Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

The art for the older character is a lot cooler, but I’m very slowly starting to warm up to Hachimaru 🤔

Navigating the path of bringing your heroic lead from where they begin to where they need to go can be a struggle. You could use many choices, but many of them are either predictable, formulaic, or plain terrible. Yet, if you look at the core of those options, many share a common creation point or universal truth. One of those truths is: There is nothing more powerful than the hope of the youth. As our hero in Samurai 8 and his new princess prove once more, their power is formidable, and it's only in its early stages.

Warnings: body horror, fantasy violence, suicide, self-harm, death of family

Hachimaru and Daruma manage to save the planet from the large chunk falling into the atmosphere as well as it being a training moment for the former. With his home saved, they, along with Ann, move on to their journey to find the keys. However, Daruma feels he needs more training, and during a supply run when he learns of a samurai competition with a key holder as the boss, they turn their sights there. They also meet Ryu and Kotsuga, who seem to be, I guess, space ronin? Kotsuga is shifty and Ryu in an amnesiac, the latter being an excellent samurai, so Hachimaru also gets to train with him. The difference in skill is obvious when Hachimaru has to do a risky move to even land a hit on him. And on the planet for the competition itself awaits a battle royale for the samurai.

One thing I especially liked is the focus on Ann - we firstly get to see what princesses do for the samurai besides being something to be protected, and their powers. Another princess-samurai pair appears, and the holes in Hachimaru's battle sense come to light. Secondly, we also get Ann's backstory - about her older brother and how she sees him in Hachimaru. (Also, it incidentally adds a piece of world building in that samurai-princess pairs need not necessarily be romantic? so why are the princesses training at their princess school all like samurai are boyfriends?). Finally, as far as the artwork is concerned, it is still a chaotic mess when it comes to the many battle scenes in the book. For once, I would like to know what exactly is going on in the scene!

I am going to begrudgingly give this two stars because I believe that some of the action scenes here were actually entertaining, and because I get a sick satisfaction of how stupid this series is. Like, the main character proves that his greatest strength is that he is a PRO GAMER who can analyze frame-data in the middle of an IRL fight to defeat his opponents. What the hell is this nonsense. This is like Kirito leaving Sword Art Online and going on to dominate at the intergalactic fencing Olympics. It's so stupid.

Hachimaru is finally growing into a strong samurai with the support of Ann and his Key holder! Love how badass Ryu is and his mysterious backstory!

This battle royal feels a little rushed but the final dual/rematch between Hachimaru and Ryu was good, could have been played out longer but thats okay

If you can get through the confusing info dumps, then you will love this samurai scifi series. The only other gripe, I have time to time. Is the artwork can get strange, but I still enjoyed it.

Meinung

Samurai and his Princess

This volume was a very good setup. It brought to us new characters but also developed both Hachimaru and his Princess Ann. Hachimaru learning not just how to fight as a Samurai but the importance of the bond Samurai share with their Princess and how to protect them. We also see why Ann has such strong feelimgs for and with Hachimaru. The 2 new comapnions shake things up in rather hilarious ways but are also mysterious themselves. This is an incredibly good series.

Ata has been pushed back and it's time for Hachimaru to get some much needed training and to begin his search for his fellow six keys for Pandora's Box (while trying to avoid the his seven octuplet brothers who want him dead).

This volume introduces a couple of new characters that are likely to be Hachimaru's allies and kinda glosses over a lot of action to focus on Ann's backstory. Warning: Tissues may be needed.

This series has 5 volumes.
