Beautiful Beasts Academy #1

Manicures and Mayhem

Rate this book
Welcome to Beautiful Beasts Academy, where the only thing more dangerous than the haunted grounds are the students themselves.

Life as the daughter of the city’s most prominent Vampire was tough enough.
Bodyguards with fangs.
Paparazzi everywhere I turn.
Dates with an overbearing Demon.
I hated it all. So when the opportunity to attend Academy reared its head, I jumped at the chance.
I could hide there, blend in with all the other beautiful beasts and try to ignore my bodyguard.

I wanted normal
I craved boring.

But fate has a shitty sense of humor, way worse than mine.
So when I find a body in the middle of my bedroom on my first night there...I’m not threatened not with death...something worse.

Getting expelled.

And to prove my innocence I have to find the real killer in a school full of monsters.

Prepare yourself for side-splitting hillariousness and super hot Wolf shifters in this slow-burn romance.

The authors may be nice people, but resorting to buy fake reviews for their horrendously written book? Hilarious and pathetic. I've seen better writing from 6th graders and that's just judging on technical execution alone, so it was no surprise that all these five star ratings are from accounts that are copying and pasting the same reviews for dozens of books. For example:

https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/8...

Low effort, really, even when buying a dime a dozen reviews. Just change up a few words to copy the names of the protagonists from the book blurbs and post the same thing for dozens of books on the same day.

https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/9...

"Loads of twists throughout to keep you on your toes."
"The story was put together brilliantly with lots of twists."
"This book was full of action, twists and turns throughout. To make an amazing book. "
"Even though they are short they are full of action with lots of turns you might not see coming."
"All the twists and turns keep you on your toes with every page."

Sure, "Cheryl" is totally a real person reviewing 2-3 books a day with the exact same generic marketing catchprases.

It's just disgusting that the same fake review phenomenon on Amazon has now even migrated to GR and that writers are truly so desperate, they probably rationalize it to themselves as necessary "marketing." If only they had spent a fraction of the time buying fake reviews on actually improving their ridiculously horrible writing.

Edit: "angela gunstone" with 453 reviews

https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/6...

Spammed "Loved the characters and the storyline so couldn't put it down until the end so it's a well deserved five stars and I would recommend this book to everyone" in dozens and dozens of reviews. Every book got the exact same copy and pasted fake review, I have page after page of screenshots. Real great job guys, at least spend a little more to buy some better quality fake reviewers.

DNF - did not like the characters and felt the plot was subpar and made little sense.

The lead male interest also makes a totally unbelievable character shift overnight from the first time they meet to the second. Again, I DNF, so perhaps it's a setup, but either way, didn't work for me.

A blend of paranormal romance, action, mystery, and humor.
The story follows a “young” vampire as she navigates a dangerous academy filled with supernatural beings and political intrigue in a world of magic and danger. While the plot can be predictable at times, it’s light and entertaining, making it an enjoyable read.

4 stars.. ish.. maybe 4.25-4.5

Good idea but is in desperate need of a good editor! I couldn't even finish the book I only made it 1/3 of the way through before I had to give up.
First off, the grammar is awful. There are hundreds of run on sentences. The thought process is cluttered and clunky.
The author tries way too hard to be descriptive but doesn't actually describe anything. The descriptions don't even match throughout the book. The school looks old on the outside but brand new on the inside yet her dorms are filthy? And it's a school for super influential families but they have cheap uniforms and crappy dorms and food?
Then there's the main character, I made it 37% through and still have no idea what she looks like. Her character is all over the place. One minute she's over being famous but then she's a total snob when she gets there and gets offended people don't automatically know who she is. She's all excited to go to this school and as soon as she gets there, she's whinny and wants to go home. Then she acts like a bad ass one minute and then she's afraid of some shifters the next?
You have no idea why the other students hate her. Maybe it's because she is a vampire? But she's not the only vampire there? And the whole story is choppy.
There is no smooth transition from one scene to the next. One minute she was unpacking her stuff and then the next she was in the cafeteria and then she was in class, but you don't really know how she got from one to the other or even if they happened in different days.
Overall I was super disappointed with the book. I almost always at least finish the book but I just couldn't take it anymore and feel like I wasted 2 hours of my life.

DNF - quit at 15%
Just couldn't get into this story, the heroine is too much of an entitled princess type character for me to get behind & enjoy let alone want to read about. The name dropping of all her designer clothing/shoes/bags was just way out of my comfort zone. Her disdain at the shabby room at the academy was the breaking point for me. No way do I want to read about a character like that. The writing could use more from a content editor & proof-reading.

At my age, life is to short & my time to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Ok where to start, let me firstly say that only these wonderfully wacky ladies could create something this bonkers but brilliant. The book starts off a little slow but this is needed for world building and Characteur definition and once it gets going its a really good storey. Mor is a fantastic lead Heroine as she has an air of vunerability about her and isn't a kick ass heroine from page one. Ava - well what can I say other than I couldn't have guessed what shifter she was and that's where the bonkers comes in but its genius, it really is. There is humour, friendship and potential love interest that have me really looking forward to book two as the heat will definitely start to rise with Mor and her wolves but also hopefully with Ava and Chuck. There are so many Academy books coming out and a lot of them are really good but only a few fall into the brilliant, absolutely cant wait for the next instalment category and this is one of those books.

When Morwenna Livingstone’s father presents an opportunity for her to attend Bestias Academy, she jumps at the chance. This 99 year old vampire will finally get to experience a normal school life, or so she thinks.

But before Mor has even settled in, she’s quickly making enemies in a school full of supernaturals - vampires, demons, ghouls and shifters. On the plus side the dream friendship she’s been waiting for might just be waiting for her.

Manicures and Mayhem is a great new academy series, with a bit of a supernatural twist. It does take a fraction to get into the story, but once you do you’ll be hooked.

This story is co-written by Mila Young and Kim Faulks, aka Kila Foung (hehe), and I can’t wait to read the next books in the Beautiful Beasts Academy series.

So at this point I can't conclusively say I will read the entire series but I plan to give it my best shot. The heroine is a lot to take on as she's very immature and clearly spoiled. After being home-schooled for years her very powerful vamp father sends her to a supernatural academy. When she arrives she kinda expects people to know who she is and obsess over her. Most of her 100 years on earth were spent watching television and so she has a very abnormal view of what the reality is really like. In her case she's obsessed with the original 90210 and walks into school expecting popularity, immediate friends and a Luke Perry look-alike to be her man. Obviously this does not happen and she almost immediately makes enemies with the mean girls in the school who also happen to be her kinds arch nemesis' aka werewolves. She catches feelings out of nowhere for some guys and they keep turning up when she needs help. This book has set the scene so we'll see how it goes from here. At 100 years old I'd think she'd be a little more likable and wiser but so far I am not seeing that!!!

This book was ok. A little rushed in my opinion, but I liked it well enough to want to continue on in the series. I loved the secondary character of Ava (Mor's best friend) she was my favorite character in the whole novel.

The wolf shifters were also interesting and I would love to see more from them in the next book and get to know them a little better. There was not much romance in this story, but the little hints that there were felt a bit forced to me, so I will have to see how that aspect works out in the next novel. Jury is still out on that.

Bottom line: if you like reverse harem's that feature a magical academy with lots of mean girls and many different types of creatures, this series might be right up your alley.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Okay I am officially hooked on this new world and its fantastic characters!! We follow Morwenna an important Vamp that is forced to enroll in the Academy. She thinks this will be the perfect chance to get away and live for a moment but life has other plans once she arrives. Full of intrigue, snark, danger, mystery, and so much more that will keep you turning the page until you run out wishing you had more. A total must read for fans of paranormal reverse harem Academy books. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Ok, first the good stuff. Really enjoyed the story. I liked how Mor’s character developed. I liked the different creatures introduced to the story and at the academy. Loved the bestie and how the two girls grew to be the tightest bffs.

On the other hand, the love interests didn’t spark much love or heat. It was more protectiveness. Those relationships did not naturally develop. We know hardly nothing about Judas and his pack other than he loves a challenge and wants to protect Mor. There were layers of villains. The felines has some pretty bitchy moments, but we knew nothing about the real villain and then she just pops up at the end and gets dealt with very very quickly. It was a bit strange.

And then magically Mor is still returning to the academy. No reason given by the Ancient, just oooh I’m trying to be cryptic and mysterious type stuff. It just didn’t really work in the end.

I’ll give book 2 a go because you just don’t know in the end. Sometimes stories just blossom beautifully and you don’t want to miss it.

This wasn't a bad concept, but a not so awesome execution.
The authors need to work on the plot, on the editing, and don't get me started on the inconsistencies and continuity issues.
So all in all it has good ideas that need more backbone.
I hope the next books in the series are better and the authors realized where they went wrong.
I gave 3* because while it was all of those things, it did keep my interest and I would give book two a chance.

Mysterious, action filled fun!

What a fun book this was to read. It starts off with a bang and goes from there. I really liked the unpredictable story line that kept you guessing reading. Looking forward to whats in store for Morwenna and Ava and their potential men!

I'm slightly on the fence about this one. While I understand in the world-building a 99 years old vampire is still considered young, the fact the students act like teens, and immature ones at that, just didn't work for me. There's some really witty dialog, and very interesting characters, but this read like a mean girls/teen high school story--a genre I don't care for. Other readers of YA may find the book more appealing, which is why I rounded up my 3.5 to a 4-star rating.

Umm... huge problem. One that I couldn't for the life of me overlook.
Not really a spoiler I don't think.
SHE'S 100 YEARS OLD. Like yeah okay that's cool, but then she acts like she's 15... maybe 16. All her friends are normal high school ages (16 ish?) and they act more mature than she does. It's just a huge issue I have. And I'm up to book 3 (apparently I like torturing myself) and so far her age isn't impacting anything. I would kind of understand it if there was more to it, but I feel like because of her age she should be more developed as a character.
Like PUH LEASE, a 100 year old virgin... that has no friends.... and hasn't done anything with her life... never fed like a normal vampire... still calls her dad daddy... her father figure-like 150 plus year old guard connecting with her 16 year old friend.
Not. Right. None of it.
Plus the love interests are boring. Judas is cool but do Nero and Bond even have personalities? I feel like they've been added in just so it's a reverse harem. And before you think it, I'm half way through book 3 and I still feel like this.
Overall, this was a good book to force myself to read at night so I got tired faster. Total snooze fest.

I'm so enjoying this series!!! If I thought the prequel was awesome, book one in this series was amazing. Morwenna and her rich people problem, add the facts that she spoiled, she wasn't getting any sympathy points from me. But more and more thorough out the story she changed, she learned, and I loved her. Also can we talk about how awesome Ava is!!! She kind soul and definitely went the extra mile for her friend Mor. Throw in plenty of intrigue, suspense, and action and we had a hell of read so looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received the opinions I have expressed are my own.

Oh my gosh I loved this. I always get a littler nervous when I see cowrites because sometimes they just don’t work. That’s not the case with this writing duo. They wrote an amazing academy PNR. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Manicures and Mayhem by Mila Young and Kim Faulks is book one in their Beautiful Beasts Academy. Prepare to dive into a fun, fast-paced novel that will have you rolling your eyes, giggling, leaning forward in eager anticipation, and begging for more by the end.
Meet…Morwenna, the vampire daughter of a very powerful vampire who pulls no punches…only fangs. LOL! Her father is feared, important, and wants the best for her but she just wants a regular life. Apparently, she’s a bit obsessed with 90210 and finding her “Dylan.” So after an embarrassing scene, that she totally did at a party, she’s given the opportunity to go to Bestia’s Academy. Mor jumps at the opportunity thinking that this is her chance…too bad it won’t be what she’s expecting. But things only get intense and really crazy as danger makes itself known in the worst way possible…dead body in the new girl’s room.
I must admit that I enjoyed this book immensely. At first, I was on the fence concerning Morwenna. I was a bit humored by her antics at the party, but I was also mortified for her parents. It’d be one thing if she had said/done what she did to a low level vamp…but it was someone of rank! So I was expecting her to get into some serious trouble. Too bad that never happened. Yeah, I like a bit of punishment. LOL! I honestly got a bit smug though when she got to the Academy and saw that things weren’t going to be what she was accustomed to. She wanted freedom, independence, and space and the minute she gets it you see the “princess” attitude comes out. I liked her development though. The variety of characters the authors give us are great! I more than happily admit that I am LOVING Ava! She is AWESOME!
Now, while I rolled my eyes a few times at Morwenna and her attitude concerning certain things I have to say that there isn’t anything that I don’t like about this book! There are some predictable elements, but I loved the air of mystery, the danger, the romance, and the unpredictable moments that the authors give us.
This book is a must read! It’s a perfectly balanced coming of age novel with hints of a reverse harem romance. I can’t wait for more and I am literally begging the authors to give us more of that and of course, I am eagerly wanting more of Ava and Chuck. That is promising to be something hilarious, delicious, and intense and I am here for it! I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars!

Was very excited with the concept of this book, but I was let down by how underwhelmed I was. The plot could have been amazing, but it took a backseat to the teenage drama going on between the characters, which bothered me because the main character is supposed to be 99 years old.

I didn't like the heroine either because, she wants to be independent and says she's not like the snobby rich girls she's always surrounded with back at home, but then turns around and turns her nose at a bedroom (which she gets to herself) because it's dusty and has a small closet that won't hold all her designer shoes and clothes. And then when told she'd have to clean the room herself, the 99 year old vampire nearly had a heart attack because she's never had to clean before. Little things like this just made me upset, as well as the fact that she claims she can take care of herself, but is constantly have people save her because she cannot protect herself in the slightest.

And there was supposed to be a slow-burn romance between the main character and a certain pack of wolves, but I felt zero chemistry and the romance was very awkward to read about. I felt no attraction and didn't understand why the guys liked her, or her them, in a romantic way when I can only see them as close friends. Their friendship was actually something I liked about this book because, the lack of chemistry aside, I really liked this friendship and wanted to see where it was going.

This just wasn't the book for me. I wanted more from the plot and the characterization, but I was left very disappointed. If you like YA RH storylines, you might like this one. Don't let my review discourage you from trying this book out. You never know, what doesn't work for me might be your new favorite book!

"Did he realize...badge or no badge...we were the predators, and he was the prey?"

I wasn't so sure about this book when I started reading. Academy isn't usually my thing, because I usually think of children and strict tutors and HP universe altogether. And it bothered me (and still kind of does, if I'm being completely honest) that the characters are all around one hundred years old and still considered "teenagers." But I eventually understood that the different supernatural races all age at a very slow rate.

As I kept reading, I grew more curious and invested into the story. What was this young vampire girl's deal? Why was she kept protected for so long and why is she so different. (She's a terrible vampire, FYI.)

Then comes the other characters. Chuck, Ava, Judas, Bond, and Nero. These wonderful people tie everything together to make an epic story. Ava is the darling of the series. She's different, has a wicked sense of humor, and will drop everything to bury bodies for her bestie. Who wouldn't want a friend like that? And her little romance thing with Chuck is just everything wonderful. I love it and hope more comes from them.

I love that the wolves are the main romantic interests in this, because of the way vampires and werewolves are portrayed as enemies most of the time. Judas is a strong leader with too many secrets. Bond we don't know much about at this time, nor Nero really. Not until the next books.

In the end, there are some intriguing questions that still need answered and the journey to the finale of the book was enjoyable. I'm glad I pushed through my doubts and read Beautiful Beasts #1.

Of the books I've read from Mila Young, this has been my favourite so far.

I dont usually read academy books, as they often seem cheesy... and I also prefer for the characters to be at least 20 years old.... this book solved by age issue though. 99, turning 100. And the book was far from cheesy. I was laughing through most of it. Mor and Ava are great personalities.

The story follows Morwenna, a 99 years old vampire. She's the heir to her city's Cowen. She has grown up in a palace, with parties, manners, strict rules and with maids to do whatever she wants, and organic blood delivered in bags by donors.
She hates it. The pampering is fine. She deserves to be pampered. The maids are begging her to be the ones helping her.... no, the issue is the responsibilities. Having to go to boring parties, having to pretend to like her "boyfriend" the demon trying to gain her fathers favor.
So when her father gives her to opportunity to go to Bestias Avademy, she jump at the chance. They're surely gonna love her. It will be a walk in the park.

When she gets to the school, and is shows to her nasty room, filled with cobwebs, dust and METAL hangers, she starts having second thoughts... meeting Ava, her new BFF makes it manageable, but of course it cant be that easy.
She finsa dead body in her bed. The body of a mortal boy, which means that whoever murdered him broke just around 50 laws... and she is being framed...
