An evocative and accessible picture book about Anne Frank and how she found her voice in a world determined to silence her. All her life, Anne Frank wanted to be heard. Really, truly heard. Linda Elovitz Marshall introduces readers to the story of Anne Frank in this powerful book about family, war, and the importance of finding your voice.During her two years in hiding from the Nazis, Anne Frank poured her soul into a red plaid diary named Kitty. She wrote honestly of the reality of Nazi occupation, of daily life in the annex, and of her longing to be heard. More than anything, Anne spoke the truth, and her words have echoed throughout history.Gorgeous prose and striking art deliver Anne's ever-relevant story with poignancy and grace, while robust back matter -- including biographical information, an author's note, and a timeline -- makes this the perfect book for history curriculums.
I have always loved words. My parents said I spoke in full sentences before I was a year old. They also said I didn't walk until I was two.
I was still a baby when I saw a TV commercial about a vacuum cleaner and its expandable bag. That night, my parents begged me to eat "just one more bite." I refused. Using a phrase I'd learned from the vacuum cleaner commercial, I explained, "My stomach is fully expanded." My parents laughed...and I was saved from having to eat that dreadful "one more bite."
My love of words extended to foreign languages. I was one of those kids who loved school. I loved Hebrew school, too. Learning Hebrew taught me that words can be composed of roots and that those roots can change, often in predictable ways. I noticed some of the rules I'd learned in Hebrew applied to English, too. I also love word games, puzzles, and etymology, learning about the origins of words.
Some of my other favorite things include being outside, exploring, and being around animals. When I was a child, I wanted a horse. I didn't get one. But when I grew up, my husband and I moved to a farm. That's where we raised our four children...and sheep, chickens, and rabbits. It's also where some of my stories are based.
I also love teaching and have taught all ages, from babies through college. I've taught parents, too.
When I write stories, I combine so many of the things I love. I'm always learning and exploring...and having a fabulous time!
A thoughtful biography about Anne Frank that simplifies the story in a way that maintains the integrity and truth of the real life events, but still makes it easy for younger kids to understand. I will definitely be adding to my collection to share with teachers and students.
Who would have thought we'd need another book on Anne Frank? Well, we NEED this one. I just read this beautifully done book and cannot wait to get it into the hands of my grandchildren. Although it does retell the well-known story, THIS version of Anne's story is completely relatable to all children who feel that sometimes their voices are not heard. Ms. Marshall recounts the story of a horrible time in history that MUST be told over and over again, however, the layers in this book go deeper than just the facts of Anne Frank's life and the history surrounding it. This is the perfect book to start important discussions about prejudice, bigotry, and the importance of making our voices heard. As an educator, mother, and grandmother, I highly recommend this book
5 stars. Perfect introduction for young readers to Anne Frank and her famous diary, and Anne’s desire to be heard. Cleanly written and presented in larger print with crisp illustrations. Timeline fills in Anne’s history. Great author note. Be sure to note the end pages and case cover art.
An easy to understand picture book about Ann Frank. The author writes about a difficult subject in a sensitive way that I appreciated. I’m looking forward to sharing this book with teachers and students.
This picture book is nicely done with a combination of text and images bringing the story of Anne Frank to those too young to yet embrace all the atrocities of what many people faced during Hitler's reign.
An insightful, and interesting biography of Anne Frank and her short life and how she made her voice heard through diary known as Kitty that she kept while her family hid from the Nazi regime in a warehouse and was published posthumously by her father on June 25 1947 in the Netherlands.
This picture book biography tells Anne Frank's story with historical detail and personal depth, emphasizing her emotional complexity and her desire to be heard. I am very impressed with this book's accuracy to historical events and to Anne's character, and found it very moving.
I read this book to my students in grades 3-5. They enjoyed the story and had a lot to say/questions to ask after we finished. The subject was handled in an appropriate way, making this book a good starting point for introducing the Holocaust to children.
It's important that lives and stories and HISTORY are never forgotten. This is a very relatable picture book biography that focuses on Anne Frank's lifelong desire to be heard.
Fabulous book for slightly older picture book crowd. I absolutely love the repeated line, "She wrote what she could not say..." Wonderful addition to other Anne Frank books.
Anne Frank's story is told in a way that encourages children to think, feel, and relate. The illustrations are also very moving. An inspirational book that should be on every child's bookshelf.
A simple, illustrated introduction to Anne Frank's life, why she wrote her diary and why she needed to be heard. Lots of links at the end for those who are inspired to to read further.
