First Contact #1

Haaken's Honour

Rate this book

The Ha'ak had simply come to trade. The universe had other ideas.

When a dirty, naked creature dashes onto their ship with armed Talit in desperate pursuit, they know something is up. When the creature begins to utter sounds that sound suspiciously like sentient speech, Captain Mauu finds himself in a quandary. The Ha'ak don't permit slave trading, while the Trade Confederation only extend rights to members. When the Talit claim Mauu and his crew have stolen their merchandise, Mauu finds himself in a quandary as the livelihood of his entire clan is at stake. He knows one thing. Even if he wasn't captivated by the being with the startling blue eyes, he could never stain his honour or that of his crew or his home world by participating in slavery. But how to claim the strange male so that he falls under member protection?

Leona is a longtime staunch supporter of human rights and environmental causes. Her favourite genre to read is M/M fiction and she particularly enjoys science fiction, fantasy, and action/suspense subgenres—especially if they have a nice seasoning of romance. She has far too many books on her Kindle, has overloaded her phone with even more and, when not reading, writing, being driven to distraction by her children, or being overlorded by her three cats, can be found trying to locate the portal that the sock monster uses to steal socks from her dryer.

So, despite the data saying I started this in April, I restarted this again this month...

And I liked it quite a bit. There were STILL a lot of typos and words drops (see updates) and that ending felt super-rushed, but I'm hoping there will be a Book 2.

I saw the low rating on amazon and decided to try it anyways... I mean it was only 104 pages right??

Seriously it was the longest 104 pages I’ve read in my life... and I skimmed most of the random news articles before each chapter. I really don’t know why kept reading this, really I should have abandoned pretty early on.

I enjoyed a majority of the characters, and I love romances with language barriers to that worked in my favor. But the story was flat and drug on, and honestly I can usually ignore enough editing issues to not let it effect my rating to much. But this was probably the worst editing I’ve ever seen in a book. And I read a lot of b-rated or even a lot of c-rated book that had better editing than this. I honestly don’t even think this was proof ready by the author or anyone else. I hate to sound harsh, but truly it was pure laziness on the authors part.

This was a good story marred by bad editing. Other than that I really enjoyed it. The world building was excellent, the characters had personalities, and the science was plausible. I look forward to reading more from this author. I just hope she gets a better editor before publishing in the future.

Great read

I really enjoyed this first contact novel. Good world building. Solid story and enjoyable characters. Low heat level. More well done story with romance angle than all out romance. I definitely recommend this for any sci fi lover.

Let me start by saying this; it appears there was some kind of mistake when this book was published and it was not completely edited.

I took 1.5 stars off because of the editing and the other .5 of a star for what I thought was a slightly rushed plot near the end.

If it weren’t for all of the editing mishaps, I would have easily given this story a 4 star rating.. maybe even a 5 star. As it stands, I’m conflicted. I want to give it a higher rating because the story is fantastic and seriously great. I’ve read quite a few books in the “alien sci-fi ship captain mm romance” genre.. I LOVE first contact type stuff in the mm genre, and this one is pretty great other than the editing!

I think this author is capable of writing captivating stories with a more realistic feel to the science fiction mm genre. And I will absolutely be follow her/him. I expect this author’s future works to be properly edited, and will definitely read more.

This ends in an abrupt cliffhanger... either that or there are chapters missing lol

In the future if this book is edited, I’d be more than willing to change my rating and review to more accurately describe it.

Holy. Crap.

I freaking LOVED this book. I can't really describe how much, but I'm going to try!

World building, first off and kinda most importantly was fantastic. I loved the little tidbits at the beginning of each chapter. They are short, informative, and entertaining. I loved getting little peeks of history and culture. I especially enjoyed the ones from the human perspective. The names made me smile. Honestly I was dazzled by how elaborate it all was from start to finish.

I was so happy that all their advanced tech wasn't unbelievably out there. Weird thing to be happy about but it gives a sense of reality to the book. It was advanced, but in a reasonable evolution sort of way. I especially like the translator system. Not instantaneous, but a program that has to basically learn the unknown language overtime. LOVED THAT. It made it feel so real! I especially like that they each had to make due with the stilted and simplistic period that comes naturally with learning new languages. Fabulous. There is also a pretty natural feeling progression as they understand each other better over time.

The plot was complex. There is a whole bunch of political intrigue and mystery. Kept me on the edge and I devoured this in one sitting.

Ok. Nothing is perfect and This isn't either. My biggest issue was mostly editing. There were some hiccups that were confusing. There were also a LOT of names and sometimes they weren't spelled the same. Which mainly sucked because some names sounded very similar. It got a bit confusing at times but was easy to figure out.

Bottom line: this book was amazballs. One of the best I've read in this genre for absolutely certain. Getting the next installment immediately because I won't be able to live without it!

I ended up taking a break between reading to finally finish this.. It was somewhat entertaining at times. The sex was weird and awkward to me, probably cus a strong connection between Mauu and Jethro was absent. It also felt like too much going on, with the mystery of Jethro's encounter with the Talit. Then it starts feeling like a cross between Dune and Stargate .. However I'm thinking movies not books FYI.. Of course now I can't remember what made me think of Dune .. Stargate.. that one is easy... buried gate.

Beyond all that.. the ending was seriously lacking and felt cut off in the middle of a speech. Abruptly with loose ends. Even with what appears to be the intention of a series, the ending is still too chopped off.

Most of fellow reviewers mention editing.. Yes it is TRUE.. I actually have seen much worse but I seem to come to expect edit problems from kindle books. Editing doesn't seem to be a priority and honestly, your basic word program spelling check could/would solve so many simple errors but enough of that bandwagon.. I liked the premise of it but it wasn't carried out efficiently for me.

I finished what I could manage to read of this book. Yeah, it was a DNF. It’s...badly written. I’m not sure how else to describe it. Sophomoric? Maybe, seems harsh. The editing was awful, the writing style immature, the characters unbelievable, descriptions boring, creative sci-fi underwhelming. There were moments that I laughed and it was the author’s intention that I did, but there were so many more that I just cringed. It feels like someone decided since they’d finally finished writing their book, they were going to publish it, everyone else be damned. Do not buy this book. Do not bother with this book, unless of course you enjoy self-flagellation. In that case, this book may be for you.

So why 2 stars instead of 1? Because the idea of the story could have been good. The execution was awful, but I liked the idea of it.

I marked this rating down a full star because of the lack of editing. I do not think that it was in a publishable (is that a word?) state.

It’s a good combination of sci-fi and a little smut. Big, hunky aliens. Who wouldn’t want to be invaded. However, it’s all a bit rushed. The romance that seems to be blossoming is between the human and his caretaker. Yet, suddenly he and the captain are in love? It doesn’t work for me. I never feel the romance. The alien/human sex is fun.

The underlying plot of various species and their political maneuverings to take advantage of the relatively under developed earth is fun. It’s a bit rushed at the end but it certainly shows an element of imagination.

This is a fun romp in space and, for you sci-fi addicts out there, it has a real ‘60s or ‘70s feel to it. Go explore.

Great world and great characters. I will definitely look forward to reading more in the series. I would have liked to see more of the relationship between Mauu and Jethro. The book is seriously in need of a good editor though. That and the slightly rushed feeling to the plot at the end of the book are what had me rounding the stars down instead of up.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Needs work

While the story itself is good it could be expanded and the romance felt rushed. The 2 mains didn't seem to interact and then they were married and in love. We also needed to see more from Jethro, he hardly had any from his point of view. Also a ton of grammatical errors and a few character mix ups.

A good sci-fi read

This was the first book I read by Leona Windwalker. It was a enjoyable read, however lots of spelling errors, take some enjoyment out of the read and make some parts hard to understand.

This book was a great start into the Ha'ak. Hope to see what happens more with captain and Jethro since we did end on cliff note. This did have a little more of sci fi to it and it was little low on romance. Cant wait to read book 2 and see what happens next with all the turmoil going on

It was okay

It started out nice, but then the plot got so complicated with intrigue, backstabbing, and false evidence that it became hard to follow. The typos and misspellings also added to the difficulty in reading the book.

A romance in deep space

First contact, political machinations, romance, intrigue and underhanded dealings as well as slave trade and a race to invade the human solar system..
Interesting and worth the read. Great galaxy building and detailed species invention

Great Book - Awesome Characters

I really liked this book. I loved the characters and the story. Jethro is my man. I have reread it a couple times. I really do hope there is more to the series.
There are some editing issues. I didnt think they were that noticable due to translator issues in the story. HOWEVER - this book is missing a chapter 10. So take that how you will.

Really Good

Lots of mm alien books have weak plots, but not this one. I enjoyed it thoroughly and am off to get the sequel now.
