People generally regard Pope as the greatest of the 18th century and know his verse and his translation of Homer. After William Shakespeare and Alfred Tennyson, he ranks as third most frequently quoted in the language. Pope mastered the heroic couplet.
Pope is difficult, but really rewarding. I read this book in one of the harder classes I took in college and I was surprised to learn that I thought about this author long after the final exam.
A great collection of Pope's best works. Here are The Rape of the Lock, Essay on Criticism, The Dunciad, et al. You've got to like heroic couplets and sarcasm to enjoy Pope; I'm fine with the former and love the latter. Essay on Criticism, which is a poem, is magnificent: witty, profound, and on point throughout. Some of his other poems bring the overall book to three stars.
A worthy read, especially for 18th century fans and lit nerds.
