Macardle Sisters of Courage #3

Highlander Lord of Fire

Rate this book
She’s blind, yet he’s the one who cannot see. Snow might be blind, but it doesn’t stop her from seeing the powerful and fierce Lord of Fire’s true nature. He’s pigheaded, domineering, demanding, and completely frustrating. The few encounters she’s had with him when he’s visited the Clan Macardle did not go well, especially when he threatened her pup, Thaw. She intends to avoid the fiery Lord of Fire as much as possible. Unfortunately, there’s not much she can do when an unexpected snowstorm throws them together along with an unwanted stay at his keep. Tarass, the Lord of Fire, has never met such a willful, disobedient, unpredictable woman as Snow, and her protective, snarling little pup doesn’t help matters. She infuriates him at every turn and when he’s forced to save her from freezing to death in a raging snowstorm, he makes it known to her that under no circumstance will he allow the compromising situation to force him to wed a blind woman. There is more brewing then the love they both try to avoid. Tarass is on a mission. He intends to seek revenge against the person responsible for his parents’ brutal deaths, while also faced with two murders that must be solved, a myth that has woken and frightened his clan and must be put to rest, and a man who is intent on taking Snow away from him. In the end, the truth that is discovered is far different than what Tarass could have ever imagined and the only thing that matters to him is Snow. There isn’t anything he won’t do to save her.

4.5 saved the best for last stars!

I have read the previous 2 books in the series, and because there are interactions between the main characters in each of them, I recommend reading the first 2 before reading this one (particularly book 1). In addition, the characters from the earlier books in the trilogy recur in this story, so the background of their situations is helpful to know in that sense as well.

Snow Mcardle is the youngest of the trio of sisters. She has always been fiercly independent, but not long ago, she lost her vision when she ran into a burning building to rescue another. The fire claimed the life of her beloved mother soon after, and more recently, her father passed away leaving Snow and her sisters (Sorrell and Willow) in the care of their half-brother James. Fortunately, James has proven to be a loyal and caring brother who wishes to ensure that his sisters are allowed to make their own matches in marriage if they choose to marry; if not, they are welcome to stay with him as long as they wish. While Sorrell and Willow have both found love and moved to live with their husbands, Snow is certain that she will never marry - no man wants a blind wife as she would be considered a liability. Certainly not a clan chieftain - and especially not their "overlord" of sorts, Tarass, known to all as the Lord of Fire, not only because his clan name is McFiere, but because he has lived up to that descriptor as a warrior and leader. He and Snow have had several altercations and continue to butt heads - she believing him too rigid and uncaring, and he believing her in need of a leash... or at least a muzzle for her sharp and uncensored mouth.

When this installment begins, Snow had been visiting her sister Willow to help her establish herself in her new home with her new husband. Luckily, they are not too far from the Macardle lands; however, as Snow is returning home with a trusted warrior and friend, the light snowflakes falling turn into a full-fledged blizzard making it nearly impossible to see or navigate. When her escort suddenly no longer answers Snow's calls and she dismounts to try to determine what has happened, she discovers he has died (presumably from a heart attack). In the process, Snow loses her hold on the horses and is terrified to realize she is on her own. In a blizzard. Blind. With no idea of where she is in relation to her or Willow's home. Accompanied by only her loyal puppy Thaw who has become her eyes, he leads her out the elements to a place under a tree, but she knows she cannot last long on her own in such conditions. Luckily, a large man stumbles across her path and gets her to an enclosed shelter, but who is this man that wears a barbarian's costume, and is she truly safe with him?

Tarass is shocked to find Snow Macardle wandering in a blizzard on her own - how could anyone let this happen to a blind woman?! He is dressed in full barbarian attire as he has been visiting his mother's people looking for more information about the murder of his parents that happened many years ago. He has been frustrated by lack of knowledge (or lack of sharing of knowledge as he is certain someone must know), and he is planning to meet someone to get a lead, but those plans are placed on hold when he finds Snow in need of his help. Regardless of his feelings about her and how she tries his patience, he must get her to safety. But when they arrive at his home, the weather prevents them from traveling to her home for a few days. How will they ever be able to tolerate each other for that long when they can't be in the same space longer than a few moments without arguing? And what will happen when danger threatens Tarass' clan, and then Snow herself?

What I liked:
--- The main characters were fun in their constant banter and witty exchanges - as much as Tarass wanted to "tame" Snow in the beginning, she refused to be intimidated by a man who has always been able to make even the fiercest of warriors tremble in his presence
--- An interesting plot line with a mystery that kept me hooked and anxious to find out the back story and why Tarass and Snow were targeted for danger
--- Gotta love Thaw :)
--- Villains that you "love to hate"
--- Their chemistry was off the charts! Steamy goodness abounds!

What I didn't like as much:
--- I felt like the switch from annoyance to total love and devotion was a little quick to flip between these two, though the passion they had was palpable even when they were at odds; I do enjoy when most of the story is "us against the world" so from that perspective, I liked that they got together sooner rather than later
--- Semi Also, re another plot line,

Overall, this book had all the ingredients I enjoy in a good historical romance: mystery/intrigue, a hot alpha man, a strong woman, undeniable chemistry, and lots of steamy goodness!

Note: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Plot --- 4.5/5
Main Characters --- 4.5/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 4/5
Violence --- some (there are warriors and barbarians involved - nothing overly graphic)
Language --- I don't recall any; if there was, it was not egregious
POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

While I absolutely loved Sorrell and Ruddock's romance in Highlander of My Heart and was just kind of lukewarm on Willow and Slatter's romance in Desired by a Highlander, for Snow and Tarass's romance this time around...

...I'm kind of inbetween those two.
_______________

The dynamic and buildup between these two was present int he previous books as well, with Snow being perhaps the most courageous sister in standing up with Tarass, the "Lord of Fire", when literally no one else would. Despite being blind, she was indeed courageous, though many might say foolish instead.

Anyway, her romance with Tarass builds from this, and finds her uncertain of how to react when he saves her life in a snowstorm. On the one hand, he seems domineering and has made it clear that he has no interest in a blind woman; but on the other hand, he's also surprisingly gentle, and she is overly aware of him as a man.

As for Tarass, while he does find himself attracted to Snow, he knows he can't let his attraction take over his reason, especially seeing as he's got a mission to complete of his own and will only marry a woman for the power she brings to his clan.

Of course, as in the case of all Donna Fletcher romances (or, all romances period), love prevails over all, and the initial intentions very rarely follow through from start to finish.
____________

Now, in terms of the story, I'd have to say that the first half was far more interesting for me than the second half, particularly during the time that Snow and Tarass were not married. Just going through their dynamic of fighting-but-not-really was very engaging to read, and I particularly like how the stakes were upped when Snow literally accepts a proposal from another man, as she thinks that her own love for Tarass will come to nothing. Tarass's reaction to that was nothing short of golden, lemme tell ya!

Where the plot kind of loses its momentum though is when Tarass and Snow settle in together. Then, the plot reverts to scenes sort of being repeated in terms of something mysterious happening and someone being behind it, with the hero being concerned and ordering the heroine to stay safe, but then the heroine disobeying him without thought for A, B, or C reasons. I will give this book credit that it does give us more love scenes than in Willow's romances, though not QUITE as steamy as with Sorrell's romance. But anyway, I just felt that particularly some of Tarass's intimidation factor was lost in how he seems to be investigating and talking to his warriors more than fighting or anything like that, and I missed his sternness from the previous books this time around. Like...he starts off strict and asshole-y and whatnot, but then just completely mellows out once he admits how he feels about Snow. It just felt...well, slightly hollow, like what was unique about him as a character was replaced with a generic romantic hero.

But meh, anyway, these are very slight issues, just really something I mention to justify taking one star off. Overall though, it's a lovely read and a fitting end to the Maccardle sisters trilogy. Will definitely be re-reading all three books again in the future!

Definitely over rated. The relationship seemed somewhat cheesy and the relationship was way too instant for me. Didn’t love it. Plot 3(1-10) steaminess 6.5(1-10)

Highlander Lord of Fire by Donna Fletcher is book Three in the Macardle Sisters of Courage Series. This is the story of Tarass, the Lord of Fire and Snow Macardle. I have read (and LOVED!) the previous books which did add to my enjoyment of this one but you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Tarass is out to get revenge on his parents death so he is focused on that but he keeps butting heads with Snow, who is the half-sister of James Macardle. Tarass is taken back about how little control he has on her. When Tarass finds Snow lost in a snow storm with her dog Thaw, he must save her. Bring these two together in a snow storm that are stuck in. Snow who is blind has settled into her ways of being single knowing that is her future other than being a sister and aunt. Snow's feelings for Tarass of those of dislike just as he feels about her but when they are stuck spending time together things and feelings start to change.
Loved their story...this series just keeps getting better. I am a big fan of Ms. Fletcher's writing so this was a must read for me...Loved it!

5 stars ( 5/4 stars Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)

5 stars: This book was great, truly awesome, couldn’t and wouldn’t put it down. It hit all my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions and 4. stories with family/friends.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).

Totally engrossed with the development and interest in main characters and secondary characters. Will definitely read the next book by this author.

Laugh out loud...humorous all through the book. The give and take of all the characters are ridiculous awesome.

Movement of the book was a sweet flow. Book writing/conversation super engaging.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Romantic/sexual content (kissing, oral, love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top; again nicely intertwined in the story. 3/5 hotness and steam.

I’m not a huge fan of ‘internal dialogue’ in books. I can only take so much before I start skimming through pages. This book did not have me doing that...the internal dialogue was placed appropriately throughout the book.

Will definitely re-read this book/series to enjoy it again.

Would absolutely recommend this author.

Highlander Lord of Fire by Donna Fletcher
Mcardle Sisters of Courage Series Book Three
Snow Macardle believes she'll never marry or have a family of her own. Being she's blind, who would want her? So, she'll enjoy her nieces and nephews. She also has her pup, Thaw, who helps her get around, she needs no more than that. And then her life turns upside down. Rescued by a man she hates as much as he hates her...she finds something unexpected...kindness.

Tarass, Lord of Fire, Clan MacFiere, can't believe James Macardle doesn't keep a tighter rein on his blind half-sister. Especially after he finds her roaming around alone in a snowstorm. He can't wait until the storm moves on so he can return the beautiful, stubborn woman to her home.

Much more is going on at Clan MacFiere. Tarass has been searching for why his parents and the Sandrik village were slaughtered. Why two men connected to him have been murdered. It's a puzzle and pieces are missing. Loved this trilogy...as of all this author's stories. Great characters and storylines.

After waiting anxiously for Tarass and Snow’s story I was not disappointed. This was absolutely a wonderful love story that I will want to read over and over again. Lord of Fire is the third book in the Macardle Sister of Courage Trilogy, and while Books 1 and 2 were really good, book 3 blew me away. The plot was strong and interesting with several twist and turns that kept me trying to figure out “who dun nit”. I absolutely loved Tarass as the alpha hero who loved with everything in him once he figured out what was going on in his heart. Snow was so sweet but a very strong heroine who loved just as hard as Tarass did. They fit together quite nicely. I loved how this author tied everything up so nicely in the end. I didn’t want the story to end so I read it slower than I normally do when I read. Once again Ms. Fletcher has done what she does so well and that is write about strong, fun and lovely highlanders. I absolutely loved this series!

Excellent end to the series

Tarass the Lord of Fire comes across Snow who is lost in a snow storm. Snow is blind. These two have a rocky history and often seem to hate each other until they are trapped in this storm together. They must set aside their differences when snow is injured and depends solely on Tarass to help her. Seems like he s helping her out of jams often. When she agrees to marry a much older friend of her fathers, Tarass rescues her again from that fate. This story is full of twists and suspense and I loved it. Not your typical historical romance much deeper.

Wow!! what can I say. Loved the whole Macardle Sister of Courage Series. Book 3 was about Snow a blind woman and her faithful dog Thaw, and of course Tarass, the Lord of Fire. Snow and Tarass have a history of arguing whenever they are in each others company which made me laugh at time. Read the whole book in one day as I didn't want to put it down. Highly recommend reading the whole series. You won't be disappointed. Donna Fletcher is an amazing story teller.

Outstanding

I enjoyed reading this book. The writing flowed easily and effortless. The characters were well developed and compelling. The women were strong, brave and beautiful. The men strong, vulnerable, overwhelming sexy. The lovemaking is off the charts. If you enjoy reading a fast moving, a little supernatural components, suspenseful and unpredictable novel you will love this book.

The writing style and words used just did not match the time period. I doubt a Scottish highlander would say "yeah". The story seemed convoluted with no real proper reasons for the attacks. The way everyone reacted and spoke to each other seemed over the top. The love between the two mains felt contrived. There should have been a longer period between arguing with each other and then falling in love. This seemed more like a modern story in terms of dialogue

A good story with a very satisfying ending. The relationship and the character development was so well written. I loved that Tarass and Snow did not wait too long to declare their love and there was no grand misunderstanding which is an overused trope. The story was focused mainly on their relationship and the love they had for each other; and how they resolved the mystery behind Tarass’ parents deaths.

I was eagerly anticipating this book as I’d read the first two books about Snow’s sisters, and it didn’t disappoint! The beginning of the book reels you in and the rest of the story keeps you interested in solving the various mysteries surrounding Tarass. A brilliant series and a brilliant third book. I will definitely reread all 3 in the near future. Fantastic!

Great read. I was on the edge of my seat!

Highlander Lord of Fire was a edge of your seat read. I couldn’t put the book down. Tarass and Snow were well developed characters that had laugh out loud moments and moments I was crying. I loved Snow character as she was very strong and didn’t take any crap from Tarass. I’m looking forward to her next series!

One of the best

I have enjoyed all three books and after each I think this one was the best. This one had me 'stumpted' when at last it was revealed who wanted Tarass dead. There was love and compassionate behavior all throughout the book. Great job,'s Fletcher

Highlander Lord of Fire
Macardle Sisters of Courage Trilogy Book 3
by Donna Fletcher

WOW! This was THE book I was waiting for! I knew that Tarass was not what he seemed in the previous two books, he came off as a very domineering unfeeling brute that would not hesitate to exact punishment to the unfortunate soul that would cross him. Especially one spitfire of a woman who he can’t keep from tangling with. Snow has always rubbed him the wrong way and she never hesitated to tell him what is what. The tension between them is a prelude to something more potent they’re not yet aware, until Tarass comes across Snow and a Thaw in a blizzard that forces them to marry!

Tarass has no time for love he’s bent on finding the reason and motive behind his parents death, and falling in love with Snow is out of the question until her life is in peril does he realize that she means more to him that he ever thought!
I loved the witty dialogue and banter, Snow isn’t a timid mouse even though she’s blind. Lots of chemistry and sizzle and I really enjoyed the mystery it really kept me intrigued till the end. I never would have guessed on the villains identity.
As always Donna Fletcher did a phenomenal job! This is in my opinion a WINNER! I highly recommend reading them in order you get the enjoyment of meeting Tarass and Snow. Once again this was an Amazing series and it definitely goes on my keeper shelf.
This is my honest unbiased opinion.
