1305 A.D.

Being descended from great, though disgraced family, can be a greater curse than most. As a direct descendant of Simon de Montfort, Lady Gray de Montfort Serroux has lived her life with the axe of shame hanging over her head. Because of this, her marriage matches were limited and she wed a dishonorable man who widowed her when he was murdered in a gambling game.

Left with a young daughter to support, Gray and her daughter and her mother have been living in poverty. But now her daughter is approaching marriageable age and Gray’s conniving, haughty mother plots to marry the girl to the first wealthy man who offers for her hand. Meanwhile, an army of mercenaries seeks shelter at Gray’s crumbling castle. Their leader, Sir Braxton de Nerra, is a knight bannerette.

Not sworn to a single liege, he travels with his mercenaries and has accumulated a good deal of wealth fighting other people's battles. Taken with the beautiful Lady Gray even as the lady’s mother tries to force the granddaughter upon him, Braxton finds himself drawn into the desperate life they lead at the Castle Erith. As Braxton and Gray fall in love, Gray's mother, the evil Constance, continues to wreak havoc, now aimed at the man who so desperately loves her daughter.

Join Braxton as he fights for his new home, his new family, and is finally forced into the ultimate act of self-sacrifice to save those he loves.

Liked this one despite the initial and quite lengthy tentativeness of the plot, leaving me wondering if it was going anywhere or had anywhere to go. True the cruel, old hag was introduced early but can you hang a story on her? It seems you can.

She, this wicked self-deceiving harridan, is the prime mover here, the initial cause of [nearly] all the action. Which meant that the 'main' characters were almost purely reactive. Which further meant the story was not entirely predictable. Which, to carry this along, meant the story was more enjoyable than it might have been. Who doesn't like a bit of a surprise now and then?

Not quite sure about this one

Almost done with all KLVs medieval romances but this one will be one of the few of hers that I dont quite like. One reason is that it feels disjointed and all over the place. I was not interested at all with the inclusion of Gray's daughter's love story and it took away from thr main plot. I also wish brooke's character development focused on her transformation from being a selfish brat to someone who wouldn't turn out to be like her grandma. Why on earth the book included gray's 15yr old "romance" was unpalatable to me esp since she isnt even someone a reader will like or adore later on. What a waste of pages which could have been focused on the main H and h.

5***** Another great historical romance from Kathryn le Veque. What a lot of damage one interfering old lady can cause. The lady Constance is determined to regain her former status by selling her grand daughter to the highest bidder. The problem is the girl is already contracted The hero (or one of them because there are several in this story) is a mercenary knight who is hired to take the girl. The heroine is the girls mother who is trying to keep food in the bellies of her people. There are lots of battles and lots of love in this book. Several secondary characters to fall in love with too. A must read for anyone who likes historical romance.

Great love story...about honor and sacrifice.

The hero Braxton in this love story, is a dream of a man. He isn't your typical young knight. He has lived quite a full life as a mercanary. That all changes when he meets the heroine Gray. Gray is very strong but weary after living such a sad life. It takes her a while to trust Braxton, but Braxton is the definition of honor... and his sacrifice at the end is breathtaking. The secondary characters are great as well there is even a secondary romance that comes into play.

If you love deep, emotional moving stories...check out this author..you won't be sorry.

The story starts with a scare. Lady Gray and Brooke are picking berries and Gray hears Brooke scream. She’s not sure where the scream is coming from but she takes off running. When she finds her she I’d dangling over the cliff and about to fall 40 feet down the Falls of Erith. She tries to get Brooke to grab her clothing that she’s hung over but Brooke is too terrified and all at once the ground starts to give away and Gray is about to fall over too. Suddenly someone grabs her ankle to secure her and pull her back (that would be her hero Sir Braxton). Gray pleads with Braxton to save her daughter, this is where his second in command Sir Dallas comes into play. Braxton holds his ankles and he goes over the cliff to retrieve our damsel in distress (with a little help from Gray’s hose).
Of course what story wouldn’t be complete without an evil villain? That would be Gray’s mother Constance. And evil she is!
To find out more, you will need to read the book. Believe me, it is definitely worth your time!
This is such an engaging read. Kathryn Le Veque is so uniquely talented with the way she spins a story.
To date, this has got to be my favorite Kathryn Le Veque book!

Medieval Romance is one of my favorites and if you have never read Kathryn Le Veque and love historical romance you should. I love reading about the knights and battles. Life was tough, but Kathryn makes all her stories worth reading. The Falls of Erith is the second story for the de Nerra family and the first story for the de Russe family. I love how characters intertwine in the stories. Lady Gray is from the lineage of kings, but unfortunately a family fallen from grace. She had a miserable first marriage and is now widowed with a daughter, she also has an evil mother who wants to get back to that former glory at any cost.
Dustin de Nerra is a mercenary knight who by happenstance meets Lady Gray and immediately wants to know the woman better. Dustin soon cares for Lady Gray very deeply and will take care of her and her daughter at any cost.
This is an exciting story of love can conquer all.

always delivers

Kathryn Le Veque is one of my ‘go to’ authors for medieval romance. She does not fear weaving some of the harsh and unsavoury aspects of life, both social and political, within the great tapestries of her romances. She very cleverly uses the great names and political alliances to create her own ‘world’ within the history of the time, and so gives us some real heady romances! .
This is no different. There are two love stories in this. A mature coming together of an older knight & widowed mother, and a younger knight & the teenage daughter.
And watch out for wickedness! There is more than one villain!
Great reading.

Good read!

Another good book by le Vecque. This was the story of the Lady Gray and Braxton de Nerra, as well as that of Lady Gray's daughter, the Lady Brooke and her husband, Sir Dallas Aston. It was a good story all the way through to almost the end, where it seemed a little hurried to the finish. I can't imagine what other conclusion would have worked for the book, but it seemed to be a little "clipped" at the end, almost like something essential was missing to wrap things up nice & tidy. But, as all good Le Veque novels go, it was a great adventure!

Very good written book

I write very few reviews but I had to on this book. I'm not that interested in love stories and read Kathryn le Veque because her books are exciting. This one was more of a love story but it was so good. The way she writes the castle the people all comes to life. I have read many of her books and I can say this is my favorite. I've already notice she has new one coming out. I've preordered it so I will get right away.

What a great story. I've been reading a lot of Kathryn Le Veque books lately and I've loved every one of them. This romantic story of a destitute lady and her teenage daughter being saved by Braxton De Nerra and his mercenary knights was just wonderful. Full of romance with many twists and turns and an evil mother, this story was hard to put down.

A love worth sacrifice

I have yet to pick up a novel of Ms. Le Veque's and been able to set it down until I have completed the entire book because the action, romance and pageantry is so encompassing! Ms. Le Veque writes with an unparalleled talent that is literally indescribable with its beauty...please never stop!

This was a very nice read. Braxton and Gray's story was sweet and during the book it was made obvious that the de Nerra war machine was as strong as ever. The ending left me flat, hence 3 stars.

The Falls of Erith turned out to be one of the better books I've read by LeVeque. Medieval stories are some of my favorites and she didn't disappoint in her descriptors, character development or historical accuracy. I especially enjoy her descriptions of the knights in their armor, their chargers, their armies.

Gray's life was abyssmal. She was trapped with the nasty mother, annoying daughter, abject poverty, yet she kept working and showing what a selfless person she was. She never would have guessed the answer to a new life would be in the form of a knight in shining armor - literally.

I enjoyed the interesting twist of the nasty mother and her undoing. The daughter was annoying and I couldn't like her until after she was married and matured.

My favorite thing about the book that made it so unlike others in this genre was the fact Braxton and Gray actually talked to one another and didn't allow communication or lack of, to be an issue. So many other stories I've read, thinking if only they would talk to one another and not assume... But, then there might not be a story.

I simply cannot get enough of Kathryn Le Veques medieval romance books. I have very nearly read every single one out and I'm wondering when I finally finish the last of them if I'm going to be overly crushed and feeling such loss from finishing them all. I have honestly not read a book from any other author in quite some time and I read at least 1 of her books per week. They are just That Good! :)
