Having not read any of the previous Kindred series, Lachlan and Synne’s story was my first introduction into the medieval-type world of magic and witches. I enjoyed the concept, loved the magic battles, and found all the characters brief backstories really interesting.
Grant is great at giving pockets of information from previous books, and I believe this can easily be read as a stand alone.
I received an advance reader copy from author. This is my honest review.
He’d never seen a woman like her before. Lachlan wasn’t sure what to think. She touched the trees as she passed them, and the action confused him. But it wasn’t until she embraced the oak that he saw her lips move, almost as if she were talking to it.
His grandmother had once mentioned those who had a deep connection to nature, but he had believed it was the ramblings of her confused mind. Now, he wondered if she had been telling him the truth.
Lachlan had spotted the woman riding toward the woods. It was obvious that she was hesitant to enter the forest, but she hadn’t let that stop her. At first, he’d thought it was because she might have suspected that he was within. While her cloak hid her face, her narrow shoulders and slight frame instantly marked her as female. He’d been so intent on watching her that he hadn’t immediately noticed the bow she carried until she dismounted, but his attention had quickly shifted to the weapon.
And now, it was focused on the way she stared at him. There was no fear in her amber eyes. Instead, he gazed into the face of one who had faced death. Someone who had delivered death. He was intrigued by this woman. She was unlike any he’d seen before, and while a part of him rebelled against it, another part was unable to look away. It was that interest that urged him to go to her, to discover her name and learn who she was.
Lachlan had wielded a sword before he could even lift it properly. His father and two uncles had trained him to fight for the clan, and he did it not just because it was expected, but because he knew it was what he was meant to do.
Because of his training, he recognized the difference between someone who carried a weapon for show, and those who knew how to use them. This woman was the latter. His sister had begged him to show her how to use a bow, but his father had refused. Lachlan didn’t dare go against his sire. Yet someone in this female’s life had taken the time to train her.
Lachlan tightened his fingers on the reins of his mount. He gave a slight tap with his heel, and the gelding moved forward. Lachlan didn’t take his eyes from the woman, nor she from him. She didn’t move, but he had the sense that she was prepared for an attack from any angle.
Damn intriguing.
The closer he got to her, the more he was able to take her in. At first, he’d believed her blond hair was cut short, but he now saw that it was held back from her face by several rows of braids hidden by the hood of her cloak. He wondered how long it was and had the desire to push the hood back to get a better look at it.
Amber eyes observed him carefully, warily. While her gaze was that of a warrior, her face resembled an angel’s. Beauty, unlike any he’d ever gazed upon before, stood before him now. Her skin was flawless, her cheekbones high, and her lips delightfully full. If her face was this beautiful, he could well imagine what her body looked like. It was too bad the cloak hid it from view.
He stopped his horse a few yards away and managed to find his voice. “Are you lost?”
A blond brow quirked at his question. “Do I look lost?”
“You are no’ from our clan, nor do you have the look of any neighboring clans.” He shrugged. “So, aye, you appear lost.”
“I’m not.”
She said nothing more, but her accent gave her away. He didn’t know what an English woman was doing in Scotland, but it couldn’t be good. Despite his earlier assumption that she knew how to use the bow, he couldn’t help but be concerned for her.
“You can be on your way,” she told him.
Lachlan bit back a grin. Damn if she hadn’t just issued him an order. “I’m no’ going anywhere, lass.”
She sighed and lifted her chin. “I am not some wilting female in need of a male.”
“I didna say that you were. And I’m no’ offering aid.”
Several moments passed where she simply stared at him. Finally, she looked away, issuing another sigh, this one louder. “You aren’t going to leave, are you?”
He shook his head.
She whirled around, the cloak billowing out around her as she did. That’s when he saw that she wore breeches. He only got a glimpse of her legs before the cloak once more settled to hide her from view. But that brief second was enough to get his blood racing.
With interest and desire.
Lachlan wanted to see her legs again. And now, more than ever, he wished to see the rest of her. Was she really dressed like a man? If that weren’t odd enough, no woman he knew would talk to him as this one did.
“You’re staring,” the female said.
Her back was to him now as she fiddled with her horse. He wasn’t sure how she knew where his gaze was centered. It was most likely a lucky guess.
“So?” he replied.
Her head turned so she looked at him over her shoulder. “I’ll leave the forest. I just want a few minutes.”
“The fact that you say that tells me you have no idea where you are.”
“Scotland,” she retorted.
He rolled his eyes. “Aye, that you are. But you’re also on MacCullum land.”
“I’ve ridden over a lot of territory, and I’ll continue riding onto others,” she said and turned her attention back to the horse.
“Lass,” he said with a sigh. “There is a war brewing between my clan and a neighboring one.”
“There’s always war of some kind.”
“You’re missing the point. You traveling alone as you are could make others believe you to be a spy. Or worse, someone to be kidnapped.”
Her hands stilled. Then she turned and faced him with her arms by her sides. “I’m not a spy. And if anyone dares to try and force me to do anything, they’ll regret it.”
“MacCullum land is vast. If you want to get through the forest without anyone else bothering you, let me escort you.”
“How do I know you’re a MacCullum? For all I know, everything you’ve told me is a lie.”
If those words had come from a man, Lachlan would’ve struck him down. Instead, he swung his leg over the gelding’s head and slid to the ground. As soon as his feet hit the earth, he strode to the woman and unsheathed his sword.
She took a step back and had an arrow nocked in her bow in the time it took him to blink. He was impressed, but his anger didn’t allow him to express it. Instead, he held his sword out so she could see the hilt.
“Look,” he demanded.
Her amber eyes flicked from his face to the weapon. “MacCullum,” she said and lowered her bow. “You could have stolen that. But given the way you carry it and the fury in your gaze, I believe it’s yours.”
He returned the blade to its scabbard. “I fight for my laird. This was his gift to me for defeating our enemy.”
The woman briefly closed her eyes before she put the arrow back into the quiver strapped to the horse. “I really am fine on my own.”
“You might know English ways, but you know nothing of ours, lass,” he told her and gave a short whistle to the gelding, which walked to him. He gathered the reins in his hands. “I patrol this forest to keep others out.”
“Wouldn’t it be better to have an army?”
“They make too much noise. I’m quieter on my own.”
She gave a nod and once more looked at the tree she’d embraced earlier. “I’ve always worked on my own.”
“You might be able to take some enemies, but on your own, you’d be overrun soon enough.”
“Not by men,” he thought he heard her say.
Lachlan frowned. “What?”
“Nothing,” she hastily replied and swung her gaze back to him. “I need to get through the forest quickly.”
“I can do that.”
She pressed her lips together, considering him. He saw she didn’t want to accept his offer. In her shoes, he probably wouldn’t either. But he knew for a fact that there were small bands of enemies wandering the forest, looking for anyone they believed they could take or kill to hurt the clan.
“If you refuse, I’ll only follow you.”
She snorted. “I doubt it. I’m good at covering my tracks.”
“You are no’ good enough to make me lose you.”
That made her hesitate. “If I agree, how soon can I be through the woods?”
“Two days. I know the shortest routes. If you go on your own, you could be here for days more.”
“I doubt that,” she stated. “But I am in a hurry.”
He wanted to ask where she was headed, but she probably wouldn’t tell him, so he didn’t bother. Instead, he mounted the gelding. “We better get moving if you’re in a hurry.”
“Aye,” she said and looked at the oak once more.
Then she walked to the tree and placed her hand on it. She leaned closer, and he could’ve sworn she spoke to it. When she straightened, she kept her gaze lowered while making her way to the mare before climbing onto the animal.
She gave him a nod, and he set off. She didn’t stay even with him, instead preferring to remain a little behind. They rode in silence for several minutes while he thought about what he had witnessed her doing with the tree. She had wanted to remain with it a little longer despite being in a rush. What was so important about the tree? It was probably an answer he’d never get.
“I’m Lachlan,” he said.
There was a brief pause before she replied, “I’m Synne.”
Synne is a Hunter, a person trained to hunt the members of the Coven. She has always had a strong infinity with trees. Synne travels to Scotland in search of the elusive Varroki. Instead, she encounters Lachland MacCullum. The rugged Highlander helps Synne navigate Scotland’s snowy climes. What secrets lie in Synne’s lineage? Will she find the Varroki before Sybbyl locates another bone fragment? Lachland MacCullum is next in line to be laird of his clan. He happens upon a strange warrior-woman in his forest. Synne opens Lachland’s eyes to magic and an evil encroaching on the world. He decides to leave his clan behind to aid Synne in her fight against the Coven. Danger stalks them as they search for the Varroki. What family secrets will Lachland unearth? What role does he play in the upcoming war? It took me a while to warm up to Synne. I admire Synne’s refusal to lead evil to innocent bystanders. She does not want to endanger others in her thirst for vengeance. I like how Synne grudgingly listens to Lachland’s advice. Instinctively, she knows it is not empty platitude but the Scotsman’s past experiences speaking. What I love most about Synne is how she acknowledges Lachland’s strengths reinforcing her weaknesses. She does not let pride stand in the way. Lachland instantly won my heart. He is alpha enough without being overbearing or arrogant. I like how Lachland tries to be the voice of reason for Synne. Even though the two just met, he wants to spare her from repeating the same mistakes he once made. I adore how Lachland gives Synne the necessary space and privacy to commune with her element. He actually encouraged her to embrace her ability and to see it as the gift it was. What I love the most about Lachland is his acceptance of who and what Synne is. He openly admired her warrior abilities. Also, Lachland has no desire in changing her. EVERNIGHT is book four in Donna Grant’s paranormal-historical romance series, THE KINDRED. Sadly, I have not read the prior three books. That did not hinder my ability to understand the book’s overall plot. The author recaps the important parts about this interesting world enough for a new reader to follow. To me, this series has the same feel and vibe as her DARK SWORD series. EVERNIGHT is an engaging tale of fate bringing two people together during a bleak time. The author does a wondrous job of melding Norse and Celtic spirituality into a harmonious union. I am eager to see what happens next.
This one was slow at first for me, then picked up and really caught my attention. It was full of witches, warlocks and a handsome highlander, which always makes me sigh. Synne, a Hunter of the Coven witches, meets Lachlan, the handsome highlander, on her journey. He takes an interest in her and decides to travel with her to help protect her. They must travel a great distance and face obstacles to reach the end of this journey. On the way along with obstacles, Synne finds out more about her family than she ever would have thought possible. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Kindred Series to see how things play out.
I received this book as an ARC, but have not read the previous books, in the series. Donna Grant, is one of my favorite Authors and once again, she did not disappoint. DG has a way of bringing you into her stories and bringing her characters to life. The way the book is written, you will be able to keep up with the story line, but I suggest to start from book #1. This is definitely, a must buy.
This series started a few years back, and if you read it, you will see how much Donna Grant has grown as an author. You can read this book without having read the first 3 books, as Donna gives a little of the history of the Hunters, the First Witch, the Coven, plus a few other magicals. Synne is a Hunter, trying to make her way across unknown Scotland in search of the Varroki. The Varroki are battling the Coven, along with the Hunters. Lots of details are given the reader so that the story is entertaining and satisfying. Synne’s story is resolved in this book, but the overall arc that started in Book 1 continues. If you’ve not read any of Donna Grant’s books, this one will give you a taste of her writing. She has an extensive catalog, and I’ve enjoyed reading all the varied books. This one in no exception. Looking forward to the next book. I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest opinion.
Thanks to author Donna Grant for my ARC which I received in exchange for an honest review. Evernight is book 4 in The Kindred series. While I have read every book in Grant's Dark Kings series, Evernight was my first foray into the world of The Kindred. I must admit that I was a bit nervous to jump in at book 4 in a series but I needn't have been concerned.
The author has a unique talent for providing just the right amount of information and backstory in a novel to allow new readers to delve into the world without alienating longtime readers with a boring retelling of previous books. The Kindred Series combines romance and medieval fantasy. Witches, warlocks, hunters and wood nymphs seamlessly interact with Scottish highlanders. What's not to love?
Evernight is the story of courageous Hunter Synne and Lachlan MacCullum, a Scottish warrior. When Lachlan comes upon the talented Hunter on MacCullum lands he finds himself immediately drawn to her. Although the story is set in Medieval era Scotland, Grant astutely decides to imbue her hero with a modern day view of women. While Lachlan is certainly a fierce fighter and an alpha male for sure he is not chauvinistic in the least. I appreciated the way that Lachlan gained an almost immediate respect for Synne's incredible battle skills and intellect. This made the developing romance between the characters seem much more like a partnership than is typical of novels set in this time period.
Synne and Lachlan embark on a quest to find the legendary Varroki so that they can join forces with the group to defeat Sybbll and the Coven. This book has some epic battle scenes to go along with the sexy interaction of the two leads. Despite not having read the previous books, I found myself to be surprisingly invested in the outcome. While Synne and Lachlan do find true love, Evernight ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. This is to be expected as this is apparently the penultimate book in the series. Rather than detract from my enjoyment of the book, this made me want to rush out and read the first 3 titles in the series so that I am ready for what is sure to be an epic conclusion!
If you are looking for a bit of an escape during these trying times, delve into medieval Scotland with Evernight. You will be glad you decided to take the journey!
Dynamo Donna does it again! I have been waiting to get my hands on the next Kindred book, and the wait was definitely worth it!
Evernight is the fourth in The Kindred series by Donna Grant and can be read as a standalone in the series, however to get the full goodness of the series I do recommend you read in order, it's just that good!
Synne is on a mission. A mission to avenge the only family she has ever had. Trained as a Hunter, to kill witches, Synne is on a journey to end the Coven. A group of witches, lead by a powerful witch hellbent on making the world hers, Synne must first find the bone. Through a tragic past, a bitter family she can barley remember and a future she is unsure of, Synne has one thing on her mind, find the bone, stop the witch, avenge her family. What she was unprepared for was Lachlan.
Lachlan MacCullum is the son of the Laird of his clan, next in line to take over for his family. A normal day out on patrol of his clans lands, leads him to Synne, the Hunter, a woman he has never seen, but now knows he can't turn away from. When he hears her story, he can't help but want to aid her in her quest. When his family ties come to light the pair soon learn fate is not just something from the story books. Their connection is strong and passionate, their chemistry sparks the pages to life and brings the book to life. When the past is revealed and secrets uncovered, Synne is given a glimpse into her past that changes her world for the better. With a powerful witch on their heels can the couple finish their journey? Will they find what they are looking for?
I can't tell you the joy I received from reading this book! I love all of Donna's work, but this series is near and dear to my heart. The characters are so much fun to get to know and the story line flows, plot twists and both old and new characters are developed even more. Each new book is like meeting with friends you haven't seen in a long time. 5 out of 5 star review and a definite recommended read from this fan!
Evernight is the kind of story that will leave readers wondering until the very last second. The twists and turns that Synne and Lachlan faced as they battled their way to the Varroki were many and terrifying at times. They never knew from one moment to the next who was an enemy and who a friend. Synne utilized all her training as well as her intuition and that little bit of something extra she’d always hidden in order to battle her way through. Lachlan’s sword skills and strategic mind held him in good standing as he battled his newly discovered enemies in the witches in the world. Together they were a force to be reckoned with, but sometimes a person can trust the wrong ally and they can turn on us at the most unexpected of times. The passion between Lachlan and Synne ran at a slow simmer through most of the story, with a few flares as they embraced their new relationship, but the love that developed was deeper and more devoted that some couples that have been together for decades. I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes in the future and seeing how their enemies evolve and the involvement of Lachlan and Synne in the future of the Hunters. This series is one that is so unique and intriguing because it is a look at history and myth that has not been done and that no one else could come up with making this truly a Donna Grant masterpiece. Bring me more, Donna!
*Received an ARC for an honest review* I've been eagerly awaiting Synne's story since the end of the last Kindred book, and this did not disappoint. I absolutely love this series. I love how both Norse and Celtic legend and mythology is intertwined with the hunters, as well as the history of the witches. It lends so much depth to this epic story that Donna Grant is weaving. I think Synne has to be so far my favorite heroine in this series. We meet her as she comes from this horrible tragedy and as she develops through the book, we see such vulnerability and strength but also flaws and she struggles with that as she searches for who she is and where she belongs. And Lachlan, is opposite of her, seems self assured and settled in his roll, but believes in her and her path which makes them well matched and suited for each other. Their fate is intertwined, and as the war with the witches hurtles ever closer and the odds seems to keep stacking against them, The Hunters and the Varoki continue to persevere. I can't wait to see where this story will go after the end of this book.
Evernight, the 4th book in the Kindred saga continues the fantasy tale of good versus evil in a world of humans, witches, nymphs and warlocks. As the Coven grows in both ambition and numbers, Sybbyl sets her sites on another bone of the First Witch and then, the Varroki. As the lone survivor of the massacre at the abbey, the Hunter Synne, is determined to avenge her clan. She seeks out the Varroki to join forces. Along the way, she discovers family, love and another piece of the First Witch. Synne and Lachland smolder on the pages. Malene’s feelings for Armir are discovered and a great betrayal occurs. This is an exciting addition to the world of the Kindred.
This book was really good. I think the fact that I read book #3 in the Kindred series not that long ago really helped me to enjoy this one since it takes place a few weeks to a month or so from the end that one. Synne was such a great character. She was fighting the grief in the loss of the only family she had ever known and trying to fight a war that she knew was coming. I found the meeting with Lachlan interesting and how he just accepted what she was saying and even went with her even though his clan needed him. It made for a great storyline and the twists and turns that it took definitely kept me wanting to read more, no matter how tired I was. You don't want to miss out on this story. *I received an ARC for an honest review*
This book was my introduction to the world of the Kindred and I was able to follow the story fairly well. This is the fourth book in this series but can be read as a stand-alone. I found the characters fascinating and the storyline engaging. The backstory is briefly explained in snippets throughout the book allowing readers to understand the history of the series. Donna Grant has created another fantastic world that begs to be explored. Well written.
Sybbyl is awesome. A total bad ass. Lachlan and Sybbyl meet by chance in the woods and it doesn't take long for them to form a bond and work together to end an evil.
In Donna Grant fashion, this story is built with an intriguing world. The characters are strong and bigger than life. I enjoyed Synne and Lachlan’s story. Synne is a strong heroine with a vulnerable heart that made her feel genuine. Lachlan was a true warrior and a Scotsman that we all love. It was a page turner from the very beginning. If you enjoy reading a world full of witches and magic... you’ll want to dive into this series. **I wouldn’t recommend reading this book without reading the previous books in the series.**
*Warning* If you haven't read previous book in this series, this review will contain spoilers from previous books. While it can be read stand alone, I recommend reading the series in order to fully enjoy this book.
Listened to audio narrated well by Louisa Jane Underwood. I enjoyed her narration and thought she did a great job bringing these characters to life.
Synne is reeling from the loss of so many friends after the fight with Sybbyl. She's a Hunter with no magic but she's determined to reach the Varroki before Sybbl finds them. She has a connection with her beloved trees but with the attack of the Gira on the only family she's ever known she is also afraid of the forest.
Lachlan MacCullum is a Laird's son. His clan is on the brink of war with another and he has no patience for strangers on his land. He's been training to fight since he could hold a sword. When he finds a strange woman on his land he's determined to escort her off of it.
After hearing Synne's story he realizes to protect his clan he must join Synne's fight against the Coven witches. As they travel they fall in love and find out there is more to their past and who they are than they realized. They learn to hunt and fight together and make better choices as they are being hunted, forming strong bonds. I loved how Lachlan quickly had to change his world view of women after he met Synne. He didn't try to change her but did advise her how not to repeat mistakes of the past and relied on her to do what he knew she did best.
This is another book in the series that will expand your knowledge of the Kindred world and keep you on your toes, while wanting to kill Sybbyl and the other Coven witches yourself. More Varroki and cameos of previous and future couples.
Like the previous book, this book leaves a cliff hanger in the fight against the Coven, but the next book, 'Everspell,' is the last book in this series. It has recently been released so there's no waiting to find out how it all ends.
NIggles: How can you learn to wield a sword before you can lift it properly?
Synne is a mystery. She was adopted by Hunters who taught her to fight with her strengths. She doesn't remember her life before she was adopted, and this story is, at the heart, her coming of age story. Very early we get to see her ability which my favorite of the entire series. And later in the series, we see how it ties into her past. Donna's ability to wrap my heart around Synne from the very first page is a talent she exhibits through every series she creates.
Enter Lachlan. Not only is he immediately drawn to Synne, he's not afraid to believe in her. This is very attractive to me as a reader. Often times the H and H have internal conflict between them that drives the plot until they get out of each other's way and fall in love. Not here. Synne and Lachlan recognize their worth to each other very quickly, and it never waivers. He doesn't lose faith in her even in a major crisis of the story. Lachlan is no slouch of a hero either. He's strong, fierce and determined to be more than just a warrior. He's determined to be her Man, and oh! he sure is!! Donna also didn't leave Lachlan's family in the gray area of ambiguity that would be easy to do in a story based mostly on Synne and the Hunters. I was so wanting to meet his sister and the rest of the clan!
Donna ends Evernight on a true cliffhanger that sets up her 5th and (she says) final book of the series. My heart was pounding and I was scrambling to reread for clues I may have missed as I sped through the story the first time. You don't have to read the first three books of the series to read this, Donna does a good job of giving you enough information that you don't get lost. Realistically though, you will enjoy the rich backstory far more if you read the first three books before this one.
Characters I never expected to feel empathy for have me wrapped around their... fingers.. and I cannot wait for the next book, even if it's the final one. Even though I received Evernight as an ARC, I am so glad to have purchased it too! Highly Recommended!!
EVERNIGHT is the fourth full-length instalment in Donna Grant's adult THE KINDRED paranormal, fantasy series set in the mythological world of magic, witches and warlocks, hunters and the Gira. This is Synne, and Lachlan MacCullums story line. EVERNIGHT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from several third person perspectives including Synne and Lachlan, EVERNIGHT follows Synne, a young woman who believes she is without magic but a woman with the ability to talk to the trees. On a personal journey to avenge the deaths of the couple who raised her like their own, Synne , trained as a Hunter to hunt and kill the members of the Coven and their powerful leader Sybbyl, will come face to face with Lachlan MacCullum, the man with whom Synne will fall in love. In an effort to cross the MacCullum clan lands, Lachlan and Synne will journey together while discovering a few truths alone the way. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Synne and Lachlan, as Synne will cross paths with her past revealing the secret of her own magical powers.
EVERNIGHT ( and the Kindred Series) is an infinitely detailed story line. Donna Grant weaves an intricate world of magic, vengeance, power and control with enchanted creatures including the nymph like tree creatures known as the Gira, and the Varroki, a group of witches and warlocks who have battled the Coven since the First Witch died. Anyone possessing the bones of the First Witch will be granted immense power, and with that information Sybbyl goes in search, destroying anyone who tries to deter her mission.
Donna Grant pulls the reader into a fascinating and captivating tale of one woman’s journey of revenge and retribution against the Coven and anyone who is willing to stand in her way. The premise is engaging and intriguing; the romance is passionate; the characters are numerous, energetic and magical.
This is the 4th book in the Kindred series and while it can absolutely be read as a stand alone, I recommend reading the previous books first because there is a bigger story ARC that is a common thread throughout the series. That being said, in this one we get Synne and Lachlan's story in this one. Synne is a hunter who has been trained to hunt and kill members of the Coven. On her search for the Varokki she meets Lachlan, who is stunned by a woman hunter. He has his eyes opened to the other things that exist in the world, and joins her on her quest. Neither is aware of what this journey will bring them or how it will change their lives.
Ok so let me start by saying that while I like this series, it isn't my favorite of this authors book by any means. This is more of a medieval fantasy romance series than a typical paranormal romance, so bear that in mind while reading this. But with that being said, they are still great reads! Synne is this kick butt woman who isn't afraid to do the hard things that are necessary in order to defeat her enemies and bring justice to others. Lachlan has been brought up knowing that he is the heir to his lands, but he also has a strong sense of right and wrong. And he definitely isn't afraid to step and do what needs to be done either! I really enjoyed this one and I was slightly iffy on whether I would like Synne or not. I am glad that I was proven wrong on that score! You definitely get the good vs evil and action that you would want in this type of book, along with some moves ahead in the battle. I really can't wait to see where all this series takes us!
So I took my time reading this book as it is the first of the series that I have read and I wanted to make sure I was getting all the names and what they are correctly.
Once again Donna took me to another world. The world of witches, Hunters, Gira, and the Varroki. They all intrigued me and I most definitely want to know more about them.
Our main couple this go around is Synne, a Hunter, and Lachlan, a Highlander. Synne is on a quest to make it to the Varroki stronghold as the abbey where she lived and trained was destroyed by a witch looking to claim all the bones of the First Witch to give herself the ultimate power. (There's one in every Coven).
They meet when she crossed his clan's lands. He sees her in the forest and wonders what she is up to with the trees. Turns out she can hear the trees talking to her. Or more like they let her feel when something is wrong, there is danger or it's peaceful and safe.
He learns of her story and believes her seeing that his grandmother was a witch but no one spoke of that. IN their time witches were killed immediately. He finds her fascinating and beautiful so of course he must join her on her quest. If she fails and Sybbyl achieves more power that would put everyone in danger so he must go to protect his clan.
We have some twists and turns but they aren't there just to take up space....they add to the story and keep you interested.
Now I'm not sure about the ending seeing that it's a cliffhanger of sorts. I guess I could always go back and catch up on what I missed so by the time the next one comes out I'm all caught up and ready to kick some witch butt!
Series: The Kindred #4 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
Synne is determined to ride the world of the Coven, especially since they took away everything she holds dear. While making her way to the Varroki she crosses paths with a sexy Scotsman who decides to help in the fight against the Coven. He also helps her work through her grief.
This book had another good couple, another First Witch bone, and another battle against Coven witches. This was another instalove relationship but I still enjoyed it. Lachlan was a great hero who was protective of Synne and his clan. I really enjoyed how Synne changed his view on what women can and can’t do. I love when a hero realizes that some views against women are wrong and wants to change them. Lachlan was just a great hero who you knew would risk everything for love.
Synne is struggling to deal with the grief from the death of her adopted family. She has turned it into anger and is set on revenge. Lachlan helps her realize that won’t bring them back and helps her work through some of her grief. While Synne is a hunter, she hasn’t had as much experience as the previous heroines. She has stayed closer to the abby and used her ability to communicate with the trees to protect it. She was a more insecure heroine as well. For the first part of this book she doubts herself, and her abilities, a lot. This got a little old after a while but is understandable since her whole world changed quickly, I just wish it hadn’t felt so repetitive.
Overall, another great addition to the series. I can’t wait to see what will happen next now that four of the First Witches bones have been found.
Evernight ARC Review: Every time I start reading one of Donna Grants books I can not put them down! Donna Grant’s amazingly wonderful imagination takes us on adventure with a beautiful Hunter Synne on a quest to find Varroki a legendary group to help defeat the evil Coven.
In Synne’s quest she comes upon Lachlan MacCullum a handsome Scottish warrior who is instantly drawn to her and wants to aide her in this quest.

This was a great addition to the Kindred series! It is the fourth book of the series but it can be read as a stand alone. But why would you want to do that, when the previous books are amazing as well? I've been fascinated with Synne ever since she came into the series. I always knew she was going to have a great storyline and I was right. She's a kick-ass heroine, who doesn't need a man to rescue her, which are my favorite kind. Lachlan was a surprise to me. At first, I thought that he was going to be one of those men who need to be proven wrong by a woman, and I was so excited to see that he not only approved of Synne's abilities but let her take charge some of the time. The plot was intriguing, and left me speechless for about 30 seconds, and then I was bombarded with endless questions. Sybbyl is still her usual evil self, and who else absolutely loves the First Witch in this book? I loved that she can make Sybbyl feel real fear sometimes. And of course we got to see the Varroki, which is one of the books I cannot wait for in this series! We had the addition of a few new characters and, again, I cannot wait to see what Donna Grant has planned for them. As I learned in her previous books, all is not what it seems with certain characters so do NOT judge right off the bat. Definitely a book to add to our ever-growing lists of books to read (and buy)!
I've received this book as an ARC Angel for an honest review.
Favorite Quote: “Survive this night, lass. You hold my heart in your hands, and we have many years ahead of us.”
Evernight was everything I've come to expect from this author and I was transported for a few hours into a world of hunters, witches, warlocks, covens, and magical tree beings. I love these stories because they're a nice break from reality and they're short enough to be enjoyed in a single day. The overarching series plot continues in this latest Kindred installment, with the heroine of this story-Synne-setting out on a path towards vengeance. Along the way she meets up with a Scottish laird that steals her heart while aiding her. Lachlan is supportive of Synne, but hopes to sway her from her path because he knows it will not bring her happiness. As the two journey together, they cross paths with Coven witches and other beings. More pieces of the puzzle of Synne's life are brought to light, and she learns that while she may not have magic, she is still an integral part to the story being played out. One of my favorite things about this author's writing is that she pays just as much attention to the villains (and would be villains) of her stories, giving them interesting back stories and plot lines that intersect in such interesting ways. I was completely captivated by all of the goings-on and am anxious to learn the fate of the two witch sisters, especially in regards to Sybbyl.
This is the first Kindred book for me. As I opened to the first page, I wondered if I was going to be lost. Jumping into the fourth book in a series isn't always a wise thing to do. With that being said, there's so much backstory inside the covers of this book, there's no way anyone could get lost. And for that I'm going to say...Well done Donna Grant. Now, let me tell you about Evernight without any spoilers. [Hopefully]. Synne is a Hunter. Even though she's human. This girl is bada$$ and doesn't let the fact that she thinks she's ordinary hold her back from kicking butt and taking names. She's also a little broken and alot angry and I fell head over heels for this girl. Evernight is one of those books that sucks you into the story and doesn't want to let go. It is also one of those books that you just know something bad is about to happen and you don't want to keep reading, but you can't help yourself. People who read alot will get that. Anyway, this book is chock full of action and feels. Please don't miss this one. Thank you Donna Grant for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Synne's story opens as she is riding to find the Varroki. Synne is plagued by a tremendous loss as she recalls the attack at her home killing her adopted family and she is also haunted by her past where she is unable to remember anything before being brought to the abby. As Synne travels to the north she meets a man named Lachlan who escorts her across the land. Synne talks of her past, who she is and her desire to fight the coven. Lachlan finds he is drawn to her and believes in her and her path and decides to help her fight Sybbyl and the coven. Their fate seems to be intertwined. Synne learns of her heritage, her parents and of her grandmother, it also explains her deep fear of the Gira. Lachlan also retrieves the blood skull and learns he is the warden of it and must keep it out of the hands of the coven. As the war with the witches grows closer and the odds seems to keep stacking against them, The Hunters and the Varoki continue to persevere. Looking forward to the next installment to see what happens next. Donna Grant is an excellent writer and by far my favorite. I received an ARC from the author for my honest review.
This book was SO good!! I absolutely LOVED Lachlan & Synne so much!!
Synne is such a strong woman & Hunter. She is used to being on her own and even when she is with people it's like she is on the outskirts. She may be used to it, but she is lonely and longs for a family. She is brave and loyal and kind and when she meets Lachlan, he opens up Synne's world. Lachlan is a strong & brave warrior for his clan. He is loyal to his family and does anything and everything to protect them. He is also next in line to be laird of his clan. When he meets Synne, she opens up his world more than he could have imagined.
Together, they just work and balance each other. They show each other different perspectives on things and they each take what the other has knowledge of and absorbs it. I loved Jarin & Helena and Armir & Malene. I loved how they all banded together when needed. This book had me on the edge of my seat for most of the time and I was always so anxious wondering what was going to happen next. There are so many unknowns still and that epilogue just made me so anxious for the next book!!
