“Agents assemble!”
I have always loved girl detective books so when I learned of Zaiba’s existence I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go sleuthing with her. This book is absolutely adorable and even though I’ve only just finished reading about her first case I’m ready to help her solve the next one.

Zaiba is attending her favourite cousin’s pre-wedding Mehndi party at the Royal Star Hotel. Samirah (Sam) will be marrying Tanvir and Zaiba’s family are celebrating together, with food, music and dancing. Zaiba’s best friend, Poppy, is enjoying the fashion and free food and Zaiba’s cousin/nemesis, Mariam, is no doubt scheming up some trouble.

Zaiba longs to be a detective and uses her favourite book, Eden Lockett’s Detective Handbook, as a training manual. Solving mysteries runs in her family; Aunt Fouzia runs the Snow Leopard Detective Agency in Pakistan and was the one who introduced Zaiba to the Eden Lockett mystery books. It isn’t long before Zaiba, Poppy and Zaiba’s younger half-brother, Ali, are investigating their own case.
description
While I appreciated Zaiba’s determination and attention to detail, it was Ali I wanted to learn more about. Rather than simply being the cliché little brother tagging along on an adventure, Ali holds his own, using his incredible memory for facts and penchant for maths to shine a light on clues that others may overlook.
All good detectives make notes.
I always enjoy searching for clues myself as I read detective stories and I found myself highlighting key words and sentences as I peeked over Zaiba’s shoulder. There are clues which will help readers solve the mystery themselves if they pay attention to the details.

I want to learn more about Aunt Fouzia and Zaiba’s mother during future investigations. Mariam also intrigues me; she has the potential for an interesting character arc, one I hope will see her become an integral part of the team (fingers crossed). I’m keen to discover the true identity of Eden Lockett; I have my suspicions but will keep those to myself for now.

I loved Daniela Sosa’s illustrations and had trouble choosing a favourite, so I’ve chosen two. While this one captures the spirit of adventure and the determination of the trio solving the mystery,

You can be anything you want to be.
This book highlights the importance of teamwork and how the support and encouragement of family and friends can give a child the courage they need to follow their dreams and face their fears.
A good agent always ensures the safety of her friends.
There are some fun bonuses at the end of the book, including an extract from one of Eden’s books and some handy tips for detectives in training. I really enjoyed learning more about Mehndi parties and deciphering the coded messages. I’m currently preparing my membership application for the Snow Leopard Detective Agency.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Stripes Publishing, an imprint of Little Tiger Group, for the opportunity to read this book.

Middle-grade mysteries are always so cute. Make it desi and I’m giving away my entire heart. After recently reading A Mystery at Lili Villa , I knew I needed more young detectives on my shelf and picking up this series starter was the best decision.

Zaiba is an aspiring detective, looking up to her aunt who runs a detective agency in Karachi, Pakistan. When some diamonds go missing at her cousin’s Mehendi (a pre-wedding celebration) the fun of food, dance, and music deflates. With a passion to solve this mystery and with the help of a detective handbook, Zaiba, accompanied by Poppy and Ali—her best friend and half-brother, respectively—begin their investigation.

A trio where everyone brings something unique to the table, clues that actually pull the readers into the excitement of finding an answer, and illustrations that bring certain adventurous scenes to life: all of it makes this a delightful read, especially the inclusion of empathy and the subtle teachings of simple lessons for young readers.

Sometimes what you really need to read is a middle-grade mystery story. Good news! Because this is exactly that.

The Missing Diamonds is the first in a new detective series, about Zaiba, a keen crime-solver, her best friend Poppy, and her little brother Ali. While at a hotel for her cousin’s Mehndi party, Zaiba and co. end up embroiled in a mystery when a pop star’s dog goes missing, and with it, diamonds.

The best thing about this book is that it’s just a lot of fun, really. It’s short, covers only a few hours in a day plotwise, and it’s a nice break from heavier plots. The characters are great and, yeah so you can spot the reveal a mile off, it’s an enjoyable mystery (also I prefer mysteries where you can at least follow the evidence and guess who did it. I mean, isn’t that the whole point of them?). If my cousins were still the age where I could shove middle grade books at them, I absolutely would with this one.

So basically, if you want a break from everything, and a quick fun read, this book is the one for you.

This is a wonderful middle grade book where the main character wants to be a detective and it is perfect for fans of Nancy Drew.

Before I share my review can we take a moment to appreciate the cover because there is a young Pakistani girl in salwar kameez ON THE COVER. Kid me is jumping for joy right now!

I loved this book so much from all the Pakistani culture that was front and centre with a whole pre-wedding celebration and filled with all the beautiful traditions of a mehndi. The food, clothes and what happens at a mehndi was woven so seamlessly into the story and I loved seeing that. That my culture is in a book and it is celebrated and there is no judgement or hatred. I loved it so much.

The story focus on Zaiba, a young girl who is an aspiring detective and looks up to her aunt who runs a detective agency in Karachi. I loved that her aunt is also a detective and runs her own agency, she has a great role model to look up to who understands her dreams and goals in life. I loved the relationship between them both and how she listened and believed in her.

The story in which Zaiba, her brother and her best friend have to find out who stole the diamonds and why was really interesting and I loved how the three of them worked together and also knew each others strengths and worked accordingly. I loved how brave they were despite being so young and so resourceful. Their curiosity and intuition was so great to see and that it was nurtured! They had such a great friendship and sibling relationship and I am so looking forward to seeing more of them three together in the next book. The actual mystery itself was really fun and I loved reading and trying to work out the clues with the trio I loved how it was so much more elaborate than I initially thought and I loved that.

It’s definitely a book that kids will love. From the fun setting to the great mystery to keep them intrigued and the wonderful friendships and a main character who knows what they want to achieve and does her best to achieve it. I love this book and definitely recommend it for kids and adults alike! I cannot wait to dive into book two!

This book was a recommended to me by a good friend on twitter back in December and I got to know it was up for request on netgalley. My request got accepted and I started the book in the month of Feb. I have been reading diverse books since quite a while and this book is Muslim rep and instantly piqued my interest.

I also love reading middle grade books but I have a never read middle grade with a mystery solving story. Agent Zaiba Investigates: The missing diamonds is now in my "one of the best middle grade" books list.

These kids Zaiba, Ali and Poppy are such geniuses. I was amazed at their detective skills. I loved the graphics in this book. Literally, graphics are my weakness🤭😆. The mystery was mind-blowing by the way and the minute details that these kids noticed ... AHH all of it kept me on edge.

Anyways, other than these 3, I loved the characters of Zaiba's parents, her Aunt fouzia who's a detective and has her own agency. Also her daughter Sam. The fact that this whole story takes place in the course of 1 day was just awesome. The edden locket books mentioned in this story sound so intriguing. Am definitely gonna read those.

Thank you so much to the author for writing this wonderful middle grade mystery. Can't wait for more books by you.

Murder Most Unlady-lite (in a good way)

This is going to be great for those younger readers (7-9) who want to start series like MMU but are too young.

This is a fun crime novel, with action and adventure - but it’s not so scary and there’s no violence (I get asked for mystery books like this all the time at work, so if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ve found it).

This book also has a strong minded female lead. She’s part of a Pakistani Family, and the book celebrates and dived into her culture.

Occasionally the book is a bit too on the nose, but otherwise is really charming, and fun.

- I received an ARC of the second book in this series from NetGalley so I figured I should probably pick up this first book. I was mainly interested because it's a middle grade mystery which is my favourite genre (as most people now know). There was nothing really wrong with this book, it just wasn't really for me. I find it read a bit too young for my tastes.

This is a book for the young ones, but if you love a good mystery, I am sure that no matter your age you’ll love this book!
First of all, I want to say thanks to Stripes Books to give me this book proof, it’s out of my comfort zone, but I loved the idea of a young girl British Pakistani. I am so glad that the young ones can start reading about different cultures on their books and that the main character is not always a boy! I loved mysteries when I was young, but the main character was always a boy and quite old compared to me, this is perfect for the ones that are starting to read!
This is a complex and interesting story, with some clues for the little readers to discover the mystery before Zaiba knows who stole the missing diamonds! But this story is much more than a simple mystery, is an insight to a Mehndi party, a pre-wedding celebration in Hindu and Sikh culture where the bride has the red-orange Mehndi “stain” applied to her palms, back of hands, and feet. The three friends Zaiba, Poppy and Ali (Zaiba’s little brother) will investigate this case as true detectives overtaking their worst fears and facing the consequences when they know they behaved badly.
There’s also some mystery with Zaiba’s mother, how did she die? Was she also a detective? This will make any little one eager to know more about it and search for the new story of Zaiba, which I really hope we will not have to wait much! And of course the illustrations created by Daniela Sosa will make the little one to make the story more real. There are some activities at the end of the book, to keep the waiting less painful and the little readers understand more the story.
I am really happy to have discovered this series, I’ll introduce it to my little one soon, mystery books are the best ones, don’t you think?

What really drew me to this book was Agent Zaiba herself - a young Pakistani protagonist whose passion for mystery and crime is what connects her to her cultural roots.

The shocking statistics of the lack of BAME characters in children's books was enough for to want to put the brilliant Agent Zaiba and her investigations into the hands and hearts of every child. So refreshingly timely is this book that I found myself immediately absorbed into the story of a dynamic trio of detectives and their mission to solve the case of the missing diamonds.

Led by determined Zaiba, and joined by her little brother Ali and sidekick and best friend Poppy, Annabelle Sami has created three wildly intelligent and unique characters who when combined make one superb team. Highlighting the importance of teamwork, courage and encouragement, young readers will enjoy navigating hidden staircases and mysterious mazes in this well crafted na

This is a 4⭐read. Fun middle grade mystery with plucky #BAME characters. Agent Zaiba Investigates: The Missing Diamonds by Annabelle Sami is the first in what I hope is the start of a new representative series. A family party at a country hotel leads to the intrepid trio of Ziaba, best friend Polly and brother Ali on the case of a missing dog. Team work and detective skills result in a satisfying conclusion.

Agent Zaiba Investigates is such a fantastic positive and fun detective mystery story and is an exciting and bright read with illustrations throughout in black and white too which is wonderful!

Agent Zaiba Investigates follows a classic detective style but within a contemporary setting following clues, finding signs and puzzling over red herrings even coming to the classic denouement where the characters gather in one room to unveil the culprit! But without the murder aspect of older mysteries making it accessible and enjoyable for younger or more sensitive readers.
It’s also fantastic to see a British-Pakistani heroine being an absolute star and a detective role model for children regardless of heritage as my own daughter thoroughly enjoyed this book, but extra special for those who do see themselves in Zaiba and her family.

I was lucky to get a Netgalley Arc of a new Middle Grade mystery series called Agent Zaiba Investigates written by Annabelle Sami and with the wonderful illustrations by Daniela Sosa this book was a very good debut for a new series. We find Zaiba, her brother Ali, and best friend Poppy staying at Hotel for her cousin's Mehndi and wedding where some diamonds go missing and this is the first case for Zaiba and her friends. I found this book very action packed and loved how the friends interacted with each other and how they worked as a team. I also love the message that this book conveys that even though Zaiba, Poppy and Ali are not only kids but they are clever detectives too. I have got the 2nd book in the series to review but I also have ordered a physical copy as I do love a mystery and this series in my view is going to be very successful. For this reason I am giving 4 stars

This story is about Zaiba a young Secret Agent who uncovers the identity and theft of a VIP guest, whilst attending her cousin's pre-wedding party in a hotel. Her best friend Poppy and her younger half-brother Ali help her.
I like the relatable characters, how it's written, the dialogues, the descriptions and there are pictures. I also like the content with having a young Pakistani girl as being the lead, which would be great for young female readers, possibly Year 3 +.
The Kindle version that I got wasn't a good copy as I wasn't able to read it properly and for that reason I would've given less stars but I was able to download the PDF version, which is much better.

This book was so much fun. Zaiba wants to be a detective, so when a dog escapes and his diamond collar goes missing, she and her friend and brother investigate. Dog related chaos ensues! And eventually the solving of the mystery. As well as the great story, the book is peppered with fun illustrations and delightful patterns at the start of each chapter.

I’d definitely recommend this book to children, as well as any adults who enjoy a light hearted mystery. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next book in the series.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Finally a middle grade mystery not set in the 20s-40s! Excellent! Plus this was so lovely and fun. I adored Zaiba’s detective work, with her team of fab helpers! Her attention to detail was awesome!

Plus I loved how it blended Pakistani tradition into the story.

The mystery itself was the right mix of possible to solve (especially for a kid!) and intriguing, and I liked the motivation behind it.

I will definitely be on the look out for the sequel to this :)

An adorable middle-grade detective story. The three main characters - Zaiba, Poppy and Ali - are all wildly different and intelligent in their own ways that combine to create an interesting team dynamic. The highlighted multicultural family is a great addition, as well as the overly pure enjoyment of supporting your family with their dreams. The actual mystery was simple but entertaining, following the same beats of the usual detective story - just with the additions of curfews!

A great adventure, and I liked the way that even the unpleasant characters in the story had consideration of the "why" of their behaviour by the main character. The empathy was a wonderful inclusion, and I look forward to finding out how Zaiba's relationship with her "arch nemesis" develops in the next book

This engaging and fun early middle grades detective story set in England, features a female protagonist of Pakistani origin who stumbles on a crime at her cousins mehndi party. Over 231 pages with illustrations and flourishes, Agent Zaiba along with her younger half brother Ali and best friend Poppy will have to solve a case, avoid a nosy cousin, try not to ruin their clothes and so much more while stuffing their pockets with samosas and pakoras, and making sure they make it back for all the traditional events as well. There is nothing Islamic in this culture rich book, but with names like Fouzia, Samirah, Tanvir, Mariam, Maysoon, and Hassan, Muslim children or readers with sub continent familiarity, will feel an immediate reflection of themselves in the story. I have no idea what religion the author identifies as either, but from what I can Google, it seems to be an OWN story book and the richness and integrity of the minor details would suggest first hand knowledge. Anyone looking to see a strong minority female lead with good friends, an open mind, and impressive sleuthing skills, should hold on tight as the agents assemble to get to the bottom of a theft and save the day for a beloved cousin.

SYNOPSIS:

Zaiba idolizes her Aunt Fouzia who is a real detective and owner of the Snow Leopard Detective Agency in Karachi, Pakistan. Aunt Fozia’s daughter Samirah is getting married and with the Eden Lockett mystery books Zaiba inherited from her mom when she passed away, this party at The Royal Star Hotel is the perfect venue to test out her observation skills and other lessons she has learned from devouring the famous books.

When Zaiba, Ali, and Poppy learn that there is a VIP guest staying in the same hotel, the team gets a chance to explore the hotel and find out who the guest is. What starts out innocently enough quickly elevates when a secret staircase is discovered, the VIP’s dog is set off his leash, and a jewel encrusted dog tag goes missing. The three kids work together and set off to find the dog that has terrified Sam and ruined her mehndi, once that is done, the stakes get higher as Maysoon explains that the good luck charm is not just expensive, but a lucky token she needs to move her career from singing and hosting, to acting. As the children work to find the diamonds and work their way through the list of suspects at the hotel, they have to make sure not get in too much trouble for missing key events of their cousins big day and getting in trouble with the tattling cousin Mariam.

WHY I LIKE IT:

I love that it is really for younger readers, second through early fourth grade, and shows the fun bits of a culture to a larger audience without being daunting. I love the idea of a mehndi as a back drop for a whodunit, seriously, it has the perfect energy and vibe. The family is amazingly supportive, Zaiba has a step mom, Jessica, that she adores, and a half brother that she loves. Aunt Fouzia and Sam encourage Zaiba to go solve the crime and give her respect when she does her big reveal to the police. It really is empowering to see the grown ups support. I love that Zaiba grows even in such a limited time as she learns about her mom and we even see Zaiba’s heart soften for Mariam.

Maysoon is a celebrity that is really flat and weak and whiney, at the end she shines a bit, but I really felt she was lame and under developed. I’m not sure what a champagne reception is, but the fact that Maysoon is having one would suggest she isn’t Muslim, not sure, I guess I’ll have to keep searching for clues.

The end of the book has a whole section to test the reader if they have what it takes to join the Snow Leopard Detective Agency: an excerpt from Eden Lockett’s book, her detective tips, things to practice, code writing, and info about the Agency, including Aunt Fozia’s record amounts of chai consumed.

FLAGS:

There is lying and stealing, it is a mystery after all, and the presence of champagne, both as part of the mystery solving and at the celebrity’s celebration.

TOOLS FOR LEADING THE DISCUSSION:

I don’t think I’d do it as a book club book, because there wouldn’t be a lot to discuss. I do, however, plan to suggest and gift the two book series to some young mixed ethnic Pakistani girls I know that would love to see a strong desi girl in the lead.

4.5. This was so delightful! I had so much fun reading it. Just to set expectations, the complexity of this mystery is more on the younger end of middle-grade. I thought it was wonderfully done. The narrative is completely focussed on investigation, following Zaiba, Ali and Poppy as they explore a grand hotel inside and out trying to solve a mystery. The hotel itself provides a great backdrop for the plot; it really captured the excitement of being a kid in such a place, when you feel safe but also like everything is a new adventure. It was also cool to see glimpses of the Mehndi party (the reason why Zaiba and her family are at the hotel in the first place). The ending was superb with a satisfying resolution to the mystery and some really sweet final scenes.

Zaiba was an excellent MC. I love how seriously she took her detective work, and how her passion for it was inspired by her aunt and ummi. She was so kind to her fellow detectives, making sure they received encouragement and credit, and in that way was a great leader. She was brave and driven and positive, and I really loved how she got to achieve her dream during this novel. Ali and Poppy were great side characters. I liked how dynamic they were, Ali being courageous and grumpy and a walking encyclopaedia, Poppy being giddy and carefree and a logical, systematic thinker. They were all so supportive of one another and made a great team.

One of my favourite elements of this book was how it portrayed family. So many different types of relationships were shown and they were all so sweet and carefully characterised. Zaiba and Ali had a sibling relationship, and I loved how she valued and included her brother instead of treating him like an inconvenient third wheel. Zaiba and Sam had a cousin relationship and it was so cute how much Zaiba looked up to her and wanted to make her Menhdi party go smoothly. I appreciated that Zaiba’s dad gave Zaiba space to love her ummi and ask questions about her, and how Jessica was such a good step-mum without trying to replace Zaiba’s ummi. Finally, I loved how Zaiba’s aunt nurtured Zaiba’s passion for being a detective, encouraging her and helping her achieve her dreams.

I can’t wait to read the second book in the series!

Review Taken from The Pewter Wolf Reads as part of NetGalley November 2020.

***eProof given by UK publisher, Stripes, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review/reaction***

At her cousin, Sam’s, Mehndi party, Zaiba gets her first mystery: who is the mystery VIP staying at the same hotel. With the help of her best friend, Poppy, and her little brother, Ali, Zaiba puts her sleuthing skills to the test. But when the celebrity’s dog goes missing, along with its priceless diamond collar, it’s up to the trio to save the day. But are they up to the task?

This is a middle grade mystery (probably on the younger side of middle-grade) but this was an utter joy to read. It was so much fun! I devoured this in one day and just loved it. It gave me strong vibes of Murder Most Unladylike meets The Worst Witch (I have no idea why my brain combined the two and went “That’s what this is!”).

This is a fun crime mystery with action, adventure, friendship and huge rep as most of the characters in this book are British Pakistani. Nothing violent or scary and might be a bit easy/on-the-nose for older middle-grade readers, but this is such fun and cute and I loved it!

I had such fun reading this and I can’t wait to find time and read the sequel, Agent Zaiba Investigates - The Poison Plot!

The Missing Diamonds (Agent Zaiba Investigates #1) by Annabelle Sami

Three Word Review: Sleuth; Mehndi; Introduction

Sleuth

‘Sleuth’ because the ‘Agent Zaiba’ series is part of my absolute favourite genre – the girl sleuth. And ‘sleuth’ because the book is written in such a way that the reader can become a real detective themselves and pick up the breadcrumbs of clues to solve this delightful whodunnit.

Mehndi

‘Mehndi’ because the action all takes place during Zaiba’s cousin Sam’s Mehndi party. It is an unusual device to have all the action take place in such a tight time constraint, but it really works - it gives the book an immediacy that keeps the narrative trotting along. I also loved the fact that the book has a female Pakistani British lead protagonist, something that shouldn’t be as unusual as it is. The Mehndi is a great way to introduce us not only to Zaiba and sidekicks (best friend Poppy, and younger brother Ali), but also the wider extended family.

Introduction

‘Introduction’ because this is the first in a series that is well worth getting into. But, also, ‘Introduction’ because the Agent Zaida Investigates series is a great introduction into the girl sleuth genre. It is aimed at slightly younger readers than is usual for this this genre and I have already bought it for a young family member in the hope this will spark her own love of girl sleuths.

What three words would you choose?

I like that this book shows South East culture and I think this is why the book is so different compared to other mystery.

I liked chapter 2 as the investigation starts and you get to find more details about the hotel and the mystery celebrity.

I liked the description of each location and characters as it brings the story to life.

I enjoyed the chase to catch Reberto and how much damage one dog can do. I like that Zaiba is trying to find Reberto to make up for him recking the mehndi party.

I liked that the audience get to find out why Zaiba likes Eden Locket s books because of her mum.

I liked that Zaiba found Reburto and was able to meet Maysoon and got to talk to her.
I like that Zaiba,Ali and Poppy have started to work out who was the suspect in chapter 12.

I found it a shock when one of the suspect, Georgia was knocked out after being hit by a champagne cork.

However because of the champagne cork accident Zaiba was able to link evidence together and reveals some unexpected information.

I liked that Zaiba's auntie believed her and then confirms she is a secret agent.

A five star read!

First of all, the plot- that was great. I loved how there's a Mehndi party, but then also at the same time, a famous pop-star's dog goes missing, and from there Zaiba has to find it, and it's collar.

I liked the characters too. I felt that Zaiba and her best friend Poppy were quite similar in personalities, but it is easily seen that they are also different, as Poppy loves fashion. I liked Zaiba's little brother, Ali. It's funny how he likes his hoodie so much and wants to wear it to the party. He's also really clever too! I think that together they make a great team.

There's also a nice bonus at the end of the book, where it gives you tips on how to become a better detective, finding fingerprints and secret codes.

This book is perfectly suitable for any reader. Despite it being a mystery/crime book, there is no violence, and is very fun as well. Highly recommended!

This is such a cute, fun mystery. The Secret Seven/Famous Five/Nancy Drew for the modern generation! I love Zaiba, Poppy and Ali. I especially like that Ali is treated as a proper character in his own right and not just the annoying little brother tagging along. It was easy to solve the mystery as you were following along - the clues were all there - and I'm sure kids will feel a real sense of accomplishment if they manage to work it out before the reveal. I also really enjoyed how Zaiba's aunt takes the three investigators seriously and doesn't treat them like stupid kids, and I appreciate the step-mum who is actually nice! And now I'm hungry for samosas. Yum!
