I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4 mysterious stars!

This was such a fascinating and unique book! Ripe with Spanish mythology and gorgeous romance, I couldn’t help but fall in love with these characters. Jennifer managed to weave a stunning story of love, loss and drama, whilst also managing to keep the characters at the maturity level of teenagers, which I loved.

Ezra was such an interesting character; he was broken and rude and a little bit cruel, but he was also incredibly sweet once you got to know him, and really kind to some. I couldn’t help but learn to love him, bit by bit, and I really enjoyed watching his relationship with Ruby develop!

“You may think you’re ugly….You may feel ugly. But there’s nothing about you that is, not on the inside or out.”

The mystery and mythology aspects of the book were wonderful to read about, as I learnt about a whole new mythology in New Mexico, and the secrets and lies evident throughout the story managed to captivate me. I guessed the plot-twists pretty early on, but I still really loved the ‘twist’, and I thought that the fantasy elements perfectly wrapped up the story.

I also really loved the themes and messages about finding yourself and learning to love you for you. I found Ruby’s process in learning to love her appearance and her personality really touching, and Ezra also had some amazing character development. They were both really realistic characters, and they both acted their age, which was wonderful to read.

“we have free will. We decide whether or not to love each other. Here at least, we get to decide whether it’s right.”

Jennifer is definitely a really talented writer with fascinating ideas. I can’t wait to read some of her future books! Thank you to the author, publisher and BookSirens for the free copy :).

I understand I am a little late to enter this bandwagon. However, I am so happy I eventually did become a member of this super impressive, young adult, coming of age, urban fantasy fiction. I now hold a crush on all the actors & just can't wait for the series to be transformed into the next blockbuster film, like the Twilight set. It's all that a Twilight fan will desire. Here rather than vampires, you have mountain lions, which only brings the novel one cut up on the larger side.

The beginning of the novel was a tiny bit of a bore for me & then staring at the length, I believed I would never be capable of completing the title any time soon. But, once I was about 30% finished, I got into the groove & next I know, I have ended the whole work in one day. I wish the book's cover could have been expertly executed as it doesn't support its crux. Thanks to the writer, I am back to enjoying works in this particular style.

I want to express my thanks to BookSirens, the author & the publisher Bad Apple Books, for an ARC of this book.

There is no doubt, Jennifer G. Edelson can write. BETWEEN WILD AND RUIN has some brilliant descriptions of New Mexico and the mysterious Pueblo ruins found by a teen girl who has just moved to the small town of La Luna. There is an atmosphere of the unknown that feels alive.

That said, the teen angst, the insta-romances or possible romances between seventeen-year-old Ruby a Sheriff’s deputy, a badly scarred teen and a breathtakingly handsome young man was a bit much for me. Ruby was almost too unbelievable with looks beyond her years, but the emotional maturity of a much younger girl.

I really wanted to like this more, the mystery and spiritual legends were engaging, but I was disappointed in Ruby as a role model for young adults.

I think I'm the only one who didn't care for this book. In 3/4 of the book there's a HUGE amount of teenage angst and a young girl who says one thing and then does another. I forgive you and then a second later she's slamming the door in indignation. Everyone warns her to stay away from these ruins, so of course that's where she wants to take her daily naps. And 3 guys falling for her as soon as she moves to town? Give me a break. I didn't care for the ending either. I guess I'm too old for this book. 2 stars.

New Mexico comes alive on the pages of Between Wild & Ruin by Jennifer G. Edelson. This coming of age, paranormal romance is well crafted with a fast pace, architectural description and well developed characters. We meet Ruby, who has moved to the small town of La Luna following the untimely death of her mother. The circumstances of her arrival are revealed one little detail at a time, in the most appropriate way. Edelson is sure to allow the reader to peel back the layers of each character slowly, instead of relinquishing everything at once. Details like that gives this young adult novel maturity.

A genre I wouldn’t ordinarily pick up and read, this did remind me of the Twilight series, but with so much more investment into local lore. On that subject, it is a new and refreshing glance into a culture not often visited in literature. So, while this is a beauty meets the beast premise on the outside, it leaps beyond that with depth of indigenous cultures and the crossroads of ancient beliefs in the modern world.

Ruby’s path through making friends and gaining the attention of seemingly every incredibly handsome young man in the general vicinity is a little unbelievable. Edelson does not succeed in overcoming the trope of ‘new girl in town means fresh meat for all the single men.’ That aside, the pages keep turning as we meet Ezra, an otherwise bitter recluse outcast by the most of La Luna, whom Ruby is drawn to.

The best part about this relationship is the realism of it. Edelson does not paint this as if he is some otherworldly presence, drawing her in. Instead, Ruby is written as wanting to gauge this man for herself, wanting to know the truth behind the scars and the curmudgeonly outlook. In so doing, she breaks down the walls of Ezra one brick at a time, and it allows us to peek into the inner workings of Ruby’s mind. These little details make this tale of legends and spirits hold a firm foot in reality.

Truthfully, though it may not be a book I’d have pulled down from the shelves of a bookstore, it’s a marvelous read that reminded me of when I was a young teenage girl. Rushing to the library to find the next book in one of two series by Katherine Applegate, Between Wild & Ruin gave me that same gushy feeling, a smile always hidden as I scan the words and invest my time in Ruby and Ezra’s world. I look forward to what is to come and can’t wait for book two. This is a guilty pleasure in the best sense of the phrase.

Unfortunately this wasn’t one for me, I wasn’t keen on the insta-love, especially the fact a few young men suddenly are attracted the moment Ruby arrives in town. I enjoyed the descriptions of New Mexico and although I’ve never been it felt really clear in my head with the authors descriptions. Ruby herself although a teenager seems really immature and just not very likeable to me. So unfortunately this just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I keep going back and forth about whether this was a three or four star read. There's so much about it I have to admit I found hard to get into, but it was interesting enough by the end.

Between Wild and Ruin is some sort of weird combination of high school love triangle romance, Native American mythology, Beauty and the Beast, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If this sounds like an unusual combination, that's what it reads like as well.

Personally, I believe the first half of the book could have been a lot shorter. I'm not sure what story Edelson was trying to tell or make most prominent, but the love triangle didn't need to go on for the equivalent of 200+ pages, more than half the story.

The focus on boys in the story also rubbed me the wrong way. At first, it looks like there's going to be a lot more focus on the female friendship aspect between Ruby and Racine, but by the end of the story, this feels forced. On the other hand, at least one of the three main boys in the story are on almost every page, and this book barely passes the Bechdel test in my opinion.

In terms of the plot itself, I had an inkling of what was going on between Ezra and Leo from the beginning of the story, and I'm not sure I appreciated how this unfolded. I'm glad the fantasy element was brought in more in the second half, but I feel like Edelson needed to pick a theme and stick to it rather than jumping between a few different ones.

Despite my lukewarm feelings toward this novel, I have some interest in continuing with the second novel when it's out. It's not at the top of my list, and I'm not sure I'd spend money on it, but I do want to know what happens next.

Author: Jennifer G. Edelson
Genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance
Rating: 3/5
Review:
Between Wild & Ruin is a surprisingly intriguing story that brings out the curiosity of the readers in this enigmatic world of folklore, superstitions, and suspense.
After the untimely death of her mother, Ruby Brooks moves to the small town of La Luna of New Mexico. Filled with the history of wars, lore, and ruins, this town marks a new beginning for Ruby. Since her arrival, she receives a warm welcome from the people and gains the attention of three good-looking guys, Angel, a cop who fell for Ruby, at first sight, Ezra, a rude jerk with a mysterious past, and Leo, a guy who only appears around the ruins. Ruby finds herself drawn by these boys, folklores, and ruins, which calls for her.
At first, this book reminded me a lot of Twilight and Outlander, but later I realized how wrong I was. Jennifer G. Edelson definitely has amazing world-building and writing skills. I enjoyed the writing style, it is engaging and absorbing. The story is very descriptive and vividly drawn together.
At some point, I started feeling that most of the characters in this story are vague. During the first 200 pages, nothing happens. The story catches pace after that, so one needs to be patient through these 200 or so pages. I felt that the first half of this book has been too stretched, it could have been shortened. I felt most of the characters are okay, I liked Ezra's character the most (though I am not sure why!). Three guys were attracted to Ruby as soon as she moves into the town, I find that really unbelievable.
This is an interesting story that will be enjoyed by those who like reading YA Fantasy/Paranormal romance, but they need to have a lot of patience while reading this story. I am giving this book 3/5 because of the points I mentioned above.

Thank you for BookSirens and the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed are my personal opinion.

Score: 3.5 / 5

Story wise it does include captivating elements, it kept me entertained throughout and I was invested in the book to see where it leads to. I think Edelson's strength shines in the contemporary aspects of the book, as a coming of age story I fairly enjoyed it. It becomes wishy washy when we turn into the fantasy aspects of the book, there was too much telling. A better way of integrating the fantasy elements would've greatly solidified the book.

Highly enjoyed the enemies to lovers trope. The banter between Ezra and Ruby was entertaining and loved how their relationship develops. As for Ruby, at times her naivety and "people pleaser" persona frustrated me a bit, but at least the author added a lit bit of fire into her.

The side characters unfortunately were by far the worst aspect of the book. Here I'm talking about Ruby's "friends" at high school. I'm kind of sick of the mean girl trope and the fact that Ruby feels like she has to stick with this group of girls rather than be on her own.

All in all the writing was great and my hopes for book 2 is that Ruby calls out her "friends" for their behavior or at least gains the self confidence to leave them. Also would love to see a stronger more confident version of Ruby out of her own self.

Do I recommend? If you love Beauty and the Beast retellings with a Twilight Bella/TVD Elena MC than you'd enjoy this.

Revisiting YA paranormal romance after ages... :)
I really loved this story. Basically, it's not a new trope at all. We've all seen frail human/bad boy romances with a paranormal twist (reminded me so very much of the early Twilight frenzy). But I just lapped up the beautiful prose in this novel. The setting is quaint New Mexico with its ancient folklore and legends of beasts and spirits. Amidst all this is a seventeen year old new girl who falls quickly into a love triangle (more than a triangle really with all the enigmatic boys that lure her right and left).

I feel like saying anything more about the story would give away its charm. So do pick it up and be prepared for lots of talk of mystery and legend and romance. I'm eager to get my hands on the next part in the series. :-)

I was provided an opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback (via the BookSirens).

The author did a wonderful job of creating the world this story took place in. However, I didn't really enjoy this one because to be honest I didn't think the main character was likeable. I was a little past the halfway point of the book and I felt like all that happened was she was caught in an instalove love square, alternating between being happy and fighting with them.

ARC received via BookSirens in exchange for my honest review.

Between Wild and Ruin initially caught my eye with its pretty white and blue cover, and after that, with its promise of New Mexico folklore and history. Going in, I knew that this is a YA romance above all else, and I knew that I'd be in for some teen drama. But man, I don't know if I willingly signed up for ALL OF THE ANGST.

Off the bat, the descriptions of the book's New Mexico setting are beautiful, and I came out the other side feeling like I know a lot more about that area and its history and folklore. While the writing isn't perfect, it was also done well enough to stick it out and look past any niggles that might have cropped up. But in the end, it just wasn't enough, you know? The rich and beautiful folklore and setting take a hard back seat to the book's MC, Ruby's, constant dramatics and frankly annoying childishness.

I get that Ruby's going through some really, really tough stuff, and I get that she's a teenaged girl with zero hormonal and emotional control and all, but there are countless YA books out there that have MCs in similar situations who aren't completely insufferable. Ruby's wacky teenage-ness is probably close to the truth (I honestly think I was a bit like Ruby as a teenager, but just a bit), but what I've found is that the teenage reality is not so fun to read, really. Make Ruby relatable and identifiably a teenager, yes, but make her character easier to like by allowing for logic and rationality to save the day once in a while.

Iffy behaviour from an MC can be excused to an extent if there's sufficient personal growth, but that doesn't happen in this case either, and by the end, Ruby is just as much of a mess as she was at the start, albeit with a bit more information on where she stands in the world. It does feel like her story arc is being left to be explored in more depth and her growth portrayed a bit more prominently in the second book (I hope), but that needs to happen to some degree in the first book as well to make sure readers return to the series.

On the plus side, compared to Ruby, the side characters (and especially the main love interest, Ezra) are all really okay. I can see a younger version of myself going totally googly-eyed at Ezra, for sure. While the other characters might be lacking in some respects, and none of them can really be called well-rounded, none of them stood out as being particularly terrible either. Except Marta. She's relentlessly terrible, but that's personality-wise and not necessarily writing-wise.

A final thought has to do with the layering of the different elements/genres in the book. The mythical/fantasy elements, instead of melding perfectly with the angsty teen romance and thereby bolstering it with depth, clash and fall flat. At times, it felt like reading two different books completely: one with a thoughtful MC finding her place in a world of wonder and magic (i.e. a well-constructed YA fantasy), and the other a tear-you-hair-out teen drama with an MC who couldn't care less about what wonders are happening in and around her, even if she likes yelling about it all the time (i.e. a teen romance with fantasy elements that serve only to propel the requisite misunderstandings and angst).

Ultimately, if Ruby had more natural reactions to events and feelings and stayed a bit more consistent as a decision-making human being, and if the folklore elements were more deeply woven into the character's growth and story instead of coming across as unintentionally superficial decoration, this book would have been more up my alley, but as it stands, it's unfortunately a miss for me.

Ruby Brooks and her Aunt Liddy's last year was a bit rough, so her Aunt Liddy decided that they both needed to get away. They packed up everything and moved to the small town of La Luna, New Mexico. It's one of those quiet towns where everyone knows everyone, including everything about them. It's a completely different surrounding than what they are used to, which could be exactly what they need to heal their hearts and their minds from the past year. Losing her mother really took a toll on Ruby, so getting close to anyone was going to be a bit hard.

Shortly after coming into town Ruby meets not one, but three guys. She doesn't want to get into any kind of relationship unless she knows it's what her heart really wants. With her heart still mending from her mother's death, she doesn't think that her heart is ready for anything. These boys are making it really hard though, between mesmerizing good looks, charm, and even mystery.

Instantly upon starting this book I was hooked, especially by the great detail the author put into her words. It made it really easy to picture the scene with which surrounded Ruby and her friends. It was like the haunting forest behind Ruby's house was right in front of me, and it made me want to hike through those trees myself. She really brought to life both the terrain, as well as the history that is New Mexico.

I couldn't figure out whether I liked Ruby or not, even through the entire book. I'm still thinking about it. At times I felt like she was timid and quiet, and afraid to voice what she really thought. Other times I felt like she was a completely different person, using her appearance or ability to flirt as a way to get what she wanted. It honestly made me feel like she just needed to be honest with herself, and with the boys she was interacting with. She also seemed very needy, like she expected everyone to drop whatever they were doing to help her or be with her. This was probably my least favorite characteristic of hers. She was however friendly, which made me want to like her more.

I really liked the other characters in the story, especially Angel and Ezra, two of the boys that Ruby interacted with on a daily basis. Angel was sweet, and just seemed like he wanted a fair shot to be with Ruby. Ezra on the other hand was mysterious, honest, and some times a little harsh. I liked him for this though, he didn't hold back, and he didn't seem to care what anyone thought of him.

I think my favorite part of this whole book was all of the folklore, and history that Edelson packed into the pages. I feel like I learned so much about this beautiful place, and it makes me want to pack up and visit New Mexico myself. I'm looking forward to reading more of this trilogy, and seeing where things go with Ruby and the mystery that is surrounding her. I will definitely be picking up more of her books in the future!

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own

Between Wild and Ruin, by Jennifer G. Edelson is a stellar paranormal coming-of-age romance. Ruby is about to begin her senior year of high school. She’s just recently moved to a small town in New Mexico from Los Angeles , along with her Aunt Liddy. Fleeing the ever present pain following her mothers tragic death Ruby’s and her aunt need to start their lives anew.

Ruby instantly becomes the center of the attention in the tiny, gossipy prone town of La Luna, New Mexico.Trying to get acclimated to her new school and the community, she thinks that be left alone is probably best. As the story picks up Ruby finds herself drawn to some of the local guys, and also forming bond with a small group of friends.

The sparks fly when she finds herself particularly captivated by a local boy. Ezra, is a moody, deeply mysterious boy, with a blunt sense of humor. Ruby just can’t seem to help herself and Is completely drawn to Ezra.

An independent girl, Ruby hikes out alone to sketch mountains and desert landscape.

While enjoying some ancient ruins, near her aunts house, Ruby encounters Leo.

Edelson’s writing is incredible atmospheric, engaging the reader in descriptive details of the rich New Mexico landscapes. This is paranormal romance that creatively blends historical fiction along with Native American lore. The writing flows seamlessly with captivating dialogue and a main protagonist that I completely related to.

Just "WOW"!!! There's nothing I love more than a book that makes the fine hairs on my arms rise. Well, maybe a book that's definitely impossible to put down. A book that makes me want look up pictures of places, meanings of words, history and folklore. Once in a while I run across authors that blend folklore and storytelling in a way that make it a little more magical, memorable and fun to read.
I really enjoyed the writing style of this author. It was very clear and concise. I don't read a lot of YA, only because the teenage angst is the story and that gets under my skin. That's not the case in this book. There's a bit of teenage drama but it's part of the storyline, not the whole.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like urban fantasy with a heavy folklore base you have to read this book.

5 stars for sure!!! This book took me through so many emotions and although I've never been to New Mexico, there was a sense of familiarity that increased with each page. I connected immediately to Ruby. Her disposition upon entering a new town, her way of using sketches for self expression, and her CURIOSITY above all took me back to teenage ME. Love presenting itself in strange forms in the most inopportune times. Never knowing which one to pick, and the options always being SO different that you have no clue what you're even looking for. I especially appreciate the respect put on the spirits/beings in the story. You can tell there was careful consideration taken. Thank you!

Looking forward to more works by this author, and hopeful there's a network series adaptation of this book! This fresh, original story is what tv needs right now, and with all the streaming services competing, they'll need quality content to keep their lead :)

*** 2.5 stars ***

The author draws out some very vivid imagery of New Mexico which was quite fascinating to imagine. I did really like the Spanish mythology elements in her as well. However for me, there was a lot of teen angst that occurs in this book (perhaps too much? Or maybe I'm too old now and past that stage in my life :( and there was something stopping me from connecting truly with the main character, Ruby. I'm personally not into insta-love type of books, so was not drawn to the idea that these young guys were suddenly so taken (and in love) with Ruby (especially since I couldn't see the appeal and connect to her). I probably won't be pursuing the next book in this series

I enjoyed this book!

The story is full of mythology and romance, with Ruby being a relatable uncertain teenage girl suffering from loss.

It was fascinating to read and learn about New Mexico history and mythology, and the story feels real, even with her gaining three romantic interests as soon as she arrives in town. I liked all the character's unique personalities, especially Ezra. I liked seeing him 'come out of his shell' as his relationship with Ruby grew.

I really related to the idea of learning to accept and love yourself for who you are, inside and out, throughout this story. I loved how Jennifer interwove this message through the mystery, romance and mythology in this story. The twists and turns were also amazing! I can't wait to read the next book!!

Intriguing and suspenseful, Between Wild & Ruin kept me guessing until the end. I really enjoyed the pace of the story, steady with some intense moments and lovely twist. The writing was stellar, the descriptives allowing me to create a complete picture in my mind, the characters are genuine and flawed, definitely three dimensional and not wooden or fake. Ruby is stubborn yet loyal and kind hearted leading lady which is really refreshing. I have to agree with the other reviews I've seen, this story is somewhat reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast but with a distinctively paranormal aspect as well.

I think readers that enjoy paranormal, romance and contemporary stories with an edge will love this book.

I absolutely loved returning to beautiful New Mexico around Santa Fe, and reading the descriptions of the mountains and the small town of La Luna, as seen through the eyes of Ruby, the narrator. Ruby's a struggling teen, missing her newly deceased Mom, but also cared for by her Aunt Liddy. Maybe a bit too much teen angst her and there, and "magic," but the characters are well developed and the story quite interesting, as Ruby is pursued by 3 very different young men. I found intrigue at the Pecos Monument, and loved the Indian folklore.

This supernatural romance had a unique, super imaginative premise and a great setting. I was completely taken with the Beauty and the Beast-style romance between two of the characters, which kept me turning the pages. It featured some standard YA supernatural romance cliches, and I wasn't a fan of some of the character behaviors, but none of that kept me from enjoying and absolutely inhaling this book. I'm definitely looking forward to more from this author.

Note: This Review contains NO spoilers

Intriguing and interesting! I am always fascinated with the varying folklore, mythology, and superstitions of various cultures. In this particular book, the story dives into Native American folklore and superstitions of New Mexico. And, just with its synopsis on the subject matter, I was pulled in. Of course, all that was woven into a young adult coming-of-age story. Yes, Between Wild and Ruin contained the above aforementioned elements with twists that makes for a captivating read.

Up front, this story is reminiscent of the fairytale classic Beauty and the Beast ... just with a young adult contemporary romantic twist. Yes, that means that there is a "love triangle" involved... Ha! However, the paranormal/fantasy elements that incorporate the folklore and superstition of the setting location, New Mexico, is well embedded into this story which makes for compelling and dramatic storytelling. And, this is one that got me turning the pages. Moreover, Between Wild and Ruin looks to be the beginning of a series, be it standalone or not, it is a fascinating read that fans of the genres will enjoy.

5 CRANKY STARS

This is a well written story that is a little different. At first, I thought it would be reminiscent of the “Outlander” novels, but it really isn’t. The storyline is set in today’s New Mexico which is the perfect setting for things otherworldly. Our characters are completely understandable and sympathetic. Thus, my 5-star review. I couldn’t put it down once I got started.

Our heroine, Ruby, has moved to La Luna, New Mexico with her Aunt Liddy. Of course, she is a senior in high school and not too happy to be in the middle of no where for her senior year. The first person she meets is a rude young man with a scarred face and a huge chip on his shoulder. His name is Ezra and he is a local descended from a long line of native Indians. Of course, because of his face, he doesn’t trust anyone in town. But Ruby is good hearted and only sees good in people, so she tries to befriend him and show him that looks aren’t everything. To complicate things, Ruby likes to hike in the mountains where she meets a mysterious handsome young man named Leo.

This is where the folklore of the area and the superstitions come into effect. Strange things happen in the town and when the assistant sheriff falls for Ruby, it becomes even more dangerous for her. Who will she choose, and will she solve the mystery of the ruin? You’ll have to read the book to get the answers

Such a fun read! I would definitely recommend for anyone who wants to escape into the mountains of rural New Mexico. Edelson weaves in some of the interesting history and folklore of this enchanted place that comes alive and adds to the mystery of the story. I loved the main character, Ruby, who is a strong-willed young woman with the normal coming of age conflicts but who has such a strong sense of self and who is determined not to let appearances or other people’s opinions direct her decisions. Not a traditional girl meets boy story. Lots of twists and unexpected turns with an ending that leaves you waiting/hoping for a sequel!

I received a copy of BETWEEN WILD & RUIN for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone. There was no compensation made for this review.

Talk about nostalgia! For some reason, this book brought TWILIGHT back to mind. I'm not entirely sure aside from the genre, but the feeling was strong with this one.

BETWEEN WILD & RUIN is filled with Native American folklore, magic, and brings out the hard questions about death and what makes a person beautiful. It is very much a Beauty and the Beast mashup with the paranormal romance. I may not have known where it was going at times, but the rich historical and folkloric setting really set the tone and helped the story move.

The writing was well done. Each of the main cast were well rounded. Their chemistry together was well done and played well with the setting. The story was a bit slow, but I like what Edelson decided to focus on. And really, I feel the character interaction and the rich background made up for the moments where I was hoping for more action.

I did find myself theorizing about what was happening. And though you do get some answers, there are plenty of questions for a future book.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I found myself smiling and loving the boys for different reasons. For the young adult paranormal romance reader, I suggest picking this up.

Final Rating: 3/5

I was intrigued when I first saw the description and had a feeling it would be a great story. It was so much better than great.

The mysteries drag you through each page, begging you to learn more, to understand the world that Ruby is suddenly thrust into. There's so much more going on beneath the surface, and there was one twist, in particular, that I totally didn't see coming.

The story itself is reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, while the atmosphere feels distinctly Twilight, but Between Wild and Ruin manages to transcend both tales for something uniquely compelling.

I absolutely loved this book, and am eagerly awaiting the next (fair warning, there is definitely a major cliffhanger at the end of this story, but so worth it). Excuse me while I quietly sob in the corner, waiting for more of Ruby's story.

This is an amazing book that is a terrific young adult contemporary/romance/paranormal story, but is so much more. I am well beyond my young adult years and could not put Between Wild and Ruin down. The story focuses on Ruby, a young woman who loses her mother and relocates with her aunt from bustling Los Angeles to small town New Mexico. There she makes friends, including a mysterious young man she’s attracted to against her better judgment, and learns that the legends of New Mexico are more real than she ever imagined. Edelson’s writing grabs you and won’t let you go. She moves the story along and at the same time weaves in the beauty, history and legends of New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment. In my experience it is rare that an author can do this. Edelson deftly tells Ruby’s story, leaving you wanting more. Edelson is a new author and I’m really glad I took a chance on her. Highly recommended.

This was a great character driven story! At first I thought it was going to be on the silly side but what I found was a thought out story with amazing characters. I loved Ruby and was able to really identify with her and her situation. This was an amazing story about romance, fantasy, and fairy tales. I think those who loved Twilight will really love this one! I know I did!! The paranormal aspects of this story were done so well that I really hope to get a print copy of this one soon!!!

Between Wild and Ruin by Jennifer G Edelson follows Ruby, a teen transplanted from LA to La Luna after her mother's death. She's torn between the adventure of it all, and being removed from known friends and places. Ruby lives with her Aunt Liddy in a beautiful home a ways out of town. This tiny town in New Mexico holds unfathomable secrets just waiting to be discovered.

Hiking up the mountain near her home, Ruby discovers an ancient ruin from the Pecos Indians. Legend says it is a gateway to Ottomundo, the otherworld. Up at the ruin, Ruby meets the mysterious Leo, an impossibly handsome and utterly arrogant man who apparently cannot leave the mountain. As Ruby and Liddy get settled in, they begin to make friends. Angel and Torrance, two of the officers in tiny La Luna, are among the first to make them feel welcome. And Ruby makes a point to befriend Ezra, a scarred curmudgeon so begrudgingly allows Ruby into his world.

Wupatki Pueblo Ruins.

This story started out seeming very young adult contemporary, a story about a girl moving to a small town, making friends and finding her new place in life. It gradually morphed into more of something urban fantasy. I felt the change was actually handled pretty well. I loved the history of the Pecos Indians, and influence of Native American lore. It was a welcome change from urban fantasy full of werewolves and vampires. Considering Dracula is my favourite classic horror novel, it says a lot that I've come to loathe vampires in literature. It's become trite, as have werewolves.

Wild & Ruin sadly doesn't pass the Bechdel-Wallace test. Ninety-five percent of the female to female conversations revolve around boys. Ugh on that count. I also guessed pretty early on all of what Ezra was, his connection to Leo, and the truth of the mountain lion that stalks Ruby's property. Part might be my interest and knowledge of myth and legend, so I won't say it's real easy to guess. This was a pretty easy read. It flowed well, and is a great addition to young adult urban fantasy.

A thoughtful YA novel that combines a coming of age story with romance and fairy tale elements and features well-researched, fascinating descriptions about New Mexico history, landscape, and cultures. The author’s writing style is lyrical and captivating and brings the reader in to this mysterious, mesmerizing world.
