The third book in the Highland, Georgia romantic comedy series from Laura Trentham, A Highlander is Coming to Town, full of love, laughs...and highlanders!
You better watch out. . .

Driven by duty, Holt has always followed the path expected of him. But lately, he’s been questioning what he wants and where he belongs. Will assuming the responsibility of the Pierson farm make him happy or is there something―or someone―else out in the wider world calling to him?
To Claire Smythe, the Scottish lead singer of a touring band, Highland, Georgia, is the perfect place to hide . . .until a very handsome and deeply curious Holt begins to ask all the questions Claire doesn’t want to answer. As Holt draws Claire out from under and into the fabric of small-town life, can Claire put the past behind her and embrace the unexpected gifts of the season―including the new and lasting love?

A Highlander is Coming to Town by Laura Trentham is a 2020 St. Martin’s Press publication.
Slightly offbeat, small town Christmas romance-
After quitting her gig as the singer in a rock band, Claire is basically hiding out in Highland, Georgia, taking care of Ms. Meadows, an elderly woman who requires a little assistance and company.
Why is Claire hiding out? She has a few heavy decisions she will soon have to face regarding her future, and she’s taking some time to come to terms with the burdens of unavoidable responsibility that awaits her once the holidays are over and she must return home to Scotland.
The last thing on her mind is romance… until a sexy guy named Holt occasions to come to her rescue when her grocery bag breaks and when she has trouble with her bike. Despite his good looks, Ms. Meadows warns Claire this guy is trouble with a capital T!!
I added this book because it had a holiday theme, not realizing it was a part of a series. For the record, the book is easily read as a stand-alone, so don’t let that deter you.
The characterizations are what makes this a fun and lively story. Highland is apparently a unique place to live, and it’s no wonder Claire felt drawn to it and had no desire to leave. The romance is cute, with only a bit of low- level angst.
My one complaint is that it seems there is a trend among holiday centered contemporary romance novels at the moment, which is to ignore the holiday elements until the last few chapters of the book. In the past, some authors have gone too far in the other direction, I will admit, but if we are going to market a book as holiday romance, perhaps more of balance is called for.
Nevertheless, the Christmas spirit does shine through in the end, adding a dash of magic to the story.
Overall, this is a lovely romance, with a bit of spice, and a touch of holiday cheer!
Highland, Georgia series book 3. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a stand-alone romance. Previous book primary characters do make cameo appearances.
Claire took a caretaker job in Highland, GA after quitting her singing lead in the Scottish band. Holt helps Claire with a flat bicycle tire and the two find their attraction growing the more time they spend together.
An engaging romance rich with phrases like “The oblivion of pleasure was nigh.“ Smart and satisfying. I loved the caring you’ll read about.
Excerpt “Whatcha doing?” The whispered question came with a puff of breath along her cheek. She let out a squeal, which drew everyone’s eyes toward her. Exactly the sort of attention she tried to avoid. Holt Pierson was hunched behind her, his chin nearly on her shoulder. Her hood had hidden her from over-curious, prying eyes, but also masked his approach. “You scared the dickens out of me. What are you doing in a library?” [...] “I can read. And write, when I put my mind to it. Shocking, I know.” He winked. The tease in his voice was like a favorite shirt he wore with ease. Did the man ever get defensive or ruffled? “That was badly done of me. Pardon,” she said stiffly. “I shouldn’t have assumed just because you look like you do, you don’t possess a decent number of brain cells.” His eyebrows bounced up and his smile took on a wicked crook. He leaned down, and she caught the scent of fresh laundry and shaving cream. The slash of tanned skin between his collar and his jaw beckoned her closer. What would his skin feel like against her lips? “A decent number of brain cells? You’re making me blush,” he said. “But I’m more interested in what I look like in your eyes. Do tell.” He looked like a delicious decadent treat she wanted to devour.” Excerpt from A Highlander is Coming to Town by Laura Trentham.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.
I haven't read the first two books in the series by Laura Trentham, but I think it works as a stand-alone. There are MCs from past books that are woven into this story, but the focus on the book is mainly on Holt and Claire. Which, to be honest, may not have been a good thing...
The story wasn't a bad one, but the chemistry just fell really flat. It all seemed so forced. Claire was extra angsty and hard for me to warm up to, and Holt seemed really focused on her without an apparent reason or any indication that Claire was that into him. I just never connected to the plot or main characters.
With thousands of romance books under my belt, it takes a good deal to impress me. Unfortunately, A Highlander is Coming to Town wasn't it.
Sweet and romantic with a touch of heat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you are in the mood for a light-hearted, easy contemporary romance with a touch of flair, this is the one to choose. While this is a third in a series book, it can definitely be read as a stand alone.
Holt really made this story. He is kind and caring without being overwhelming or over bearing. He takes everything in stride and perfectly balances the gruff, standoffish feelings you get from Claire.
Claire wants to hide and not call attention to herself, but the way she goes about it, certainly calls attention to herself too. But once she starts opening up, her sly wit and playful side comes out as well as her passion for Holt.
The author blends a lovely balance between the nervous Claire and the steadfast Holt. With an easy to read style, beautiful character development, along with plenty of spice and heat, the passion flows between the pages.

Holt Pierson, the sexy, neighbor farmer of Izzy's, has been a little down in the dumps lately. He was half in love with Izzy before Alistair scooped her up and his parents have retired to travel the US in an RV leaving him solely responsible for the farm. On a stormy night he picks up a stranded woman, and get a lot more than he expected. I had such high hopes for this book and it just didn't live up to them. What we got was page after page of a whiny heroine and Holt, as the hero, was a real dud.
Holt Pierson is facing Christmas alone. He has sole control over the family farm now that his parents are semi-retired and traveling. And, he is just plain lonely. That is until he comes across Claire Smythe. Holt knows that Claire has secrets, but he is intrigued by the sexy former lead singer, turned caregiver for his elderly neighbor.
Claire Smythe, has chosen Highland, GA to step off the path she has been on as lead singer for a Scottish traveling musical group and make some decisions about her future. She doesn't want any interaction with anyone, but that is just not possible in a small town. Especially when she has a accident and Holt comes to her rescue. It is hard to resist the handsome, ripped farmer, but she knows that nothing can come to a relationship with him.
Holt is an open book and Claire has so many secrets it's difficult to see how they could ever get together. But, Holt is determined and Claire just doesn't have a prayer.
Christmas comes early in Laura Trentham’s latest, A Highlander is Coming to Town. A light hearted romance set in Highland, Georgia is the third in a series but works as a stand alone. Claire is our heroine, a prickly, private, Scottish young women hiding out after leaving her band as the lead singer. The juxtaposition between her and our hero Holt, Georgia boy through and through who falls for Claire unapologetically, is striking. Holt works to get closer to Claire, Claire pushes back against getting close to anyone, all set against the backdrop of the small town, and Christmas approaching. The supporting cast was particularly lovely, almost to the point I was invested in them more then the main characters. This has a different feeling then Laura Trentham’s previous books, several of which I’ve loved. I enjoyed this holiday romance. I highly recommend her Cottonbloom Series. Leave the Light on is my favorite. Many thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced reader copy and the opportunity to review this book. All opinions are my own.
This is a light romantic comedy about two people who couldn't be more different. Holt is kind, caring and always does what is expected of him whether he wanted to or not. Claire was hiding out in Highland so she could keep a secret. She was so worried about her secret coming out that she wouldn't let anybody get to know her, making her a hard person to like. As Holt and Claire got to know each other better, Holt knew Claire was hiding something, and he was determined to find out what it was. It took some time, but he finally got the truth out of her. She thought he would run away when he found out but nope.
I enjoyed this story and loved the ending. I recommend it to romantic suspense fans.
I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
An actual Scottish person comes to Highland, Georgia, to run from her family responsibilities (so mysterious.) She meets a man who is the arch enemy (kinda) of the woman she works with and they have instant chemistry.
I try to find a few holiday romances to recommend every year but this one has too many inconsistencies and plot holes. The big secret ends up as no big deal and some very dramatic things that happen come out of nowhere and also aren't followed up on.... it just doesn't work. It kind of felt like the author pulled elements out of a hat and tried to make them into a novel.
I had a copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my overly honest opinion. The book comes out September 29. I'm pretty sure Highland is based on a small town in NC....
A fun, light, romantic comedy, Laura Trentham’s A HIGHLANDER IS COMING TO TOWN takes the holiday theme, a small town with quirky residents and two people, seemingly opposites and stirs up a delightful and quick read to cozy up with.
Holt is kind, caring and one of those people who does what is expected of them and sometimes it may not mesh with what HE wants to do. Claire is the lead singer in a Scottish band who is hiding out in Highland, holding on tight to many, many secrets. Too bad Holt is determined to discover the prickly woman’s secrets and won’t let up. Layer by layer he breaks her down and once again, Cupid saves the day, because the heart wants what the heart wants.
Claire was a tough character to like at first while Holt had me from page one. As the story unfolds, I found myself smiling more and more, which made this a great escape for a couple of hours!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from St. Martin's Paperbacks! This is my honest and voluntary review.

This has been a fun series to read and I enjoy the ties between Scotland and this town in Georgia.
If you delve into this series, make sure to start with the first book since the characters continue from book to book and there is a little bit of an introduction into the various characters. I haven't read the second book (this is book 3) and I feel like I missed something regarding Claire and her decision to leave the band she was singing with and hide out in Highland. There are some mentions of running from her family and the obligation, but I don't know what caused her to leave the band.
I enjoyed watching the interaction between Claire and Holt. They definitely have some sizzling chemistry, but Claire's walls hold him back from having a serious relationship. Claire's secret is holding her back from a full relationship with him or anyone else. It is a shame that she feels she has to hide away from those in town and dress in clothing that disguises who she is. But time helps her realize what she wants out of life.
I think one character that steals the book is Mrs. Meadows that Claire lives with and is assisting with various tasks around her house. She is a feisty woman that has endured a lot in her life and we get a glimpse of those tragedies. She isn't afraid to stand up to Holt in the beginning for the wrongs his family had done to her in the past. Thankfully, she is a smart woman and moves past those.
If you are looking for an escape this might be a good choice to pick up. We give this book 4 paws up.
Laura Trentham has me totally invested in this wonderful series. I am loving the our Scots and everything they bring to this story. Holt and Claire’s story was a little different from the first two but it was wonderful all the same.
I loved how Ms. Trentham let us into both Claire and Holt’s life. She made us understand the difference between the two and how those differences can be overcome with a little bit of love and a whole lot of understanding. I adored the characters that surrounded both of them and how much they helped shape the people that they are. The story-line was packed. From magical moments to heart-felt moments, you couldn’t help but fall in love with the characters and the meaning behind the story.
Visiting with past characters was just an added bonus. Meeting new ones was even better; giving hope that there will be more to this series. I loved how she brought everyone and everything together in the end. It gave you hope that people could overcome the past, accept the present and look forward to the future.
This was such a pleasant story. As a Georgia girl who has been to Highland I was so excited to dive in.
I am.a sucker for a second chance story. Claire going out for what she wanted, even though she was scared was such a great storyline. I adored Claire.
Holt was dreamy and the chemistry he had with Claire was off the charts. I love that this qualifies as a "holiday book" but really I would encourage you to devour it anywhere.
Thank you St Martin's Press and Netgalley for the advanced galley for my honest opinion.
To be clear, this is a two star that aligns with GR's ratings, meaning that this book is okay. In other words, it was fine, bland, meh. There's nothing wrong with it, aside from the comical lack of knowledge of American culture by the Scottish heroine (she's seriously never heard of American football? For someone who has traveled a lot and undoubtedly watched American pop culture, this is ridiculous imo, and felt like an attempt by an American author to sell the heroine as Scottish). The romance is sweet, and I do like how kind and supportive Holt is. There is absolutely no male machismo from this one, which is always nice. And he's a farmer, and not a particularly well-off one. Mostly, everything felt a bit surface level.
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Very good book. I enjoyed my return trip to Highland, Georgia, and the chance to see Holt get his happy ever after. I felt bad for him in the first book, A Highlander Walks into a Bar, when he lost Izzy to Alasdair. In that book, and the following one, A Highlander in a Pickup, he exhibits some restlessness, wondering if there is more to life. At the beginning of this story, Holt runs the family farm on his own while his parents travel the country in an RV. On a trip into town, Holt meets the prickly Claire when he rescues her groceries from a broken bag. A short time later, he comes to the rescue again when her bike has a flat. He is intrigued by the contrasts he sees in her - a bit of mystery, a crusty attitude, and hints of fun and flirtation.
Claire made her first appearance in the last book as the singer for the band The Scunners at the Highland Games. She traveled with them for several years but parted ways at the end of the games. Since then, she has worked as a caregiver for an elderly lady, Ms. Meadows. In the few months that Claire has been there, she has done her best to avoid spending much time in town. She has a pretty big secret, and she doesn't want to take a chance on revealing it. Claire has some big decisions to make about her future before going home to Scotland after Christmas. The last thing she needs is to get involved with a good-looking farmer.
I enjoyed seeing the relationship develop between Claire and Holt. They don't seem like much of a match at first. Claire is aloof, sometimes rude, but hides a good heart. Holt is handsome, charming, and seemingly unflappable. From the moment he met her, Holt was determined to get to know Claire better. In their first encounters, he is intrigued by the fun side that pokes through her prickly crust. He takes every opportunity to spend time with her until he breaks down her walls entirely. Claire doesn't know quite what to make of Holt at first. No matter how rude she is to him, it just rolls off his back. It isn't long before she enjoys his company.
The sparks of attraction that were there from the start soon burst into flame. The more time they spend together, the closer they get. It is soon apparent that both of them have been lonely and that being together makes a big difference in their lives. But Claire has been clear from the beginning that she has to go back to Scotland, which is warring with her growing feelings for Holt. An unexpected arrival in Highland accelerates decision time for Claire. I enjoyed this part so much because the growth in confidence and maturity that Claire has experienced surfaces in a very satisfying way. I wasn't surprised by her decision and loved how easy it was for her to do. I loved the follow-on of her visit to Holt and the happiness that resulted. The epilogue was excellent, with a few more surprises and a great deal of fun.
I love the small town of Highland. It was heartwarming to see how Claire was eased into the fabric of the town's life. She never stood a chance of staying aloof once she started hanging out with Holt. I had to laugh at her encounter with Anna in the drugstore, which was an unusual way to begin a friendship. I liked how Iain and the band helped Claire get back into her music. But my favorite resident was Ms. Meadows. Under that crusty exterior was a heart of gold, and I loved that she took care of Claire just as much as Claire did of her. I had to laugh at her protectiveness when Holt first showed up, and how his charm even worked on her. There were some wonderfully heartwarming scenes between Ms. Meadows and Claire.
A Highlander is Coming to Town A Highland by Laura Trentham is book Three in the Highland, Georgia Series. This is the story of Claire Smythe and Holt Pierson. I have read the previous book but felt this can be a standalone book. Claire was a lead singer in a Scottish Band but has stepped away from that to become a caretaker in Highland Georgia. This will allow her down time and to get herself back on track. Holt is left to care for the family farm and is at a crossroads in his life of continuing or looking for something or someone more. This is when a chance meeting happens between Clair and Holt opening them up to something new. Enjoyed this easy read book and will be looking for more books from this author.
I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Move over, Santa. This year, a man in a kilt is coming to town...
Former lead singer for the Scottish rock band, the Scunners, Claire is hiding out in Highland, Georgia, while sorting out some personal issues. She dreads her inevitable return to Scotland, where she must face her distant parents and determine--once and for all--if she is ready and willing to lead the life they want for her. In the meantime, she's staying as the live-in caretaker for Ms. Meadows, an elderly widow with a lot of spunk. She doesn't have the time or inclination to get involved with anyone, let alone Holt Pierson. Especially Holt Pierson, because Ms. Meadows can't stand him.
All around nice guy and Highland's golden boy (and recent Laird of the Games at the Highlands Scottish Fair) Holt Pierson finds Ms. Meadows' less-than-friendly views on him to be fair. After all, his father had been harassing the old woman about buying her property since Holt was small. And he hasn't exactly been that good of a neighbor to her, especially when she needs it the most. But he's determined to change that. And, no, not just because she now has a really pretty girl living with her. Of course not. He's not interested in Claire. Except, he really, really is...
Can Holt and Claire get a Christmas miracle? And will the first annual Highland Burns Festival be a success? And what's wrong with Anna Maitland?
A fantastic conclusion to the Highland trilogy, "A Highlander is Coming to Town" is wonderfully Christmassy and festive despite the warm weather that Highland can't escape (living in Georgia's neighboring state, South Carolina, I feel ya...). This is a beautiful final trip to Highland, where we get to see a whole new Scottish festival, see familiar faces again, and catch up on all the latest gossip of the small town. And, more importantly, we finally get to see Holt in a leading role, and getting all the romance he deserves! Plus, Scottish accents and kilts. What's not to love? (There's a particular chapter that is near and dear to my heart, featuring Holt and Iain attempting--and failing--to cook. It is the best thing I have ever read.)
Another romantic comedy hit my queue! I already read the first two books in this series, A Highlander Walks Into a Bar and A Highlander in a Pickup, so I knew I was in for a treat with this third book in the Highland, Georgia series. In this addition to the series, Holt Pierson is pretty much a Scrooge. Not happy about the holiday in the least, as well as taking on sudden responsibilities is not his idea of fun.
Meanwhile, Claire Smythe is taking a break from her singing career to hide out in Highland, Georgia. In the first two books, we had sexy Scottish men in kilts. In this book, we have a beautiful and vivacious singer who is about to turn the life of one of Georgia's own upside down, Holt Pierson.
Holt and Claire could not be more different. Claire starts off as shy and reserved, but she soon becomes brash and playful. Meanwhile, Holt is gruff and stern, although loving and caring for the people in his life. But, as the saying goes, opposites attract, and that couldn't be more true for these two. Sparks fly, ignite and turn into a full flame.
All the while, Claire and Holt do indeed make the perfect couple, and I enjoyed how this book was written so that we, as readers, could see the groundwork of a happily ever after come to these wonderful and deserving people.
Before I read the three books in this series, Laura Trentham was a new name for me. I loved reading her books and enjoyed her writing style, the characters, conflicts and conclusions of each book. I do hope there is more in this series. If not, I look forward to perusing her backlist so that I can continue to be entertained by her.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
While the world is dealing with Covid19, this book was a nice escape for me. It has a great plot that does not have the normal conflict between the main male and female characters (Holt and Claire). The issue between them is that a major life decision needs to be made that will either keep them close in location or bring them apart.
I enjoyed the interaction of Holt and Claire. Both of them are really good people and I cared about them. I adore stories with a character of the older population and this book has Ms. Meadows. She is crusty on the outside and has a heart of gold lying beneath.
This is the third book in the Highland, Georgia series but it can definitely be read independently. I read the first book in the series and missed the second, so now I need to backtrack and catch up.
I want to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for giving me the pleasure in reading the Advance Reading Copy of this book. My review is my own opinion not influenced by receiving the ARC.
I was provided an ARC by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I got a request to read this by the publisher, I was a little dubious because of the cover. But I decided not to judge a book by its cover and give this a chance. After all, I was in the mood for an easy and fun romance. Or was I? Sometimes I wonder if I can still read straight romance novels. Some of them just seem so basic... It's always the same format. Or it just feels like it, I don't know. Admittedly, I've read loads and loads of romance novels and it's getting harder and harder to satisfy me now. But I really didn't click with this one. A lot of it felt rushed and I had a little bit of trouble connecting with the characters. I quickly found out, I just didn't care. About any of it. All in all, it was okay. The end felt like it happened fast but mostly, this was fine. Shit, that sounds mean. I'm sorry. I guess this just isn't for me anymore.
I was invited to view this ARC through NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it A "Highlander is Coming to Town", by Laura Trentham (St. Martin’s Press), features a great hero, a regular guy who, besides being the handsome, sexy guy we expect, is also a good man, unashamedly pining for the heroine. Holt is very well written, a compelling character who makes mistakes but has a refreshing honesty about them and life in general. The way he falls head over heels for Claire is sweet and endearing. He’s just an affectionate, funny, very down-to-earth person, which makes him a very likable and relatable character. Claire is also an interesting character, who grows and changes throughout the story; she’s dealing with a lot of baggage, but her issues really didn’t grab my interest. I liked the way their relationship progressed, the small town dynamics and the secondary characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Christmassy romance! It’s warm-hearted and funny, with wonderful characters. The story is also poignant, as the main character Claire hides her true self, looking for her safe place to land. I love romance novels in which the couple have to break down barriers and allow themselves to be vulnerable and open to love.
Claire Smith is the caregiver for an elderly lady in Highland. She was the lead singer in a Scottish band but is hiding out in Highland, Georgia until she is forced to make some decisions about her future, and it's coming soon. Holt Pierson is taking care of the family farm and meets Claire who at the moment is his next door neighbor. Holt is the cheerful antidote to Claire's feeling of dread and worry for her coming life decisions. Claire starts to make some friends in town and realizes her client, retired teacher, Ms Meadows is a becoming a good friend as well. A cheerful Christmas story!
A Highlander is Coming to Town by Laura Trentham A Highland Georgia Novel #3
Heartwarming holiday stories at this time of year might be a dime a dozen but some are that little bit extra and this is one of them. This story has all that a small-town romance should include with friendships old and new, romance for more than one, relationships to create and some to fix, and troubles to overcome before a HEA can occur.
What I liked: * Clair: dealing with a big decision that will determine her future. Will she be able to find her way to the HEA she deserves or will duty and family stand in thew ay * Holt: a wonderful man that is just what Clair needs but will he be able to woo and win her or…perhaps not * Ms. Meadows: an older woman that Clair is living with and caring for. She is a delightful woman and just the balancing force Clair needed at this point in her life * The smiles and chuckles that occurred from time to time while reading * Catching up with Iain and Annie – good people and so deserving of one another * The community, location and their Scots leanings * The holiday parts of the story * The issues facing Clair and how she handled them * The relationship between Clair and Ms. Meadows * The idea of family and how it plays a part in our development * So much…can’t list all of them here
What I didn’t like: * The way Clair was raised
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
A Highlander is Coming to Town is another enjoyable story in Laura Trentham's Highland, Georgia romantic comedy series. I've been looking forward to learning more about Holt and am delighted that he turned out to be as endearing, kind, steadfast, and genuinely nice as I had hoped he would be. Claire, on the other hand, is new to Highland. She's prickly, secretive, and a fish out of water. Highland may pride itself on its Scottish roots but northern Georgia is a far cry from Claire's home in Scotland.
Claire has never known unconditional love, never fully trusted another person, never known anyone to perform a kindness without expecting something in return (thanks to her dysfunctional family). Small wonder she regards Southern hospitality with skepticism. I enjoyed watching her slowly lower those protective walls she has built around herself as she gets to know Ms. Meadows (the elderly woman she works for), Holt, and others in the small community. I also enjoyed watching her shake up Holt and his rather complacent life. Holt grounds her, giving her a safe place to land while Claire opens his eyes to possibilities he hadn't considered.
The pace of this book is slow and easy, with minimal angst, a bit of steam, a lively group of townspeople, and a happily ever after I can believe in. Fans of the series will enjoy new events in Anna's and Iain's relationship (book 2 - A Highlander in a Pickup) while readers new to Highland, Georgia should be able to jump in with A Highlander is Coming to Town.
Having not read a book by this author before, I was pleasantly surprised with this story. Even though this is book 3 in her Highland, Georgia Series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. It is a light-hearted, contemporary romance that I found easy to read. It had a good, strong storyline and characters that endeared themselves to you.
Claire Smythe is the former lead singer of a Scottish band, who is hiding out in Highland, trying to bury all the secrets that she holds. An accidental meeting with Holt Pierson is about to change everything for her. Holt is a caring man, looking after others more than himself. He's determined to find out the secrets Claire holds. Preparing to face Christmas alone, Holt is focused on finding out everything about Claire. He wants to break down all of the walls she has built up around herself. Even though their personalities are completely different, this story shows that opposites can attract.
Even though I did enjoy this story, it did tend to drag in a few places. it took me a while to warm up to Claire, her secrets weren't really the major ones I was expecting. Whereas Holt, I loved him from the moment he was introduced.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read, and has me looking forward to Christmas.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley Read and Reviewed for Reading Is Our Satisfaction
An absolutely fun read that every Christmas romance loving fan will surely enjoy! Fans of cinnamon roll heroes will ALSO love this story despite wanting to bean the heroine in the head a time or two. LOL
I have enjoyed the previous stories in this Highland, Georgia series, and I was really looking forward to this Christmas time jaunt back to the town and it's citizens.
Whilst I liked it, I wasn't as enamoured with it as I was the first two books.
And I think for the most part, the problem for me was Claire. I liked her for the most part, but I did get sick of her "poor little rich girl" attitude for so much of the story. I got it, I know why she hid who she was from people. I am sure I would too to some extent.
But ugh it ended up grating on me. This could just be me though. I wanted to shake some sense into her at times.
Holt was just all swoon in a kilt. Get out of the way Claire, I will take him off your hands!
I loved seeing more of the couples from the previous books, I loved seeing their relationships growing, I loved the banter between everyone.
So whilst this one fell a little flat for me, I hope we get more visits to Highland in the future.
Having read the previous books in this series, I loved this heart-warming, witty, and romantic Highland, GA story. Holt is longing for his someone special, especially since he has been left on his own for Christmas. Seeing Claire struggling with her antiquated bicycle, he steps in to help but gets a frosty reception. All Holt's senses go on alert as Claire alternates between cowering from him and avoiding him. With patience, a sense of humour, and good old Southern common sense, he slowly wins Claire over. Claire is hiding from her responsibilities and the expectations that are being placed on her. For the first time in her life, she feels as though she belongs. Her employer, Ms Meadows, is a crusty old lady, but she has graduated to giving Claire slim praise and is slowly thawing towards her. Claire finds in the old lady a sense of belonging that is missing when with her own family. Characters from previous books in this series appear in this one too, bringing a smile to one's face and making the reader feel part of the small town, nevertheless, it is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. This novel has all the drama one would expect from Ms Trentham, together with humour and a warm-hearted romance. The book is well written and emotive and made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. I received a copy of this delightful book as a gift from NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Since his parents left to travel the country, Holt Pierson has been left to manage the family farm, his eventual inheritance, on his own. He’s always been content with following the expected path, but lately he’s been inescapably lonely with no one to share his life with.
Having just left her band, Claire Smythe has decided Highland, Georgia, is the perfect place to disappear. She needs time to figure things out and between the small town and her assumed name, she should be safe from her family finding her. But when Claire meets Holt, she finds herself wanting to answer his curious questions honestly. As Holt brings Claire out of her shell, she begins to find a place in the small town, but she has a duty of her own to see to and can’t stay in Highland forever, no matter how strong her feelings for Holt have become.
I have enjoyed Holt as a side character in the previous two books in this series and was greatly looking forward to his story. The problem is that this is definitely more Claire’s story than Holt’s. Claire’s poor little rich girl angle and ridiculous hiding and flightiness just got old for me very quickly and made her extremely unlikable for me. I wanted to shake some sense into her, and she didn’t start to grow on me until about the last 10% of the book. Also, the intimate scenes here were very vague and glossed over, and since that physical connection was such a key element in the development of the relationship between Claire and Holt, I feel like that short-changed them a bit and took away some of their believability as a couple. Given how closed off Claire was, this seems like a missed opportunity to show them opening up to each other. Claire’s situation would’ve been easily solved with some communication, but she spent nearly the entire book running. I thought Holt deserved better and even though Claire shaped up for him in the end, it still felt a little too much like a happily for now ending. Perhaps that means this series isn’t quite finished but who knows. I did enjoy this one overall and found it cute, but Holt and the general Christmas atmosphere definitely carried it for me.
