I have a secret. The Eliteratti Mindslayers will come for me and torture me and my sister if anyone ever discovers my power. I've hidden my secret since my parents abandoned my sister Huali and me in the slum. I don't remember anything about my life from before other than...other than....other than we were loved. And now that love is gone. Our parents sold us to Dribble and now we work in the Ninaku laundry. And it's safe and I only use my secret when Dribble tries to touch me or Huali; which lately is more than I can stand. If it weren't for Jix, my best friend, and the Forest outside the slum walls I don't know if I could survive. But I have a temper. When the Roya Tripsett--the three princes of the Roya Kingdom threaten Jix I can't help but protect my best friend. Unfortunately now they know; the three most powerful men in the Roya Kingdom now know of my Fatal Curse and they could kill me for it or...well I'm not certain what exactly they've decided to do to me. Keep me. Mate me. Or kill me.
Just like everyone else in the world (except politicians and the entire Kardashian family), Willa Hart hates talking about herself. Seriously, what's she supposed to say? That she's the most talented author in the world? That Liam Hemsworth, Zac Efron and Michael B. Jordan are knocking down her door for the honor of starring in the big-screen adaptation of her latest romance novel? That readers get into hair-pulling, kidney-punching, nipple-twisting brawls while standing in line to buy one of her books?
LIES!
Just like every other wordsmith in the world, she's certain everything she writes (including her own bio) sucks big, fat, hairy donkey danglers. But deep down she hopes and prays YOU are just a little bit delusional and think she IS a great writer, that Liam, Zac and Michael would be idiots to NOT want a part in her movie, and that you'd twist every perky nip you could get your fingers on just to LOOK at her new book. Of course, she's not holding her breath, but...can't a girl dream?
The concept of the mind slaying abilities was quite interesting, but the world building was very light, the characters pretty one dimensional and it had a pretty bad case of insta love, which I have a low tolerance for.
I expect others might like it more than I did, but this just didn't really do it for me.
Honestly, I don't know how I managed to finish this.
I pretty much hated all the characters. Meela was a precious perfect martyr character. Leo was the worst kind of rich, spoiled, racist asshole. Honestly, all the brothers and their people kind of were, but he really took it over the top. Taraz acted like an autistic 10 year old. Sarkany was a frat boy bro, and we got an appalling scene of him having sex with some random woman (Leo was mindspeaking him because he was interrupted while he was also trying to have sex with a random woman) after they'd met Meela. They all three represent the absolute worst of a privileged class who doesn't know the truth because they don't want to know - the truth would take some of their privilege away, after all. They are so fucking gross.
Also, the insta-love felt broken. They meet her. Are drawn to her. But go have sex with other people, because whatever. Then the next time they see her...mmm, still drawn, can't stop thinking about her. The third time they meet her, wham! Sarkany is adamant that they are fated mates! Wtf happened there, did the fated mates engine fail to turn over the first two times, or what? For it to go from iffy to dialed-to-11 was just broken.
Huali was an utter moron. Katya was casually evil - really, a seamstress was late getting her dress to her and she had her right hand chopped off? What the fucking fuck? Am I supposed to actually like ANY of these people?
The story didn't make sense - in no universe will I ever believe that two loving parents EVER decided that the best possible option was to sell their 6 and 8 year old daughters into life-long slavery as a Dreg - a class of people considered inhuman, no rights, can be killed for any reason or no reason at all.
Every Eliterrati in this book deserves to be killed. Period. The end. And yes, that includes the lead male characters. They are scum.
Wow!!! This was a amazing read. The adventure continue on right after Forbidden Mindslayer it didn't miss a beat. This fast paced read had so much going on you couldn't help but be hook from beginning to end. The only bad part was that it ended on a cliffhanger but I'm really not mad about it. I'm just more excited to see what else is in store for this series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
A mediocre reverse harem/fantasy book with some cool points here and there, but mostly the cheese factor is too high to truly get into it.
It’s hard to flow into a story when there’s too much weird new terminology to learn and some words are repeated INCESSANTLY to the point of annoyance. I get it. She’s a DREG. She is a NINAKU DREG. A DREG thats also a NINAKU DREG. And did I mention that she is also a BIRD? Bird bird bird bird. NINAKU DREG BIRD but not an ELITERRATI. Never that! Now let’s say that word 8,000 times so none of us forget it...
And why does there need to be some odd, flowery word for lady parts? Is that really necessary? Makes me think I’m reading about aliens with extra bits that I haven’t ever seen...if you’re gonna write a steamy romance, don’t wuss out. Just say it.
The romance itself was clunky to say the least. The palace intrigue had promise, but it was kind of rushed and the three brothers were too all over the place to really follow what the hell was happening.
And then, there’s the editing errors.
Words left out, extra words added, letters omitted, phrases repeated twice within a couple pages, dialogue repeated but between different characters....some basic editing would have cleaned it all up. Even having someone just read it and give honest feedback would have helped immensely.
Hell, if you’re reading this Willa Hart, feel free to pass me an ARC next time and I’ll have it all straightened out for you. The story here had tremendous potential, and I almost believed it might be a RH with a truly interesting storyline...but it was fumbled somewhere along the way and I’m just left feeling vaguely disappointed.
And lastly, the traipsing in and out of everyone’s minds nearly gave me a migraine. If you’re going to have mind powers perhaps some hard limits should be set? I can’t wrap my brain around who is allowed to mind talk to who or which mind powered people are stronger than which, and who has a private mind link and who doesn’t...at one point it seems like the channels are so open that everyone within a three mile radius will get the listen to the toilet flush every time someone goes to the bathroom. Living that way would be exhausting and it’s certainly exhausting to read with everything else going on.
I do enjoy fantasy worlds, and I do enjoy reading about new and foreign things, but this was rushed. Had Ms. Hart taken just another couple months to do a reread and have some friends help edit this might have been a great read. As it stands, it’s only a three star because I made it to the end and even writing a bad book is hard work.
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
Willa Hart's first-ever book series was an urban fantasy reverse harem and it was so good, I couldn't wait for her next series. Forbidden Power is the first book in her new series, Mindslayer, and it was amazing, I absolutely loved it. Willa has top has another great series on her hands.
Forbidden Power is a dystopian fantasy reverse harem. By the little clues that were left I could tell that at one point their society was like ours but at some point in the future things revert back to a monarchy and the classes are separated. The syntax is also a little different from ours, almost like a mix between the current speech patterns of today, with foreign touches and olden ways, if that makes any kinda sense. Society is broken up into two parts, the Eliteratti who have mindslayer powers (a mindslayer has powers over the mind) royals who are always Eliteratti, are upper class while the lower class has no powers, who are servants and called Dregs.
Meela is the main character, she is smart, brave, kind, a mindslayer and also a dreg, which in their world means death. If a dreg is born with mindslayer powers they and their entire family are killed. Meela has kept her powers hidden her entire life but when the princes of the kingdom, also known as the royal tripsett, start getting involved in her life things get complicated and a lot more dangerous.
The story was so interesting, figuring out how the mind powers work, who has them, and how exactly they come into play in the story. Always with royals there is politics and I am pretty sure I figured out a political plot behind a certain character, I have a couple of theories that relate to the past. I am really curious to find out if I'm right and if I'm not then I am dying to know what really happened in the past, everything is connected.
As for Meela, I love her, she is willing to do anything to keep the people she loves safe. She has a temper but she's smart and she thinks things through before saying or doing anything that could have great consequences. As for her love interests, the princes, I know I am a little shocked by responses to them. Two of the brothers have attitude problems, Sarkany I thought would be the roughest of the three and pig head about the situation he is actually most caring while Leo is an ass. I cannot stand the guy and I don't how Willa is gonna get me to love him but from where I am setting he is a small-minded, entitled brat who needs a lesson in hard truths. As for Taraz, omg, he is an adorable puppy who must be protected at all times.
There are a few things that made me absolutely love this book, one of them being the diversity in looks among the characters and the combinations. There were people of color represented but with different combinations like dark skin and white-blond hair and the fact that genetics doesn't really play in how a person looks, everything is random, how one sister can have dark skin while the other be fair-skinned. It's a whole new take on the situation and I find it interesting while the society may discriminate against people because of mind powers, they couldn't because of looks and that is a unique take on the situation for me.
Another thing that I loved is that princes get chapters and I mean a lot of them, it's like every other chapter is told from the point of view from a prince and personally I love that, I think it rounds out a story better when told from multiple points of view.
Forbidden Power was a quick read that I devoured and loved every second of it. The story was full of romance, political danger, steam, action, and mystery. Meela has just met the royal princes the question is will she be able to keep them. I can't wait for the next book, I am so excited to see what happens next, I am beyond ready for book two, Forbidden Journey.
Ok, I don't mean to talk major trash but.... This book is absolutely garbage. Like the author might be ok I've never read her stuff before and I'm not trying to go for a personal attack. I actually believe this is more in the fault of the publisher and editor that didn't do a better workshop on this book because all the stronger points that it could have possibly had were absolutely annihilated by the awful everything's that happens.
I just really hated this book, the initial romance trope is obviously a little interesting but that has nothing to do with why I don't recommend this.
The characters have no development. The storyline is barely there, let alone a strong enough plot that should lead to ~4 more books. The romance is utterly deplorable, it's based almost entirely on a first sight mate basis and makes absolutely no sense. The motivations became so incredibly befuddled.
Back to the main point I hate this tho, the characters were literally just dot points repeated over and over again. Omg no that's the smart boy, omg no that's the bear(?), Omg no that's the arrogant but hot boy, omg no thats a hot smart boy. And my favourite fucking line I swear. "I pushed into his thoughts, without his dull brain realizing". "I could see all the things they were thinking without them realizing". "I knew my best friend was hardcore fantasizing about me because I could read his thoughts and he had no idea." And many others very closely along that line. I just think this type of brain game really could have been written so much stronger.
This girl is so fucking irritating and besides the first couple chapters she has no personality, like essentially she devolves within this book and I just wanted to cry.
I've never read something that I knew was going to be so awful that literally didn't get any better. I'm honestly so disappointed because there are some really smart ideas I see in this book but it needs a major fucking workshop. Whoever the fuck published this did you dirty my dear.
After reading the prequel Forbidden Mindslayer, I knew I was going to dive straight into this book. It does jump ahead in time past when the prequel leaves off and we find Meela and her sister still loving as Dregs in the city. The Roya Tripsett are surrounded by enemies, though it seems they have some allies as well. Most problematic is that in order to ascend the throne, they need to choose their mate and wed. First they’ll need to agree... Fate intervenes to throw Meela and Jix in the path of the Roya brothers, and the story takes off like a runaway train from there.
It’s easy to get caught up in the tale of this fantastic world where people are communicating with one another through mind links, where some people can hear animals and the very molecules of the earth moving. More than anything, this is a fantastical tale that takes you on a journey into a new dystopian world worth exploring. If you’re ready to take the trip and you’re excited to explore the idea of fated mates and the pull and mind link that exists in that type of love, don’t hesitate... One click and grab this one now!
I really enjoyed this story! Meela has been trying to survive and keep her and her sister safe. Meela has The Gift, or Curse, depending on what class of people you are from. She is a Dreg, or so she thinks, and so has to keep her power hidden or they will kill not only her but her sister as well. She ends up meeting the Roya Tripsett when she goes with her friend to try and retrieve his invention from their land and she intrigues them. All three are intrigued which does not happen often and they all know they have to find their Queen. This starts Meela on a road she did not expect. I liked this story and the characters. One of the brothers highly irritated me through the second half of the book and I am waiting for him to redeem himself in the rest of the series. I loved Meela and her strength with what she is facing. She doesn't back down easy and will do what she has to. This book is just the beginning and it does end on a cliffhanger. I can't wait to pick up the next book and see where things are headed next. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
A bit too sweet and cheesy in some parts but not in others.
This book has some layers to it. Meela’s world isn’t a good world. People are being killed for their “mindslayer” abilities, there’s oppression and just not good. Meela’s bff Jix accidentally sends an invention over the Royal wall. Meela and Jix go to try to gather it and come across the Roya Tripsett.
A lot changes then, and the story is crazy but interesting. When Meela and one of the men give into their attraction they find they are fated mates. And this is where it gets pretty cheesy. Professions of love already, though it stands to reason due to being mates.
When this book ends it’s on a cliff hanger which annoys me greatly and I was mad that it ended there. But it has a peek into the next book and I kept reading and now I need to know what happens.
Pnr, rh, hidden heritage, royalty, forbidden magic. This is a series of short volumes. It is smoothly written and entertaining. I recommend it as a fun rh palette cleanser. Very slow burn, almost no burn. Plot heavy. The only real criticism is it needs a continuity editor. The amount of time that passes differs and changes throughout the story. One time, 6 weeks go by then it's only one week? The character pov's change without warning or demarcation, and often go back in time of the previous action. All that is quite confusing, but is a simple formatting fix. As young children, Our heroine and her sister are dropped off at a laundry in the low end of the social structure, without their memories. They struggle to survive while she must hide her mind control powers on pain of death. The story builds with mysteries galore.
Oh my word! This series so far is amazing! After reading the prequel, i was intrigued. So we have The Gift, The Curse and wolves so far. We have 3 Princes and an Uncle who are Eliterrati. We have Meela and her sister Huali who are Dregs. There seems to be a prophecy or something. Also Meela is missing some memories of her life and is keeping a secret. Unfortunately Meela, Taraz, Sarkany and Leo have something in common. Wanting to know what is going on. There is a lot of zigzagging going on. There is a bit of steam so we have a slow burn, which is perfect for this story. The ending was crazy and I want more. This is the first series that I have read of Willa Hart and I have to say that I am a fan for life. This is a wonderful adventure to read along to.
Oh man I am so going to need more of this series. Willa has just further hooked me into this new series of her of the Mindslayer. The Prequel, introduces you roughly to the characters and a general of the plot. Forbidden Power really moves things up a notch.
Meela and her sister are still in the dregs in the city. The Roya Tirpsett are needing to find their mate in order to ascend to the throne. Enter Meela and Jix, now the real heart of the story starts.
Willa has created a world that had me caught, to be honest, from the prequel Forbidden Mindslayer. The pace is perfect, the plot engaging, the characters memorable. The world is new and I cannot wait for find out more about it. I would highly recommend this series.
Forbidden Power started out a few years after the prequel. There has been much growing and learning from Roya Tripsett and from Meela. There is a lot of reveal and action in Forbidden Power. The story quickly weavers the reader in and leaves you wanting for more. It isn't a Pink Cinderella story, this is the darker more daring version. The unseen twists were superb. It's like playing reader chess just trying to keep up with these characters. I didn't want this to end and couldn't wait to devour the next book. This is part of series that is best read in order and I recommend the prequel first.
This is a great book, interesting plot, characters seem intriguing, so why, you may ask did I give it three stars?? I do not believe in writers who create books that are short for what feels like the sole purpose of making more money. If I wasn’t a KU customer i would be annoyed that I’d have to buy 5 other books in order to enjoy this series. What other reason is there to create such short books if not to make money when you could have continued on with the story? It just feels deliberate. So aside from that drama my only other issue is that some of the characters are annoying and a tad whiny.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest! This was a great book ! Meela has a secret. If the Mindslayers were to found out, she and her sisters would be dead. When her friend is in danger, Meela had no choice to use her power. Now the three princes know of her secret. What would they do to Meela ? Loved the characters + the storytelling ! It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book! I can't wait for the next book in this series.
I am sitting on the edge of my seat after reading this book. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book and see where this series takes us. I literally could not out this book down. No, seriously! It's 421am and I have not been to sleep and have a two year old that will be waking up in a few hours. This book was so worth the lack of sleep I will be feeling shortly. This book was that good that I couldn't bare to put it down. I am excited to have discovered Willa Hart and can't wait to see what she has in store for these characters.
3 & 1/2 stars rounded up. Well this was unique story, that I hadn't read anything like it before. I would have liked more world building, cause I wasn't sure how things ended up like they did. I wasn't sure if this is some dystopian world, or parallel world or? That was enough to kind of pull me out of the story at times. Towards the end, I gave up on trying to solve that riddle. I think the character development was a bit light, & I felt that some things were not explained enough, to make sense. I definitely feel the author needs a better content editor, as there were some things that were not consistent. Overall, this held my attention for the most part, and had me interested enough to read the prequel & move on to book 2.
Ms Hart has done it again! Got me wrapped up and not getting enough of these characters! OMG Meela is so confused right now! She knows "the Bear" is her mate but she's suppose to be the mate to the other two also...Leo is being a jealous best right now but it's true the kingdom is in trouble right now so they need to get their mindspeaking booties in gear! Great storyline with awesome characters..trust me by the time you finish one book your grabbing for the next! Definitely recommend!
I read this straight after Forbidden Mindslayer and was sucked straight into the story, I fell in love with the princes and Meela is an awesome main character. It ends on a cliffhanger of sorts so you will NEED the next book, I can't wait to see what happens next and if Meela ends up with a 4th member in her harem!
Can’t wait to get my hands on the next book of this series. What happens to my Roya Trippets ? This is a fast pace series with very likable characters you start reading and before you know it you have just finished the book and you are going crazy trying to feel where you can get the next book that is part of this series A must read
I really enjoyed this book. It's a great story that I need to continue! There are so many questions I need answering and I've only just started to get to know the princes. Meela's character has only just discovered she has a past before the laundry house and there are many secrets to be discovered. Both from Meela's past and also the Princes. I will definitely be reading the next book.
Wow! I started this book and could not put it down. There was just so much going on. I love the characters and the way the story is unfolding. The story telling is engaging and kept me wanting more. Of course, it ends one heck of a cliffhanger. I recommend starting with the prequel for background. This series is off to a great start. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Meela and her friend Jix have to go get his drone that had crashed. She has to use her powers to save them but gets on the radar of the three princes. Meela and her sister could be killed if the mindslayer finds out of her gift. Where the prequel left off and the first book begins is flawless. I cant wait for book two especially after the cliffhanger
Meela has a huge secret and an unexpected attraction three princes. It looks like fate has a lot in store for these four and many truths need to be revealed. Great start to this series, the story is action packed and will keep you guessing. I freely reviewed this book.
I really enjoyed reading this book! I am so excited for the next book wow! And what a cliffhanger! I love the storyline its awesome! The characters are awesome too! So ready for the next one! Highly recommend!
An exciting start to an already addicting series. So much action, suspense and chemistry between Meela and the Roya Tripsett that I am giddy in excitements for what’s to come. Can’t wait for the next installment in this already addicting series.
Holy moly, what a great book. I really enjoyed the world building Willa gave us and I found the adventure completely captivating. Absolutely loved it. The mystery, the storyline and the unique approach to the characters had me glued. Well done Willa, perfect start to the series.
After reading the prequel I wanted to know what happened next and oh boy lots happening in the book! Life isn't what any of them thought it would be, you have to read to find out what it's like. I'm so glad the next book is out because we're what an ending!
I enjoyed this action packed read and will be continuing with the series. The world Hart has created is intriguing and I’m anxious to unlock the mysteries surrounding Meela a s her connections to the crown Trippsett and the wolfskin.
