I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Dirty Lazy Keto cookbook is a fantastic cookbook for dieters looking for a pretty straightforward, easy to use keto cooking and recipes.
The book starts out with a background on the author and how she discovered the dirty, lazy keto cooking and then goes on to explain what it is, how it works, what to do etc.
The recipes are easy to follow and understand and about 1/3 of the recipes show a photograph of the finished dish. This book is aimed at people looking for cooking keto dishes on a cheaper budget, but they all sound amazing.
The Dirty Lazy Keto Cookbook Stephanie Laska William Laska January 7, 2020
Due to the popularity of the Keto diet there are many forms of Keto diet and cookbooks on the market. As we are on the diet, I have read a few and looked through the recipes provided. The Laska’s book is a new look at being Keto. It gives those on the diet who don’t adhere to the heavy duty rules a chance to lose weight without following the intense counting and purchasing of expensive additives that Keto originally came out with. It is not to say that those of us who are ‘Dirty Keto’ dieters don’t count our carbs and cut out sugar. We do. Many folks cannot afford the expensive sugar replacements preferred by many proponents of the diet. A large bag of stevia to use for baking and cooking works as well as the expensive brand. Her method of losing weight works. It is Keto, just revising it so the diet can be worked in with family meals. In our house we are both on Keto so we don’t have to plan for others eating non-Keto foods. When shopping I do just like Stephanie recommends. That is, to check the grid that lists the contents of the food on the box or package. Yes, we need to trust the label but it also means we need to understand how to read the label correctly to know the net carb count. She gives the reader hints on what to look for at the grocery, where to shop, and what to avoid. The recipes are familiar as I have used some. There were some that I plan to try, things that I had not thought of. Most of us who crave comfort food check the internet for a Keto equivalent and how to change the recipe from what we are used to. The authors have done the work for many food choices. They provide the recipe and if necessary suggest where to find the item. Easy directions are given and in most cases a photo is provided. In the beginning a fairly complete list of Keto food categories is given. It would be worth making a copy to take shopping if you are new to the diet. I like having a convenient list to check as I am cooking and am not sure. I do have Google available in my kitchen and at times ask for carb values of a food before using it. You may wonder if we have lost weight? It has been six months and we have both have lost a substantial amount. Yes we will continue using the diet as it is healthy, nutritious and easy to plan meals. The Dirty, Lazy Keto Cookbook by Stephanie and Bill Laska will be published by Adams Media on January 7, 2020. It is a good resource for new recipes as well as ways to plan meals without spending a fortune and yet sticking to the diet.
My doctor told me I need to go low carb and high protein for my epilepsy. Keto was originally designed as a treatment for epilepsy and my neurologist recommended a low carb, high protein, moderate keto lifestyle to see if that combined with medication would help my seizures in both frequency and severity. I've been researching and downloading every book available to find recipes that would fit my family's tastes and I've found a lot of recipes, but I've always been afraid of the cravings and the strict rules. Then I discovered Lazy Keto. As long as it fits in my macros I can eat it. I can have chocolate. I can have most vegetables (most strict keto diets have a long list of vegetables that you can't eat. I love my veggies.) I can have breadsticks and pizza! Stephanie Laska credits her 140 pound weight loss to lazy keto because of the same reasons. Strict keto is too restricting and daunting for some people. The macros, the ketosis strips, the standing in the aisle monitoring every ingredient. The expense. And because most foods require making from spice mixes on, what if you aren't big on cooking or don't have time to make a recipe that takes an hour and a half or more plus prep every night? Lazy keto has given me hope that I can be successful, and Stephanie's "if I can, you can" point of view and her tips for "shortcuts" alleviate some of my fears about giving up halfway through the year. I will admit, the titles of the recipes were cheesy, and I'm not sure I'll ever believe radishes can be a substitute for potatoes in hash browns. But, there were many recipes for real food that my family will eat happily. It wasn’t 50 recipes for fat bombs and a few main dishes that involve 20 ingredients and a half a day. This will be a cookbook that will be kept closely on hand during meal planning days.
Fairly new to the world of Keto, I was interested in reviewing this book simply because of the title -- and I wasn't disappointed. Ms. Laska's description of her weight-loss journey that brought her to trying keto is completely relate-able; as is her views on keto. It's something I don't enjoy at all due to restrictions, but I can't deny its positive effects so far. Since this is a kindle book, I couldn't see the layout or design of the cookbook however the recipes and down-to-earth writing is something that I enjoyed. I will be using this book as a reference for sure.
I love this cookbook not just because I'm a self proclaimed lazy keto dieter but because it's an honest real life story from someone I can proclaim as a diet champion. That is not to say I will use every recipe or it's perfect. What I'm saying is it's open honest, refreshing and filled with solid ideas on how not too keto yourself into an anxiety attack and still successfully lose weight.
If your a die hard keto person you wont like this book so just skip it. If you want to keto for life but keep it simple real and do-able you may be in heaven with it.
I like the honest approach no judgment bend the rules approach and I've found plenty of recipes to use and/or modify to my taste.
This book is fun whitty and has tons if recipes I enjoy. Also the author is very responsive to questions and as stated in the book sent me a printable shopping list. I'm actually pretty impressed by that. I received this book fir an honest review and I say if your a flexible dieter you should give it a try.
3.5 stars, more like. I was hoping to be inspired by this cookbook (any cookbook I pick up), but this one is just meh for me. I'm all in support of a version of keto that's more loose guidelines than strict macro-counting, and the focus here is clearly on less carbs, not necessarily high fat. There were a dozen recipes I'm going to try, and hopefully they turn out great. I wish each had an accompanying photo, because that always helps me understand what to expect, but alas. I liked the Tips & Tricks she included, but was a little lost on her lack of specification about no-carb sweeteners in recipes (they vary wildly in sweetness and texture, and I don't know if her vagueness means any can be used, wet or dry, but then she also refers to them as packets, so maybe she only means Splenda or Monkfruit? I'm a bit confused, and clearly it's going to be trial and error. Nothing here was too earth-shattering, but on the flipside, it was nice to hear that most of the recipes can be made it under an hour.
Amazing recipes for anyone on the Keto diet. The author lets you know you don't have to stick strict to the recipe but things are interchangeable in it The recipes are delicious and the authors story is inspirational. Keto works!
I'm so glad I decided to give this one a try because this is now my favorite cookbook! Stephanie's story is such an inspiration, but the best part is her funny, quirky, and realistic attitude towards dieting, eating, and so on. We are by no means avid Keto dieters, however, I love digging through Keto recipes to make because my husband is Diabetic. Whenever I can find low carb recipes that are filling and yummy, I get so excited. When he doesn't know they are low carb - even better!
The layout of this book is simple and logical with recipes divided into breakfast, snacks, salads/soups, and so on. Budget-friendly shoppers will appreciate the simple ingredients that won't cost a fortune, in addition to the fact that things can be substituted here and there using a little common sense and creativity. Honestly, there are hot dogs on the approved list. This is something that's on sale all of the time, filling, and you can do anything from boiling them to grilling them and they are tasty. I'm not a fan of radishes so I will be skipping all of the recipes including radishes, but the point is, there is a little bit of something for everyone in this book!
I just downloaded this the other day and have already made the Starbucks Egg Bites (which were amazing), the Hangover Bacon-Wrapped Pickles (also amazing), and the Drunken Pot Roast (which was very tasty, but my hubby was missing carrots and potatoes, nevertheless). The next recipe I am trying is the McDonald's Cheeseburger soup and I can't wait!
I highly recommend this one for people that are wanting to be carb conscious eaters without having to completely change their lives. This is simple, realistic, and doable.
*Thanks to NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO Cookbook by Stephanie and William Laska was a gem to dive into. I found the author's style to be fun, open and similar to chatting with a friend about real life nutrition. She talks about the path she took and invites readers to explore and find a path that works for them. She is a relief to read in the day of Keto Police reprimanding each and every thing that doesn't fall into strict keto guidelines. Lets face it, there are many people who have lost incredible amounts of weight by altering keto to fit their lifestyle. A judgement and guilt free zone is what we are all looking for to investigate what works AND what doesn't for our chemistry.
The beginning of this book is super helpful on the basics of a keto way of eating, useful for both the beginner and the knowledgeable. There are pages of grocery lists included complete with net carb counts. The selection of recopies is amazing. The author also states that if you don't like one, skip over it. Don't like an ingredient? Swap it out with another and make it your own. She doesn't require ingredients that are hard to find or out of most household budgets (i.e.: Dolla Store Pumpkin Soup). The recipes range from the simple (Olive Garden Salad) to the gourmet (Basil Coconut Curry Shrimp).
I have read many Keto cookbooks and this one is by far the most useful for me. I will be revisiting it time and time again. Many thanks to Netgalley and Adams Media for the opportunity to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Of note, I have never given another keto cookbook a 5 star rating!
Incredibly impressed with this cookbook. I have been low carb/keto for about a month and was getting bored with chicken breast and turkey patties. Extremely clear net carb count at the start of every recipe. The author has a family, so the recipes are pretty straightforward and simple with readily available ingredients. My Fiance is NOT low carb and he has been eating these recipes and really enjoys them as well (plus it's easy to add carbs for the non-Keto peeps in the house). Here are some recipes we tried:
*Stuffed Chicken for Suppah: DELICIOUS. Tasted really decadent and was pretty easy to assemble. We had the increase the cooking time because our chicken breasts were pretty thick. 5/5
*Raddish Potatoes: These straight-up taste like potatoes. Keep in mind they cook down a lot- we doubled the recipe. 5/5
*Drop the Chopsticks Bowl: Another amazing dish. Chinese is something I was missing and this really evokes the right flavors and textures. I added some cauliflower rice and stir-fried it (added soy sauce and an egg). 5/5
*Turkey Taco Boats: Another hit in the household- we subbed low carb tortillas. 5/5
*Topless Burgers: I really enjoyed this but my mom felt as though it was too rich (the portabella was similar to a second patty) So this would be great if you find yourself hungry. We also omitted the shredded apple. 3/5
I loved this book. The best advice was stick to what works for you! LOVED that the author did not go all crazy and say YOU MUST follow these recipes. NO! She was open and honest and said, hey if you like something try to make it more Keto Friendly, here is what I have found. The book is neatly organized, has a TON of pics of food, and is easy to understand. Plus the best part, the author does not have you buy EXPENSIVE ingredients that you would only use once. These ingredients can be found in just about EVERY grocery store. The dessert section was by far my favorite! Loved all of the recipes...most I had never heard of and can't wait to try! BRAVO! A GREAT COOKBOOK!
All the writing outside of the 100 recipes - about 50 pages - is basically the author setting up a deprogramming for the normal Keto mindset, or an apology for the Keto approach, or a justification for a variation - anyway, a long ramble about how the other part of the Keto community is a bit obsessive and needs to chill out like she has. Doesn't provide any nutritional reason for her changes, other than it works for her.
As for the recipes, they are easy to make and mostly affordable. Not every recipe has a picture. The husband and wife team creating the cookbook worked on making things accessible to the average home cook. This could be useful for someone on a weight loss journey.
Cons: The recipes were so-so. The nutrition advice is problematic. The author derides people she calls the "keto police" then gives bad advice about artificial sweeteners and more. There is so much research proving the harm artificial sweeteners can cause, it's irresponsible for anyone writing a book on nutrition to brush it off.
Bottom line: Please work with a qualified nutrition professional trained in the implementation of a ketogenic diet to learn how to make it work for your body, budget, and goals.
The Dirty, Lazy, Keto Cookbook: Bend the Rules to Lose the Weight, is my third Stephanie Laska, MEd, book, and I love it as much as I loved the other two. I’d actually started backward in that I found the Dirty, Lazy, Keto Fast Food Guide: 10 Carbs or Less, first. It is was what prompted me to seek out and buy Dirty, Lazy, Keto: Getting Started: How I Lost 140 Pounds. The Cookbook rocks as hard as the other two. The common denominator of them all – Stephanie Laska, MEd. She is real, relevant, and reaching from the first word of her first book to the last word of her latest. It’s impossible not to trust someone who’s character does not falter. Stephanie provides recipes that follow her tried and true weight loss regime, based on the ketogenic diet principles. Her recipes use ingredients that most of us have in our homes already, or are easily attainable and affordable. They are the ingredients she has used to achieve success. She also acknowledges that for a plan to work, it must be tweaked to each person’s own preferences. She clearly states that what works for one does not work for all, and the most important thing is to take her suggestions and make them our own, so it can work for us too. Laska’s sage and practical advice, “Work with your habits, not against them… don’t try to change who you are. DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.” The Dirty, Lazy, Keto Cookbook has all the key components of a cookbook that’s purpose is to effectively join hands with a healthier lifestyle. The introductory commentary is quick and to the point, full of Stephanie’s wisdom as well as her wonderfully sharp wit. (I don’t think I stopped giggling throughout.) It provides nutritional information, how to calculate, and explains why that data is important. It lists foods to avoid as well as providing alternatives to substitute while making the transition, and weekly grocery lists. The recipes are also coded, categorizing them in various groups from budget-friendly to fancy-enough-for-guests. From “KFC” Keto Fried Chicken to Lemon and Dill Salmon Kabobs; Summer Tuna Avocado Salad to Dragon Tail Jalapeno Poppahs; not to mention Debauchery Chocolate Brownies – there is something for everyone in this cookbook. Stephanie doesn’t leave anyone’s taste buds out. This book does not cast judgment on anyone for the routes they choose to take on their healthier lifestyle journey. “Dirty” does not equate to unhealthy. “Dirty” is in contrast to “clean,” meaning not always all-natural with no additives. “Lazy” does not signify a lack of ambition. It is referring to not detailing every micro, macro, minuscule molecule of every bite. These terms simply indicate it is not the pure, regimented program that strict ketogenic dieters tend to follow. Laska is in no way, shape, or form insinuating that the folks who like the other way are wrong. She believes that there is something that will work for everyone if they work it. As she wisely states, “What’s more dangerous to my health – enduring complications of morbid obesity or drinking Splenda-sweetened coffee?” Stephanie not only includes her expertise from experience, her sparkalicious sense of humor, but also a number of ways to personally connect and plug in to support groups to guide you along your journey. The Dirty, Lazy, Keto Cookbook isn’t just another cookbook, my friends. This is a viable and practical option for a new lease on life.
This book was my first foray into the world of Ketosis. It was a good first cook book to have for this diet, as it allowed food that was "dirty keto" and not necessarily 100% healthy. The review for this book is based on trying 10 recipes, with some of them being repeat cooks with some adjustments. Below is my feedback on all the recipes. Overall review: 3 stars. I rated each recipe 1 to 5 stars.
Booga Chia Cereal: A classic keto breakfast. Many recipes online. Thought this one was okay but it's so easy you didn't really need this book to discover it. 3 stars for a neutral rating.
Weekend Western Omelet: Okay, a western omelet. This also, a neutral rating. It's like having a cookbook for an omelet, which is...what this is. I'm not buying a cookbook to learn how to make an omelet. 3 stars
Bulletproof Coffee: Same review and rating as Chia Cereal
Slow Cooker Taco Bell Soup: This was our first real test of a meal recipe. I LOVE taco bell, and I was hoping this would taste like taco bell. If anything, use some taco bell sauce! It did not. Making it was fun because it was my first time using the instapot, however the taste of this had nothing to do with taco bell. My wife liked it and put some cheese on it, but even so...at least it'd be nice if it had a chili consistency which it didn't. Had like a tomato soup consistency and didn't even taste like tacos at all. 0 stars on this one, and didn't even attempt to repeat or improve this recipe.
Pizza Hut Cheesy Breadsticks: The thing about this diet is that you can't have non-keto bread. Before we knew keto-bread existed, we tried this bad boy out thinking it'll taste like Pizza Hut Cheesy Breadsticks! It did not taste like Pizza Hut at all. So now this makes me question if this lady ever ate at Taco Bell or Pizza Hut! Or if this is just some kind of marketing ploy. 3 stars as at least it wasn't horrible.
Legendary Fathead Pizza Crust: OMG BEST THING IN THIS COOKBOOK! First keto pizza that is a repeat purchase. We've tried MANY keto crust pizzas and this by far is the best one. The recipe is good, but can also be improved. I used a combination of this recipe and the recipe from youtube Keto guy Joe Duff. 5 stars.
Instant Protein Pizza Crust: This book has 4 pizza crusts to try. The thing about keto pizza crusts is that they all don't work for everybody. This one definitely didn't work for me. The crust was made out of chicken, and if you've ever had like ground up already cooked chicken breast, and then baked it into a crust, it's pretty nasty. A for effort but definitely not for me and will never do this one ever again. 0 stars.
Slow Your Roll Pizza Crust: This was our first cauliflower crust. We aren't big fan of cauliflowers so had very very low expectations of this one since it was our last pizza crust from the book to try. It actually turned out to be pretty good, but it was the most complicated of them all to do. 5 stars
Fast Two-Step Pizza: Basically an egg-pizza. Egg isn't supposed to be fluffy. More so kinda crispy. It's just toasted in the oven a lot. Add some sauce and cheese and pepperoni on top, and voila. 3 stars.
Pistachio Fluffer Nutter: First and only dessert I've tried from this book. It's good and VERY SWEET. I made it again with another flavor (white chocolate), but pistachio works best. 5 stars.
Not a whole lot I can say about this cookbook. It is filled with Keto diet recipes that not only the lazy cook, but those of us who don't understand the whole Keto thing can make. If your version of the keto diet includes a Diet Coke, low-carb beer, or the occasional chocolate-covered protein bar, The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO Cookbook is your roadmap for results. Unfortunately for me, I suppose, Diet Coke, Low-carb beer (Something I didn't even know existed) and chocolate-covered protein bars is not what I would normally consume. The meals looked ok, easy to make, and for the most part, were semi-homemade, and not expensive or any more of a fad than the Keto diet itself. For me, I think this is a fad I can skip. All I can say is it is what it claims to be; a Keto cookbook for those too lazy to find out how Keto works. I received this Arc from Adams Media and @Netgalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion
The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO Cookbook by Stephanie Laska; William Laska. I must admit that I have been curious about the Keto diet but what I learned before this book, I didn't think I could make it work. But reading this author's story spoke to me on my level. The write states that they had been around 300 pounds and was able to loose the weight using the Keto diet by working it to something they can easily do. It sets us up to learn about Keto and even how to calculate net Carbs on the Dirty Lazy Keto plan. It gave in site to foods to avoid. Even gives you the grocery list you will need...which I always would like to have had. I need to be pointed in the right direction and this helps greatly. This book gives us the secrets the author had for successful weight loss. Then we get to the recipes which are great. Really loved this book.
Not all the recipes are 30-minute ones, of course, but I loved the variety and how many you prepare in a slow cooker and how many replacements she has for when you’re pining for some high-carb comfort food or snack. Thank you, Stephanie — may I call you Stephanie? — for knowing that we’re so much like you: unable to fit in the rigid keto box. This cookbook is a gem, and so are you!
I found this book made it really easy to understand Keto unlike all of the reading I had been doing online. The information is clear, concise, and easy to imagine that it would be doable. Much easier to connect to with the author's story throughout. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet but there are many that I'm anxious to try like Hangover bacon wrapped pickles, Starbuck's egg bites, McDonald's cheeseburger soup and broccoli cheese soup. Worth reading if you're thinking about going the keto route.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVE this cookbook and have made so many recipes from this cookbook. I love the way Stephanie Laska talks when she refers to about things like the “Keto Police”. Her Purple Eggplant Lasagna is wonderful as is the Broc Omama Cheese Soup - except I used cauliflower because I had that on hand. The Little Italy Baked Lasagna was exceptional. I look forward to making more recipes from this incredibly fun book!
Always a delight to find a cookbook where you want to try all the recipes. Now that I cook more often, it is great that this is an everyday sort of cookbook with easy to source ingredients. The carb count seems reasonable, which is very important for me as someone on low carb for therapeutic reasons.
Not all the recipes feature a photograph of the final product which is OK with me. The photographs that are available are colorful and beautiful.
Entertaining and down-to-earth. I think my favorite part was when she said that even if it made her the Jerry Springer of keto, she’s still going to say that you don’t lose weight any faster buying grass fed beef! Lol. I don’t think I could ever go keto, dirty and lazy or not. But if I did, I would definitely use this cookbook. I liked some of the ideas for snacks and preparing vegetables. If you object to dairy or fake sugar, give it a pass.
Pretty good. There are some interesting recipes in it, and I've made a few. I like her view of eating mostly low-carb vegetables with some fat and protein and not having to stick with strict Keto rules. You could probably get most of these recipes or similar versions online, but I enjoyed her irreverent writing because Keto people sometimes are way too serious.
I related so much to this author and her diet issues. I felt like I was reading my own words and I loved her humor and honesty. Seeing recipes like Chia cereal, OG salad and the Big Mac salad let me know this could a lifestyle change I can definitely get on board with. I have so many recipes booked marked and I carry the cookbook around with me everywhere. It’s my food bible.
I commend Ms Laska's honesty. It's rather refreshing. This book feels more like having a conversation with a friend than being told what to do by a stern schoolmarm. If I were ever to consider keto, I'd do it this way -- counting carbs. I took off a star because there were very few photos of completed dishes, but other than that, it was a rather interesting read.
Too much cauliflower and zucchini imo. In nearly every recipe. Would have appreciated a bit more insight into the author's weight loss journey and how she eats day to day with these recipes. I did like the tips with each recipe for changing them up.
Easy to follow and hopefully easy to incorporate into every day eating plan. Can't wait to get started. The problem is... Which recipe will I pick to get started?
This is the beginning of my new lifestyle. It makes so much sense, and is a great starting point. I so relate to her observations and insights, and love the recipes. If you are ready make a change, and are interested in Keto, get this book today.
Good, simple, easy recipes. Some you so simple I wondered why the were included, but I guess if you are new to cooking? There are definitely a handful I will be trying in the coming months though and I suspect some will make it into a regular rotation.
