Aveline Kushi's Complete Guide to Macrobiotic Cooking for Health, Harmony, and Peace

Rate this book

It's written with a lovely introduction to Japanese traditional way of eating and cooking by Aveline's childhood experiences in Japanese mountain village. Really enjoyed the book!

I found this book in the 1980s. It is extremely strict. However, it was a good source for looking up a lot of things for a long time. I find that I’m not really needing it or using it much anymore so letting it go.

My favourite and most important cookbook. I acquired this book a year after I moved out of my parents' home. This book saved me from more than just that one year of boring semi healthy home cooking. It has provided me not only with the building blocks of cooking well and a way for structuring meals, but also with practical solutions to figuring out how to start living macrobiotically. I love the illustrations and the poetry throughout the book which help to meditate positively upon the significance of macrobiotic attitudes to nutrition. Not so long ago, and many different cooking books later (which helped me to build upon cooking successes initiated by this book), I dipped back into the "Complete Guide" and was really surprised how much I had missed in my initial period of working with the book. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who loves cooking!

I love this book. Every vegetable, every food is described with detail and with love. Everything I need is here - from preparations, to cooking utensils, and macrobiotic principles. Kushi gives bits of history about her life - makes the book very personal and fun to read. However, many of the recipes are for family-sized portions. If you're cooking for one or two, you'll have to modify.
