Celestine Chronicles #3

Power of the Lost

Rate this book
A man is only as good as his word ...

Celestine is a vast world, filled with mysteries and peopled by creatures most men consider nothing but flights of fancy.

Terrence Mack knows better.

Free of Florence at last, he wants nothing more than to make good on a promise. Yuri Kolenko journeyed across the world on a quest to be made chieftain and end the abuses of an evil shaman. Terry has sworn to see it done.

Yet pursued by furies, a dragon, even the Dust Lord himself, the template and his companions are compelled to challenge the Sphinx and enter the Labyrinth. There they must make their way to the center, challenge an ancient, fallen hero, and bargain with a woman twice-scorned, called with good reason the Power of the Lost ...

Now it all makes sense. This explains almost everything

The monsters that Terry meets keep getting weirder. Terry is changing, trying to adapt to this world, but at the same time is resilient in his ideals of how he should act, despite what everyone else is telling him. He cares for the people he is with. This is turning into a very good series and I am very excited to see where it goes.

Recommended by a friend, I started the first Celestine Chronicles book with some concerns. Indie authors are a mixed bag. The first book of the series was decent, the second was better and this book Power of the Lost (Celestine Chronicles #3) is the best of them so far. I worry with indie authors and their series as sometimes by about the third book or so they are out of ideas and the later books suck.

The author has truly improved their writing skill. I won’t be a grammar Nazi, but either got a much better editor or got enough ARC readers to find most of the mistakes before releasing on Kindle.

There are some great plot twists that kept me guessing which way the story was going to go. I was left guessing right to the end of the book, and was wrong most of the way. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Growth and resolve

First and foremost I need to warn readers that these books have a habit of putting me into reading slumps because they are so good that anything I read after just doesn’t compare!
Now for the review, the third installment in this incredible series gives us some true character development. We finally see our hero embracing his new life and overcoming his fears and doubts that have hindered him from the beginning! Of course this book has a fair amount of naughty bits but the author has a masterful way of making it a part of the story and not just for the instant gratification!

Break the pattern, expanding thoughts in edit

Okay, I originally gave this one a one star lower rating than the first two books, in other words three stars, but after thinking about it I’m lowering my rating to two stars.

My reason for this is that the books has so many intentional errors in the development of the plot as well as offensive double standards that are just not believable. This discussion requires the use of spoilers so if you keep reading my review then consider yourself warned.

Some important scenes that just don’t make sense are Terry’s continuing hatred towards the red dragon proxy, Ash. One scene he’s sympathetic to her. The next he’s ready to murder her. He comes off as bipolar at best, psychopathic at worse, which by the way is what everyone accuses her of being. Making these character interactions even more frustrating is that in one scene Ash seems to be reforming her personality and developing humility and respect for the “lesser” forms of life, only to reverse completely and be very cruel and self centered and egotistical in another scene that she is “inserted” into. I say inserted because unless Ash is talking or needed for a spell, she is invisible within the group as if the author forgot to mention her. This back and forth, teeter totter between extreme interactions and feelings between Terry and Ash is frustrating and not believable for me.

Further, important lessons and potential actions by characters are conveniently over looked when the plot needs those lessons and characters to be forgotten. The best example of this is Terry’s dealing with the Sphinx. He has a dragon with incredible amounts of information, two Minotaurs that have an affinity for riddles and puzzle solving (according to the authors own narration) and a blood devil who is all about contracts standing right next to him when the Sphinx tricks him with her word play and NONE of these characters say one word to alert Terry to the danger or to apply the lessons he has learned from them in the previous two books ... why? Because the author needs Terry to mess up AGAIN!!!

We are told that Terry has no formal education. But when the author needs him to provide the most obscure Greek mythological reference then Terry is your man.

We are introduced to a Greek goddess, not the first mind you or the ugliest, but who the author describes as fat and compares to the Michelin tire mascot and has thick eyebrows. Which by the way is not how she is described in the labyrinth stories/myths. But for this reason, Terry is disgusted and states he wouldn’t have sex with her because people who fail to take care of their bodies don’t deserve love and sex. This from a character who has sex with an octopus lady, a female Minotaur he has to milk twice a day, a Fox Lady, a Tiger Lady, a dryad, one spider lady but he did offer to “bond” with another (the mother of all spiders), a Gorgon, is probably gonna end up with the red dragon lady, and has sex with a cyclops and is being set up for a nightmare creature that looks like a centaur. Yeah. He has standards alright. So freaking unbelievable!

Another big plot point that bothers me is that the world of Celestine turns out to be Tartarus - as in the hell portion of the underworld/prison that the Greek gods cast the titans into. If that’s so, why is terry sent here??? He died as a Christian but got sent to Greek hell?

Speaking of the Christian part. The Dust Lord, Thomas, who is the main villain and the first template sent into this world turns out to speak Aramaic. So that, coupled with other clues - I’m predicting he turns out to be the Thomas from the Bible, the one who doubted Jesus return and had to see and touch his wounds. That’s my prediction but I’m not sure I’m going to read the next book when it comes out. Just so many problems with this progression.

Why is the author focusing on Athena myths? Every time we meet someone new it seems she is a victim of Athena’s judgement and curses? Are we being set up to kill a goddess at some point down the road? Because there are tons of Greek myths out there.

Back to my original thoughts - this is the third book and Terry is still making the same mistakes!!! He is not growing and that’s not only boring but frustrating. In the last book he learned that the devil is in the details. That’s not all he learned but it was one key lesson due to his relationship with Prada. But in this book he what? Forgot? Reset? He makes stupid mistake after stupid mistake again with his actions and words showing that he hasn’t learned or that the writer is unwilling to let him grow. Either way it made many key moments in this book painful to read because I could see the reversal coming a mile away. Why? Because I’ve seen this before in the first two books. If you’re not going to let the characters grow then the story becomes boring.

Good, but one main problem.

I have mixed feelings about this book, I enjoyed the first one a lot and the series continues to hold my attention and I want to like it. However, Laina just annoys me so much and she dominates the harem as priority despite being the least interesting member. Super frustrating having so many potentially interesting and complex characters ignored for her.

Sigh...that was good

This series was a surprise to me. Randomly picked one night, it was a great choice. Since then, each book has become even better. Terry continues in his adventures in defeating evil hordes and capture. Some of these really have the reader gasping with horror and disbelief whilst on the edge of the seat. Cannot wait until the next one...

MC has a massive hero complex. Is extremely soft and talks about his feeling far to much. at some points in the book i literally had to skip past parts because they made me cringe. I'm done with this series .

Amazing just amazing.
I am wordless how awesome the story is. Seriously, the author did a great job in continuing the powerful story. Really liked some of the moral decisions the MC made. Very mature writing. Eagerly looking forward to the next book!

Great book

Longer than I was expecting with the speed he is producing these books and absolutely wonderful. The story is progressing strong and just as catching and entertaining! The harem element doesn't feel pushed or just added in for the trope and works well for the story.

Powerful Fantasy

As others have pointed out, the plot has truly outgrown the erotica. This series keeps getting better and better.

I think it's almost a shame that there are many people who wouldn't give this book a go because of the harem nature. But at the same time, I'm glad that I decided to give it a go. Onto the next!

Book 3 just keeps it going

Plenty of feels, fights, and ducks given in this new installment of Celestine Chronicles. Worth your read if you have not yet picked up the series. Terry is a well crafted MC who I actually care about. I’m not-so-patiently waiting for the next book.

Trapt in another world + Harem + Monsters: Enter the Big Bad.

Terry and his harem continue on their journey, but as ever the allure of a Template is to ignore and Terry is chased wherever he goes.

This third novel continues where the second left off and does a fine job doing so. A few more members are added to the party and their character interaction keep things interesting. The Greek theme continues to be a good addition and keeps adding a cool spin on an admittedly somewhat cliché plot by now.

Well written 3.5 stars.

Another good book.

The story continues to grow and develop into a unique tale. The author kept me engaged with the story and the advancement of the plot and the characters was good. The author has done good in showing the MC having trouble and doubts about what is going on but not making the MC seem weak. The use of old fables from many years ago is entertaining and fun to read. Overall I enjoyed it.

This series is one of the most consistent ones I've read in a while.

The characters are interesting, start to finish, while growing and changing in slow, realistic ways. Every character manages to get some time in the spotlight despite the fact that new characters are added with each book. I personally look forward to the growth of our resident angry female character which I'm happy to see, didn't magically change for plot reasons (though the comparison to Vegeta did make me laugh).

The conflict, which was revealed quite early on in the series, doesn't grow and get out of control like in other similar stories, but instead becomes further defined with each new instalment. We know that our main character is supposedly in over his head, despite triumphing over everything he encounters, but with this novel especially, he is shown what he truly has to face. The trouble is explained without growing to a scale that wouldn't fit in your average book and I must really commend the author for this.

I quite enjoyed how this book focused on the exchange that the main characters bonds give each person. We're always focusing on what they get from him by giving vague details in most cases, while this book defines things a bit more clearly. I also enjoyed how the author has begun to slow down the building of new relationships with the main character by having them fight against it, or work towards a bond. This will no doubt make the eventual bonds in future books feel more worth the effort and will also prevent the addition of a new girl every chapter, which similar books tend to fall into..

If I had to name something to complain about then I did have two minor gripes about this novel. The first being that most of the novel took place in a single setting which I wasn't that much of a fan of. The lore was interesting, though the reasoning for it felt weak, but I would have much preferred this section to be a bit shorter allowing the cast to explore just one more area either before or after it. The second complaint would be that the model on the cover, while interesting, was such a minor character that I would have preferred it be of one of the other main characters. This could be a conscious choice to allow us to keep imagining characters as we would, but with most already being shown on previous covers, I think that might be a bit of a reach.

In the end, this book was a fun romp which still hasn't managed to collapse under the weight of it's growing plot. I would recommend it to any fans of adult fantasy literature.

Another Enjoyable Entry

I've taken breaks in between each of the books just to have a "fresh" take on the next entry. Because of this, I think I like the books even more than had I binged them and read them all back to back.

I enjoy the writing style, the flow, as well as the amount of content in the story. Reading other books makes me appreciate it even more. This may be a personal opinion (that is what reviews are, after all), but I enjoy the amount of action compared to story compared to sexy time. Other books have too much or awkwardly placed intimate scenes, but I feel like these books address it very well. The author knows they don't need to write out *every* scene. The initial scene and occasional other scenes with hints that it's happening at other times. I dig it.

As for the story itself, there was some weird choices from the MC, but nothing so bad that I had to stop reading. I may not have agreed, I may have been off put, but those times were usually short lived. There was one section towards the end of this entry that I wasn't a fan of, but I still like the book and story in general.

The pacing felt great to me in that it wasn't all action, nor all story, but a great mix of the two. A few times I felt like things were dragging, then they changed. For me, it all worked out very well.

Finally, the editing is on point. I find very few errors in the books, either grammatical or syntax. This makes the books very easy to read and follow. When I'm super deep in the story and there's either a grammar error or some other literary error, it really breaks my immersion; almost like a sudden car accident that I can walk away from.

I plan on continuing this series and look forward to where it all ends up.

Fantastic read as so far

So great that the writer keeps his style along the series. How Terry treats all the women he loves and encounters. With fairness and respect on his terms.(Except what happend to Shu. That might be an accident though. I want more explanation and understanding what and how the hell happened. I guess when Terry and Milla hook up there'll be some more info.)
Again exciting adventure. This time though a bit grim background story was there but justice has been fulfilled.
Somewhat bad that Euryle had to be left out of most of the main event. It happens to character with OP. I hope she will come back soundly.

I wonder how Tee will manage his harem that it gets bigger and bigger. I thought given his management style he wouldn't expand his harem more than he had at the start of the book 3(includimg Mila and Austar) at least for a time. I mean I didn't expect a recruit of oni so I'm wondering how he will his relationship romantic for his each lover.

Now i've read more than half of the series I feel afraid to finish the last book and wait another one in desperation.
Too bad that good books don't produce fast.

Love it. World got a lot bigger. The story was excellent, plot twists were unexpected and satisfying, and I still enjoyed those I caught early on. I appreciate Terry's somewhat realistic perspective on the world and what exactly is doing to his mental state instead of dipping all in the meat-pies without abandon. The "battle between good and evil" became grayer with the new perspectives.

The book thankfully doesn't end with that much of a cliffhanger like the previous two, which I also appreciate.

My only issues were the writing style being a bit repetitive, though now it's less of an issue than earlier books. Final rating would be 4.75/5, rounded up to 5/5 because I love this series. Am looking forward to the next one.

As always this series keeps on improving, and the novel aproach to the 'transmigated to a new world' new subgere of fantasy its been greatly developed. Terry is growing stronger and more used to his habilitys with every book, but not becomeing the typical lazy OP charatcer, he still has to work on his mental issues while preserving to keep his moral in a wolrd that would be more easely to handle if he didn't hold them. The interaction of the harem is gold in this series, where the females of the groups are indeed devoted to him and love him like no other, but they have a completely approach to life that him, and as such it cause frictions between the group. Laina as always keeps the position of 'Best wifey' I mean she is the moral compass of the group and the one staring the wheel in the rigth direction.

So with the 3rd volume, this series continues to steadily improve overall. Conflicts and antagonists become more clear. Stakes are better defined and action intensifies. World-building continues to incorporate more Greek mythology, which I personally like. I’ve loved the Greek myths since elementary school.

Honestly, the weakest part of this story remains Terrence. He continuously whines and has some messed up views of female physical appearance. He seems accepting of all monster girls at this point but when presented with an overweight and unattractive human regards her as the real monster. He also makes a crazy correlation between physical fitness and one’s ability to respect their partner. I assume this is the author sharing his real feelings.

Besides these occasional nugget drops from the MC, I’m enjoying the series.

Another one day read.

Book 3 of this series so far has been my favorite. Never a dull moment from start to finish. Great length to the book as it almost seemed longer than the other two but I read this much faster.

Now the story...I have to admit I was surprised to see the growth in importance of Prada in this book. Especially towards the end she played a very significant role in almost all of the characters at some point.

Nice addition of Halla and looking forward to future new additions to the story as well. Also the total change in character of Astrual was incredible. Almost seemed human like towards the end. Ultimately I am once again sad that I am finished and hopefully the wait for the next book isn’t too long.

Honestly the best book I've read in the series so far. Even if this wasn't a review on a smut book, I'd have rated it 5 stars because it's just a good BOOK in general. It plays on character dynamics perfectly, it resolves any issues I've had with the series, it cements the fantasy of the realm AND gives us enough details to finally begin to work towards putting it all together, while also having a BUNCH of dedicated smut scenes and character arcs, all of which are well written! It's a noticeable step up from what came before it, which wasn't bad, but didn't have as much of a grasp on the audience yet, and had some kinks to work out.

Absolute banger, 10/10, looking forward to the next one. I have no super detailed response to this, either. It's simply just a good ass book.

Even better!!

This keeps getting better as the plot continues to thicken. I like the balance of story progression and character development. Even in this book we are still learning about T-Mack and the bonds. Cebelius manages to some how have detailed sex scenes and yet they don't feel sleazy and they deepen the connection. The action is intense at times and clever and quick at others. I enjoy the twists and turns too. And I especially appreciate the fact that Terry is still relatable in many aspects even though he continues to grow and change.

I'm really enjoying this series. Interesting take on the Greek myths, a strong but not completely OP MC and strong and interesting female characters. Some people will get into technical stuff about books, but I like them or I don't. This one I like a lot because it's a good story that seems to be on a reasonable arc (i.e. there won't be 15 of them). The latter is something a lot of authors in this genre (whatever it is; harem fantasy maybe?) have trouble with and drag series out too much. So far Cebelius is on track, and I look forward to more (but not too much ;)

Absolutely fantastic

This is a bizarre world of furries, sex and violence.
Do not let that discourage you. If you're looking at this for the first time, start with book 1.

The world/story is fantastic, compelling and pulls from a lot of Earth mythology from all over the world.
Characters are put together like actual humans, and have unique motivations and growth throughout the series.
The story is fast paced and exciting, and keeps you hooked from the first page.

Can't recommend this enough!

fun book. good character progression and interaction. it is a harem story so the interactions can be rather explicit. I have enjoyed the characters growing and changing. some of it is pretty obviously for shadowed, but wow when the author throws out something new it is new. In this book, we have events from the previous books that I had written off as finished coming back in rather great and bizzare ways. all in all well worth the time to read. I liked the first as something unique that I had not seen before, now this story has become a must read for me.
try it. its worth the time.

a four star book that kicks it up to five at the end

The Celestine Chronicles are back on track after stumbling in book 2
Terrence Mack is getting his head together and keeping his moral compass in the 3rd book. Lots of action and adventure and the depth of heart that won me over in book 1.

If you loved book 1 but felt a little shaken in 2, don't know whether to keep going... DO. This book is worth it and I can't wait for the next installment. Keep it going Cebelius, more like this please.

Story Well Told

Book three maintained the excellent writing established in the first two books. The author provides detail and depth in several characters, not just the main character, which is excellent for the reader.
Lots of action while things get more and more complicated. The good news is that a couple of the major plots have not been completed, so there should be a follow up book.
