The beginning of this actually reminded me of the plot of one of those old B movies where the brave young and nubile heroine with heaving busts is actually sacrificed on the alter of a creatures rampant and sadistic lusts by her scheming and unpleasant family.
It really had all the makings of a low budget extravaganza and I do so love me a cult classic and this set that stage for that rather beautifully.
Unfortunately, this book is chock full of cliches the horrid manipulative family, the sacrificial virgin and many more such scenarios, It also lacked world-building.
I mean I wasn’t originally even sure if this was a fantasy or just set in an alternate past on earth until it was later clarified by Alaric and even then it didn’t seem like any earth I actually recognised.
I also wasn’t sure of the year, though later through references made I realised it was very early Earth the only problem with that was it didn’t actually seem that way due to the way people talked and acted.
Also Wasn’t Alaric an actual real-life general and then later king of the Goths add into that the fact that the Vandals were actually a real Germanic tribal people.
This then became a blend of true facts mixed with fiction that resulted in it feeling out of time and place, well to me anyway.
I also found there to be a lack of deeper explanations concerning Alaric’s and his people beyond the superficial that they were an advanced species who had crashed on earth.
Then the conversations that took place also felt rather juvenile and simple and Julia and Alaric themselves were both so easy going and extremely placid and just so bloody nice to each other all of the time.
I mean they literally never really got angry with each other like ever, I’m not one for unnecessary angst but come-on.
Also having magic work on the Vandals when they accept it only was quite the contradiction and didn’t make any real sense, talk about convenient timing.
But despite my above points I still found this somewhat intriguing.
It was imaginative and if this had been a fantasy or simple sci-fi It would have been easier to accept it was the mixing it with ancient history that lost me slightly.
The writing itself was ok and the sexy times were hot and super saucy.
This for me was just ok, the idea itself was great and it did have its pluses but they, unfortunately, were not enough to deliver this fully.
Also, I’m a bit unsure of some of the authenticity of the historical facts that are claimed here.
Though obviously I’m no historian and I could be mistaken, I just wasn’t fully convinced sorry.
This is a mostly an instalove un-angsty fluff read so if that’s your bag this will definitely be a fit.
If you prefer your stories with more depth and filled with rich historical atmosphere and facts then this probably won’t be for you.

This novel was well written and edited, with well constructed sentences and few if any typos that I caught in the ARC version of this manuscript. The world building was unusual and super creative, something I had not encountered before in any of the sci-fi romances I have read up to this point. This novel is set on Earth during the early Dark Ages, I believe, during the time when the Roman Empire had split into two. The hero was part of a crash-landed crew of aliens from an intergalactic society. I loved the creativity of the setup and world building. The characterization was excellent, with both of these protagonists being vibrant, sympathetic individuals. The development of the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine was sweet and organic, and the hero's misunderstandings regarding human culture were cute and added some great comic relief. The plot and pacing was excellent, with me being invested in how the heroine was going to resolve her crisis of loyalty and me rapidly turning pages to find out what was going to happen next! There was a medium amount of angst on the heroine's part, but I thoroughly enjoyed it because the angst was caused or contributed to by very high stakes. High angst caused by high stakes is one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. I usually cannot stand romance novels with low stakes, or even worse, high angst AND low stakes. This novel uses the Enemies to Lovers trope, the Fated Mates trope, and the Virgin Heroine trope. The Virgin Heroine trope was intentionally used by the author for some comic relief and social commentary, which I really appreciated. The world building, plot, and pacing in this novel rated five stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship also rated five stars. The combined score for this novel, therefore, was five stars. I believe this novel was longer than any other stories I have read by this author, and I suspect the longer story formant is one of the big reasons why this is the best novel I have read by this author so far. I think her skill and authorial voice is best suited to a longer story length to really shine. This story ends on a Happy Ever After instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus to this story and hopefully the rest of the series, if she continues that pattern. I recommend this story to readers who enjoy alien sci-fi romance OR readers who enjoy historical romances set in times and places that are NOT Regency England. Personally, one of the reasons I have a hard time reading many historical romance novels is because so many of them are set in Regency or Victorian England and it becomes incredibly boring. I plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel, for sure.

I used a credit on this because of the overwhelmingly great reviews on amazon... but I thought it was just corny. And I’m just not a fan of aliens on earth. I want to read about the places off-world, that’s one of the best parts to alien romances to me.

A perfect example of this is when “the bad guy” spent a whole chapter explaining every evil thing they have ever done and all the reasons why. I hate this. I hate it when the villain explains themselves in a lengthy monologue. It’s lazy writing to me.

The narration was fine at first, but the longer I listened the less I liked it. I hated the fake British accent she did for all the aliens. And it was gross how when she said words with P’s it sounded like she had too much spit in her mouth and that she was spitting when popped her p’s.

If I can return this I will because it was a waste of a credit in my opinion.

This was a very clever approach to this story line! The Vandals, who are aliens, arrive on Earth and want to live here. They demand the deceased Emperor’s virgin daughter, but when it turns out she “isn’t”… they instead offer Julia, the bastard daughter of the Emperor who is also part-witch. If she can keep the aliens “busy”, her sister can travel to the Eastern Empire and bring back an army of reinforcements to retake the city and force the aliens out. But Julia begins to fall in love with the Vandal King, Alaric. Will his people be taken by surprise and killed? Or is there some way out of this mess?

The story was entertaining and I really do recommend it. You’ll want to see if Julia needs to resort to her witch powers. There is so much going on and you’ll have fun with this one.

I simply adore this author and this book was as good if not better than anything I have read from her in the past. When Julia's sister, the princess, and the queen come calling asking Julia to take her sister's place in the virgin sacrifice to the conquering Vandal King, Alaric. Julia hasn't had an easy life. Being the illegitimate daughter of the late Emperor she was loved by her father and treated kindly by her half-brother but by and large she was left to her own devices and on top of everything else she has to hide the fact that she has magic. She agrees to the ruse in an effort to serve her people but nothing is quite as it seems. Alaric and his people are not the monsters that everyone thinks they are, the virgin sacrifice that they require is also not as it seems and even the Queen is not who Julia always thought her to be. The story teaches us not to judge a book by its cover and to always be open to following your instincts and allowing your perceptions to be changed. Passion so intense it ignites the pages, danger around every corner, unexplained betrayals and emotion that gets you right in the heart make this a must read.

I could not push myself farther than 15%. It didn't read well. At all. I can't figure out the time period. Between the language and dialog, the inconsistent intelligence Julia has, and the odd behaviors of the characters... I couldn't take any more. I think of it was rushed, probably had a deadline, was not thought out, and the character had no character. I couldn't relate to her at all. One minute she's a pushover, the next she is resolved to not go down without a fight, and then she's a virgin who's never seen a naked man aroused by his beautiful equipment. Neh... no flow.

WOW! I loved this book! It is just delightful with its mix of history and future. As a history nerd I was so delighted at the facts that were woven into this story. And it is a true story-it has all the elements of a classic, action, a hero's journey, a despicable bad guy, and a beautiful happy ever after! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and fell so in love with Julia and Alaric's story! Dare I hope for a HEA for Galla and her space beast??? (please, please, please)!

This story felt a lot like when my mom was teaching me to drive at 16. Lots of jerky starts and stops, inconsistent speed, and an angry woman yelling a lot.

It took me 4 days to read 8% of this book and I just couldn't finish it. Here are the things that really stood out for me:
- the author is attempting a historical renactment where the Vandals that sacked rome and conquered are aliens. That's actually a super cool premise, and I can dig it, but this author is no Colleen Mccullough. Did I hear you mention the words "Constantinople" and "WESTERN EMPIRE" in the same sentence? The author could literally google her way out of that mistake if she'd done even 5 seconds of research.
- she mentions traditional monarchy all over the place but if this is set in Rome, or even post-Rome, kings weren't really a thing unless you were one of the germanic or Celtiberian tribes. Maybe I know too much about Roman history, but I just felt the overall inconsistency to be annoying. If you don't care about being even the least bit historically accurate, why not just invent the whole thing?
- The characters all speak in a fully modern ironic dialog. Fine, ok, whatever. This is annoying since you're doing a historical piece, but even I'll admit that this is me being picky. It's just really annoying to see a sentence that reads "Literally, everyone had heard of them." That's an actual quote. Not a good look to put that comma there.
- This had such a D movie"ketchup as blood" feel to the way the scenario and the heroine were described. Things like "messy breasts" and uninspired depictions of just how evil and awful her stepmother is... the dialog was just bad.
- Oh, and get this... the protagonist is a witch! That's right! Just as she's being tied to the altar for the Vandal king to be sacrificed because it "is still a thing" (another quote) she mentions that also, she's the daughter of a witch. This could have been included in the backstory given earlier when she was expressing concerns over the request from her half-sister. But NOPE. This had to have the calm delivery of a nervous 16 year old behind the wheel of her first car.

I can't stress enough how much I did not like this book. #dnf.

The Vandal and the Virgin has been on my TBR list for a little while now, and I’m so glad I got to read it—but I'm annoyed that Book 2 isn’t up yet! *pout*

Set on backwater Earth, sometime during the Dark Ages it sounds like with Britons and Rome and stuff, The Vandal and the Virgin marries historical with sci-fi romance. And the baby is this beautiful book I’ve just read.

It follows Julia, a virgin and a novice witch, who meets hero Alaric—an alien male from a race called the Vandals, when she’s offered as a “virginal sacrifice”. There was nothing sacrificial about the way these two went down on each other, let me tell you! Alaric is described as being this “gruesome” monster. Him and the other Vandals are feared by Julia and her backward people. Everyone believes in magic on Earth; they can’t believe that these Vandals, a superior intelligent race, are here to help them.

The Vandals are stuck on Earth, and being their dauntless leader Alaric hopes to have them settle down on their new planet and try to make the best of their lives. It also helps that the Vandals—an all-male crew, are compatible with the Earthlings. Meaning they can procreate and grow their families.

Alaric wants to find his true-mate, but he’s happy to settle with Julia. He just doesn’t expect for her to be exactly what he’s been searching for. And Julia’s pretty smart herself. She quickly proves that she’d be the perfect queen to Alaric’s king.

I loved, loved, LOVED this one. Michele Mills knows her sci-fi. She spins a fascinating, twisty and romantic tale with Julia and Alaric. Everything from the world-building, to the conflicts, and the cast of secondary characters (hello Jasta and Theron; can’t wait for your story!) makes this one compelling read.

If Michele Mills is new to you, and sci-fi romances are your jam and sauce, then pick this one up. I promise you have nothing to lose.

5 stars for me!

I refuse to leave one of those "not my cup of tea" reviews because they lack any description of why the reader decided to abandon book. And I also hate to leave real spoilers. But, eh.
Here goes:
So, as the title might clue you in, the h is a virgin and the H is looking to claim her. I'm all for fluff reads. But the dialogue in this one flaps about. I think I made it all of 1 chapter in before giving up. Slut shaming, conniving a family member to be the sacrifice instead of you (it's ok, she's a bastard so expendable), no mention (although there may be later on) of how these aliens came to their world, 200 of these "beasts" took on over 5k Goths (and I'm guessing they aren't the modern kind who enjoy metal and dress all in black), and they are ok with sex on an altar but woe be to the chick who isn't a virgin- she gets tossed into the woods to die. Why is virginity prized? One boink and it's over. Does this apply to widows as well as unmarried? Because if not it's more than a little hypocritical. If they can do space travel the whole "better be virgin because I'm not raising someone else's kid" nonsense is exactly that. And if they are set on rescuing these humans, why would they care if they were raising someone else's kid? Sending someone out to die because of a lack of hymen is ridiculous. But, honestly, the dialogue is what ran me off. It was grammatical, I'll give it that, but mostly whining and hand wringing statements combined with severe narcissism. Maybe I need to leave fluff reads alone. They tend to frustrate me more and more but I just finished with 2 major series rereads and was looking for something light and fluffy. The author has other books and I've read a handful of her Bounty Hunter series. It was much better done.
The 2 stars are for the lack of grammatical errors in the small section I managed to make it through.

Okay so this was another alien/virgin story but it wasn't! The aliens have crash landed on earth and are far advanced (earth is still quills and scrolls) and they are shape shifters. Right from the beginning there is a huge difference. The aliens don't have a clue about the earth people and they don't have a clue about the aliens. The aliens do however, save the earth people and their city when it's sacked by the Goths. Alaric the leader, demands the king's daughter as a virgin sacrifice. Well Calla is no virgin so she convinces her half sister to take her place while she escapes for reinforcements to re-take the city from the aliens. Julia is caught in the middle. She actually likes Alaric, she asks questions and he answers and they both discover they've made a lot of incorrect assumptions. Julia is caught in the middle - she started this to overthrow the aliens and open the gates for the invasion her sister is rousing. Alaric is no dummy - he knows she is NOT Calla but still doesn't know who she is. But he does know she's is his fated mate. And not only is Julia not Calla, but she also has some hidden skills which would make her an outcast among her own people.

This was a fast paced, very entertaining read. I enjoyed it more than I have an alien book for a long time. Just the differences in their perceptions and the fact that they could actually talk to each other instead of making snap (wrong) decisions. The question is where does Julia really stand??? (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC).

I enjoyed reading about a new shifter species called "Vandal" - a mix between alien "human," and, I imagined a cross between a bull and bear - although I am curious what others thought 😀 The Vandals are aliens that crashland on a planet similar to Earth (how the inhabitants are described), and because they are different and new, they are attacked immediately. The Vandals are victorious, but the battle was brutal, with the humans sustaining the majority of the deaths, their king killed, and his castle in ruins. He's survived by Sonja, the manipulative queen, her daughter Galla and her stepdaughter Julia (daughter of the late king and his mistress). Barely tolerated by the two women, Julia is sent to live in the convent; until Sonja and Galla show up explaining that the ruler of the Vandals, Alaric, is demanding to be mated to the "virgin" princess. Because Galla is not a virgin, Julia is forced to pose as Galla while they leave the city to get help. Julia, restrained in chains (the reasoning behind this is funny) in front of a stone altar, waits for the arrival of Alaric. Their adventure begins filled with passion, espionage, betrayal, lies, new friendships and eventually, a new beginning for both. There is plenty of characters to have their own stories told and hope the series continues to be written well.

This is a wonderful read, thoroughly enjoyable…
This was a most interesting read that I found impossible to put down once I started reading it I had not realised how totally absorbed I would be in this story. The planet had been landed on by the Vandals and they had then come to their aid when the humans had been attacked by a violent grout known as the Goths.
Julia has been mated to the Alpha of the Vandals and she had fallen in love with the alien and he with her, she had been the illegitimate daughter of the king and her mother who had been a with had died in childbirth. Unloved by her stepmother and her daughter she had only known the affection of her father the king and her brother but both had been killed in battle by the Goths.
It had also been known that her dead mother was a witch and Julia had also been aware that some of the abilities she had could be used to kill however, it was essential that these abilities were kept hidden. been Alaric had worked well together building a happy and content society on earth.
I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

What's not to love from this book. It's a good combo of witchcraft, alien crash, and historical romance.
description

Somehow the combo was deliciously mixed well with quite a smutty hotness and explosive chemistry. Yep, you heard it right; there's some interspecies copulation and it was hot!! All the details also kept you entertained throughout the story. Somehow the plot managed to manage the balance of those 3 elements and not overwhelmed you with unnecessary details. It was just right and easily digest too. It was somehow easy for us to immerse on the foreign (alien) species life, the story's time frame, and still insert some badassness of the female characters inside. Yep, the female characters here were independent, brave and smart on their own way. A good story indeed.

No OW/OM

Historical romance, royalty romance

This was an interesting book. This is set in our world, back in the times of the Western Empire and the Goths. And at this time, thru a wormhole, the Vandals landed. They are from a different world and are marooned on this one. They want to be allied with the Empire so that they can not just survive here, but to flourish. In that, they demand the virgin daughter of the Emperor, who was killed while fighting the Goths. Unfortunately, the acknowledged daughter isn't a virgin. So they recruit Julia, who is the bastard daughter of the Emperor and a witch. They want her to distract the Vandals until they get back with an army from Emperor Theodosius of Constantinople. They don't expect Julia to fall in love and become the mate of the Vandal King, Alaric. The journey to their HEA is great reading and I hope that there will be future books in this world. This was amazing! I would not think a historical/sci-fi romance could be so intriguing. But once I started this, I could not put it down. This is the way to kick-off a new series. As usual, the humans fear the aliens and consider them horrible beasts. When Julia is sent in as Alaric's 'virgin sacrifice', she finds out just how wrong they were. Alaric 'scents' Julia is his truemate. He also knows she is hiding things from him. Their journey to a HEA might not be easy, but it will definitely be worth it. I enjoyed watching these two fall in love. I thought the development of characters, along with the pacing of events flowed smoothly. The secondary characters were also very likeable. I can't wait to read each of their stories. A must read in my opinion.

I thought this was an interesting sci-fi twist, and it was pretty good once I got past about 11%.

Just- WARNING- watch for extreme eye strain from multiple hard rolls due to ridiculous dialogue.

I would have added the actual quotes but they were so ridiculous that I was unable to force myself to add it to my highlights. I have a reputation to uphold you know :)

After the totally stupid attraction the heroine had to the aliens penis- and it was discussed in detail believe me- the story became a bit more believable.
And really- a virgin living in a convent sees his penis and she thinks its beautiful and she wants to kiss it (and more)???? REALLY? Come on. HARD EYE ROLL.

I liked the aliens stuck on a planet and mixing with the inhabitants story line, I liked that they were progressive in their thinking and not the opposite, and the heroine was given a place to use her talents.

I have really enjoyed this authors Alien Bounty Hunter stories and wanted to read more of her work. I enjoyed the characters and the writers skill - I empathised with the female leads uncertainty over how to proceed with a relationship whilst engaging in (what she felt was) a mandatory deception of the male lead. This felt like the introduction to a series with possibilities for future stories easily dicernable. Ill be curious to see if the author pursues them.

I appreciated the relationship building with secondary characters. No couple exists in vacuum and the secondary character development was important for me.

Another fantastic story by Michele Mills and I loved Julia’s and King Alaric’s story. The Vandals arrived on earth they wanted the Emperor’s virgin daughter but she isn’t a virgin so they offer Julia the Emperor’s daughter from another mother who is also a witch to keep the Vandals busy while they try to get the army back to drive the aliens out but what they didn’t count on was Julia and King Alaric falling in love. This story was go go go from the very first page I loved the characters it’s action packed with twists and turns, passion and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages. Fantastic story I loved it and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

The book is as bad as the cover

I read this book because of some good reviews, and I have to say...The book is as bad as the cover, no depth for the characters, the plot was weak and language like "oh my gosh " was used, and it had errors. It was like a lite YA book. Last but not least, it features the most popular type of alien among authors, for some unknown reason a large demon with horns and claws and fangs ,the colour varies form author to author blue ,red, gray in this case. I am not sure if is a lack of imagination or a creepy conspiracy among authors to always have us read and love deamon looking aliens. Why is the deamon/devil so appealing to this writers I don't know but it starting to get old and boring.

Sometimes Wanting Everything Is Worth The Risk....
by and1515

Julia's life was simple living in a convent until her half sister and step mother wreak her world but in the end she does what they want starting a whole new reality she never imagine.
Alaric and his fellow Vandals were having issues adjusting to there new world without the technology they had on their home world but the moment he sees her waiting for him Alaric wants her.
I'm excited to say I adored this story because it gets even better with twisty turns and a couple who ignite the pages

I really enjoyed this book and thought the author created a world that was a nice blend of past and future. When the Vandals arrive they think Earth and the humans are primitive, but the only option they have is to adapt and survive. I hope there is more to come with these characters. Julia and Alaric were both strong characters and really pulled through to rebuild their home and overcome obstacles put in place to undermine them and ruin their attempt to provide safety and a home for their people. Very creative world building.

I can’t believe how good this story is! Absolutely Fabulous!

There was so much story within these pages. I’m a little in awe. Really good book which incorporates both “alien invaders” and witches with distinct powers. The story is also set in earth’s past, adding a historical aspect to this sci-fi romance. It assuredly is a romance. More than one. The author is skillful at writing multiple storylines and characters while not losing sight of the plot. There’s even a break down at the end for those who like all the lose ends tied up.
In addition, this is also a very sexy tale.

When I started reading this book it was a bit dry and dense. But once I got more into the story and finally got Alaric’s perspective (much needed bc him not knowing human customs was 😂) the book was much better. It was such a page turner, I could not put this book down. I had to read it from start to finish. It had so much that needs to be figured out and so many questions that needed to be answered that I was drawn in by the intrigue. Although there were times where some of the information was a bit much and seemed unnecessary the book is really good and worth reading. The ending was shocking. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

It was okay, not great. I don’t think I’ll be reading from this author again. The miscommunication was SOOOOOO irritating.

I must say though, I did like the magic system. It was simple enough to add to the story, but it didn’t take away from the romance or the plot. It was nice.

The ending was really good! ☺️☺️☺️

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

Trigger warnings (that I can think of): miscommunication, the with holding of info from both sides, misogyny, simple magic systems, mentions of violent death (on and off page), and murder.

There is also on and off page mentions/description of children jeopardization.

I loved this book. It was a wonderful mix of genres: sci-fi, paranormal, medieval and romance and it worked together beautifully. I have read almost everything that Ms. Mills has read and this is my new favourite story. Julia is a gentle, studious but so very strong woman with hidden powers and Alaric is an equal match to her in every way. I love the nods to Beowulf and ancient myths. Overall, this was a great read and I do hope there will become a series of stories.

I loved the interaction of the characters, the female lead was funny and always was waiting for everything to fall apart , and being used to kindness didn't know how to act when given to here. This book has become one of my favorite Virgin awakening books. Waiting the sisters and some of the supporting characters book .

What a funny idea to expect a virgin bride. But for real it was again a funny writing good book with a lot of different characters wonderful formed into a nice little story. The only thing was, I wished it was longer. The sister with her crude language at the beginning, I really had to laugh out loud. The idea of a one true mate, that is nice. There were some twist in it, some Vandal and a HEA with two more promising stories to write.
