Fascinating! Many stories I had not heard before, several I already knew. Book is from 1993, so there are updates on a couple of the unsolved mysteries.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book considering the reviews were all over the place. Maybe that helped me to go in with the bar lowered and instead expect simply to be entertained. I didn't hope to read earth shattering or life changing stories. Imagine the Travel Channel's TV show Mysteries at the Museum was reincarnated as a book and you'll know precisely what you'll be getting when you read this. No single story is explored in great depth, rather each is presented in broad strokes, enough to whet the readers appetite but stops short of wrapping it up with a shiny bow of conclusion. But like I said I liked this book. I enjoyed reading most of the stories. As would be expected with any collection some topics appealed to me, others not so much. The section on unsolved murders was fascinating and I plan to do further research as they piqued my curiosity. The one thing I will mention is the editing grated on my nerves. I guess, I ought to say lack of editing grated my nerves. I lost count of the numerous errors while reading BUT I decided I can't fault the author and content because the editor wasn't very effective.
The book is very interesting but slow, and a bit outdated. Published in 1993 a lot of things have changed. The author also uses some pretty weird wording at times such as calling a killer of a little girl a “slayer” who “slayed her. Call a murderer a murder. Otherwise its a good starting point for Michigan lore and urban legends and dark history.
Some of the stories are covered in other books, but that should not discourage readers from pursuing this book. It is a worthy collection of stories about real events spanning many unusual topics including UFO's, Bigfoot, strange disappearances, murders and ghosts. An entertaining book to read.
Campy, funny, creepy, puzzling, frightening— this book of true Michigan stories has it all. For most sections of this book, don't read before bed if you scare easy.
A good ADD skip through some interesting Michigan stories. It serves as a good place to start skimming to find stories that may be worth reading more about. The author tries not to take any sides in debates like "does bigfoot really exist?" but in doing so, some of the mysteries made the book just on the say-so of one or two eye-witnesses. Not all of the stories are supernatural / extraterrestrial. There was a whole section on unsolved Michigan murders that was particularly interesting.
Found this book in the Paranormal section, it has a mix of unsolved crimes and spooky goings on. There were 70 stories covering missing people, murder, ghosts, big foot, ufos, mediums, and disappearing ships. There were a few repeats from Murder, Michigan by the same author
