One Kiss From You

Rate this book
A bold woman known as the "duchess of Magnus" was wagered—and won—in a card game. But the woman who arrived was her shy, quiet cousin Eleanor.

Eleanor de Lacy must have been mad to agree to exchange identities with her stronger-willed cousin. She would never convince Remington Knight of the folly of this union—especially since the man seemed so determined for it to take place. Worse still, she finds Remington dazzlingly attractive—and she's charmed by his attempts to seduce her, even though he believes she is already his. But if he ever learns of Eleanor's deception, this daring rogue will wreak havoc...upon her reputation and her heart.

Remington had expected a haughty, unbending aristocrat who would ensure his entrance into good society. But this "duchess" is a most pleasant surprise—modest, warm-hearted, endearingly awkward, and a delight to the eye. In short, she is exactly the sort of bride Remington could fall passionately, completely in love with...if he weren't so intent on his revenge.

“You don’t like her,” he insisted.

“All right! I don’t like her.” Eleanor held her breath and waited for lightning to strike.

Nothing happened. No one even noticed. Nothing happened. No one even noticed her admission. No one except Mr. Knight, and he had driven her to that grievous offense. “But I don’t want you to think badly of her because of my disaffection.”

“Why not?” he asked impatiently. “You’re going to be my wife. Who else would I listen to?”

His blind faith took her breath away.

"One Kiss from You" is the story of Madeline and Remington.

The companion from the first book arrives to fulfill a wager. She is to pretend to be her cousin and be betrothed to the hero, until the cousin returns. She meets the hero, and is instantly taken as well as cautious of the brooding man. While the hero expects a loud mouthed shrew, he gets an insanely beautiful but very sedate and righteous fiancé. Sparks fly, but truth is hidden until it is too late..
The hero had his reasons for wanting a "duchess" wife, and is pretty pissed when his plans are thwarted. He is pretty mad- but never mean. The heroine takes him head on- fighting him with her kindness and mad sex techniques. I adored their love for the dog "Lizzie", there is some vengeful drama but all ends in a HEA.

Not as yummy as book 1 but insanely sexy and a pretty good read.

What definitely went in it's favor is me being a rabid Julia Quinn and "Bridgerton" fan and watching the trailer on loop for 5 hours. I definitely saw Rege and Phoebe as the MCs and it was SO HOT!

If he was not careful, this woman would fascinate him.
Remains one of my favorite historicals of all time!! The masquerade of timid and composed Eleanor pretending to be her Duchess cousin, Madeleine, who is as straightforward and vivacious as they come, was highly enjoyable. Even though I knew exactly how everything would happen and play out, I was getting increasingly nervous as the story progressed, the charade went further and further along, and Remington pushes "Madeleine" closer and closer to the wedding date.

Remington and Eleanor were a perfect pair and it's wonderful watching him break down some of her defenses and help her to grow more confident and sure of herself. So many things are a stretch, but I was happy to use my imagination and give a little leeway here. Sometimes I am a stickler, but other times, all the other components of the book are so great that I kind of don't care ;-). SO GREAT!!

Re-read, I think I liked this book better when I was young. I may have out grown Christina Dodd.

I still find her characters charming though. I like Remington and Eleanor, until Eleanor started scheming and "taking things into her own hand". Then she became too pathetically wanting. Major turnoff for me. I mean what she did was really underhanded. She tricked Remington into marrying her because she fell in love with him.

I also think Remington overlooked the trick too easily. He reconciled with the fact that Eleanor lied to him about who she was and now he was tied to her for life in marriage too quickly and too calmly. I would be so pissed off, it doesn't matter how much I want to sleep with the person.

My experience with Dodd has been quite consistent: I like her characters a lot but am not so impressed with the plots. Quite a pity, quite a pity.

I'll start with the negative points. Christina Dodd does not, I think, really understand the Regency world she writes about. Titles, points of etiquette, the historical context, fashion - time and again the details grate. She can't even be bothered getting the right spelling for Berkeley Square. Nightingales weep.

The plot is not just far-fetched but annoyingly so: neither of the MCs has sufficient motivation for any of their actions. Which makes the first half of the book intensely irritating. "Why are you DOING this?" I yell. And my Kindle shrugs, in that dismissive way digital devices have. "Oh, y'know. 'Cos."

And yet, there is something here. In spite of the inconsistent characterisation of the H &h, their developing relationship forces its way through. Partly it's down to Remington Knight's transatlantic energy, and dismissal of ton etiquette; partly to Eleanor's development from nonentity to confident woman. Far and away the best scenes are between the pair, where alpha Remington commands, and Eleanor subverts, most especially in bed. It was hugely refreshing to read of a couple where the woman (in spite of her lack of sexual experience) takes the initiative & control. At one point, Eleanor is (somewhat ironically) "pleasuring her Master". “Deeper,” he whispered. “Harder.” Lifting her head, she said, “Master, I did not give you advice when you rendered a like service for me.”

I'm fairly sure I won't go back to this, but the good points do at least balance the lack of plot and historical sensitivity.

Narration fail on Hero's voice. Narration by Justine Eyre (audible review)

Wow this hero really started out creepy. The American hero narration sounds creepy and the the things he says is creepy and way too domineering for a historical romance. I don't know how the heroine was liking him at all the first half of the book.

It did get better after about 50%, the author eased up on the creepiness. There story line was just okay. There was a little mystery and revenge going on. But it didn't make up for the first half of the story.

As for the narration. Well Justine Eyre should stick to British accents because this hero's character was not good and the american accent did not help the situation. Otherwise the narration was good.

I can't say I recommend this story. I do recommend the first story in the series, Scandalous Again, that was a much better story by far.

Same opinion as with the previous book: beautiful and engaging, full of romance and a lot of fun. Eleanor and Remington were great together. It took a bit long to get to Eleanor’s true identity, but overall the pacing was decent.

I was a li'l excited when I found this book at the library book sale last week. I had to have it, because I'd read Madeline's story a couple months back and had been looking for this one ever since, because I had been left wondering what was to become of poor Eleanor. Well, Eleanor proved that she actually could take care of herself. She blossomed in this story from meek, shy, scared companion of a duchess to a girl who knew what she wanted and wasn't too scared to take it. I adored her character, she was good, like someone I'd want to be friends with. I wasn't too sure of Mr. Knight at first, he was intimidating, and more than a little overbearing and commanding, and I was left unsure of his intentions. I liked the little bit of the mystery behind who killed Lady Pricilla though, it gave an added bit of something to the story. I laughed out loud when Eleanor cut her hair as a show of defiance to Mr. Knight's commands, I was cheering her on as she learned to stand up for herself. When the time came for their marriage, I felt nervous, I didn't know how it was going to go, and how he was going to handle it when he learned the truth. I admit I was even a bit afraid for Eleanor. But it all turned out well, with an exciting kidnap and fight scene towards the end, and the return of Madeline with Gabriel in tow. I was smiling as I finished this book.

See, aha, for good plain reasons: very good chemistry, very good development, very nice quirkiness of the main female lady, sex part was nice as well (the wonders I keep learning and memorising). But no-nos are here as well: he's blond. I can neglect that he's blond if I see that line just once so I can in my mind forget almost instantly, erase erase! that image before it comes real, but his blondness and pale blue eyes were described numerous times and I can't fantasize about blond hair and pale eyes. Second thing, the story was again a mystery story, I don't even know if I am using the correct term, but I don't care and this is how much I care. I don't like, again repeating myself, who killed who and why, not of my interest. No, no number three: I don't think it's possible to fall in love in a period of 4 days. Even if she's a virgin. Number 5, and the last thing. I think if you prepare one plan your whole life and you're really determined to see it come alive, and you're really angry and mad and filled with hatred, I think, in my humble opinion that even if she gives you the best fellatio of your life that even men are not that shallow to forget their previous hatred and destruction. Yes Remington, even if she straddled you like a wench and you felt like a big puppy.

Bastante contenta.

Sequel to "Scandalous Again," which you should read first if you want to know why two cousins have switched places. Book 2 is actually the more luscious romance, but it is unfortunately built upon the double whammy of bad omens: a Big Deception by the heroine and a revenge scheme by the hero. That's problematic for me when I read romance, because I know there's a really ugly conflict coming, which makes it hard to enjoy the otherwise delightful first half of the story. Yes, hero will eventually relent and offer both love and forgiveness, and of course he'll realize he loves her when she's in danger. But in between the explosive truth and the HEA, I was nearly as miserable as the heroine. Would I have read it anyway? Hell YES! Christina Dodd's historical romances are my bodice-ripper treasures

What would Madeline do? That's what really runs through Eleanor's head. Pretending to be your aristocratic cousin isn't as easy as it sounds when you are a mouse. This is the second part to the Switching Places story. I want to explain my 2 star review. This book isn't bad. It just didn't keep my attention. The story was well written and cute with it's romance. It's just not a reread for me nor did I particular like the male lead.

I recommend this story to romance lovers who want their happily ever after and a male lead who is an asshole but turns to be a nice guy.

I got a bag full of romance novels from a friend who doesn't like them and I read most of them expecting to be bored silly. This was one of them. I didn't know this book was part of a series and it bugs me that I started with book two. I like to start at the beginning but it is exciting too because now I can find all the other books and read them as well. I know it will be worth it, Christina Dodd is an amazing writer.

A great story, with a superb heroine, who really finds herself when forced to match the hero, a man driven by revenge. I love the way this is a parallel story to the first of the two books, although I think I prefer the first - the steamy bits are perhaps less sensual in this book, and the hero was a stronger presence, although I found both extremely enjoyable.

In this sequel to Dodd's Scandalous Again, we get a follow-up episode regarding what happened to Madeline de Lacy's meek cousin Eleanor after she was foisted (in a way) onto Madeline's intended, Remington Knight.

So if you missed or forgot Book 1, here's the deal. Madeline de Lacy, duchess of Magnus, was promised in marriage to American businessman Remington Knight, after Madeline's father lost a card game to Knight. She goes on the trip to meet up with Knight, her cousin Eleanor in tow as an escort, but en route, Madeline comes up with this plan where Eleanor is to go on ahead and present herself as Madeline, while the real Madeline goes in disguise to another high stakes poker tournament to try to find a way to win back the family fortune her father lost. It's explained in the first book how the two look enough alike to often pass as siblings and often enough have been mistaken for each other, so she figures it's a solid plan. Madeline has every intention of Eleanor only being in this position temporarily, but as it often goes with these kinds of things, the plan in reality turns a lot more complicated than it went in Madeline's mind.

Unbeknownst to either Madeline or Eleanor, Remington is seeking revenge against the de Lacy family, so he knew exactly what he was doing going after Madeline. It is Remington's belief that Madeline's father is responsible for the demise of Knight's family; now Remington is set on taking down every de Lacy one at a time. He hears rumors that Madeline is bold and outspoken in nature, so he's looking forward to the challenge of "breaking" her. Imagine his surprise when "Madeline" arrives but instead of the expected strong-willed, spoiled snob he's looking to train down, he meets with Eleanor's (posing as Madeline) humble, kind, demure way of moving through the world. Remington is also thrown by her bookish tendencies... not something previously attributed to Madeline, as he understood. Regardless, he admits he's looking forward to seducing his beautiful bride-to-be... while also carrying out his revenge plot, of course.

Eleanor likewise comes into this meeting with preconceived notions of Mr. Knight. She's heard this Boston native described as an "American barbarian from the colonies"... but on first sight, her initial impression decides he is "hewn from rugged granite and adolescent dreams". Someone catch this girl, she's falling! LOL Still, she must keep her cool and ride this charade out just long enough for Madeline to arrive and come clean to Knight about all this. Until then.... she'll just have to dodge his questions about her repeatedly speaking in third person.

Madeline's aunt is called in as a chaperone for Eleanor until the wedding date. Knight might throw some sly looks his fiancee's way, maybe a naughty hand once in awhile, but for the most part he wants to keep things above board until the wedding night. But as you'll see, easier said than done with these two. Madeline's aunt naturally realizes it's really Eleanor from the start but for her own reasons she'll later explain, decides to keep mum about it. It's mentioned that Eleanor and Madeline's aunt are not related, so I'm guessing that means Eleanor is a cousin on the father's side?

Eleanor's anxiety doesn't end there. This poor girl spends the majority of the story in fear of having the secret revealed. During one ball, she figures her cover is blown for sure when she runs into a best friend of Madeline but soon realizes the girl won't stop talking long enough to notice it's not really Madeline she's speaking with! In several other moments, Eleanor has the repeated occurrence of people saying "so nice to meet you again", believing they are speaking with Madeline. Eleanor wonders if maybe she might actually pull this off! And then she comes face-to-face with her own evil stepmother. But here again is a relative who seems to have their own motives for going along with the ruse, at least for awhile.

The story in this sequel takes longer to get off the ground than its predecessor, but once again Dodd crafts a truly interesting and cute coupling. There's just the right amount of early dislike, mystery around Knight's background --- Dodd initially writes him as a bit of a thug type, but is he really? --- and there's good character development all around to boot! While Eleanor starts out as the meek, skittish push-over type, it is wonderful to see her find her backbone later in the story. Everyone has their "enough is enough!" line and I inwardly cheered to see a liberated Eleanor find hers. And funny thing, her bold, confident side ends up being a huge turn-on to Remington, much to his surprise! He spends all this time thinking he's going to love training his wife into this broken, submissive thing but sure enough having a woman call him out and say NO from time to time ends up being the unexpected aphrodisiac for him!

The ending was a bit sappy-sappy for my taste, but overall it was a nice wrap-up to the adventures of the de Lacy ladies. Fun, lighthearted escapism... no complaints here!

4 Estrellitas.

I spent the first third of this book being extremely creeped out by the love interest. I honestly have no clue what the author was trying to do with him. I’m okay with heroes that are cold, arrogant, and even huge misogynists that think they know everything. That said, I was getting major serial killer vibes from Remington. He kept making these cryptic comments that came off as extremely sinister. Plus, the parts where he . I swear, everything was a veiled threat from this guy. As I read on, this started to seem more like a horror movie/thriller than a love story. It got to the point where I was convinced he was going to off her for her money or keep her prisoner in his cellar. I thought Eleanor was deranged for even being attracted to him. She kept going on about how drawn to him she was and I couldn’t for the life of me understand why.

It got better towards the end, but I just couldn’t get into the relationship between Eleanor and Remington. Comparing them from the first page to the last, they were so radically changed and you never really got a sense of how they got there. It was like parts of the book had been edited out. One moment . The change of heart was too sudden to be believable.

Overall, I was not a fan. The murder conspiracy final showdown was kind of cheesy. Also, I thought Eleanor turned into a completely different person once she and Remington started getting it on. It didn’t fit in with who her character had been up until that point. I hated the entire harem thing and the constant references to the concubines’ teachings. I just wish that that whole aspect had been written out of the book because it was weird and off-putting to me.

One Kiss From You by Christina Dodd

After the Duke of Magnus wagers his daughter’s hand in marriage to cover a gambling debt, the future duchess is forced to resort to extraordinary measures to get herself out of the mess her dad created. Sending in her ‘identical’ cousin Eleanor to buy her a little time, Remington, her betrothed, is none the wiser. Determined to make break “Margaret,” the duchess, from her stiff aristocratic ways and arrogance, and make her bend to his every whim, Remington oozes with alpha dominance, American arrogance, and sex appeal that the shy, virginal Eleanor doesn’t know how to stand against. Eleanor’s gentle, quiet nature is not at all how Remington thought “Margaret” would be. She’s an enigma to him, and her very presence is altering plans he’s long since had in the works.

Feeling that there is more to Remington’s story than just wanting to marry a duchess, Eleanor keeps her eyes and ears open, hoping to find the true reason for his interest in marrying into their illustrious family. It is her hope that Margaret finds a way to end their upcoming nuptials and expose the switch before the wedding.

As old and new truths are revealed, each character is forced to reevaluate themselves and each other. Will they choose to stay stuck in their own ideas and stiff ways or will they flow with the way the winds are blowing, welcoming a new beginning?

This is a delightfully whimsical tale of love and romance sneaking upon two unsuspecting individuals. Despite Eleanor’s subdued nature, she is no pushover and her shows of power and fortitude are a treat. Dodd does an excellent job of fusing the realities of European aristocratic behavior, women who refuse to be stuck in a box, despite the era in which they were born, and the spicy love and romance a reader expects when choosing a book of this genre. Well done.

After a long visit to the continent, Eleanor de Lacy, cousin and companion to Madeline, Duchess of Magnus, masquerades for Madeline who has been lost in a marriage wager to Remington Knight, American entrepreneur. Eleanor is supposed to pose as Madeline and to stall the marriage until Madeline can arrive to deal with Mr. Knight. Mr. Knight has other plans, including tying ‘his duchess’ so closely to him that he can break her heart, embarrass her and her family, exacting revenge for the death and dishonor of his father and the death of his sister. He will also use her rank as an entre to the ‘ton.’

Eleanor falls in love with Remington quite quickly; she hasn’t had many opportunities in her life and her evil stepmother did a real job on her self-esteem. That is why Eleanor went to live with Madeline’s family; they could see what the nasty Lady Shapster was doing to Eleanor. Remington is also fascinated with ‘Madeline’ never believing he could fall for an enemy of his family.

Remington advances the wedding date, and Eleanor must decide whether to marry him for real or confess her impostering. Romantic drama, wrapped up neatly, with likeable characters and a not so believable story, well told. Recommended as an enjoyable, not exceptional read. Will leave readers still wanting more Dodd novels.

Started off really strong but quickly went downhill. I didn’t understand the h reason for trapping him into marriage. It was extremely selfish on her part and to try and justify it and place part of the blame on him. I couldn’t get past that. I wish the author would have taken a different direction with the book. I would have loved for the h to be found out and the H to continue on his course to marry the duchess only to realize he loved the h. I didn’t really feel any chemistry between the two other than physical.

That’s why it didn’t work. A lot of her better attributes are changed throughout the book because she is becoming bolder. But once the lie is revealed the H can’t help but to ask himself if the h was manipulating him all along. I thought the conclusion to all of his mistrust of her was completely glossed over. They came back from their honeymoon and everything was fine??? Ended up just skipping to the end because I lost interest. This could have worked with more character development.

One kiss from you

I would not have you continue in this reckless behavior.”
Once again, he confused her. “What reckless behavior?”
“Of not thinking of me.” Sliding his arm around her waist, he kissed her.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA i like this. Eleanor de Lacy pretended to be her cousin Madeline who was the duchess gambled by her father to Mr. Remington Knight. Alam mo iyong first meeting pa lamang nila, they're so smitten with each other by finding common ground sa books. There's some angsty lines too with the aftermath of pretension.
Pero I agree na she already wrapped him in her finger eh hahaha kahit she misled him, they were already married naman. Tapos doon sa fighting scene, super katuwa na she distracted the thugs by showing her legs tapos talagang pinagtanggol niya si koya HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Super cutie nila pls. May bonus pang lizzie the dog

I wish there was a 3 and 1/2 star rating. I like this book, it was entertaining and the dialogue was engaging. A Cinderella story is always enchanting. However, I had several problems with it. As the book cover states the main character has changed identities, however they often use the wrong name to describe her. I thought maybe it was when the other characters were giving their perspective, but it wasn't. It appeared to happen randomly. It may be a writing device to help the reader feel confused, but it just distracted me from the story. The underlying story that moves things along is far-fetched and convoluted. It just doesn't make sense. By the end there is another story introduced in very vague terms. Obviously, it's another book. It just left so many unanswered questions that I ended the book dissatisfied.

Remington wants a duchess and Eleanor wants to save her cousin Madeline. I enjoyed reading this because Eleanor is no cowering miss. She's a poor relation and knows what's in store for her. I thought Remington was nicely done even if he was hell bent on revenge. Even though the villain is not very developed, the overall pacing of the story is great. Will read more from this author.

The story had potential, because the reader is fairy early informed, that the hero is on a revenge mission. But as the story unfolds, the hero is left „toothless“ and bland.

The heroine was likable but still lacked personality.

The plot was somewhat interesting (the mystery of a murder, which happened 45 years ago, was solved) but did little to save the book for me.

1 star -💀💀💀

After reading Lisa Kleypas, Judith McNaught, and Julia Quinn's books I have realized that this book is just MEH.

The writing, execution, characters, dialogue, and pretty much everything does not pull through at all. I am so glad I got this for only 10 baht/ 20 cents so didn't consider it a huge loss lol...

DNF @ p.45
Very slow.
Heroine is impersonating her cousin who is female heir to a duchy that passes through the maternal line thanks to some quirk of Queen Elizabeth ages ago. This was hard enough to manage, but the entire time, the girl is referred to as "her grace" and the duchess, while her father is the current duke, so she isn't even a duchess yet. It was annoying.
