Nothing like starting out a vacation – or a book – by being arrested because you’re mistaken to be a notorious murderer. Such is the case for Elizabeth’s brother, and the duo can’t seem to convince anyone that they’ve got the wrong person.

The author does a great job with Elizabeth’s character in Lone Star Ranger. She’s a realistic blend of worried sister and determined woman. You can feel the emotions she battles, her struggles to defend her brother’s innocence in a town where no one knows them. Yet she has an inner strength despite her fears, and her perseverance is to be admired. I loved her spunkiness and bravery, and her run-ins with Rett are often amusing throughout.

It does feel at times that the story development could have been more consistent, more layered. Especially the last few chapters when Rett goes off to make sure they do have the right guy – with Elizabeth trailing along behind him to prove that they don’t. I thought both acted slightly inconsistently with what we’d seen in them for the rest of the book, and the wrap-up of emotions when all was said and done seemed a big leap from where they started before all heck broke loose.

Bottom Line: Even with a few inconsistencies, Lone Star Ranger is an enjoyable romance with all the right elements – brave, plucky heroine; swoony Texas Ranger hero; life-or-death in the balance. It’s a light story and a quick read, and you’ll enjoy watching Elizabeth and Rett butt heads & fall in love. I particularly loved the supporting character Amelia Cooper, and I’m delighted to see that she’s the protagonist in Green’s next book Ranger to the Rescue!

Beware the Determined Woman!!

Accustomed to being stared at because of her height, Elizabeth Covington is surprised to sense people in this little Texas town they are visiting seem to be staring at her lawyer brother, instead. She is even more flabbergasted when a Texas Ranger and a sheriff arrest her brother, claiming he is an infamous bandit wanted for many cruel murders.

While drawn to Ranger Rett Smith, Elizabeth is also off-put by the fact he refuses to listen to her pleas of her brother's innocence. With the moral support of another courageous young lady, Elizabeth follows every trail that might prove the mistaken identity. Finally, she decides to follow the hardest and least likely to succeed trail of all--that of Ranger Smith as he embarks on the trail of rumors of the murderer in a distant area.

This is a sweet romance with lessons of learning to wait on God, giving people a second chance at our trust, listening to God and not being afraid to question the obvious. Elizabeth is shown to be a spunky, take-charge character, but one who has faith lessons to learn like many of us."She believed in God. She trusted Him even.BUT SHE TRUSTED HERSELF MORE.She wasn't keen on waiting and with God, one almost always had to wait." What a soul-selfie of most of us!!

I haven't read anything by this author before, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will look for more by her.

Elizabeth and Evan Covington are looking for a new place to start their new life. He's recently graduated from law school and after losing their father, they need a new start. Before they get far though, Evan is arrested for being a most wanted murdering outlaw.

Elizabeth has to convince Ranger Rett Smith that Evan is her brother, not an outlaw. This story is full of humor but also very serious. The writing was well balanced. The story had no problem keeping my attention and I loved all the humor.

LONE STAR RANGER is a short and sweet western romance with danger, a headstrong leading lady, and a rugged, Texas Ranger leading man. It's a case of mistaken identity played out in the west with a ruthless outlaw to find in order to save a man's life. Christian historical romance readers who are looking for something fun to read may enjoy this story.

This reminded me quite a bit of a penny novel. It's a short read and on the lighter side, with a strong inspirational element. The characters are all likable and the plot has some exciting moments, even if unrealistic. I really liked both Elizabeth and Rett and thought they played their roles well. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if the mistaken identity would have felt more realistic. I just couldn't get over why a telegram couldn't be sent back east to Boston to clear things up, so I really had to suspend belief. Stories work better for me if they're plausible.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Overall, this was an enjoyable story. I did have one big hangup, but I think most readers can ignore it and still find this quite entertaining.

Content: Some violence, but clean.

The Lone Star Ranger***** by Renae Brumbaugh

Elizabeth Covington is a determined young woman. While visiting Texas with her brother, Evan, he is arrested for murder! There has been a mistake, just because he looks like the criminal, he is not the man they are looking for. How can she get them to listen? Will she have to take matters into her own hands to prove Evan is indeed her brother?

Texas Ranger Rett Smith arrests the infamous outlaw, James Weston Hardy. But something is not right—Hardy came peacefully—he is not a peaceful man. Could that woman, Elizabeth be right? Or is she part of his gang and trying to throw him off? It's 1877 in Houston, TX where justice is carried out swiftly, so Rett needs to be sure he has arrested the right man. He couldn't live with himself if an innocent man is hanged.

This is a sweet romance, a romance that started out with Rett and Elizabeth at odds with each other. Elizabeth is a spunky, take charge woman and very determined to prove Evan's innocence—alone if she has too. Along the way she learns valuable lessons, trusting God more than trusting her own abilities is a real eye-opener and impacts her life greatly. Rett sets out to gather information about Hardy and his gang. Rett leaves to gather information on Hardy but he has a surprise, someone is following him. I enjoyed the secondary characters as much as Elizabeth and Rett. I loved the humor that is woven throughout the story, finding myself chuckling along with the story. Adventure, unexpected surprises, delightful humor, romance, second chances and faith all make for a sweet romance.

My Thoughts on Lone Star Ranger:
Historical fiction is one of my favorites! Here we have this great heroine. She’s spunky and independent. Plus she’s super loyal to her brother and will stop at nothing to prove his innocence. After all, he’s not the man they think he is. Even is the lawman is good looking, he’s definitely not right about her brother.

While trying to prove her brother is innocent Elizabeth gets to experience quite the adventures. But she comes through unscathed. Or does she? Her heart just might not survive. It’s a race against time to prove her brother’s innocence and a race against love to keep from falling for the handsome lawman.

This is going to be a series and I’m excited to read the next book as one of the supporting characters from this one will show up as a main character. I love when you get to learn and develop more on a secondary character!

Great read. It’s a fast and fun read. You’re not going to be looking over your shoulder in suspense so this is perfect for a late-night read while everyone else is sleeping.

There's nothing better for me in a historical fiction than a good western story with a strong female lead and a male who doesn't know what to do with her! That is the case with this good. I thoroughly enjoy every part of this book! Rett Smith is a Texas Ranger and he is excited when he is directed to a man who is the exact likeness of a serial killer. When he puts him in jail, he is very happy that the man who has terrorized the area for a long while. However, Elizabeth Covington is flabbergasted when Rett arrests her brother right at their table as they are eating lunch! Rett says he's a serial killer but she knows that isn't true even though he sure looks exactly like the photo of the man they are looking for! She is going to prove her brother isn't the murderer if it's the last she does! When she tags along with Rett (without his knowledge) across the dangerous Texas prairie, will they find the real killer within a week before her brother is put to death?
I couldn't put this book down. The characters were fantastic, the story was engaging and the secondary characters added so much to the story too! I was thrilled that the publisher sent me a copy but I wasn't required to review it! These opinions are my own and I highly recommend it!

This is a fun Western fiction novel written by Renae Brumbaugh. It’s the first book I've read by this author, but it certainly won’t be my last. The setting is 1877 in Houston, TX. The characters are Elizabeth and Evan Covington, siblings from back east traveling together after Evan’s recent graduation from Harvard Law. The cast also includes Everett “Rett” Smith, a TX ranger, his Ranger coworkers, and the local sheriff. Unfortunately for Evan Covington, he is the spitting image of a wanted criminal in TX – wanted dead or alive. Texas Ranger Smith arrests Evan when a concerned citizen points him out. The adventure begins for Elizabeth as she has the daunting task of proving her brother is a case of mistaken identity before he hangs in a weeks’ time. The personalities of the characters develop throughout the story and they are very likeable. If you like Westerns with a touch of romance, you will really enjoy this book.

Elizabeth and her brother, Evan, have just arrived in town and are eating at the local diner when a Texas Ranger arrests Evan. Evan is accused of being a notorious outlaw who is known as a cold-blooded killer. But Elizabeth can't let her brother hang for crimes he didn't commit. So her sets out to prove his innocence. The only thing in her way is the pesky Texas Ranger named Rett. But Elizabeth is not going to let that slow her down.

The story starts off quickly and the tension between the two main characters is very defined. The book was a quick read that I enjoyed. The story focused on the false arrest and the main characters trying to get to the bottom of the story. There wasn't a lot of back story or very many secondary characters since so much of the focus was spent on the accusation. The story ended abruptly and I wasn't ever clear just how the issues with the brother were resolved. Readers of romantic westerns would enjoy the feel and drama of this story.

The author has placed this story in old Texas and this is a rather rough lawless time, and the local sheriff and Texas Rangers are kept busy.
A brother and sister still reeling from the recent death of their beloved father are taking a trip to help find closure.
Then the unthinkable happens, and makes you wonder how often things like this really did happen?
Thus, the story is born and you really don’t know if the truth will arrive in time, and or if all will survive, and we face some tough terrain and people, but I loved the faith of these folks!
This is a very fast read, and it quickly became a page-turner, I needed answers!

A fun historical western

My rating is 3.5 stars

Lone Star Ranger is the first book in a series by Renae Brumbaugh Green, a new-to-me author. It appears to be a re-release from 2015.

Elizabeth and her brother, Evan, were on a pleasure trip shortly after the death of their father. Little did they expect to have Evan end up in jail – with a hanging threatened, based on his resemblance to a notorious outlaw!

Elizabeth was spunky and brave, though at least a little foolhardy. She was devoted to her brother and did all she could to rescue him. It was amusing she was such a tall woman. That is not a common characteristic in stories of this period.

The story was fun as Elizabeth and Rett crossed swords figuratively over her investigation of her brother's innocence. I also enjoyed her interactions with the people in town.

There was a little bit of a spiritual element with both Elizabeth and Rett praying. It wasn't strong and the scriptures shared were from the Psalms. There was nothing that would point to the specific belief of the characters, other than they believed in God and accepted the Psalms as inspired scripture. There was also not a life-change in the story. It is for these reasons I do not classify this as Christian fiction.

The adventures seemed a little far-fetched. How this city-bred woman could have tracked a Texas Ranger across the state was a little hard to believe, especially when she was not observant and even got lost in town. There were also some inconsistencies in the concern (and lack of it, at one point) about the propriety of a single man and woman spending nights on the trail together. Hmm.

Overall, the story was a quick, fun read. Lovers of Western fiction are the ideal readers for this story.

Texas, August 1877. On a trip to celebrate her brother Evan’s graduation from Harvard Law School, Elizabeth Covington finds herself in a quandary when Evan is wrongly accused of being a wanted criminal responsible for the murders of dozens of people. He will be hung in one week unless he can be proven innocent. Because of her own extensive knowledge about law, despite being female and therefore unqualified for such a career, Elizabeth sets out to gather the information that will affirm Evan’s identity.

This historical novel by Renae Brumbaugh emphasizes trusting in and relying on God regardless of what others may say or how things may appear. We don’t really grow or mature in our faith until we face trials that seem terrible at the time but that are actually cultivating the fruit of the Spirit within us. “Lone Star Ranger” drives this point home through the main characters. Elizabeth portrays a nineteenth-century woman drawn to the untamed nature of Texas, which matches the rebellious streak within herself. In regard to this, she is what I visualize as an early suffragette. Albeit naïve in some ways, she also proves to be intelligent and resourceful. Her relationships have always been platonic, so throwing Rett, a Texas Ranger, into the mix leads to an entertaining story! Far too often I identity with Elizabeth’s feelings: “Oh, she believed in God. Trusted Him, even. But she trusted herself more. She wasn’t keen on waiting, and with God, one almost always had to wait.” Part of this comes, in Elizabeth’s case, from being very tall and studying the law informally. The faith aspect is a poignant reminder that God’s plans are always better than our own, and that when we wait patiently, we experience His divine protection and love.

What happens when mistaken identity takes your loving brother away from you and you must fight against a vigilante crowd and a very stubborn Texas Ranger to prove his innocence. That is what Elizabeth must do if she is going to save her brother, Evan, from a town that hangs first and asks questions later.

What a desperate situation these two siblings find themselves in. They are grieving their late father and have decided to take a vacation. Coming from Boston they step into Texas which appears to be run by very different rules. Both Evan and Elizabeth know time is running out to prove his innocence and I felt the tension radiating off Elizabeth and the hopelessness off of Evan.

Rett, the arresting Texas Ranger, can't get rid of the niggling feeling that maybe this beautiful Elizabeth is who she says she and her 'brother' are. But it is going to take a miracle, like getting the real killer to save him.

The adventure and more danger pick up as that is exactly what Rett and Elizabeth aim to do. Whether they do it together is another question.

The author brought to life a very dangerous time and situation that had me reading quickly and feeling as aggravated as Elizabeth. This is the beginning of a series that I look forward to more of.

It is August, 1877 and Elizabeth Covington's life is about to change. A trip to Houston, Texas with her brother Evan turns into a rip-roaring adventure when he is accused of being the notorious criminal James Weston Hardy and she is forced to prove his innocence. Add one Texas Ranger who is sure that Evan has killed several people and you have a book worthy of any Western story that you've ever seen on TV or in a movie!

Lone Star Ranger is filled with mystery and adventure but there is also humor and laughter as Elizabeth works to prove that Evan is not a murderer! I enjoyed the interaction between Elizabeth and Rett Smith because this determined Texas Ranger is challenged by five-foot-eleven Elizabeth and she is more than capable of defending her brother! But then, as they are thrown together in dangerous situations, Elizabeth and Rett realize that their differences may not be as strong as they thought.

This is an enjoyable story of determination, faith, and learning to fully trust in God. If you enjoy Christian romance and historical fiction set in the Old West, you will want to read Lone Star Ranger by Renae Brumbaugh Green.

I forget how much I enjoy Renea’s writing. I have read a couple of her books and they are so well crafted, she immediately draws me into the store. This book was no exception.
This is also a quick read, it didn’t take me much time at all, it helped that it was such an interesting story.
Elizabeth is a determined young woman who doesn’t fit into the mold of how a woman should act, but that doesn’t stop her, not when it means life or death for her brother.
Rett is a wonderful hero who starts to question his eagerness to arrest a man who looks like Hardy, but he isn’t afraid to admit he might have been wrong.
I also appreciated how Elizabeth and Rett start turning toward God and realize how much they need Him in their lives.
I’m looking forward to the next book in this series, if it’s anything like this one it promises to engaging.

What a fun story to read! The author has taken characters from one world and transplanted them into a completely different environment. Evan and Elizabeth Covington have grown up relatively sheltered by wealth and prestige in Boston. Finding themselves in Houston, Texas, they learn quite quickly that the life is very different here. As Evan is accused of being a notorious criminal, Elizabeth sets out to prove his innocence. What follows is a wonderful story of some of the most incredible scrapes she could possibly get into. Between shaking my head and laughing out loud, I had no trouble enjoying the whole book. She certainly is a woman to be reckoned with, but will she and the Texas Ranger manage to prove Evan’s innocence before it is too late?

This was the first book I had ever read from author Renae Brumbaugh. At first I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this book as I expected it to be full of cliche characters and predictable plot. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out-of-the-ordinary female characters with atypical careers and interests.

The plot was intriguing as well. Elizabeth’s brother Evan is mistaken for a notorious criminal, arrested, & will soon hang if Elizabeth cannot prove his identity. The local ranger who arrested Evan is determined that Elizabeth is lying, but her sincerity and discrepancies about Evan himself begin chipping away at his resolve. With the town preparing for the hanging and time slipping away, what should he do?

This novel was a quick read and well-suited for young adult/teen readers.

Lone Star Ranger was a great book. This is the first book by this author I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. She not only keeps the story moving, but she adds humor and quips and personality to her characters that keep the reader interested. When I first saw the sweet cover and read the synopsis for Lone Star Ranger I knew I wanted to read this novel ASAP. Boy, am I glad I did. This novel is fun! I found the plot to be stellar — fast-paced and highly engaging. I was turning pages so quickly I would have gotten papercuts if I had read a paperback copy. The characters are darling and quite endearing. And I love the example both Rett and Elizabeth illustrate in regards to a unique and strong prayer relationship with God. All in all, Lone Star Ranger by Renae Brumbaugh Green is a homerun read that I highly recommend. If you are a fan of sweet, clean Westerns then this book is definitely for you!

Lone Star Ranger contains a lot of action right from the get-go. There’s mistaken identity, a murderer on the loose, and a cross-state chase. And, there is a fun romance borne out of misunderstanding, frustration, and hijinks. There is a lot in this little story that would make anyone feel off-kilter and as if the world is nothing but chaos. What I enjoyed the most about this sweet story is that Rett and Elizabeth don’t lose hope when things get crazy, instead, they go to God. Both characters have a unique relationship with God that feels genuine and realistic. I love how both talk to God as if He were their closest Friend and Confidant. I found their honest, heartfelt prayers to be my favorite moments in this story. Rett and Elizabeth are great examples of how to be in relationship with God; and, while there is a ton of engaging action throughout this story, this illustration of relationship with God is what I loved the most.

Lone Star Ranger by Renae Brumbaugh Green is a super fun read that I enjoyed greatly. I highly recommend this story, and very much look forward to future novels in this series.

Everett and Elizabeth

This is a loving, exciting and adventurous story. Rest is a Texas Ranger and because of mistaken identity he arrests Beths brother for robbery and murder. He is mistaken for a well known criminal. The town decided she is to be hanged and Beth learns the true criminal had been seen in a nearby town. Ranger Rett Smith is going to try to locate the crook and bring him back to prove to the town he has mistakenly arrested the wrong man. Beth decides to follow Rett and help capture the crook. You will enjoy discovering how Beths brother gets released from jail and Rett and Beth find their happily ever after.

Don't underestimate her

Elizabeth & her brother Evan have enjoyed their journey so far but it changes when he is arrested. Elizabeth has tried to explain that they have the wrong man but Raft doesn't believe her. She has no choice but to try & find the man that the Texas rangers are looking for. Rest can't believe the lengths that she will go to prove that he is wrong. But can he keep her out of trouble? A good read. They suit each other and they are both willing to listen

I liked Elizabeth's independence and the support her father and brother gave her in pursuing law in the ways available to women at that time. I found Rett's desire to do the right thing to be both touching and appropriate for the new Texas Ranger. However, I never really bought Elizabeth and Rett as a couple, so their marriage at the end felt forced.

Don't count on not falling in love.

When Elizabeth Covington witnessed her her brother, Evan, by Texas Ranger Rhett Smith, she was horrified. Mistaken identity put Evan in jail.
Elizabeth was going to help her brother and prove him innocent. Can joining with Rhett to the real killer bring her closer to finding her true love?

Delightful and action packed

Loved this story! Sweet love story, nothing steamy, lots of action. Best of all a strong female character who is fully capable in her own right. She can rescue just as easily as she can be rescued.
