Milo Morai, the Undying High Lord of the Horseclans, secure in the knowledge that peace had once again come to the Kindred clans, now journeyed with a select band to explore unknown territory. Perhaps days or weeks ahead, Milo would discover an untouched ruin of the Old Ones, a veritable treasure-trove of rare metals and trade goods to enrich the Horseclans.
More than dead ruins awaited Milo and his valiant band of hunters. For on the trail they now rode lurked nightmare creatures hungering for the blood of man. And at the end of the road waited heirs to a legacy of violence which might claim the men and women of the Horseclans as the final victims in a war that should have ended hundreds of years ago....
Franklin Robert Adams (August 31, 1933 - January 4, 1990) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer, formerly a career soldier. He is best known for his "Horseclans" books. He wrote as Robert Adams, an abbreviated form of his full name.
Adams was an early pioneer of the post-holocaust novel. His Horseclans novels are precursors to many of today's attempts at this type of story, many of which do not exhibit his painstakingly detailed world view or extraordinary plot follow-through (many of his Horseclans books are so interlinked that they make sense only when read in order; he did not create many "stand alone" books in the series).
Hallmarks of Adams' style include a focus on violent, non-stop action, meticulous detail in matters historical and military, strong description, and digressions expounding on various subjects from a conservative and libertarian viewpoint.
Milo and his Horseclans are on the move again, they have come to a ruined city of the old ones rich in provisions and hunting grounds for the folk but danger lurks around every corner, rival bands, strange creatures. Milo has a lot to contend with to try and keep everyone safe. Whilst between the main story of the novel we get more fascinating glimpses into Milo's chequered past.
In this case, perhaps, more guilty than usual, as I confess to have read a pirated e-copy. I bought the first 14 volumes of the series before it went out of print. If anybody ever gets around to re-releasing volumes 15-18, I promise I'll buy them...
But back to the more usual meaning of "guilty pleasures". Robert Adams is not really a very good writer, but he's an amazing story builder. The sheer scope of his post-apocalyptic world is amazing. It's phenomenally well crafted. If only his characters didn't go into long pointless soliloquies.
The Horseclans series is probably the best blend of fantasy and SiFi I have ever read. Pretty much something for everyone in these books. Great characters, epic storyline, fantastic writings. My highest recommendation
