Fan Mail is the second novel in the Aspen Adams Suspense series by Daryl Wood Gerber. It was published in 2019, and I previously read the first book in the series over the summer. I was introduced to Gerber's work through a few of her cozy mystery series and wanted to read her latest release from a different genre. It's becoming a strong series that I highly recommend.

The books takes place in Lake Tahoe (which is not Colorado, despite my mind trying to insist on it — thanks Daryl!) and focus on Aspen, a former child psychologist who's become a private detective. It's a little over a year since the last book ended, and this time, Aspen has become friendly with the reporter from the previous book. So friendly that Gloria Morning begs Aspen to figure out who might be trying to kill her or protect her. You see... random notes show up about saving Gloria from certain bad people in her life, and then those people end up dead. The issue: those people haven't hurt Gloria in any way, so she's confused! Is she doing this to herself?

The mystery plot is strong. I changed my guess a few times in the first 50% of the book and when I finalized the guilty party, I was correct. I only realized it because of an early clue, but it is hidden well and makes perfect sense. There is a lot of backstory to come out before we truly understand the complexity of everyone's relationships at the tv studio. The first victim, a gynecologist, has a lot in her past to unveil.

Gerber writes really well. The book reads easily and absorbs you from beginning to end. I never wanted to put it down, and it had lots of great scenes above and beyond the mystery. We get to know how Aspen and Nick's relationship progresses, her niece's maturity (and immaturity) since Aspen adopted her, and the growth in Aspen's skills as a detective. I look forward to the next installment. 4.5 stars.

Long story with loads of minute details in this multiple murder mystery.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really enjoyed the premise of the story. The author delivers an addicting story that has so many twists, it’s hard to keep them straight.
Fan Mail is book two in a series and it seemed like it would’ve been a good idea to read that first one to get some of the backstory of the characters. It was easy to keep up with what was going on, but it would’ve been nice to have a little bit more in-depth knowledge before reading this book.
With that said, not reading book one could’ve been part of the reason I had difficulty connecting to the characters. I felt Aspen was disrespectful to her boyfriend and his job as a detective.
She dug into his cases and crime scenes even when he asked her not to. She seemed very amateur to me and it annoyed me. I didn’t hate her. Just lost respect for her and felt no connection to her or her boyfriend at all.
In several parts of the story it just seemed like Aspen was spinning her wheels. The author went from suspect to suspect dropping bits and pieces here and there, which is what we expect from a mystery novel. However, I found myself a bit frustrated in a few sections of this book.
Overall, the story was entertaining and Gerber brought us a good plot with plenty of suspects to consider. I just needed a little bit more respect and consideration from Miss Aspen.
This is an interesting mystery in a series. I didn’t read book 1 (but I had already read book three so apparently I read this series in backwards order) and while it didn’t hinder my understanding of what was happening. I like Aspen Adams, but I felt like she fell flat where it came to her boyfriend (her relationship with her niece was great). I thought the mystery was fun, but I found the killer to be obvious and it annoyed me that the narrator seemed to ignore all of the obvious signs and avoid considering the killer as a suspect. I also was frustrated that the storyline about Aspen’s health disappeared. Overall I gave this one 3.5 stars rounded up for star selection. Aspen is waiting for a call from her doctor, when her doctor calls early Aspen misses it and plans on calling back. Before she can she finds out that her doctor is murdered. It’s not long before she gets a call from a reporter she knows asking her to investigate since she’s gotten notes claiming the murders are for the reporter. This book is action packed but there is also a lot of detail and building of the characters.
Fan Mail is the second in the Aspen Adams series and a nice addition. Aspen is a therapist with a college degree from Stanford but after a traumatic event is now working with her Aunt Max as a private investigator, mostly serving papers and such. Aspen is dating a sheriff detective, Nick Shaper, and the two are crazy about each other. Sometimes the two butt heads when Nick thinks that Aspen is digging where she has no business. Aspen is raising her teenage niece Candace because the mother, Aspen's sister, has a drug problem. Her friend and television anchor Gloria Morning hired her to investigate who might have sent her some letters, apparently a killer, who claims to take care of getting rid of individuals for her-not sure why he/she felt the need. Letters arrive just before someone is killed.
As the bodies pile up and letters arrive, Aspen investigates and Candace insists on helping. She actually has some good ideas. There are lots of suspects to check out, at the television station and others, and lots of clues to decipher for motive. Trying to figure out how all the victims are connected is a puzzle. Fan Mail has a great mystery to solve that kept me guessing and is an entertaining read. I am enjoying this series and hope to read more in the future.
Fan Mail is an an Aspen Adams Novel of Suspense. I’ve read many books by author Daryl Wood Gerber and by her pseudonym, Avery Aames. This series is my favorite so far. The characters are complex and compelling and the mysteries are enthralling and unique. Fan Mail has suspense built in form the get-go as Aspen, a private investigator, anxiously awaits a call from her doctor on a very important medical mater. Instead, she receives a call from a local police detective. The doctor has been found dead, a victim of homicide.
Meanwhile, local celebrity news anchor Gloria Morning is receiving strange and disturbing notes from a deranged fan. One of the notes mentions the very doctor that has been found murdered. In fact, every person mentioned in the notes sent to Gloria meets a deadly demise. However, Gloria doesn’t understand the connection between herself and the individuals turning up dead.
Soon, Aspen and the local police are scrambling to find the serial killer. Is it a deranged fan? A scorned suitor? Gloria herself? Or someone else altogether that has managed to stay off the police’s radar?
Bring on the next in the series! I’ll be eagerly awaiting it...
Review:
The characters are well developed and well rounded. Aspen is a new private investigator, and what she lacks in experience she makes up for enthusiasm. With the help of her aunt(for moral support) and her niece, Aspen must figure out who the deranged killer is and stop them before they kill even more.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me in from the very beginning. The author created a lot of tension and intrigue with her written word, which is not an easy thing to do. I had to use all of my sleuthing skills and I still was not sure until the reveal.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted suspense mystery. I have to go back and read the first book in the series.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Beyond The Page Publishing, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
"Fan Mail" by Daryl Wood Gerber is the fabulous follow-up to "Desolate Shores", which I read and loved in 2019. Going into this book, I was hoping I'd love it as much as the first one, and I did...maybe even more. "Fan Mail" offers the reader:
1. Great characters! Aspen, our heroine, is wonderful. She simultaneously comes across as likable, intelligent, brave (but not stupidly so), and honorable. She works as a PI-in-training for her aunt's agency, and is gradually honing her investigative skills. Combined with her past career as a psychologist, Aspen has all the tools needed to effectively unravel mysteries. Love interest Nick (police detective), Max (Aspen's aunt), and Candace (Aspen's niece) are also nicely drawn and intriguing in their own right. Several of the secondary characters/suspects really shone in the story, being quite well-developed as characters so that the reader gets to know them while Aspen investigates their connection (if any) to the crimes.
2. The location! "Desolate Shores" is set in the Lake Tahoe area. The author describes the setting (and specific locations within that setting) so perfectly, I can see everything clearly in my mind's eye. I've added Lake Tahoe to the list of places I'd love to visit someday. The setting is distinctive enough to almost seem like a separate character in the story. Personally, I love it when a novel's setting is so vivid I actually remember the location after I've finished. This one will stay with me for a long time!
3. The mystery itself! This book features a serial killer who is still actively committing crimes, so the stakes are high. Aspen knows the first victim, and is drawn into the investigation further when a friend starts receiving notes believed to be from the killer. With the multiple victims, there are plenty of suspects, as well as the whole "are all of these crimes related" question. Aspen is proving to be a thorough and relentless investigator, and I find her method of looking into things very appealing.
4. Candace! Aspen's niece is a lovely girl, and it was nice to see her living with her aunt permanently in this book. I also enjoyed seeing how she's gaining confidence in herself as a person, even as she navigates the trials of middle-school life. May she find a better boyfriend in the next book....Aspen should dig up some dirt on the current one, and blackmail him out of Candace's life.
All in all, this is a wonderful book, and I can't say enough good things about it. Read it...you will NOT be disappointed. I love everything that Daryl Wood Gerber writes, and recommend that all fans of the mystery/suspense genre acquire one (or more) of her books as soon as possible.
Five out of perfect slices of provolone!
Fan Mail by Daryl Wood Gerber is the second novel An Aspen Adams Novel of Suspense series. It can be read as a standalone for those who have not indulged in Desolate Shores. Fan Mail is a complex novel full of twists and surprises. Aspen Adams quit her job as a therapist to work for her aunt’s detective agency. Aspen has a long way to go before she gets her license, but she is learning the ropes. Then her gynecologist is killed after leaving Aspen two messages that were cut off. A local restaurant owner is murdered soon thereafter. Gloria Manning phones Aspen because she received odd letters after each crime. Gloria is used to fan mail as a news anchor, but these notes scare her. She wants Aspen to get answers. Aspen starts questioning the numerous suspects. Unfortunately, the killer is just beginning. Fan Mail is a fast paced suspense novel that will have you on the edge of your seat. I like that there are cozy moments tossed in. Aspen is learning to be a private investigator by working at her Aunt Maxi’s agency. I like Aunt Maxi with her no nonsense approach. She is careful to give Aspen rules (not that she always pays attention). Candace, Aspen’s niece, lives with her and is now thriving. Candace is mature for her age and provides good insights into the murders. Nick Shaper is Aspen’s boyfriend and a detective with Placer County Sheriff’s office. He has mixed emotions about Aspen’s getting involved in these crimes. He appreciates her helpful information, but Nick does not want anything to happen to her. The characters are developed and realistic. There are multiple murders along with taunting notes and other nefarious activities in Fan Mail. There are multiple suspects for Aspen to wade through, but the clues are meager. Readers will have a hard time pinning down the guilty party unless you pay close attention to the clues. It is a complex mystery that continues to evolve as the story progresses. I enjoyed all the action along with the tense atmosphere. You never knew what the perpetrator was going to do next. I like Daryl Wood Gerber’s descriptive writing which brought the story alive for me. Fan Mail is an absorbing novel with an active adolescent, multiple murders, a dashing detective, a crafty killer, and a resolute rookie investigator.
And to think I was afraid to start this series since I was (wrongly) thinking that due to its more serious covers, that it would be one of those scary thrillers that I'm not a fan of, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It just moves at a little quicker pace than the cozies I've come to love from this author, the murder scenes while not seriously graphic are a little more defined but still not gross or anything, and some things are just a little more serious, but that's all good.
I've come to really like these characters too! Aspen is amazing how she's taken in her fourteen-year-old niece Candace, and Candace is a really likable kid now that she's away from her mom. It's so cute how she's kind of protective of her aunt Aspen. I love that Aspen and Det. Nick didn't waste any time getting together, and they appear to be in a very good place. He's incredibly patient with her need to investigate but at the same time, he's sweet and protective but not overly smothering, because Aspen is a very independent lady. She and Nick do work well together. Of course, I can't forget good old aunt Max who owns a detective agency and is Aspen's boss while training her in the ways of private investigation.
I honestly had pegged the correct person as the killer, but the motive was so tangled and twisted that it was actually fun winding down all the various paths that led to Aspen figuring it out. I had no idea why I thought this person was guilty, but I just felt that way. The showdown was really exciting, and I was relieved that Aspen had thought ahead to make sure Nick and backup were also stationed near. The ending was a very sweet one for Aspen's bestie Gwen too. It'll be interesting to see where the next case takes these characters.
Life has settled down for Aspen Adams and her niece Candace. Aspen is working had learning at her aunt's private investigator firm and Candace has a boyfriend! Well, things look good except for Aspen's little personal medical issue. So when Aspen's doctor calls her first thing one morning, she thinks it must be related to test results. Sadly, it isn't. I was not sold on Aspen's need to investigate at this point, but after Gloria Morning started getting letters, Aspen's involvement felt a lot more realistic. Once over that odd start, the story picks up and things get good. The author did a great job of giving readers all the information but the murdered was still a surprise. I was also glad to get to learn more about Aspen, Candace, and the other residents of Lake Tahoe. I love feeling nostalgic about the Lake Tahoe area and the local history the author interjects throughout the story. One piece of advice for Ms. Adams? Change to Verizon! I know cell phone coverage up there is spotty, but it I've never had the problems she seems to have.
Thanks to The Review Crew for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
An interesting read to say the least! Aspen has been working as a PI in Lake Tahoe, Nevada but has experience as a therapist, also. Also, she has been guardian for her niece, Candice, who is 14 years old.
Many possible suspects in this story! This book begins and ends with a lot of intrigue and twisty suspense!
Aspen is brought into a case by a popular TV news anchor, Gloria, with whom Aspen had been acquainted. She gets both assistance and a bit of interference from her boyfriend, Nick (a detective with the county).
The problem becomes connecting three murders to a single suspect because a letter is written, with the same wording, to Gloria at the time of each murder.
All suspects seem to be the perpetrator at any given point. The reader is constantly wondering and guessing at who is responsible for the murder of; a gynecologist, a restaurant owner and a special education teacher.
The possibilities are endless. Yet the read is quick and very enthralling !
RECOMMEND!
Many Thanks to Beyond the Page Publishing and NetGalley for a superb read!
Fan Mail by Daryl Wood Gerber is the 2nd book in an Aspen Adams Novel of suspense series, and another great addition. Aspen Adams lives in Lake Tahoe, working for her aunt Max as a private investigator. A local news anchor Gloria Morning, starts receiving fan mail stating he killed the person for her glory. Aspen is determined to solve the murders, and keep Gloria safe. Aspen's estranged sister, who is a drug user, dropped off her teen daughter, and she and Aspen are growing close. This book just kept me enthralled from beginning to end. I have always enjoyed Ms. Gerber's books, and this book does not disappoint. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. This is not a cozy mystery series, but to me it was a nice change. I highly recommend this book for people who enjoy mysteries.
This series definitely needs to be on your TBR list! An intelligent, strong and stubborn female main character is surrounded by other strong, intelligent characters with realistic flaws to make them relatable. The type of characters that you would like for neighbors, friends and family to be. The plot line is strong and well written to keep you entertained and flipping pages to see what happens next. In this book, Aspen finds herself drawn into her friend's weird connection with a serial killing stalker and needs to figure it out soon or she may find herself the next victim! You could read this as a stand alone book, but I would start with the first book in the series as it will enhance your enjoyment significantly!
Fan Mail Is the 2nd instalment in the “An Aspen Adams” Suspense series by Daryl Wood Gerber. If you haven’t read Desolate Shores yet, you can read as a standalone.
An adoring fan and a string of murders: a demented show of love that leaves no one safe . . .
Local celebrity news anchor Gloria Morning is used to receiving declarations of love and praise in her weekly fan letters, but when a Lake Tahoe doctor is murdered and she gets an anonymous note telling her it was done for her glory, her appreciation turns to panic. Unsure of where else to turn, she enlists the help of novice private investigator Aspen Adams. But as the body count grows and the murderer remains a mystery to both her and the police, Aspen discovers she’s gotten closer to the killer than she ever imagined, and now she must risk everything she holds dear to stop the killings, including her own life . . .
I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it in one sitting. It was entertaining, suspenseful and full of twists and turns. I thought all the characters were well developed. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
I was super excited to receive Fan Mail (An Aspen Adams Novel of Suspense Book 2) and read more about Aspen and was especially thrilled to see her niece, Candace, featured more prominently in Fan Mail. I enjoy Candace very much. She's a sensitive teenager who is an excellent side-kick to Aspen.
I like how Aspen attempts to navigate being a parent to Candace, and I chuckle at some of their typical parent-child dialogue and interactions.
Daryl Wood Gerber is crafty in setting her book's plot, which has many twists and turns that are interesting and believable. The setting in Lake Tahoe is engaging, and I love the small-town feel that it brings to the book. The story reads fast and is a well-written suspense novel with good, solid characters. I enjoy reading books that have strong feel leads. This book has a hint of romance. I love the book cover, as well.
Fan Mail is the second book in the Aspen Adams series, but it can be read as a standalone book. I would recommend reading both these books. I look forward to reading more about Aspen, Candace, Nick, and the dogs too!
I received a free copy of this book however, my review is entirely voluntary. Although Fan Mail is the second Aspen Adams book, I did not have trouble stepping into this series. Aspen's friend, Gloria, is receiving notes indicating a serial killer is finding victims among those who have wronged her in some way. PI Aspen and her police officer boyfriend, Nick, are on the hunt through a myriad of suspects. The characters are flawed, funny and very likable. The mystery has a ton of twists and turns. Definitely a page turner. I love a book that keeps my guessing and Fan Mail certainly did just that. I highly recommend Fan Mail to mystery lovers and look forward to book three.
Looking at the cover and description, I was expecting more of a thriller. To my delight, this is a lovely cozy mystery! I do love both genres, however there is just something special about a cozy mystery!
This was my first read by Daryl Wood Gerber but I definitely can't wait to read more! My only criticism would be that I guessed the killer quite quickly, however that did not detract from the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!
A very enjoyable book with plenty of twists and turns. I never read the first book in the Aspen Adams novels, not that it mattered. Nor had i read any previous novels by Daryl Wood Gerber, but judging by this book, i am keen to read more. This book certainly kept me in suspense. Every time i thought it had it figured out, so there was another twist. Recommended.
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers. This is my honest review, which i have voluntarily given.
Good second book
Can Mail is another good book by Me Gerber. While it's not really a cozy mystery, it is a mystery with all the suspects you could want. The twists and turns had me confused u til the end. If you are looking for something new to read, I recommend this book and author.
This is the second book in the Aspen Adams series by Daryl Wood Gerber.
Aspen gets a message from her doctor telling her to call her back. She assumes it is because of her last appointment and suspects bad news. The bad news ends up being that her doctor has been murdered! Then a local news anchor, Gloria Morning, receives a note saying the woman was murdered in her name. Gloria then asks Aspen, a private investigator, to look into the death. Of course, this puts her at odds with boyfriend and detective, Nick who is looking into the death for the police department.
I was kind of surprised at how “in a relationship” Aspen Adams and Det. Nick Sharper were when this book started. I think they had barely gotten together at the end of the last book, DESOLATE SHORES. Her investigating kind of puts a hitch in their relationship as she goes into situations Nick asks her to stay out of.
Then another murder occurs and along with it another note. The suspect list keeps growing and with it so does the tension. I think the author does a great job of upping the suspense while also trying to keep her characters grounded. The situations feel like you are peeking into real life and not just “reading a story.”
There is a lot of actions in this and like in the last story, her niece, Candice, gets involved in the drama, much to Aspen’s dismay. Aspen’s sister also tries to get Candice back which adds to the mounting tension as it builds.
Aspen may be new to the PI biz but she is a cracker jack character that just makes you want to keep reading. We root for her and her relationships with Nick, Candice and her job.
I totally enjoyed this book and can’t wait for book three to come out.
This book can be read as a standalone even though their relationship started in book one. I would probably tell you to read book one for some backstory about characters if you get stumped about relationships at anytime while reading this. This is definitely a series you should read from book one.
If you like cozy mystery, thrillers, suspense and detective fiction, I think you would really enjoy this. Check it out!
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
Fan Mail is the second book in the Aspen Adams Suspense series. The descriptions create a clear, vivid picture in readers’ minds of Lake Tahoe, where the story takes place. Aspen, the least experienced in an investigative capacity at her aunt’s private detective agency, takes on the responsibility of finding out who is sending her friend notes that are tied to a string of murders. With a list of probable suspects and accidents that might be related to Aspen’s investigation, will she be able to identify the real culprit? Is she in danger of suffering serious bodily injuries that could result in death?
The characters are well-developed, believable and dealing with real-life issues that readers can relate to, such as parenting a teenager and handling a romantic relationship. Aspen has taken on the guardianship of her niece which has brought its own set of challenges. Aspen’s boyfriend is a detective, who is also investigating the homicides. Does this cause a conflict of interest between Aspen and her boyfriend? Is one person or a serial killer responsible for these heinous actions?
Daryl Wood Gerber has written a gripping and exciting suspenseful murder mystery that grabs readers’ interest from the beginning. Each chapter finishes with a hook that entices readers to turn the page and find out what happens next. As the story progresses, the increasing tension and suspense culminate into a final hair-raising encounter. A number of references to events that occurred in the first book, Desolate Shores, are pertinent as to characters’ reactions to current circumstances and also piqued my interest in reading the first installment in the series.
This is book #2 of the Aspen Adams Suspense series by Daryl Wood Gerber. I did not read book number one so at first, I was a bit confused about the characters and why they did certain things. But it wasn’t hard to get into the book and learn about the characters at all. The series takes place in Lake Tahoe, Nevada with Aspen working as a private investigator. Aspen’s boyfriend Nick is a detective with the county. Aspen’s doctor is found murdered at the very beginning of the book and Aspen is beside herself as the doctor had some very important test results that Aspen was waiting on. Gloria Morning is a reporter that receives a fan letter and it indicates that the murder was done with an association to her. Then a second murder takes place and Gloria receives the same letter. With the second letter Gloria becomes frantic and petrified as to what is going on in their town. After receiving the letters Gloria then hires Aspen to discover who is sending her these letters and why are they sending them to her.
There are many twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. I love to read books where there is a woman sleuth and a difficult puzzle to solve. This is a well written suspense murder mystery that keeps you wanting to continue reading the book all in one sitting. Just when you think you have figured out a piece of the puzzle as to who was the murderer the author takes you in a completely different direction. I am going to go back and now read book #1.
Fan Mail by Daryl Wood Gerber is the second novel in the Aspen Adams suspense novel series. I enjoyed Desolate Shores, the first novel in this series, and I was looking forward to reading Fan Mail. Fan Mail did not disappoint and I've become a huge fan of the series. Aspen Adams, the main character, is a family therapist who has relocated to Lake Tahoe to work as a process server with her aunt who is a private investigator. Since the last book, she has started a relationship with Nick, a detective with the sheriff's office, and gained custody of her teenage niece, Candace. The novel begins with Aspen receiving a strange call from her gynecologist. Her doctor then turns up dead and Gloria Morning, a local news celebrity, receives a letter saying that the murder was done for her. This starts a rash of murders done for Gloria and she asks Aspen to try to solve the mystery. I'm a fan of a good suspense novel and this book kept me enthralled until the end. I love the character of Aspen and the addition of Nick and Candace added more nuances to her. Nick pretends that he doesn't want Aspen involved in solving the crimes but he values her insight. Even Candace gets involved with helping solve the crime. The other characters in the book are interesting and there were multiple suspects to consider. Also, the setting of Lake Tahoe adds interest to the story. I highly recommend this series and look forward to the next one.
In this next book of the series Aspen and her niece are getting into a routine and all seems to be back to normal for the pair. Aspen is back to working cases at her Aunt's P.I. firm and she is happy to be dating Nick. When local news anchor Gloria Morning starts receiving some weird fan mail that seems to coincide with recent murders she asks Aspen to look into things for her. Aspen is on the job when another murder occurs and another note is sent. Aspen has little to go on and an abundance of people to look into. who could be killing all these people and what connection do they have with Gloria. Aspen realizes that she is going to have to delve deeper into the people on her suspect list to find the answers she seeks. Not one person seems to be the front runner when it comes to suspects which is making it harder for Aspen. She really wants to help her friend and doesn't like that she has been unable to come up with any real clues or suspects. Follow along as Aspen never stops in her quest to find a killer, will she do so before someone else ends up dead or find herself in danger along the way. I loved this book and was excited to read it, the characters are well developed and I already feel as if I truly know them. I hope there will be another book!!!
I received an ARC of this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A well written flowing suspense murder mystery that keeps you turning pages and second guessing yourself! Aspen Adams who used to practice child psychology moved to Tahoe and is a Private Eye in her aunts PI Firm while taking care of her 14 year old niece, Candice, who likes to put herself in the investigation with Aspen. She is too young to know so much Aspen feels and tries to keep her out of everything. When Aspen's doctor is found murdered she is beside herself since the doctor had some test results that were important to Aspen. But when reporter Gloria Morning received a fan letter that said it was done for her glory, she starts to feel weird. And when a second murder happens and the same letter is sent to Gloria, not she is frantic and hires Aspen to get to the bottom of who is sending her these notes every time someone is found dead. To do that Aspen has to try to fit puzzle pieces together to see what the victims could possibly have in common and what do they have in common with Gloria? How do these pieces fit together. The author so deftly provides the back story of the characters so we are not left guessing about them. This is a page turning book that keeps you trying to figure out the whodunit to the end. I received an ARC from the author but opinion expressed here are strictly my own.
Fan Mail is the second book in the Aspen Adams Suspense series and is I think even better than the first book. Daryl Wood Gerber has a knack for keeping you on the edge of your seat with her spine tingling suspense in this book.
Aspen once again is thrust into the middle of an investigation with one right after another murder and her client Gloria is getting mysterious notes that are tied to the murders. How are they all tied together and can Aspen help Gloria find who is sending her the notes and why? Aspen needs to find answers but can she or will her snooping put her in danger?
I like how this book has many outstretching fingers connected to a central person. You find so many questions just like Aspen and her boyfriend Nick do with so many possibilities. I like a story that keeps you wondering and guessing to the end. So many suspects could be the murderer but the end was surprising. This is a page turner that you will not want to put down.
I really enjoyed this book and recommend it if you like suspense.
I received an ARC from the author to read for my honest opinion and review.
Aspen Adams is working hard to become a PI. She certainly has the instinct and the attention to detail to become a great detective. I know that she's worried about her niece who lives with her. When Aspen is asked to find who is committing murder to honor and protect Gloria Morning, a local news anchor, she says yes. I liked how Aspen will do what's necessary to find this crazed killer. Her love for Candace, her niece, is sweet and protective. Their interaction gives a different point of view to the case. Nick Sharper, her boyfriend, is employed by the Sheriff's Department and he's working the case. The evidence doesn't give them anything definite to point to the killer. The letters to tell them that it's the same killer. What could these victims have possibly done to Gloria? This mystery kept me on the edge of my seat. The dialogue is sharp and to the point. The twists and turns were nonstop. There were numerous suspects and the clues confusing. Daryl Wood Gerber has written an action packed and suspenseful story. I could stop reading until I knew who the culprit was. I like Aspen. What a great character. I want more stories.
This is a solid thriller that builds some good suspense, has an interesting premise, and went between sympathetic characters in a way that forced me to keep reading later than planned each night.
I am unfamiliar with this author and didn't realize it was the 2nd book in a series but that did not make the story hard to follow. Gerber is clearly a talented writer and someone I will seek out in the future. I did feel that I was missing a little backstory, but that only made me want to find the first book. The plot was not lacking without having read it. It was refreshing to see such strong relationships between aunts and nieces, a dynamic that can sometimes be stronger than mother and daughter. This book has a female powerhouse of characters who strive to find their inner strengths while hunting a killer. Overall, I recommend this thriller that doesn't give it all away too early and even when you think you know, you'll question yourself.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me an ARC for my humble opinion. It was a joy.
What a captivating story full of action and mystery, set in the picturesque Lake Tahoe area! Aspen, a private investigator trying to juggle her career and her new parental role with her teenage niece, is hired by a friend to investigate some weird fan letters and finds herself investigating so much more. With multiple victims, multiple suspects, and questionable motives and alibis, Aspen tries to find the letter writer and the murderer(s). I love how this book moves at the perfect pace and kept me guessing the whole way through. I had a hard time putting it down, because I just had to know what Aspen and her sheriff boyfriend Nick would uncover next. I really like the developed characters and the interactions between Aspen and her niece Candace enrich this well-written, suspenseful mystery. I already can't wait for the next book to see what happens with Gwen, her new husband, and her restaurant!
I received an advance copy of this book. This review contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
Intriguing
If you are a “Cozy Mystery” reader you are going to really enjoy this one. Aspin, the main character is written so well that you will be rooting for her. She and her niece Candace make an unusually unique team.
Aspin gets involved in not just one murder but several and she follows the clues until she get this right person for the crimes. She uses all of the skills she learned as a therapist and now as a detective to solve these mysteries and to help the victims survivors.
Because of the way Ms. Gerber sets up the scenes it is easy to visualize everything that is going on in the book. You will be so involved that you will read the book in one or two sittings.
Somehow I missed the first book in this series but I will be reading the first one and any that follows.
