Your husband isn't who he says he is, say the people at your door. Come with us.
Don't trust them, says a voice on the phone. Run.
Who would you believe?
In this terrifying first psychological thriller by bestselling author T.W. Ellis, will one woman goes on the run and is forced to question everything she held dear . . .
An extremely fast paced thriller 🏠 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Your husband isn’t who he says he is, say the people at your door, we just want to talk to you. Don’t trust them, says a voice on the phone. Run. Who would you believe? ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This has to be one of the most fast paced books I’ve read. The majority of the book focuses on a 24 hour period with so many twists and turns, it’s impossible to keep up with where it’s going or who can be trusted making it an easy one to binge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And Trevor 😭 the sweetest old man and an amazing addition to the story, I loved the light hearted feel he brought. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝: the pace and movie-like feel of NO EXIT. 🔪⛄️
A Knock At The Door by TW Ellis sucked me in big time the start got my attention straight away & kept me turning the pages until the end which may i say was so bloody ridiculous its not funny, but i did get through it.
Jem & Leo Malhoffer had the perfect marriage a huge home too much space really & were really happy until one fateful day Jem gets a knock at the door from two FBI agents Agent Wilks & Messer telling Jem they want to speak to Leo about a money laundering that was going on in Leo's wine merchant business , the criminal enterprise has been using Leo so they can clear drug money.
When Wilks & Messer tell Jem that she really doesn't know her husband Jem gasps as her anxiety hits a peak , she refuses to believe them but as time goes by she starts to second guess herself. When Agent Carlson comes to see Jem he tells her something that will test her sanity Wils & Messer are not FBI agents so who are they?
Jem doesn't know who to trust or who is telling the truth all Jem wants to believe is Leo? but can she? This was a fast paced read that kept me turning the pages but the ending was flat & was a let down .
When you pick up A Knock At The Door by TW Ellis please make sure that you have plenty of time to read and no pressing jobs to get done because you will not want to put this down. Wow! I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book from the very short blurb but it was fantastic and I pretty much read it in a day. Twisty and addictive, you need to get your hands on this one.
There is a reason that the blurb is short on this book...you really don't want to know too much going in. Leo has just left his wife Jen at home to head off for a business trip when there is a knock at the door. 2 FBI agents are there and want to talk about Leo. From what they are saying, Leo is not the man that she thought he was. But then the house phone rings - another FBI agent who knows nothing about the ones already in Jen's house. This is the start of a cat and mouse chase across the state to try to find the truth. It is told over a 24 hour period and is such a fast paced story. The ending of this will blow your mind. This is a seriously good book!
Thanks to Hachette Australia for my advanced copy of this book to read.
Jen and Leo live in a small town outside NYC. Leo has just left for a business trip when two FBI Agents knock on her door. They tell her that Leomisnt whomshe thinks he is. Then she gets a phone call from a called Carson whomtells her that the men in her house are not from the FBI. He tells her not to trust them and to run
This book is fast paced from the beginning. The story is told from Jen's perspective. We get flashbacks that tell us how she met her husband. The story takes place over twenty four hours. There's some good twists. I was sucked in from the first page of this action packed and gripping read. I didn't expect the ending.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Little, Brown Book Group UK and the author T. W. Ellis for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A Knock at the Door, I would say the first book by this author T.W Ellis, but I know this book is by one of my favourite authors Tom Wood.
I would say a different paced book by Tom Wood but, this is fast paced, full of twists, full of action.
A Knock at the Door, starts at full throttle and stays at that pace throughout the book.
They just want to talk. THEY'RE LYING. Your husband isn't who he says he is, say the people at your door. Come with us. Don't trust them, says a voice on the phone. Run. Who would you believe? In this terrifying first psychological thriller by bestselling author Tom Wood ( published under T.W. Ellis), one woman goes on the run and is forced to question everything she held dear.
Filled with characters good and bad, but wait a minute, not sure who is good and bad and I was guessing to the last page.
Tom Wood, never give up on Victor the Assassin, but you have found a new niche, and enjoyed this book with pace, tension, action and shocks.
Enjoy, I do not want to say anymore and give anything away. Just enjoy it.
Shortly after her husband Leo leaves for an overseas work trip, Jem Talhoffer gets a knock on the door. Two FBI agents tell her that Leo is actually works for a cartel as a money-launderer and they want information from her. However, she receives a phone call from another agent, telling her that those agents are fake and she needs to get out of there. So Jem is on the run, unsure of who to trust, including her husband.
A rant will follow, and it will contain spoilers.
But if you're happy reading another generic, obvious thriller that ends exactly the same way as a million before it, feel free to see what's behind this door.
Oh dear, what a jumble! Just found this plain silly. It hit the ground running but I couldn't help giggling - sadly I don't think I should have been! Not for me, this one. 😕
Two agents knock at the door. They tell you that your husband isn't who he is says he is, that you need to come with them. A phone rings, the voice tells you not to trust them, to run. What do you do next?
Oh this book! I absolutely loved every single part of it. The twists had me shocked, I had to take a few minutes at the end to really appreciate how fantastic this book is. I can't go into too much detail as you need to go in with an open mind when reading this - it's worth every single minute!
This thriller has an excellent premise and it does keep up the tension, but I didn't get along with the writing style - it gave me the impression of being shouted at - and the characters didn't engage me in the least, any more than the prose did. 2 stars and not 1 because I was interested just enough to see how it ended.
A fast paced story where the wife had to investigate the truth about her husband when the FBI declared he was not who he said he was. A convoluted plot with some far fetched subplots, the book went on become a thriller. The story needed something more yo keep me gripped.
Overall, it was a book which made me curious about where it would all end.
Thank you to Hachette Australia for gifting me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own
3.5 STARS
Content warning: Mild drug use, anxiety rep
A Knock at the Door is a debut psychological thriller by author T. W. Ellis. In it, we follow Jem, a woman who’s husband owns a wine business and is away a lot for travel. She deals with a lot of anxiety (Which hit home for me) so when there’s a knock at her door not long after her husband leaves for another business trip, nothing can prepare her for what comes next.
This story takes place over the course of twenty-four hours and jumps back and forth in time. It is truly a game of cat and mouse where nothing is at it seems and this makes for a very binge worthy thriller.
The Good - Short chapters offer an intense reading experience and allows the reader to binge read this story. - The twists were well plotted - The anxiety rep in this book is on point. I suffer from anxiety also and I felt understood reading about Jem’s struggles The Bad - Some of the language choices didn’t work for me. Changing between using contractions and not using them was a little jarring.
All in all, this is a solid debut psychological thriller and it kept my attention so much that I couldn’t put it down. I’d definitely recommend for someone looking for a fast and intense read where nothing is as it seems.
It started of brilliantly! I was hooked and wanted to keep reading but that’s where it ends.
Jem is a little stupid and slow and you read the book; things that are a little obvious, or things she could have done to make things easier just don’t come naturally to her..
Trevor is an angel ❤️
The ending was predictable; I got bored in the last 7 or so chapters.. it’s the same “I’m telling the story to make you think it’s someone else when it’s actually me” narration and it becomes draining… The first half of the book is good, I like Tom’s writing style, but the book lost me.. don’t think I’ll be reading any of his backlog tho..

This was a fantastic psychological thriller that I found utterly compelling. I loved the idea of the plot, and loved how it was executed. The characters were great and the writing was superb.
The reason I can't rate this book higher is that unfortunately I did not enjoy the ending at all. To me, it made the entire book invalid and nonsensical. Decisions that made sense no longer make sense with this ending, creating many plot holes for me.
Jem, married to handsome Leo, suffers from anxiety when she learns that she cannot have children. Her husband, a wine sommelier, leaves on one of his trips and he has only just left when there is a knock at the door. Two FBI agents tell Jem that her husband is working for a cartel and that she needs to go with them. She is in midst of answering their questions when the phone rings and an FBI agent called Carson tells her that Leo is in trouble and that the two agents are also not who they say they are.
The book definitely has a fast pace and a myriad of twists and turns, but I felt that it lacked heart. It started off well but rapidly became so far-fetched that I only kept reading to find out if what I suspected would be the end game. I would still recommend that readers give it a try if they like thrillers - many other reviewers seemed to like it. Overall, it was an okay read but I wouldn't be a hurry to reread it.
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Little, Brown Book Group UK/Sphere, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
Hmm. I think there couldve been a good story in here but felt like maybe three different storyline ideas thrown into one. I found the writing to be very wordy (unnecessarily, I mean) in that there seemed to be descriptions for absolutely everything at every point. The book started off from one person's point of view then changed to another quite far in and there didn't seem to be any particular reason for it as it was just repeating a story that we had just read. I persevered with this even though I found it dull but now I think I needn't have. Again, the ending was like three different endings had been considered and the author couldn't decide which one to go with so added them all. Pretty pointless. There is a character in it that isn't properly explained at the end and I feel like if I read it again after knowing the twists and storyline that it ended with, then it would make even less sense. All in all, not a good book in my opinion, just a bit meh and poor storyline/s with excessive words.
This is a really clever gripping intricately thought out novel, written by Tom Wood, author of the Victor The Assassin Series, under his other pen name. Gripped me from Page 1 all the way to the end. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Multiple WTF moments. I can't recommend it enough.
Was quite a roller coaster of a ride. The lead female was made to be weak, so you just wanted to shake her into action, but the ending was a bit wow 👌.
So, Jem is your next door homemaker/yoga teacher, quiet as a mouse living in a sleepy suburban house with winemaker husband Leo. All is well until one morning, after her husband leaves for the day, she is confronted by brand new information about her trusted husband. Suddenly she is on her own, not knowing where to go, whom to trust. She runs from her house, into the wild but where would she go from there? Can the police be trusted? After all, she just ran away from two people from the FBI who had just tried to kill her! Behold the roller-coaster ride she takes along with the old foul-mouthed Trevor and his dog. Things are about to get real nasty from here!
What would you do when you’re confronted by the police, dropping a HUGE bomb of information about your husband who literally means the world to you? RUN I’d say, but where to? Apparently there’s a drug cartel involved. They are dangerous, aren’t they? I loved the way Jem reacts to the danger in front of her. That’s exactly what I’d have done if I were in such situation. She makes bad decisions, trusts strangers and makes rude, sarcastic comments on cartel men. Probably trained killers. The conversations between Trevor and Jem were darkly funny and surprisingly entertaining.
The story narrated by Jem follows the events following the day after the KNOCK AT THE DOOR and slowly explores to how Leo and Jem met. With a breakneck speed, the chapters fly in a jiff hooking the readers with the necessary anticipation and curiosity. I completely enjoyed the female action, dark humor, and unexpected twists, especially that ending!! Highly recommended thriller of 2020.
Thank you Hachette for this book in exchange for an honest review
A Knock at the Door will introduce you to Jem, your standard housewife who lives in your regular life with a loving family and a delightful home. Her husband, Leo, has just left for a work trip when two FBI agents knock at the front door. The FBI inform Jen that the Leo isn’t who he says his and they are there to protect her while Leo launders drug money for the cartel. Already frantic at the news of the FBI, Jen receives a phone call telling her not to trust the FBI and to run. Ohhh I loved this concept, because really how many times do we open the door to strangers and we have no idea why they are there, what they are selling and why they aren’t telling you that you were an instant winner and here is a free car. While you aren’t winning a free car, A Knock at the Door is a fast-paced book that will have you cringing when the doorbell goes off. Though I found the ‘plot twists’ predictable it didn’t stop the story itself from being entertaining.
2.5 ⭐ rounded off to 3 ⭐ I picked this book up on the recommendation of a fellow bookstagrammer but oh, this book could have been so much better! The starting was so good and it kept me hooked but the story took a turn and everything went BAM!
Things I LIKED ✔️ • Fast- paced, keeps you on the edge of your seat. • Superb writing style! The author describes each detail minutely and I really enjoyed the way he wrote. • Tense and action-paced, more like an action thriller.
Things I DISLIKED ❌ • The ridiculous ending. I would've given this book maybe 3.5 or 4 ⭐ had it not been for the sudden unbelievable ending. It seemed as if the author suddenly made it up and didn't think twice before including it. It created so many plotholes and unanswered questions!
• Dual POVs which made no sense. The inclusion of certain chapters felt pointless because they had no connection with the story.
That's it, I guess. I really think that without the extremely absurd ending, the story would actually have been good. Nevertheless, if you're still eager to read an action-packed thriller with 'No Exit' vibes, you can check this out.
#qotd: What's a book you have read which has the worst ending?
This is by Tom Wood, the author of one of my favorite series, Victor the Assassin. He wrote this book under a pseudonym. This wasn’t bad. A mystery about a woman and her husband and everyone else who may or may not be who they appear to be. Not the shocking twist ending he was going for. But a decent book. Not as good s the Victor series, though. I’m anxiously awaiting the next book in that series.
Very cleverly written, and unpredictable book about a woman on the run from ….”are they baddies or goodies??” I found the book a little annoying as it was told in the first person, but it was fast paced and quite funny in places. The best line…. “ I guess you’ve laced this with some kind of poison” “No of course I haven’t! Battery acid actually “ (Funny when you read it in the situation) The ending was a little crazy but still recommend this book
I wanted to give this book 4 stars. I planned the whole way through reading it to give it 4 stars. It is fast paced and clever, a little predictable but a great read. I feel like it needed more editing as there were a fair amount of grammatical issues; however, the ending earned this book that extra star.
