Bob and the crew are off to deliver a shipload of lost property to its rightful owners. What dangers, seen and unseen, will they find at this lost colony? Will there be new crew members, waiting to be found? Find out in Bob and Nikki’s latest adventure.
I’m a house husband. I keep things together while my wonderful wife makes our living. I’ve worked as a machinist, short order cook, electronics assembly tech, and several other jobs. My hobbies include vehicle maintenance, (I’ve had the transmission out of my truck. Twice) free flight airplanes, electronics, and shooting. I was born and raised in the Ozarks, and now live in Mid-Missouri.
There is a lot happening in this story, in fact there was probably too much going on to do justice to it all. I nearly used the word 'random' to describe the way some of the incidents were put together, but that wouldn’t be fair, however I did think the author threw in too many things all at once. However this was still an entertaining story. If possible I would have given 3.5 stars.
“Reading a well-written book consisting almost entirely of dialogue certainly is interesting, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is - especially when the characters and plot are fun. Add a meandering plot whose end is unknown, and it adds a certain spice.”
“Hmm. It does at that. Especially when you give the cheeky MC an alien warship to play with.”
“Well to be fair, the warship enjoys playing with itself, too. Wait, that didn’t sound right...”
Some stifled sniggering occurred.
“Okay, okay... I wonder what will happen next? The author is setting up some serious plot threads at the end, there.”
“Ah, no worries: it’s Bob. He’s seemed to manage so far, and whatever happens will be cool to watch. I really recommend that people pick up these books. Good stuff.”
“I’m sure it will be interesting to watch, but it may not always go the way you think.”
My opinion this series is as good as any scifi series I have read. It has humor and I believe the author has his tongue in cheek for just the right amount of it. It has a great story line awesome well developed characters. You do have to have the correct mindset to enjoy the book covers. If you are a traditional sci-fi fan please get past your need for flashy names and covers and enjoy a wonderful interesting series that anyone from eight to eighty right can enjoy. I am anxiously awaiting the rest of the series. The story is set for more great stories. Aliens, U.S. Government nasties, and a few Starfoot fights against enemies.
Bob is the captain of a very old salvaged colony ship temporarily, and rescues are still part of the program. But with the new job comes a lot of added complexity and scary responsibility.
When small colonies are found, Bob's "bad vibe" light starts to glow, and new crew members get a front row seat when Murphy's Law vacations nearby, making quick visits both easy and convenient.
Another well-known principle is underlined in bold font; no good deed goes unpunished. But nothing is quite typical, because it's Bob's Saucer Repair.
Crude language and content warning, dialed up from book 6. Adult subjects as well. PG-16.
A review by a 70-year reader of Syfy. (Yup, I said 70 years!)
Again, a great series! Loads of fun reading the twists and turns and almost constant action Mr. Boyd has laid out for his readers in this book #7. Through the years I have been a constant reader of Syfy, I have most enjoyed a writer who has as good sense of humor as Mr. Boyd has. He is able to include it so well in his Bob and Nikki series. Get the series, read the books and enjoy the series as I have so far. Now on to Book 8! 😁
Pretty fun to read. Especially as a casual read for fun and giggles.
Therefor I'm not super upset (but a little put out) that this book cooks the plot a little more than usual. There were places the plot points didn't quite jive with previous accounts or statements from books in the series. It also had a little extra convenience in a few plot points. Some were to the point of being repeats of previous events (practically).
With that said I still enjoyed it and will continue reading the series.
The most enjoyable series I have read in several years! Great characters, twisty plot lines, and enough cultural references to keep 4 generations happy. Space opera meets ethical characters and folks doing their best to do the right thing, in space with flying saucers, rejuv machines and plenty of bad guys to go around. AND I have another 20 or so weeks of reading material to go. (Ps Jerry Boyd skipped the creepy Heinlein sex scenes with underage girls—adult monogamy all the way, which I am really happy about.)
I still want more!!! We ( that is Bob and Nikki fans) can't t get enough. Your storiy lines are great, your humor a real treat. I read a lot of sci-fi and mysteries and any thing g else that looks good but seldom do
Do I find anything as enjoyable as this series. How old are you? Your rock and movie references are more from my era. (I'm 77) Thanks again and keep it comming.
Fun, serious, innovative, and thoughtful. More great characters, nicely developed plot, and lots more T.V.and movie Easter eggs. The pacing reminds me of E.E. Doc Smith's space opera writings. Things happened so rapidly that I finished this book in one sitting. Now, I can re-read it slowly enough to catch more of the nuances. Both the jokes and the philosophy. Thank you, Mr. Boyd!
The adventure s continue with Murphy gleefully pitching in to help with the Chinese curse. Just when you think you've got the past nailed down it has a sneaky way of slapping you upside the head. If you like to answer the question What now? with a decent side of humor this series and especially this installment is definitely for you. What will Bob and Nikki run into next? Tune in next for the next episode of As the World Gets Fixed by Bob
Discovered this series a week or so ago and have buzzed right through all of the books. I'm currently just over half way through this latest in the series and hoping there are more in the works.
The Bob and Nikki books have some flaws, but I've been able to overlook them due to the fun story, gentle humor, and interesting mix of humans, aliens, Bigfoots, and robots.
I promise a more in-depth review soon. Gotta get back to this book first!
My only real problem with this one and all that have come before it is the lack of chapters. That makes it hard to stop at a good place to get actual work done.😉
the story moves at a nice e pace, you wouldn't need to have read the others I. The series to appreciate this one, but it makes the running jokes much easier to laugh at if you have.
I’ve figured out that what draws me back with this series is how well Bob and the crew communicate. It’s just refreshing to see how good communication leads to life and challenges going smoother. Some parts (like them giving the entire explanation about the teaching machine every time they meet a new person) are redundant but it’s a comfortable redundant, like a familiar routine. This series is my literary TV sitcom and I love it
Very esoteric in its short-shrift extensive pop-culture references. Reader be warned, if you don't have a nifty Galactic watch you may be hard up.
On the whole the story and style is what it is and entertaining enough.. But!
The nonsensical repetition starts to become more annoying than the overall story is enjoyable after a while and with the sometime too iffy plot logic.. for me the tipping point was book 7.
I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every book in the series so far. The characters are lovable and fun. Nikki and Bob are a great couple and more delightful characters get added all the time. The story lines are smooth and leave you looking forward to the next installment. I hope the next one comes out soon.
If I can get Goodreads to work, this series is going on my "personal favorites" bookshelf. Smiles morph into chuckles that morph into laughter with an occasional face palm. Downright therapeutic. And just plain fun. Roids as an airborne environmental hazard???? 😲😷
This is probably one of the best books ever. It great because the writer !Alex his characters unique, clever, and to boot he throws in creative reference to parts of television series characters. The character interactions make you believe that are real living people.
I read the first book because I was board and the writer lived in the same region. I can see Missouri from my deck above Tablerock lake in Arkansas. Got hooked on the characters and the flow of the stories. Puttin fun in a story without reducing the reading experience is a talent. Looking forward to Boyd writing many more stories.
Just finished book seven. I've enjoyed Bob and Nicki's adventures. I found the many story lines interesting and well woven together. The ending of book 7 left many open threads. Hopefully Jerry will continue the adventure. One thought: I would have liked to know more what the characters looked like: both humans and bots. Overall a fun series. Good job!!!
Great mission, can't wait for the next books on audible. I know there is three now but I am hooked and can't wait. There is so many places the world building can take them my only real complaint is how hard it is to keep up with the characters especially when they get new names. Need to find a wiki. The narration is wonderful and hope for many more volumes before the story begins to taper
The series is improving I wish I could give half stars
The writing is improving and the plots remain interesting. There is less repetition of the 'good old boy folksiness' that was near overwhelming in the early books in the series. It continues to give the reader just what a space opera should and once more it has found me forking over the $3 for the next one.
I'm really getting tired of the racist blue eyes joke. Meaning it's only funny to imply brown eyed people are full of shit if have blue eyes. However, if possible to overlook inadvertent, and probably genuinely unintended racist comments, the book and the series are great. If only they'd stop repeating the insensitive crap
Bob and Nikki and crew find an ancient colony ship and end up on a rescue mission for a colony surrounded by dinosaur sized animals, but sometimes no good deed goes unpunished. Will the staff of Bob's Saucer Repair be found out? Another great book. I am really grateful to have found this series. These books are fun.
This series is so good I'm running out of superlatives to describe each one individually!
This is book number 7 of what is currently 35. Like the first six, it's funny, fun to read, and extremely difficult to put down. If you have already read the first six, you'll want to keep going. So I'll let you go and know you will enjoy this as much as I have!
Being originally from Arizona, and occasionally fun read. including a tripto Winslow, I can definitely recommend stopping by and checking out the park dedicated to one of the Eagle's songs, along with the big hole in the ground, made by an off planet visitor. As with the rest of the books in the series, this was a fun read.
I'm loving this series of books I've read 7 so far and I'm enjoying them all You should read them in order but if you can't they're still funny with each 1. Start with book 1 you'll get hooked they're funny as can be Fun to read interesting and makes you think a lot
No harem elements, no downers. Just plain fun reading. I did finally look up the talcum powder joke after years of hearing it. Rapid action without becoming nonsensical and leaving the plot line hanging.
Great fun to remember all the old movie references, from Marx Brothers, Gator Mclusky movies to Princess Bride ( Billy Crystals line " have fun storming the castle"). Can't wait for the next installment!
