4.5* Princess in Practice was a delight. It perfectly balanced drama, adventure, friendship, secrets and self discovery. The characters are wonderful and instantly likeable. The plot has had me totally hooked from the first page of book one and the comfortable, whimsically descriptive writing style makes losing yourself in this story impossible not to do. What’s not to love about a story surrounding princesses, lies, sweets and what I get the feeling is the beginning of an f/f first love? This series makes me incredibly nostalgic for the books I loved as a kid, so It’s safe to assume I’m already eagerly awaiting the next instalment in this series.

Rosewood Chronicles

#1 Undercover Princess - ★★★★★
#2 Princess in Practice - ★★★★
#3 The Lost Princess - TBR

From Connie Glynn comes the second book of the Rosewood Chronicles - Princess in Practice, and it is the adventure of a lifetime that we all have been waiting for. If you thought Undercover Princess was amazing - you will definitely love its sequel.

''Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.''

The story continues where it left off, with Ellie, Lottie and Jamie settling after the adventurous ending and getting ready for their second year in Rosewood. With the new school year starting, their enemies are on the rise again, plotting their new actions, and Lottie and Jamie are more than ready to protect their princess.

But as always, things are not as easy as they seem, and they never suspect that danger will be so close to them, now more than ever.

I loved that Lottie has her moment with her old best friend, when she visits the hometown, and tells him all about the princess world. It was soothing to know that she still cares about him, and always will, despite their lives being very different now.

Throughout the book, we don't see any romantic scenes, but we do have a lot of subtle talks about them. I really loved the romance between Anastacia and Saskia. Maybe not the romance itself actually, because to be honest, as much as I love the author, she doesn't have a skill set for writing romance. What I did love, was the dedication of the couple to stay together and what Saskia would do and sacrifice, just for the person she loves.

I was very upset with the author trying so hard to make Lottie and Ellie a couple. Yes, we know lesbian relationships are against the rules in the kingdom and Ellie's father would be furious to find out. But Lottie had such a nice slow-burn romance going with Jamie, getting to know him and all. They even reminded me of Dimitri and Rose from Vampire Academy. They have a thing, and the author ruined it with trying to convince me Lottie likes girls. Well, I am not convinced. I already have my favourite girl couple, and it's not Lottie and Ellie.

Princess in Practice was a better-written book than Undercover Princess in my opinion.

If I had to choose though, I would still prefer the first book, because of the whole set up. The friendship stories were better and even the villains were better in the previous book.

The villains we had in this book were plain, without a character, and I simply did not care about any of them. Even that last chapter, with the mysterious leader that stands behind everything, all I could feel was - MEH!

When it comes to the friendship, and the wider team that helps these three main characters, we didn't really get to know them much more than we did from the previous book. My favourite was and will stay Raphael, who always makes me laugh.

''What? Why don't I get to be a plus-one?'' Raphael maned, tutting.

''Because, Raphael,'' Anastacia mocked, ''you're not a trained bodyguards, nor are you a princess.''

To conclude, I loved reading Princess in Practice. It had a nice overall story and it was very easy to read. I will definitely be waiting for the third book to come out and will be desperate to read it! A great book during the summer period for sure. If you love princesses - that is :)

I originally gave this 4 stars but i’m rounding it up because of the fluid of sexuality shown in the character Lottie.
In the first book, she was attracted to a male character and, in this was, she was attracted to a female character. Lottie didn’t obsess over this change but just let this happen. As a bi girl, i think this is a really real character trait. The execution of this is something i would love to see more in books and other media.

Though a general improvement from the first novel, PRINCESS IN PRACTICE flounders with a weak voice and one-dimensional characters.

Me finishing this book:

Sigh. PRINCESS IN PRACTICE ought to be called Novel in Theory.

Once again, before I start, I want to note that just like UNDERCOVER PRINCESS, Glynn has so much potential as a storyteller. You can tell she really loves and cares for her characters and world. Unfortunately, she just isn't skilled enough to pull off her ambitious story yet. Like all YouTubers (and even BookTubers) who have books, it's because of their audience that they get the deal, and not due to any level of ability.

Some of the faults cross over from the first book, so I won't go into them in great detail, but the voice is still flimsy. There is a boatload of filtering, a type of writing that distances the reader from the POV.

For example:
[Lottie] could see [Jamie's] tan hands come to rest on the table[…]

The first part is filtering; this is 3POV, so obviously whatever Lottie sees, we see too. There's no point noting that Lottie "could see" Jamie's hands. Of course she can. If she's narrating it, she must be able to see them. Compare to just "Jamie's tan hands came to rest on the table" or even "Jamie's tan hands rested on the table", which is sharper, flows better and removes the filtering. Now we are in Lottie's head proper.

This sort of filtering is all over. I don't need constant reminders that Lottie is the narrator. I shouldn't read it like I'm looking through glass at Lottie's adventures. I should read it like I am Lottie, experiencing everything as it plays out.

I can forgive filtering, but what really grinds my gears is the total lack of subtlety. There is no trust for the reader to catch cues or read between the lines.

Here's Binah explaining the underground tunnels in Rosewood:
"There are underground tunnels and rooms all over the school grounds; I've barely explored half of them but I know there must be more." Binah was almost giddy as she spoke, excited to have others to share her discovery with.

I am smart enough to infer her excitement at sharing from the fact that she was "almost giddy", thank you.

Here's another, when Ellie is fencing:
Ellie lunged forward, taking the offensive instinctively.

I can very easily see Ellie went offensive by the fact that she lunged forwards!

There's a lot of over-explaining too:
"Imagine if it was Lottie."
A bolt of lightning ran up Ellie's spine at the name of her best friend and she reached up to remove her own helmet.

No kidding did you react to Lottie's name, Ellie!

Please, trust your teen readers. They're smart.

Otherwise, style-wise, it just reads in the same juvenile voice. Much improved from UNDERCOVER PRINCESS, sure, but the bar was pretty low.

Characters still lack dimension. I don't know if I can properly articulate how the characters don't feel real, but they don't. Every single one of the supporting characters seems so blatantly created for a specific purpose, with no development, arcs, or unique enough traits to distinguish them. Most characters are plot devices. Poor Lola and Micky are still interchangeable (despite attempts to separate the two this time around). New character Percy is obviously the only candidate who could fill the gap in the barebones mystery.

Just saying, if you only introduce one new character at the beginning of the book, it is obvious they are going to be important somehow.

One thing that is done right is the diverse range of characters. Most of the cast are gay or bi. Binah is aromantic. Percy is deaf and uses sign language. If we could stop using food words to describe skin colour though, that would be great.

The characters introduced later are spewing their villainy so hard that it's comical. None of them are believable antagonists. Even the mysterious leader of Leviathan was bathed in dark, eeeeeeeeevil green light that it just made me wince, rather than fear him.

As for the plot, well... eh. There were too many convenient moments for my liking.

Oh no! The music box smashed because of Lottie's clumsiness never seen before— oh, never mind, the MacGuffin we needed was inside. Yay!

Yeah, you're not slick.

They often just happen to run into the things they need. Sometimes conveniently-omniscient Binah drops annoying puzzles for them to solve because she somehow knows everything (read: she knows things important to the plot at the time and so it makes it feel like the main characters are actually discovering things instead of being handed the information).

There's some important, clutching-the-story-by-the-throat messages written in German, and yet Lottie doesn't think to ask until much later what the translation is. If you don't immediately provide a translation (of real, translatable languages, that is), you're just withholding the mystery whenever it's convenient for the plot, when your reader can just go to Google Translate and find out immediately.

The romance was cringe. Like in UNDERCOVER PRINCESS, I suspect Glynn is going for a slow-burn friendship-to-romance but isn't dangling the carrots at the right time. Heck, the carrots are all there, for the amount of times Lottie moons over Ellie and vice versa, but neither character is biting. That thing happened in the powder room and then Ellie embodies a Manic Pixie Dream Girl and brushes it off.

OVERALL? Quality-wise, much improved over UNDERCOVER PRINCESS, and I read this quickly, but once again the idea runs away from the execution. I still enjoyed this despite the, ahem, 1k review I have dumped here. I can't wait to see Glynn's improvements as a writer displayed as each book of the series progresses.

(Just... faster, please.)

eARC received from Penguin Random House in an exchange for an honest review. This title released on the 13th June 2019.

EDIT 28th November 2020: Another quick reread. With what I know now I can see that Glynn is deliberately going for a love chevron with Lottie between Ellie and Jamie, but it seems really obvious that either Lollie will prevail or, and this is a big OR, Lottie will end up with BOTH Ellie and Jamie. Guess we'll have to see. Four stars for enjoyment, three stars for technique.

Okay the main thing i didn't like about this book waas ellie. She treated Lottie like a little kid and them kissing just.. urgh. A thing I really hate is people kissing people before they're sure. you don't need to, all that's gonna happen is that they'll be upset.
But aside from that, I loved this book. Lottie continues to be a great protagonist and we got to learn more about the side character, like Lola, Mickey, Binah and Raphael. I am glad that Saskia switched sides but I feel like she could have done it in a later book and it would have been much better. I am legitimately scared of Julian and Ingrid with their mind control potion (sksks i cant remember what it's called).
But the amount of gay rep in this book is great. Binah is aro/ace which I don't think I have ever read a book with an ace or aro character. Lottie, Ellie, Anastacia, Saskia and Mickey are all gay/bi/pan and I understand Jamie and Raphael being shipped because I really want then to date. There is definitely chemistry between them.
I am also really glad that Percy turned out to not be evil and was just under mind control because he seems like a really nice kid.
I'm about 92% sure that Ellie and Lottie will end up together. I'm glad because they're a hecka cute ship but I also feel like Lottie deserves someone kinda better..
Anyway, these two book are a really good read and I really recommend them. I cannot wait for more to come out!

„Księżniczka debiutuje” to drugi tom kronik Rosewood. Lottie i Ellie wracają do nas zaczynając drugi rok nauki w ekskluzywnej szkole.

Lottie, Ellie i Jamie mają jeszcze więcej przygód, zagadek i kłopotów niż w 1 tomie!

On mnie tak irytuję!!

W kontynuacji serii - "Księżniczka debiutuje" - poznajemy dalsze losy portmanki Lottie Pumpkin, nadal ukrywającej swoją tożsamość księżniczki Ellie Wolf i mojego największego ulubieńca Jamiego.

[OG Review] These books just give me the best feeling when reading them. I love the characters so much and especially the way their relationships with each other are developed here. The slow burn romance is killing me but I also appreciate that it's not straightforward (or straight) which makes it feel so much more realistic. Connie's expert magical realism is captivating. They are books that almost feel like home.

[Reread] Still stand by all of this. I love that even though the action danger is over by the end of the book, there's still a lot of pain there.

[Audiobook Reread] These books are so magical no matter how many times I read them. The brooding Jamie chapters start to come into the story with this book, but I admit, I'm not that keen on the voice of Jamie here. It's also really cool to hear the music box at the end.

I guess after 8 months of reading royalty novels and fairytale retellings, we can totally say that I'm in a princess and fairytale mood. And this book was, as expected after book one, therefore a very nice and pleasant read indeed. I have to admit that I didn't have all the details from the first book ready anymore, but luckily this book did help to bring all those memories back.

What I really loved about this book is that it continued where the previous book had stopped. It doesn't feel like we missed anything or that a million things have been happening outside the book and are only briefly mentioned. And this means that the story also continues with the tension and excitement from the finale of the previous book.

A new piece of the puzzle shows up at the beginning of this book and quite soon we're once more sucked into a new and thrilling mystery. Since this is a middle grade, it takes the characters a little longer to understand all the clues then it does take me, but it doesn't feel like this is just to create more drama or to make it seem harder. It feels natural and it fits the characters.

Speaking of those characters. This book truly helps the characters, and especially Lottie and Jamie, to grow a little more and to get more of an identity. The mystery is of course really nice, but it's the personal development for especially Lottie and her struggles with her new task keeping this story interesting and more than just a simple a who- and whydunnit.

Combine all of this with a nice writing style that makes reading so much fun and so easy and you have once more a really pleasant book that kept me interested from start to finish. I can't wait to see how the story continues.

"Nic nie zdoła cię przerazić, kiedy nie masz nic do stracenia."

[3/5]

Zamiast ciepłych uczuć względem postaci, to czułam jedynie irytację. I to wielką. Naprawdę wielką.

Same wydarzenia...były w porządku.
