Caitlin's training as a seer on the isle Chameol is interrupted by the return of the evil necromancer Myrrhlock, while her lost lover the Badger investigates an outbreak of madness in two of the lower kingdoms. Sequel to "The Spellkey."
After rereading The Spellkey, which I had as a kid, I decided to try the rest of the trilogy, which I didn’t know existed. These books are a lot darker than I remembered — more YA than middle-grade, and even for YA there are some themes that I wouldn’t expect to see in a recently published book — but enjoyable, with a lyrical prose style that I quite liked. Characters from the first book pop up again in the second without much explanation of who they are or where the reader first encountered them (I should probably have remembered since I only took a few weeks between books one and two, but I was a bit lost) but I was able to follow along until my memory was refreshed.
my favorite in a favorite trilogy. love the characters. love the pacing. love the imaginative details that lurk behind every corner. downer tells a thousand beautiful small tales along the way.
