The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
"This was a really odd book. I'd heard good things about it and as I seem to be on a roll with puzzle mysteries at the moment, I was excited to discover that my local library had finally obtained a copy, albeit an ebook. I zipped through it in thre..." Read more of this review »

Interesting and clever, but too far-fetched for me to really get into it.

Amazingly for a novel written in 1978, there is very little to date it apart from reference to a typewriter and use of the term Mongoloid to describe a child. Now republished in

2019: Worth rereading.

2016: Entertaining and clever. At first it was slightly too similar to the prequel, The Ring of Solomon, but the second half was outstanding. I saw one of the closing twists coming, but that didn't spoil it.

I'm going to read the

The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin
" Do I like this book?

I'm really not sure. Maybe I should have followed the GR reading order, as at the start I was very confused. But this tale of two separate planets, seen through the eyes of the intelligent & (originally) idealistic Shevek..." Read more of this review »

I've heard David Holmgren speak twice: once about Peak Oil about 10 years ago, and once recently about this book. He is always interesting to listen to, is well read and has a lot of ideas. The Peak Oil emergency didn't eventuate, but Holmgren believ ...more

“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”
Walter Cronkite

Georgette Heyer
“I don't ask you - fribble!' snapped his lordship, rounding on him, with the speed of a whiplash. 'You may keep your tongue between your teeth!'

"Yes, sir - happy to!' uttered Claud, dismayed. 'No wish to offend you! Thought you might like to be set right!'

'Thought I might like to be set right?'

'No, no! Spoke without thinking!' said Claud hastily. ' I know you don't!”
Georgette Heyer, The Unknown Ajax

Jackie French
“I'd love to see a new form of social security ... everyone taught how to grow their own; fruit and nut trees planted along every street, parks planted out to edibles, every high rise with a roof garden, every school with at least one fruit tree for every kid enrolled.”
Jackie French, New Plants from Old

Zig Ziglar
“Rich people have small TVs and big libraries, and poor people have small libraries and big TVs.”
Zig Ziglar

Johann Hari
“It isn’t the drug that causes the harmful behavior—it’s the environment. An isolated rat will almost always become a junkie. A rat with a good life almost never will, no matter how many drugs you make available to him. As Bruce put it: he was realizing that addiction isn’t a disease. Addiction is an adaptation. It’s not you—it’s the cage you live in.”
Johann Hari, Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs
