I wish there were 10 more books just like this. A cute introduction to several rhyming word families with clear pictures and word labeling to teach word recognition as well as phonics. And the illustrations are very colorful and appealing, making it very interesting, even to a pre-reader.
The Bug in the Jug Wants a Hug written by Brian P. Cleary is a book that explores many short vowel sounds for children to learn. This story incorporates eccentric sentences that can assist children in their attention and focus in regards to cognitive skills. This book teaches word recognition and is beneficial for practicing vowel sounds. Along with strengthening phonetic skills, it will further strengthen language skills by introducing new words with short vowels. The rhyming in the story can assist in identifying and connecting words that look and/or sound the same or similar. If a child who I am working with is challenged by short vowel sounds, this would be a helpful tool to share with them to help grow their speech and language skills.
Fun book that was easy for my learning reader to catch on. Most of the words on each page rhyme. The title is featured on a page, but it goes through all the short vowels. There are pictures for 3 of the words that rhyme, but sometimes there's a 4th word. With the picture help, my son was able to get the featured words. I had him read those, and then we would read the sentence in turns. Me: The Him: bug Me: in the Him: Jug Me: wants a Him: Hug And if there was a 4th word without a picture I would help him sound it out. We will definitely be checking more out from the library. Some of the pages were funny, others were cute. Lots of pages and examples.
This book is great for beginning readers! The text is decodable, which means that if children know the letter sounds, they should be able to figure out the text in this book. It does include some sight words as well! I think kindergarteners would have so much fun reading this book! It acts as an introduction to rhyming words and poems. This would go great with a lesson on rhyming words!
The illustrations are very vivid and promote meaning behind the words. Because of this, even if a child cannot sound out a word they can most likely figure it out from the pictures. If I ever teach kindergarten, I would definitely show my class this book!
This book does not have a strong story line but it is still a very fun book to read. It really focuses on the short vowel sounds within different words and makes sure to make it a point throughout the book which words were being focused on. In addition to this the illustrations were very good and even though this book did not really have a story line I still believe that students will have a really fun time reading this.
While this might teach sounds, it didn't overwhelm me. Sentences were odd. I wonder about audience.
Also, as a child (and for me now) I would worry about the rat being suffocated by the cat and also about the bug being claustrophobic. I was sensitive as a child and I still am even if the intention was humor. I would logically understand, but still take things seriously.
A wonderful rhyming book. A simple beginners book. It helps identify the same sounding words (rhyming) and teaches how to identify short vowel sounds (as it says on the book). on the left side of the book it has three pictures and under them has a work that identifies it. On the right page it had a picture and a sentence with the words on the left page. then after you read the sentence there is a question the child has to answer.
My son and I read this book many times. It was so cute. And silly. My son loves rhyming words, as all early readers do, I think. This book created long sentences of rhyming words using various short vowel sounds. And then the illustrations brought them to life. It was just plain fun.
This was just as good as the flip-a-word books for earliest readers. There are 3, 4 or 5 rhyming words on each pair of pages, so there are several word "families" in this book. Another great way to instill a love of reading, through pride of accomplishment, I think.
A fun and colorful phonics primer that encourages children to read with silly rhyming narrative. Each page focuses on one sound with a bunch of different three-letter words depicted. Our girls thought the illustrations were funny and enjoyed reading this story aloud to me.
