Heather Wells #1-2

SIZE 12 IS NOT FAT

Heather Wells Rocks!

Or, at least, she did. That was before she left the pop-idol life behind after she gained a dress size or two -- and lost a boyfriend, a recording contract, and her life savings (when Mom took the money and ran off to Argentina). Now that the glamour and glory days of endless mall appearances are in the past, Heather's perfectly happy with her new size 12 shape (the average for the American woman!) and her new job as an assistant dorm director at one of New York's top colleges. That is, until the dead body of a female student from Heather's residence hall is discovered at the bottom of an elevator shaft.

The cops and the college president are ready to chalk the death off as an accident, the result of reckless youthful mischief. But Heather knows teenage girls . . . and girls do not elevator surf. Yet no one wants to listen -- not the police, her colleagues, or the P.I. who owns the brownstone where she lives -- even when more students start turning up dead in equally ordinary and subtly sinister ways. So Heather makes the decision to take on yet another new career: as spunky girl detective!

But her new job comes with few benefits, no cheering crowds, and lots of liabilities, some of them potentially fatal. And nothing ticks off a killer more than a portly ex-pop star who's sticking her nose where it doesn't belong . . .

SIZE 14 IS NOT FAT EITHER

Former pop star Heather Wells has settled nicely into her new life as assistant dorm director at New York College—a career that does not require her to drape her size 12 body in embarrassingly skimpy outfits. She can even cope (sort of) with her rocker ex-boyfriend's upcoming nuptials, which the press has dubbed The Celebrity Wedding of the Decade. But she's definitely having a hard time dealing with the situation in the dormitory kitchen—where a cheerleader has lost her head on the first day of the semester. (Actually, her head is accounted for—it's her torso that's AWOL.)

Surrounded by hysterical students—with her ex-con father on her doorstep and her ex-love bombarding her with unwanted phone calls—Heather welcomes the opportunity to play detective . . . again. If it gets her mind off her personal problems—and teams her up again with the gorgeous P.I. who owns the brownstone where she lives—it's all good. But the murder trail is leading the average-sized amateur investigator into a shadowy world. And if she doesn't watch her step, Heather will soon be singing her swan song!

Librarian note: AKA Jenny Carroll (1-800-Where-R-You series), AKA Patricia Cabot (historical romance novels).

Meg Cabot was born on February 1, 1967, during the Chinese astrological year of the Fire Horse, a notoriously unlucky sign. Fortunately she grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, where few people were aware of the stigma of being a fire horse -- at least until Meg became a teenager, when she flunked freshman Algebra twice, then decided to cut her own bangs. After six years as an undergrad at Indiana University, Meg moved to New York City (in the middle of a sanitation worker strike) to pursue a career as an illustrator, at which she failed miserably, forcing her to turn to her favorite hobby--writing novels--for emotional succor. She worked various jobs to pay the rent, including a decade-long stint as the assistant manager of a 700 bed freshmen dormitory at NYU, a position she still occasionally misses.

She is now the author of nearly fifty books for both adults and teens, selling fifteen million copies worldwide, many of which have been #1 New York Times bestsellers, most notably The Princess Diaries series, which is currently being published in over 38 countries, and was made into two hit movies by Disney. In addition, Meg wrote the Mediator and 1-800-Where-R-You? series (on which the television series, Missing, was based), two All-American Girl books, Teen Idol, Avalon High, How to Be Popular, Pants on Fire, Jinx, a series of novels written entirely in email format (Boy Next Door, Boy Meets Girl, and Every Boy's Got One), a mystery series (Size 12 Is Not Fat/ Size 14 Is Not Fat Either/Big Boned), and a chick-lit series called Queen of Babble.

Meg is now writing a new children's series called Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls. Her new paranormal series, Abandon, debuts in Summer of 2011.

Meg currently divides her time between Key West, Indiana, and New York City with a primary cat (one-eyed Henrietta), various back-up cats, and her husband, who doesn't know he married a fire horse. Please don't tell him.

Upon reading this trilogy, I came to conclude that I am:
Extremely neurotic
Extremely dramatic
Extremely angsty

The series was very Nancy Drew slash CSI. The plot was actually very simple, one of those murder-she-wrote thingies where the central character gets muddled with some murder mysteries which she ended up solving, albeit being face to face with the murderer herself and almost being murdered.

Okay, what hit me was not the story itself but the farkin tone of the story. Heather Wells was so messed up, her life from being so hot nose diving to being so not. Her career as singing sensation went down the toilet when she finally refused to sing those vapid bubble pop teenybopping love songs, thus resulting with getting the kick from her record company. Then she walked in on her long time fiancé, her partner for ten years or something, getting head from another singer in their bedroom. Her mother, panicking that dear daughter won’t be making any more moolah without her singing career, stole her life savings and ran away with her manager hence leaving her to put up with a low paying job as a college dorm manager’s assistant just so she could pursue her education. Then her ex fiancé was engaged to the head-giving-singer after they’ve only been broken up for four months or so which he later married and impregnated shortly afterwards.

In the books, Heather Wells was fat, 28, bankrupt, dumped and was attempted to be killed several times. And yet, the whole tone of the story was so… light. Even when she was cut and bleeding all over. Even when she was dealing with her ex and a supposedly broken heart.

Are there really people who are like that?? People who can face one major fiasco after another and still not want to drown themselves in the bath tub?
It made resent myself from becoming so disgustingly emo when thrown into crisis.

I loved these books!
I got extremly annoyed at Heather at times, she kept getting told by multiple people to leave the murders alone, but she wouldnt listen.

I was very shocked about Reggie! At the end of the second book!
But i loved it!

I love all the charcters especially; Cooper, Reggie and Gavin! These 3 were ever so sweet! Especially Gavin in the second book! I was also hoping that by the end of the second book, Heather and Cooper would have gotten together, but nope. They are still just friends. But there is still hope!!

I love all the crime stories during the books! and I cant wait to read the next book!

I like Heather, she is a truly likable character and a great heroine.

I do think Meg Cabot is able to create a great female character and give her a defining quality of her own. Fortunately Heather is more than just being size 12 or 14, she has a personality and speaks to you on every page.

I still feel tears of laughter when I pick my copy up and read through it and am glad that there are a couple more in the series that I can read.

The two books are a great read and something that could easily translate onto TV if anyone wanted to do it.

Such a light and fun crime novel! I adored Heather's outlook on life and she was ridiculously funny. I know it's more of a 'fun' crime novel but ever since this I've been searching for more crime and mystery novels, hopefully with comedy as it makes it such a good read. I honestly can't wait for book 4!

It was so good that I didn't even realise it!

It has the most wicked and best mash of humour and crime combined I've read. Somehow I felt that this book didn't really feel teen. I don't know or remember if Cabot wrote this for teens or adult but heck it was funny and so entertaining to read.

I recommend the whole series!

A funny, entertaining and mysterious read.

I first read this in the school library and enjoyed it greatly. There were parts where I laughed out loud (Not at the murders, obviously!), much to the annoyance of our librarian.

I liked it a lot and recently found the series for pretty cheap so I brought it and am looking forward to enjoying it again.

4/5 dresses.

This book caught my attention because of the title. The story really didn't have much to do with the title, seeing as it was about a wannabe detective. I mean she brings up her weight every other page, but it's not what the book is actually about thank god.

It took me ages to finish this, it kinda feels a bit too formulaic, the first and second parts are basically the same story with different students getting killed.

Might read the third one, if only to find out what happens in Heather's love life.

Great book.
But the title has nothing to do with the story.
If I were in a book store and saw this book with that title I wouldn't even bother to pick it up.
But it was a gift and after reading what it was about I decided to read it and I am so glad I did.

These books are really poorly written but sorta fun. Sadly the story has nothing to do with the title. If you're looking for something more liberating about body image, I recommend FAT!SO?

I didn't have high hopes for this one, but it is actually a pretty good read, manages to be an entertaining if slightly predictable crime story. Worth a read.

A lighthearted read that presents a delightful female detective with a penchant for the quick discovery and a large kind heart felt throughout the story.
