The Valley of Flames

Rate this book
I thought I knew what I was fighting for. I thought I knew what I'd already lost. But it turns out the shrouded folk have been keeping a secret even more horrifying than I could have imagined.

To make up for my failure years ago, I'll travel right into their hellish realm. I'll sacrifice every happiness I've found and the men I've found it with. My life means nothing if I can't see this mission through.

My men aren't so willing to let me go, though, despite my past sins. And the game the shrouded folk are playing now has consequences that reach far beyond our little group. As the barriers between our world and theirs start to thin, will any of us make it out of this war alive?

*This is the final book in the Moriarty's Men series.*

I really enjoyed this series. It started off really strong with our criminal mastermind Jemma Moriarty with her trusty right hand man, Bash, meeting the London trio and deceiving them into committing their own heist. Now, we’re here at the last book of the series with all of them allying together to put a stop to the shrouded folk and their bid to take over the world.

Moriarty really pushed Sherlock off a cliff, huh. We pick up a few days after that cliffhanger and find Moriarty and Bash in Tokyo, preparing to cross over in the shrouded folk’s realm. Little do they realize that it’s only a matter of time before Sherlock, John, and Garrett are rearing to find Moriarty again. They realize the truth behind her actions and want to help her regardless of the danger. So, into the shrouded folk lands they go to discover truths that are more and more unsettling. Saving Moriarty’s sister is the priority for her but the larger world is in just as grave danger with the shrouded folk making plans to build a bridge to permanently connect the two worlds. Moriarty and the London trio, again, find themselves in an awkward and tense situation but must push through to save themselves and everyone they care for.

I will say that the plot flowed better in this book than the last. It still wasn’t what I wanted compared to the first and second books, but I still enjoyed the finale of the series nonetheless. The analytical thoughts and writing meshed well with the developing emotional side as the series progressed, and I think that was exemplified the most in this last book. We get to see conclusions, confessions, and all kinds of emotional and relationship development here alongside the action and work that went into taking down the shrouded folk.

Moriarty doesn’t know if she has the capacity for love, but knows that she cares very deeply for her men. She’s unused to the tenderness and affection they continue to show her and it only grows on her as they express their love for her. She’s opened herself up to the possibility that there could be more of their relationship after their mission is over with her four men. We see each of her men come to the same conclusion that they want to continue knowing this magnificent and intriguing woman, and that each of the men connects with her in different, but vital, ways that they cannot. Hence, the series name of Moriarty’s Men.

Although I felt that the build up to the end was going well, it seemed somewhat anticlimactic at the end to just have it all over in a single chapter. The shrouded folk didn’t even show up there. There was no resolution with that except that they were banished from their world for the time being.

Regardless, I would still recommend the series in general for people that like intelligent FMCs that actually can think with their brains and not their vagina *although she does get a fair amount of action and isn’t shy about it* along with four dashing, charming, and unique men. It’s the first of any Eva Chase series I’ve actually finished so props to me. Her writing and characters have definitely improved and I’m looking forward to more of her books.

When I started this series I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I've never read the original Sherlock books, I never watched the BBC series and all the knowledge I have comes from stuff I read in other books. However, it was love at first sight and the series sucked me in from the very first page. Today it was time to pick up the last book in this series. Which means that this is officially the third complete Eva Chase series I finished.

Plot wise it's certainly not her best work. The first two books were really clever and interesting, but I think the third and fourth book felt different. The plot was still exciting and I still enjoyed reading it, but I just liked all the scheming and plotting and maybe also the "race" between Moriarty and Sherlock in the first two books more than the two books forming the epic finale. However, plot isn't all that makes a book.

For me interesting characters are just as important, or maybe even more important. And this group of characters might be my favorite bunch of characters ever. There was literally no one I didn't like or couldn't connect with. They all had interesting backstories and personalities and they all brought something different to the tale. And what I liked most of all is that those characters were intelligent and really acting like it. No stupid for the sake of drama. Most of the drama was caused by intelligence and expressing emotions not being the best combination. (I recognize that...)

Moriarty is an amazing leading lady. Yes, she's a criminal mastermind and don't ask how she earned her money, but like the guys figured out: it's not about power or greed. It's about helping the world and most of all her sister. It's easy to connect with her and to root for her, despite her questionable methods to reach her goals.

It are however the guys I'm most of all in love with. Bash needed to grow on me, but he's supportive and sweet, even though he's a hitman. Sherlock feels very much Sherlock as I heard him to be. I like how his brain and emotions work so differently and I like how Chase also acknowledged his relationship with Watson. In Watson I most of all loved the conflict. He's the sweetest and most caring of the guys, but he has this adrenaline longing that makes him dangerous too. And then there's Garrett. Garrett is loyal, passionate and fierce. Just how I like my man.

So, if Chase ever decides to come up with another case for these characters to solve, I'll happily reconnect with them. I'm truly gonna miss this gang.

The Valley of Flames is the final book in the series. To date, I've finished reading 12 of her completed series, and I can tell you that the ending to this one was predictable, always with the same aspect and goal as Chase's previous RH series. At least on the romance side and the similarity of the leading female character's strength and personality.

But, story-wise, it was one of a kind. By the way, Jemma made me think of Sorsha in the Flirting with Monsters series. They are both brilliant and sassy. On the other hand, I don't see a strong sentiment linking Sherlock and John towards Jemma. She is better off with just Bash and Garrett.

Anyway, I enjoy the journey around the globe. The series first started in Europe before venturing to South America, Asia, and the Middle East and finished off where we first started. I also like that we get to visit the shrouded world and drag Sherlock, the sceptical, into the supernatural world. We rarely get to venture into both worlds in Eva Chase's series. Well done, Chase!

Fun and unique series

I really enjoyed reading this author’s twist on Sherlock Holmes and company. The whole idea of a supernatural crime fighting group was unique and kept me engaged in a market that is flooded with cookie cutter stories. I think my favorite thing about this series is the way the author had managed to capture the mannerisms and speech of the various characters. They aligned so well with Doyle’s original work that if I didn’t know names, I would be able to tell that I was reading a Sherlock Holmes character. Overall the series was fantastic and imaginative! I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys classic retellings with RH twists.

This series was bizarre. It started out well But it doesn't hold interest for long. The whole Shroud things get very boring. Also this was barely a RH series😂 She does have a physical relationship with all the 4 guys but Only Bash seems to be emotionally involved with her. Garrett mentions that he loves her once but nothing out his countenance feels that way and finally John and Sherlock seem to be in love with each other.🤣 So it would've been much better if Jemma only ended up with Bash. He is only one actually best suited for her.

What a fantastic series

I grew up reading the Sherlock Holmes mystery and loved them dearly. This series with its spin on the standard Holmes mystery is absolutely fantastic. she did such a fabulous job of capturing Holmes Watson and lestrade perfectly. I highly recommend this series.

Fantastic

What do you do when you finish reading the best rh series you've ever read? You hunt down everything else that Eva Chase has written that you haven't read yet. Off to do that now. She better get to writing, I'm starting to run out of my fix! 😂

Four Stars

I really struggled on what to rate this one. I LOVE this series and thought it was written exceptionally well. All other Sherlock books will be compared to this series. That being said there were just too many typos for 5 stars. I also feel like you can see some growth from the author in this series compared to previous series. Bravo on such a great job on these books!

Satisfying ending

This was a difficult series to finish because you can't have the resolution be over to quickly, simply, or have it downplayed. I think Ms. Chase did an excellent job concluding this story and definitely has a fitting ending. Very happy!

This book series started out really strong, but I really started to loose interest starting half way through book 3. Medium Burn. Different twist to Sherlock Holms but it was a good idea. I just lost interest in the Shrouded Folk.

I really thought the main climactic scene in the book/series was rushed.

Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

The time has come, The Valley of Flames is the fourth and final book in the Moriarty's Men series and it was a perfect ending to a very good series, I loved it.

Jemma has been preparing for this day every since she was able to escape the cult, it's time to stop the shrouded folk and bring down their twisted cult. After her betrayal, Jemma really has to count on her right-hand man, Bash, in order to pull off this grand plan. However, Jemma doesn't realize that the shrouded folk have a bigger plan in play and she and Bash might not be able to take them down alone.

I am very sensitive to the characters I read about, especially if I love a book. I dive deep into their world and get very attached to the characters, as well as invested in their futures. So, after the events at the end of book three, I was terrified to read what Jemma's fate would be. While I did have stressful moments Eva has done a wonderful job with the story, the growth of all the characters so far and the story itself was so compelling, I read The Valley of Flames in one setting. The best part about the story was the complicated relationships between Jemma and everyone, not only are things not black and white but Jemma has shown such growth because of the men in her life and she has affected them in positive ways as well.

The Valley of Flames is an excellent ending to a series with adventure, masterminding, emotional situations, analytical thinking, a major plot twist, and relationship drama to make the story interesting. All of my questions have been answered and while I hate saying goodbye I enjoyed the ending more than I could have hoped for.

Jemma Moriarty is determined to rid the world of the shrouded folk and rescue her sister even if that means she has to sacrifice everything and everyone dear to her in order to achieve it. However, these guys around her (Sherlock, Watson, Garrett and Bash) are not prepared to leave her alone and are insistent on helping - can this collection of friends/lovers make it out of this dangerous situation alive and save the world from total domination?

This is the last book in this series and neatly wraps up the events and the relationships between all of the members of this unorthodox group of friends. In it, they will come to terms with the relationships between themselves as well as wrap up the story of Jemma, her sister Olivia, Bash and his family background as well as how things will be for them all going forward. A few surprises as well as a lot of conclusions to story segments that had been introduced in earlier books in the series. I loved the ending which was how I would have wanted the series to end. Well written and easy to understand, this contains some sexual content involving multiple partners who may (or may not) be of the same sex.

What happens when all your carefully plotted plans don't follow their hoped for path? Jemma has a few hiccups throw her way in this brilliant series conclusion that makes you want to stand up and cheer! She does her best to roll with those twists and struggles to keep her guys safe. But with feelings being thrown into the mix things just complicate all of her careful machinations. We see some different sides come out to play with all of these characters and it makes you flip through the pages rather quickly. From start to finish this series has been a whirlwind of matching wits and dueling emotions. It's a fast paced thrill ride that you'll happily buckle up for. I loved the epilogue! It gave me everything that I could have wished for. Ms. Chase always delivers these cleverly crafted plots that just strengthen the characters and captivate her audience! It's such an artform the way in which she writes! 💗💗💗💗

I thought the finale to this series was fantastic. After the ending of the last book, with Sherlock shoved over a cliff, it was hard to see how Moriarty and the three Londoners would come back together. There are some creepy moments when Jemma pays a visit to the world of the Shrouded Ones. There are plenty of scenes between Jemma and her men to keep the sexual tension going. The whole story is wrapped up nicely with a big bow, though there is also some sadness.

If you haven't started reading this series yet I would recommend you get book 1 and jump in! I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

In the final book of Moriarty's Men we were left with a literal cliffhanger in the last installment. Jemma finds herself searching for her sister who she has been thought dead since her childhood. Finding clues to her location Jemma is determined more than ever to save her sister from the shrouded folk and will risk everything to do it. She soon realizes that she doesn't need to sacrifice her feelings for the men who have come to be her cornerstones and learns how she can get further with them supporting her than going it alone. Bordering on the line of all for nothing and getting everthing you desire this book will leave you breathless and wanting more.

Incredible Ending!

Wow! What an incredible ending to an incredible series! This book was filled with so much action and adventure it had my heart racing. I could feel myself gripping my chair so hard my fingers turned white. Not only was it action packed, it was full of love. The way Jemma had grown emotionally was so beautiful. It was like the Grinch. Her heart grew 100 sizes by the end of the book. And the way she showed it at the end of the book was beautiful. It made me cry...in a good way. This is a must read! I absolutely loved it!

This has been a very intriguing series. I was really wondering how the author would bring a conclusion to it all. The loose ends are tied and you have an ending that fits the unique storyline.

She is very smart and controlled for the most part but has now let these men into her life and her heart. They have all changed thru their experiences together. I really liked the ending and that the author didn't make it feel too perfect.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

Could not have been more disappointed so much confusion and aimless running around. This whole book was filled with gratuitous sex as they raced against time trying to save her sister and humanity. Repetitive to the point you could skip full chapters and miss nothing. A sad end to a series making the shrouded the most boring of villains with nothing explained to justify their existence or why they were worshiped.

Just wow! This is such wonderful for the finale to this series that I have adored all the way through. I love the spin Ms Chase has put onto Sherlock and Moriarty. The finale is certainly the highligh to this series. It's a real rollercoaster of a read. So much suspense, tons of action, twists and turns galore. I found myself compulsively turning the pages, it was impossible to put down. I love the interaction between Jemma and her men. Fantastic series.

What a wonderful ending to this tale. I must admit, I was a bit sceptical about it when it first started. I mean, Moriarty, a sexy redhead? Sherlock, Watson and Lestrade all working together with Moriarty and her right hand man, Bash, fighting against a cult of otherworldly figures to save mankind. The many twists and turns throughout the series keep you guessing and eager for the next page!

Such a fun twist on Sherlock Holmes

I really loved how Eva Chase told this story with a female MC and she was not good or bad but kind of gray with a heart of gold. Such a cool twist on Sherlock Holmes and a great ending to Jemmas story
