disappointing installment for me & I'm not sure I'll continue on with the series after this - which sucks because I genuinely really liked the original premise and I feel like this just completely strayed from it?
I think I might just watch the anime and see if that gets better because honestly all the sexualization of minors (specifically Komi) was a lot and I'm just so incredibly uncomfortable. Like I vaguely remember a few "huh? wut?" moments in the last volume but this was just so in your face.
Like maybe this is more of a 3 star but honestly im just so dissapointed I struggle to justify even that so 2 stars it is and I hate it here. They say go to hell but you just rated a volume in a manga series you genuinely loved and felt represented by 2 stars so I'm already there.....
This one just wasn't as good. Found myself skimming just to get to the next volume. I'm not a huge fan of how Yamai is being portrayed as basically a predator because she is in love with Komi. A whole chapter on her trying to see Komi's underwear? Really? Nah. And another festival right after having the sports festival last volume? And how cliche can we get with yet another maid cafe and (tee-hee!) forcing a cishet dude into a maid costume.🙄 Over done, over played, and it never gets better.
I LOVED this one! It's cute as Hell, but they do some really fun gender-bending in this one, that's in such positive spirits, it absolutely warms my heart. I love all these little people and the maid cafe was charming as fuck. The humor is on point too, I laughed out loud more than once. Long live Komi-san.
While Najimi gets better with every volume, I like Yamai less and less. The author would have plenty of material if Yamai just had a hopeless crush on Komi, but instead the author just makes her creepy. The predatory lesbian jokes were never funny, and they really soured the rest of this volume.
I am so excited to be getting back to Komi! I love this manga series so much. Volume seven is about to come out (it in fact just came out this past Tuesday and I am waiting for my copy to arrive) and I wanted to try and catch up so when my copy comes I could jump in!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Komi is still on her journey to make 100 friends and in this volume, Komi and her classmates will be participating in a school festival. Each class will be making their own booth and Komi's class decides to make a booth centered around a cafe. Komi also has some potential new friendships in this volume and encounters jealousy for perhaps the first time.
Since this is volume five I did not want to go too in-depth with the plot summary. I really love this manga and I always look forward to reading the next one. I love the characters and I enjoy meeting each one of Komi's new friends (or potential friends). This volume was kind of unique in that we saw Komi experience jealous for the first time but also kind of be called out (for crushing on a guy), I really want to see if where this plotline might go in the future! I can not wait to see what new friends Komi makes in volume six.
We see our Komi at home on a rainy day, getting confused for a restaurant critic and being targeted by an obsessive fan who wants a sneaky peek at her. The school’s cultural festival has arrived and she and her class set up a maid cafe and Tadano helps in a surprising way while Najimi almost jeopardizes it. A (100%/Outstanding)
3.5, because it is cute and enjoyable still, but this volume didn't really add much to the main story or have a lot of particularly cute moments (sometimes, that's the only thing you can expect with this series).
Plus, the whole Maid Café thing, sure is very Japanese and all, but also such a misogynist thing in a way, it felt a bit cringe...
Chapter 60 was very "what the hell, Japan". As well as the bonus chapters at the back..... But most of the romance and slice of life vibes were still very cute.
Komi Can’t Communicate Vol. 5 was another great addition to the series following the characters as they prepare for the school's Culture Festival.
With the school culture festival coming up, Komi's class is stuck trying to decide the theme for their project. After Najimi suggests a maid café, the vote is unanimous with everyone wanting to see Komi in a maid outfit. But when Tadano begins hanging out with a new friend, Komi experiences jealousy for the first time.
The Komi Can’t Communicate series has quickly become one of my favorite manga series and it's everything I want from a slice of life manga. The premise of a beautiful girl who can't communicate wanting to make 100 friends is a lot of fun and I'm enjoying watching her friend count increase with each volume. At the start of this volume, Komi's friend count is at eleven and during this volume she makes two new friends bringing her total to thirteen.
Komi actually makes some progress with her communication disorder in this book and manages to speak a couple of times. Granted what she says isn't actually what she meant to say but hey it's talking! It was fun seeing Komi get jealous when Tadano became friendly with Onemine, another girl in their class. I liked how Onemine handled it though and that she had Komi's back once she realized what was going on. The cultural festival with the maid café was a great storyline and I often found myself laughing aloud at Najimi's antics.
Overall Komi Can’t Communicate Vol. 5 was an excellent read and I'm looking forward to picking up the next volume soon.
I think this volume was a little better than the previous two. This is because Komi actually makes a friend that doesn't also become Tadano's friend. It felt a little more unique that way.
