Faerie-born Jack Flash and her human-born brother, Larry, run a detective agency in New York City specializing in crimes committed in the hazy boundary between the human and faerie realms. They never expected to receive a letter from an ancient magus of the Old World, but Echos, caretaker of dragons, has a task for them. An all-new The Ancient Magus' Bride spin-off series!
I think they could draw Larry more adorable than he already is imo but I get wanting him to feel otherworldly. That's barely a comment about the book itself I guess though.
The references to Sara Paretsky and Sue Grafton helped to win me over to this very fun spin-off of a series I only sort-of like. (Because if forced to choose, I'll take The Girl from the Other Side over Ancient Magus' Bride every single time.)
A unique P.I spin off in the Ancient Magus Bride universe. This definitely has a different feel then amb but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm curious about future volumes.
Jack Flash (no that is not her real name) and her human-born brother Larry (who is part wolf now) take on various cases and the occasional good deed as they live in New York. After all the Jack Flash Detective Agency moves like lightning. In this volume we see a young man is cursed with the ability to see through glamours and resist mind altering charms, a quick handling of a random thug, and the case that takes up most of the volume (and leads into the next volume) the case of a missing dragon egg. All in all this series is not bad but some of the art is a little confusing at times and kind of ugly at others throwing me off but then there are moments where the art was fantastic as well.
Honestly I didn't even realize Kore Yamazaki was only supervising the script until I got the book but in the end it is alright for the start of a new series. Only time will tell if this series will be polished as more volumes come out but I doubt it will ever be quite as good as the original series it branches from.
The author does really well at emulating big, American cities such as New York or Manhattan, but that might be exactly a part of why I don't care for it very much. This is very much a New Yorker style manga with all the characters, scenery, plot devices, and even vibe to fit it. Right now, I’m not the hugest fan of atmospheres like that in real life, let alone fictionally.
Overall, this manga does well at showing what a fun little play box the world of the Ancient Magus’ Bride provides, being the second official spin-off series now. The characters are fun but lack depth, the same goes for the story itself. Everything about it very much touches surface level, which is fine, it’s simply not something I’m used to. This really is fun and it’s very light reading, so you can honestly read it anywhere (perhaps on a train in NYC?). I do recommend it if you’re looking for a fresh, modern, and American spin on the Ancient Magus’ Bride (minus the romantic angle).
I expected this story to read more like the original series, Ancient Magus Bride, and I could not be more pleased with how exactly not like the original it was! The story felt fresh and new, even with the same fantasy world woven through it. Lindel made an appearance to help get the story started, and there was a brief mention of Elias and Chise on the offhand and those were literally the only things that really made you realize they were from the same universe. I felt that the tie-ins were just enough to connect it all, but the story stands well enough on its own. Right away, we were thrown into the world and pulled along by our detective team. I still love the changeling angle and how Jack works with it. The artwork is fantastic, the story is interesting, and I am absolutely going to grab the next volume the next time I stop at the bookstore.
Such beautiful artwork! And an engaging story as well! We meet Jack Flash, a Fae raised by a human family and her changeling brother, Larry. Jack is a detective who hunts down bad guys, explores New York, and follows clues to locate a missing dragon egg. In the middle of the book, we get the back story of Jack and Larry. I liked the detective element and the character artwork. However, there were frequent panels with symbols on the side (I assume Japanese) as well as swirls of black and white. Also, the dialogue and story were in different fonts and different sizes, I assume to signal different information or speech but at times it was all a bit confusing. I like Jack and look forward to reading more about her.
I loved how Jack is drawn! She’s portrayed as a tough, stylish, independent lady. Which was interesting because when I read this story in The ancient Magus Bride: The golden Yarn, that’s not how I pictured her. The golden yarn book is made up of short stories and the last one in the book is the written story version of this manga book. It was quite funny seeing how the author drew the scenes and how they were very different to what I imagined reading the book. Overall because I knew the story as I was reading it, that took some of the surprise out, so I’ll give it a 4/5. That being said I’m still going to order the next one! Haha!
3.5 stars. A solid first installment for a spin off series. The story could have been a bit better from a structure standpoint, and while the art is lovely it was sometimes a bit difficult to tell precisely what was going on. I look forward to reading future volumes though. A fun film noir styled detective fantasy with a fun leading lady with a flare for the femme fatale as heroine.
Ok I'm definitely continuing this spin off of The Ancient Magus Bride. Very cute but also a lot of action, it was a nice change with all the action pack. So this series is set in the same world as Magus Bride even has some of the original characters come in as a cameo. The two main characters are "siblings " because they were swap at birth. Larry was born human but got swap with Jack from the fairy world then Larry goes back to find her and they teamed up to be investigators of the unhuman sorts that come into the human world trying to raise a muck.
So if you like The Ancient Magus Bride I believe you'll like this series as well 😊
I'm not sure what I think of this one. It's in the same world as Elias and Chise, seen some of the characters mentioned......and I think Chise met Larry and Jack's parents.......but I'm not sure what to think about this series yet. I will read book 2.
I have up to the fourth volume checked out from the library so I will continue at least up until that point but I sadly didn’t care much for the story and some of the art confused me in parts.
I preordered this without realizing that it wasn't actually written by Kore Yamazaki. I just saw it was an off-shot series of the Ancient Magus' Bride series and bought it, and then realized it wasn't and was hesitant. However, I found that my hesitation was unfounded. This story was awesome! It's a grittier version, but New York is a grittier setting. I really like the main character, Jack. She's smart, funny, and puts up with nothing. Larry is really cute, too: more a puppy than a wolf. I'm really looking forward to continuing this series.
I would give this spinoff series a 3.5. It's by no means bad, but if you're desperate for more of the long-awaited original series you might be disappointed by Jack Flash and the Faerie Case Files. Overall the story is fun. I did not find it boring like other reviewers, but I will say that the story has a very different feel than you have come to expect from The Ancient Magus Bride series. The artwork is great and detailed, though at times can be busy. I never found it difficult to know what was going on, but at times the pages can feel a bit cluttered.
I have the first 4 volumes. I got it Used as a set along with the original The Ancient Magus' Bride, as well as its other spin-off Wizard's Blue. I really wanted to like this series. It is interesting, as it differs from the other two (orphan + some ancient magician duo), focusing on a Changeling detective. I do like that the stories are kind of interconnected, with mentioning of and even the entrance of characters from the other series.
So what don't I like about it? The art! It is a GRAPHIC novel after all. It's so busy that sometimes I find it hard to figure out what is going on in the panels.
More of a 3.5 star rating; I like the direction that this series can go to and I’m very intrigued with the setting being in New York instead of overseas. It was nice to see characters from the main Ancient Magus’ Bride storyline either referenced or briefly shown in the manga. My only concern is that the pages themselves seemed too busy and it was a bit difficult to figure out where to focus on panel to panel.
