Onko kiihkeä rakkaus kyliin vahva nostamaan Jackin harteilta menneisyyden taakan?

I put off reading this one for a long time as I saw some low reviews for it. I ended up really liking it.

Carl Herbold has escaped from prison and he is heading back to Brewer County, hell bent on revenge. What a nasty character he was.

Born deaf, lately widowed, Anna Corbett fights to keep the ranch that is her son's birthright, unaware that she is at the center of Herbold's horrific scheme. She lives a solitary life, with her son and father-in-law.

But a handsome stranger arrives at the farm ...

JACK

Jack was a bit of a loner, a drifter, had been for a long time.

Jack Sawyer hadn't known much caring in his lifetime ... No-one had ever really cared for him.

ANNA

Some scenes were a bit gruesome. I can see how they could be off putting for some folks.

"Only the river knows the secret."

Plot and storyline were good. Romance and sex scenes not really to the fore.

To him her speech had looked like a graceful ballet, rife with emotion, convening her innermost thoughts and emotions, her fingertips acting as an extension of her soul.

I would have loved an Epilogue ... don't I always. I needed a bit more closure about certain aspects of the plot. But overall, a good, solid read.

Where were the awesome characterizations?
Where was the sexual tension?
Where was the suspense that kept my interest from the start?

*sigh*. It lacked pretty much everything I look forward to from Brown’s books, and the only twist that occurred in the end materialized out of nowhere. Not Brown’s best.

Big Penis = Twoo Luvvvv!

The second book I’ve read from this author and we’re 2-for-2 on a penis length conversation that occurs between the hero and the single mother heroine’s young son (“Hey, Ma? How come his thing is so ginormous?”) In both instances it was an awkward discussion that made me squirm even though I knew it wasn’t real; however, I would totally read another book by this author if only to determine whether this is part of her personal formula. And if not, maybe it should be because who wants to think about a romance novel hero who is hung like an ant?

Aside from that, I wasn’t totally into this story. Suspense was created by switching between different viewpoints:
--the sexy deaf heroine, and her father-in-law and son AND the mysterious new ranch hand with the thunder cock.
--the sociopathic Herbold brothers and their creepy albino friend.
--a retired sheriff who can’t settle down until the truth about a decades old case is finally solved.

Suspense was also created by alluding to connections that aren’t quite what they seem between all of the aforementioned characters. Except it never completely gelled for me, probably because it was too easy to guess the truth(s) before they were revealed which made all the attempted suspense-building drag. And given how detailed every other aspect of the book was I thought the “big reveal” in the last chapter was rushed and not totally resolved.

It kind of makes me wonder about the person who added this book in Listopia as one of the “Best Books Ever”.

This was my first experience with Sandra Brown's work and I was really excited about reading Unspeakable. The author jumps right into the plot, setting the stage for an action packed story of revenge, redemption, and second chances. There was so much potential! So why was it so difficult to get through? Let's start with the problems first, that way we can end on a positive note.

The main problem I had with the book surrounds the "evil" persona of the bad guys. With the exception of Myron's obvious detachment from reality, the villains could've been personality clones. This did improve a bit as the plot resolved, but I think the author could've given more distinguishable flaws from the beginning. Even the oily-banker was

WARNING: The following opinion contains adult material surrounding rape and sexual abuse.

The victim is only one in a long line of unnamed, walk-on characters that die by Carl and/or Myron's hand. Why go into such horrific, violent detail? Is this just shock factor? If so, congrats. Shock achieved. "Unspeakable" is about right.

Moving on to the good.

Yes! There was a lot of stuff to like in this book, too! It's a "three-in-one" story if you really think about it. Everyone is connected somehow to the Herbold brothers and the escape from prison sets them on a collision course. The final confrontation was intense and very well done. In fact, the last ten (or so) chapters were real page turners! Ms. Brown surprised me more than once!

The "good" guys were written so well and the author took the time to flesh out their personalities. I got to know retired sheriff Ezzy Hardage like an old friend. He became a favorite character from the early pages. Sometimes I just wanted to give the guy a hug. I spent those last ten chapters with my heart in my throat where he was concerned.

Jack's relationship with David (Anna's five-year-old son) was super endearing. He won me over right away, even if it did take Anna awhile to catch up and trust. His real reason for seeking employment at the Corbett ranch remains a big mystery right up to the end. It's obvious he's hiding something, but what and why? I liked that there were little clues dropped here and there as the story progressed, even though I missed most of them. When the author did the big reveal, it all made perfect sense.

I liked Anna and I don't mind reading deaf characters. I think it's a challenge to write a deaf character well and Brown does a great job here. I would've liked more scenes from her perspective, just so I could've had a better feel for Anna the individual, not the "mom" or the "daughter-in-law," etc. Once Anna and Jack get together, the relationship was so BEAUTIFUL. I just don't have the words! Sweet doesn't cover it. Deeply, emotionally intimate is about as close as I can get.

Overall, I think this is an okay read. The good definitely outweighs the bad, just be aware that the violence is far more graphic than the average romantic suspense novel. I definitely plan to give Sandra Brown another try. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Not my favorite Sandra Brown, that’s for sure. One of the reasons this book didn’t worked for me was that it took me forever to listen to it (I listened to the audiobook). I didn’t have many opportunities to listen, so I listened to small portions with long breaks between them. I think it took some pleasure from my reading experience. I prefer to read my romantic suspense quickly.

The next and more important reason is low suspense level. Romantic suspense is my guilty pleasure and I want to be entertained. I want steamy romance and fast paced, full of twists and turns plot.

Unfortunately, this book was lacking both. I prefer Sandra Brown’s recent books because there is a lot of suspense in them. In Unspeakable we know practically from the beginning who was the bad guy. Smash Cut comes to my mind; I had the same problem with it. I haven’t read The Crush but from what I gathered from the blurb and reviews I’ll probably have the same complaints. I like when the author keeps me in darkness and makes me suspect everyone.

There was a second storyline about the murder of a girl which took place 20 years ago. But it didn’t keep me interested either. The big revelation in the end was out of the blue and at this point I was so bored I didn’t care.

Also there were several graphic and violent scenes, which in my opinion were unnecessary.

As for the romance there was little of it. While there were several steamy scenes, which Sandra Brown had written with her usual skill, I wanted more of Jack and Anna.

Though I didn’t like Unspeakable I’m still a fan of Sandra Brown and I’m going to read her books. Not every book by your favorite author will work for you. This is just a proof of that.

The heroine is deaf. She surprises our hero who had preconceived notions about the deaf. Contemorary romance.
So many hearing authors put in a deaf character in their work and get it wrong. There is not a deaf person who will read past the term, "deaf and dumb," Or "deaf mute." Since there are more of us than the hearing think, that is a lot of readers to lose!!!
Applauds to Sandra Brown for getting it right!

Overall rating: 4.5 stars!

Triggers:
Cheating:
Love triangle:
Sex with om/ow:
Intimate pasts:
Push/pull:
OM/OW drama:

HEA:

I have to tell you, until I got to the revelations at the end, this was one of my favorite SB books. The hero was perfection. There were no ow or om and it was single parent - which is a favorite of mine if you know me :) Anyways, towards the end, we find out more details regarding Jack's past and I guess because the ENTIRE book I had him at this high pedestal, that when I found out some of his past, I was kind of disappointed in him. Granted - it all took place over 22 years ago - he was young and naive and had a troubled past. I think I would have done better knowing those details earlier on so that he would have had the entire book to just be perfect and make up for it, not the other way around. Usually I like the way SB writes and having the plot uncover over time and shed light into the story. In this case that worked out with everything, but learning about Jack's past.

I won't spoil it for anyone and it has nothing to do with not being "safe" or triggers, it was just a let down from the perfection that I knew was the hero.

Overall it was a great book and I would definitely recommend it to others.

This was a reread for me and I loved it this time as much as I did the first time I read it. It's a great romantic suspense with it being heavier on the suspense than romance.

Anna (h) is a widow with a young son living on her father in laws ranch in Texas. She had married the man she loved and was ready to have her HEA, and then he joined the army. She supported this decision and stood by him through it all. When he came home from Dessert Storm he was one who came down with the mysterious illness that plagued so many soldiers, Anna was with him till the end. He died without ever knowing his son David.
So now Anna (who is also deaf) is raising her son and staying on the ranch in Texas that is her son's legacy.

Carl Herbold and Myron Hutts are two of the worst of the worst bad guys that you can imagine. Carl has one thought and one thought only.....to break out of prison and get the revenge on his stepfather and everyone else he holds responsible for his being in prison. He knows he needs to bring Myron with him, he's his muscle and he never questions anything that Carl tells him to do. Once they break out they will hook up with Carl's brother Cecil and then look out Texas the Herbold brothers are on their way!

Jack (H) has been a drifter for most of his life, working here and there for a time and then picking up and moving on. He's an easy going cowboy that nobody really knows much about. When he hears that Carl Herbold has escaped prison he doesn't think twice, he knows he has to go to Texas and make sure that the people there are protected against the Herbolds. He knows what they are capable of and he risks exposure of his own sorted past but none of that matters as long as he can protect Anne and her young son from harm.

This was a much more of a suspense than a romance though the romance that builds between Anna and Jack is really sweet. I loved Jacks character, at risk to himself he shows up to protect people that he doesn't know. He's great with David, Anna's 5 year old son. The scenes with between them are great. The one thing that some might want a warning about before reading this story is that the bad guys are REALLY bad, when they escape prison they go on a killing spree and the reader follows them, it can be hard to read for some.

This wasn’t like other Sandra Brown books that I’ve read. Usually there is a good mystery that quite often keeps me on the edge of my seat. I would classify this one mostly a drama with a slow burning mystery going on in the background. What this one does have are some great characters that I enjoyed getting to know. There are also the despicable lowlifes that are a must to keep things moving. One character, a drifter named Jack Sawyer, reminded me so much of Jack Reacher that I pictured him the same as I do the Reacher books. There’s also a young boy named David that I pictured as Tate from Yellowstone. He’s so inquisitive, he just warmed my heart. His mother, Anna, is deaf and I feel like Brown had to do extensive research into sign language and the process of a person being deaf and trying to learn to speak. I know nothing of sign language beyond the middle finger, but this book really gave me a better understanding of the things a deaf person must go through. This was overall a very good book and the momentum picks up as it progresses and I was completely satisfied by the end. I would recommend!

A vivid running dark movie, a picture show on fast forward also it’s a crazy wild, wild ride in every turn of the pages. of life’s true realities, of , passions, hurts ,wants desires& pains, With much healings be gain .Only love can break its evil chains

Last call …adrenaline junkies! Here ya go this one for you!
I wouldn’t be surprised that any average Joe would be well entertained with this book. Furthermore, the flow of the storyline has a feel of unisex appeal .
Better yet in fact, I think this story was design to be shared, as a gift that would be appealing & enjoyed with a significant other.

Unspeakable is by far most satisfying, terrifying, & suspenseful chock-filled with love & hopeful happy endings. This Read will thoroughly appease some appetites. This book’s brilliance reads for me, in some what, present modern time or past setting. While listening to this Read I was taken up carried rapturous away by some superb writing. My interaction with this Read felt like virtue Reality. Believe you me when I say it reminds me of my visit to Disneyland I took part in at Epcot center “Honey I Blew Up The Audience” journey was interesting, fun entertaining with turns twists & ooh goodness what’s gonna happen next. suspense…?!! OOH boy…then I had some yippee..& there were some...wild n dark times.

I’m scared out of my mind when out of the screen popped a lion’s head, with a ear death roar that then instantly turns into a cobra snake literally snapped at me. It was real life in your face(3 D mine you!) I also was so amazed ,happbeeeee giddy with excitement elations.awwww ya gotta love em..(the father:O) Then the father put a white mice in the duplicating machine that in turn follows with the most over abundance flow upon dozens of mice that spewed out . The mice proceed to scurry fast forward crazy wild off the screen & ran all out all over my feet..Eeeeeek..that giddiness was short lived by terrifying screams & suspenseful( finding the door fast) a mad dash to the nearest exit. I was such a Winnee.((giggle))!

Gee wiz I, Betcha by gollee wow, Ms. Brown writing brings out that similar wild kind of excitement & terror soooo miraciously..from ya. This experience definitely is mind blowing .A sensual flow that extremely takes over your mind also it’s what feeds your senses, the see, feel, touch & hear. Of it all. Its suspenseful then becomes intensely eerie-like dark .

Now that’s modern classic now a day’s fashion. A lot of people live for. To be able to grace fans one & all alike with, is great! By popular demand there’s an endless need for that kind of writing. The villains were such icky creepy crawly slugs U loved to hate with a passion. It was good to know that evil shall Never prevail over good. live by the sword die by the sword!

I never lost sight of the hero & heroine in all the craziness that went on within the story the budding love that took root, ground& gradually grew but eventually then came to full bloom. While listening casting my observation to the wind I viewed Jack Sawyer /Ann Corbets love. It’s what kept me interested & glued to the story. My kind of theme I like .A hero that is consider a nobody too many but is much more. A hero that only needs a second chance at life & loves healing touch. These R some of the many themes I love to read soooo much. Secondly, I find it refreshing reading about Heroines that aren’t perfect as apposed to this heroine .

She was handicap she had a cute kid. It was a big plus that she is a independent woman. I won’t say anything else about Unspeakable other than that it’s like finding a diamond in the rough.. Lastly, what’s more pleasant than stealing away into a secret hideaway, a virtue Reality of sorts whether at home, in your car or on the bus.

Unspeakable either on Audio or paper book it’s indulgement until your hearts content, prepare yourself for love, passion also non-stop fast pace action.

4.5 stars - Another amazing read that had me enthralled all the way through! Brown is such a master at manipulating characters and readers alike...running them through a tangled, twisted maze of plot lines and then dropping a bomb shell on them near the end! I was left speechless once again at a surprise reveal at the last minute. While I'm often able to follow the clues that are sprinkled throughout her books, I'm seldom ever able to figure out "who done it" until the end. Another Page Burning Must Read by a Suspense Master!

I LOVE Sandra Brown but wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

This is the creepiest book I've ever read.

To be in Carl's mind as he murdered and raped his way around was disgusting. I can deal with bad things happening in books but I didn't need to be in the bad guy's head while they happened. He was vulgar. Blehhh

Also multiple characters talked about "sharing women" and "taking their turn". Ew, just ew.

Don't read it

Style and Language
Sandra Brown´s thriller Unspeakable was published in 1998 and according to that is the language and ethics of it.

For the author means that, her language is kind of soft although some figures use a very blunt way of expressing themselves.

Anna is deaf-mute and lives with her son and father-in-law at a ranch a bit outside of the small town Brewer. Their quiet life becomes turned around when the criminal Carl Herbold flies out of prison and makes his bloody and brutal way across the country to Brewer.

Sandra Brown unfolds here a family drama where convenience, hate, passion and betrayal are close together. A murder, dated back some 20 years, becomes again very important. The figural narrative situation is told sometimes from Anna´s side, where the reader gets to know her thoughts and sometimes from Jack, the man who seems to be a stranger.

Characters
A man who likes to be unknown, a father-in-law who has a secret passion and a young woman who uses her physical status as an excuse for everything – those and some other figures let this thriller become the typical drama that the author liked to write in her early years as a writer.

The family values, the life on a ranch in Texas outside a typical American town and the ethical values give the reader a good picture about living without the technical progress that we´re having today. Men are the guardian of women, the ones who save the town from evil and the ones who are strong etc. etc. etc. In my eyes a bit old-fashioned, but in the nineties it was the usual thing.

Result
If you like to go back to the nineties and into the life of a small town, then this thriller should be what you´re looking for.

This book is definitely not for the faint of heart, not so much horror gruesome but rape gruesome. I know that throws a lot people off coming from a female writer but I commend Mrs. Brown taking those kind of chances in her books. This wasn't my favorite book by her but I still enjoyed the read.

This book is definitely not romance. I'm saying this because I see that most users tagged it as such. I would even go as far as to say that the main characters are not Anne and Jack but the psychopaths on the run Carl and Myron. There are many graphic descriptions of their killings, raping and torturing because the author forces you to live them through their POVs - and there are too many.

These vivid descriptions of raping teens put Anne and Jack into the background so they seemed like supporting characters. Jack especially, he felt like an one-dimensional character all along until the end when we find out about All of that seemed just too bizarre for me to take seriously.

Other than that it is a nicely written grimdark thriller, if you're into that stuff.

2.5 stars. Strange book ~ part romance, part mystery, and part suspense set on a cattle ranch with a drifter showing up to help a young boy, his beautiful deaf mother and his gruff grandfather.

I was put off by the unrequited lust in the book, but I was willing to suspend my belief about the possibility of romance. The startling ending soured me on the entire book.

Sandra Brown wrote on of my favorite books, "Envy" as well as several others and reading her books is always a place I find myself going back to from time to time. Unspeakable was interesting, particularly her writing about a deaf woman. I always love when writers write about something a little different than your typical characters (the ugly duckling who turned beautiful, the beautiful one running away from someone, someone with emotional baggage). This was about a widowed deaf woman with a young son, who has a great talent for photography. I thought the research on the deaf that went into this book was great as it talked about differences in sign language (but not at nausium) and it showed the human side and issues that go with it.

Now the scary brothers and their sidekick that involved with a prison break along their antics were a little too over the top for my taste. Also, the storyline of the retired cop who couldn't let the death a young woman from 20 plus years ago and what happened to her were just too much for me.

Still it was pretty interesting, but didn't hold the same element of mystery, suspense and romance that she can do so brilliantly.

Like always a heart thumping ride! David's sweet innocence, Anna's silent communication, Jack's painful rotten past, ezzy's passion for his job all adds to this roller coaster ride. This story by Sandra Brown has much more emotional quotient than any of her other books i ve read so far, maybe so coz of Anna's deafness.
Just one sore point of Delray's feelings for Anna, why was that angle required? Couldn't it have been pure relationship?

Here's the companion binge piece to Brown's other book w/a deaf character.
This one was a later book by the writer with her more known suspense romance format.
And as per Brown's style, she saves a few twists for the end.
Anna & Jack had good chemistry. I also thought the writer did a great job of making the kid adorable & believable. Yep..boys are well boys...and lots of kids are chatterboxes...
And again, I liked reading about how someone with a disability adapts.
The negative is that the crimes were violent & while not extremely explicit it was enough to build a terrible picture.
