A thief with golden eyes. The spy who loves her. A mad scientist who will break hearts to expose her secrets.
Shunned for her odd eyes and an unnerving habit of slipping into shadows, Lady Colleen Stewart refuses to be caged—should she decide to marry, it’ll be for love and to a man of her choice. After all, she’d rather be racing over rooftops than waltzing across ballroom floors. So when the only man to ever tempt her heart invites her on a covert mission, she leaps into danger.
Nicholas Torrington, Queen’s agent, is running out of time. While work has him chasing his tail, his sister grows increasingly ill, and Colleen, the woman he would make his bride, has acquired another, determined suitor. To coax his favorite thief back into his arms, he’ll break every rule and lead her through the underbelly of London on a hunt for a mad scientist and a cure for his sister.
But the discovery of a burned-out laboratory provides more questions than answers, and they find themselves caught in a deadly game where they have become the prey. Surviving the ambitions of their pursuers will bring everything into sharp focus as they risk their very lives.
Though Anne Renwick holds a Ph.D. in biology and greatly enjoyed tormenting the overburdened undergraduates who were her students, fiction has always been her first love. Today, she writes steampunk romance, placing a new kind of biotech in the hands of mad scientists, proper young ladies and determined villains.
I've given this a B- at AAR, so that's 3.5 stars rounded up.
A Reflection of Shadows is the third (and latest) book in Anne Renwick’s Elemental Web Chronicles – part of her steampunk series set in an alternate Victorian London. Each of the books features a different central couple and self-contained plot, and are thus designed to work as standalones; however, coming late to the party did have an effect on my reading experience, as I found myself a little lost to start with. With six books and a number of novellas and short stories set in this world already published, I’m guessing most of the worldbuilding was done in earlier books; had I read some of those, I may have got up to speed more quickly. But it’s often the reviewer’s lot to review series books out of order, so all I can do in this instance is say that if you like the sound of this one, you should probably pick up some of the earlier books in the series first.
Lady Colleen Stewart is just three days away from her twenty-fifth birthday, which will see her come into her inheritance of Craigieburn in Scotland, and into the fortune that goes with it. After her father’s death, her uncle, Lord Maynard, became her guardian, and she can’t wait to finally be free of him and of London – although she’ll miss her aunt Isabella, who is expecting her first child. While Colleen and her uncle don’t get along, he has at least never put any pressure on her to marry – until now, when he seems desperate to ensure her marriage to one Mr. Glover (whom Colleen had once – stupidly, she now acknowledges – taken as a lover). Colleen refuses in no uncertain terms; not only does she not want to marry Glover, she resents the attempt to force her into marriage. Besides, she is strongly attracted to Queen’s Agent Nicholas Torrington and has just agreed to allow him to court her.
Nicholas is a scientist – a cardiophysiologist – as well as a Queen’s Agent, and is desperate to find a treatment for his sister, whose heart is seriously damaged and could give out any day. He’s heard whispers of a scientist who has invented some sort of electrical device (akin to a pacemaker from the sound of it) that could save Anna – and learning the man is obsessed with the concept of transmutation gives Nick the opportunity to combine his current investigation into the operation of a shadowy organisation dabbling in sorcery with his search for the device.
It also affords him an unusual way to court his lady. Knowing of Colleen’s nocturnal activities as an operative for Witherspoon and Associates – a company that handles ‘private matters’ with discretion – her love of a challenge, her ability to move swiftly through London’s shadows and her keen night vision, Nick asks for her help in searching Dr. Farquhar’s laboratory – but their plans are thwarted when they arrive to find the house on fire – and Farquhar missing.
With Nick on the trail of an underground organisation believed to be experimenting on humans in the attempt to prove the existence of shifters, his search for a cure for his sister, and Colleen becoming unwittingly entangled in her uncle’s nefarious dealings, there’s quite a lot going on in this novel, but Ms. Renwick cleverly weaves her plot-threads together, arriving at the climax of the story to expose a truly despicable scheme. The villain is a really nasty piece of work, and the author creates a strong sense of peril as Colleen and Nick have to use all their ingenuity and determination in order to keep themselves alive and try to find a way out of a seemlngly hopeless situation. (And there are a few moments that are not for the squeamish!) I found myself racing through the second half of the book, as the plot twists and pacing kicked up – although the way things were resolved was something of an anticlimax.
A Reflection of Shadows was an entertaining read with a well-constructed plot, a pair of engaging protagonists and a handful of nicely-drawn secondary characters. I liked Nick and Colleen, who clearly knew and understood one another well and has the good sense to admit they’d met their match in each other. But on the downside, I felt as though the romantic and character development must have happened in the previous books in the series, because their relationship here is pretty much a done deal, so what we get is an established couple working together to bring down the bad guys – which is fine; they’re well-matched and work together well. But it’s not what I was expecting.
The writing is strong and Ms. Renwick can clearly create likeable characters and craft an intriguing plot, but my disappointment in the romance means I can only award the novel a qualified recommendation. That said, I liked enough about it to be interested in reading more of the author’s work, so I may go back and pick up some of the earlier books in the series at some point.
A Reflection of Shadows is another exciting adventure set in Ms. Renwick’s clever steampunk historical London. Building on the foundation set in The Iron Fin, the story further explores the idea of humans exhibiting animal-like traits. This time around Colleen, with her golden eyes and increased dexterity like a cat, uses her unique features as a thief of goodwill. In her journeys and among her society engagements, she’s befriended the handsome Nicholas Torrington, an agent of the queen, with ties to organizations and characters explored in previous titles.
As an agent of the queen Nick has seen it all, but when he hears of an experimental device that may save his dying sister’s weak heart, his missions become personal. Seizing the opportunity to express his admiration to Colleen and win her over by making her his partner, Nick proposes marriage as a matter of convenience, but intends to make Colleen his bride. The pair work to discover the truth behind layers of subterfuge and hope to save Anne in the process.
While I found the opening of A Reflection of Shadows a bit confusing as I tried to piece together the separate yet intertwining stories behind Nick and Colleen, the story soon picked up pace and was gripping until the very end. I love watching the pair work as truly equal partners. Nick trusts Colleen completely and respects her intellect and decision-making. He knows the way to her heart isn’t through flowers and dances, but secretive roof-top missions and clandestine rendez-vous. He is her perfect partner, and I loved watching him pursue her affection.
Colleen loves her life and isn’t certain she wants to give up anything for a man, so it’s with true admiration and a bit of relief that she finds herself falling for Nick. While always attracted to the man, she is cautious with her heart and is rewarded with her perfect match in Nick. What happens to Colleen in the name of furthering medical science is horrifying, and the author doesn’t let the pair come together easily. The traitorous villains surround the couple and nearly finish their romance before it truly has time to bloom.
A Reflection of Shadows is filled with exciting adventure, surprising twists, and a lovely, sexy romance. I adore Colleen and Nick. Their story is an excellent addition to the Elemental Web Chronicle world.
My Rating: B+ Liked It A Lot Review copy provided by the author Originally posted at That's What I'm Talking About
If you enjoy a story with characters that you love to hate then this story has that to offer in addition to a swoony romance. Nick’s and Colleen’s search for answers leads them down a dark path of discovery where, even they who have seen the underbelly of London, are aghast to the secrets that they uncover and the practices that they find being undertaken all in the name of science. There is never a dull moment in A Reflection of Shadows and I thoroughly enjoyed the blending of science, mystery, and romance!
This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Anne Renwick, Author. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
Having read and enjoyed A Reflection of Shadows, I jumped at the chance to listen to and review the audiobook version. I found that I delighted in the story equally as I did the first time around. Ms. Renwick pens a clever steampunk historical London, and the tales are full of exciting adventure. The story explores the idea of humans exhibiting animal-like traits (something that started in the previous title). Colleen, with her golden eyes and increased dexterity, uses her unique features as a thief of goodwill. In her journeys and among her society engagements, she’s befriended the handsome Nick, an agent of the queen.
As an agent of the queen, Nick has seen it all, but when he hears of an experimental device that may save his dying sister’s weak heart, the mission becomes personal. Seizing the opportunity to express his admiration of Colleen, and win her over by making him his partner, Nick proposes as a matter of convenience, but intends to make Colleen his bride. The pair work to discover the truth behind layers of subterfuge and hope to save his sister in the process.
Overall, the story was gripping. I love watching the pair work as truly equal partners. Nick trusts Colleen completely and respects her intellect and decision-making. He knows the way to her heart isn’t through flowers and dances, but secretive roof-top missions and clandestine rendez-vous. He is her perfect partner and I loved watching him pursue her affection.
Narration: This is the third of the Elemental Web Tales stories narrated by Ms. Anais Inara Chase. A Reflection of Shadows is shared in the alternating POVs of Colleen and Nick. Ms. Chase presents a British accented female narrator for both the male and female parts, with dialogue altered slightly to fit the age, gender, and station of the speaker. The primary two characters’ voices aren’t very distinct from the narrator, but a mild attempt to differentiate is noticeable. Overall, Ms. Chase has a pleasing voice; she adds appropriate pauses and provides loose emotional cues; however, I prefer a bit more of a distinction between characters.
A Reflection of Shadows is filled with exciting adventure, surprising twists, and a lovely, sexy romance. I adore Colleen and Nick. Their story is an excellent addition to the Elemental Web Chronicle world.

A young woman forced to live with her insufferable uncle in London instead of her own home in Scotland, at least until her 25th birthday, which is only days away. Colleen has been earning money to fund herself through acting as a sneak thief, she'll need it since she has no plans to marry.
Nick is a scientist and a spy for the Queen. He's seen Colleen racing on rooftops with her cat behind her. Just like a feline, the woman has golden eyes and near-perfect night vision. He's obviously intrigued by her.
When Nick and Colleen find themselves thrust into a situation involving transmutation, forcing a heart to keep beating, a mad scientist and a forced engagement, they know it'll be better to work together.
I found this novel invigorating. Not only does the author give us each a clear idea of who the main characters are but you find that you are unable to put it down. The action is clear and well-written, we can picture each scene as we bite our nails wondering what will happen next and who is at the head of this criminal organization experimenting on animals and poaching on the land Colleen owns in Scotland.
Steampunk fans will love Anne’s books: medical mystery/romance set in Victorian England with all the creatures and contraptions steampunk brings. This book in particular was wicked fun…a friends to lovers story involving a Queen’s agent and a cat burglar and the experimentation of bringing someone back to life. In real life, the author has a Ph.D. in microbiology, so the medical aspects of all her books are both intelligently detailed and accessible.
I read the whole story in one sitting. This book has the perfect balance of science, romance, mystery and terrific characters.
Nick has loved Colleen for a long time and they finally have a chance to see if they will suit each other. Nick is an unusual man for the times, willing to give Colleen the control she desperately craves after being in the control of her uncle. Nick is willing to let Colleen make her own decisions while being supportive, he’s open to compromise, willing to live in the city and/or Scotland and keep her interested with lots of adventures. I sure hope we get to hear more about them in the future.
Nick and Colleen are two very engaging characters, who are both clever and well suited to an adventurous lifestyle. And well suited to each other.
I enjoyed Nicks sense of humour plus his obvious affection and care for his family and Colleen.
Sorcha, the cat sith provides an interesting character, bringing an element of magic and intrigue to the story.
I like Nicks mother, sister and father, they are eminently practical, easy going, good in a crisis and very supportive of Nick and welcoming to Colleen. Isabelle is a wonderful support for Colleen and I was happy that things are turning out well for her too.
While this story has lots of Renwick’s trademark science in it, there’s less of a focus on it this time and more of a focus on romance and mystery than in some of her previous books.
While there was lots of kissing, I had to wait until half way through the book before there were any big sex scenes. I’m glad that the author gave us some more spice in her books. She writes excellent, hot sex scenes and I hope she will continue to put them into her stories. I didn’t find it to be a distraction from the storyline at all but rather, a nice addition which helps to round out the characters.
There was a plot twist which surprised me which made the book more interesting.
I was pleased that there was an epilogue because I hate it when a book stops abruptly.
This is now one of my most favourite of all Renwick’s books. I’m going to go back and read it again, slowly, so I can enjoy it without needing to rush through to find out what happens.
Series Info/Source: This is the third book in the Elemental Steampunk Tales series. I bought this for my Kindle.
Story (4/5): This was another story set in the same world as the previous story but featuring two new characters, Lady Colleen Stewart and Nicholas Torrington. Lady Colleen has been working secretly as a sneak thief in hopes of getting enough money to support her lands in Scotland. These lands will be granted to her shortly (they are in care of her rather awful Uncle). Nick is a Queen’s agent and is desperately trying to find a cure for his sister’s weak heart. The two have a lot of history together because of their night-time stealthy jobs. When one of Lady Colleen’s suitors ends up being a bit bonkers, she takes on a risky job to finally be rid of both her unwanted suitor and her uncle. In the course of this job she finds out that things link up with some research Nick was following up on about therapies for weak hearts.
I really enjoyed this story. There is a lot of adventure and action. My only complaint is that it feels like we are missing a lot of Colleen and Nick’s background. As with previous books there is a lot of steampunkish medical science in here that is great fun to read about; I really enjoy this aspect of these stories.
Characters (4/5): Colleen and Nick were both wonderfully fun characters; I really enjoyed reading about them. They both trust each other and have very strong senses of self. Again, my largest complaint is that I felt like they got to know each other and have adventures together largely before this story takes place. There are some well done side characters as well.
Setting (4/5): This book takes place in the same world as all the other books in this series. Unlike the previous books, this book is set mainly in London. I enjoy the historical setting and all the steampunk elements a lot.
Writing Style (4/5): No complaints about the writing style here, it’s very engaging and easy to read. If you’ve enjoyed previous books by Renwick you’ll enjoy this one as well. This Elemental Steampunk Tale was a bit longer than the first two in the series. I continue to really enjoy how Renwick weaves medical and scientific terms into the story, it keeps things interesting. I also love the balance of science, steampunk elements, adventure, magic, and romance in these stories.
My Summary (4/5): Overall this was on par with Renwick’s previous books in this series. This was a bit longer than the previous books and I enjoyed the characters a bit more (I just like more action and daring). I would recommend this book to those who have enjoyed previous books by Renwick or who enjoy steampunk adventure with some romance.
Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Explicit content: Several detailed sex scenes, violence, death Actual rating: 4.25 stars
This was an enjoyable read! I wasn't expecting much from the genre and the fact that it was a standalone, but this was a pleasant surprise. Obviously the main focus of the story is the romance, and it's really well done. The characters are likable, engaging, and three-dimensional, and their relationship is never problematic or worrisome. There's never drama for the sake of drama, misunderstandings, all the sort of stuff that plagues most romance-focused stories. Rather, the drama comes from their hesitation to get married, and the actual plot that makes up the backbone of the story.
The plot, too, is interesting, and both sides of the story weaves together nicely. I don't want to get into too much detail, as it kinda ends up in a weird direction, but the untangling of what was going on and who was involved was fun. This couple already has a Batman-and-Catwoman vibe, and them playing detective together really cemented that.
However, the book does have its flaws. The last 25% or so is really a drag. People get captured and are essentially just prisoners trying to get out for the bulk of this section of the story. They have a very miserable time, and the villains aren't really interesting or sympathetic enough to redeem all the misery. The pace slowed way down, too, since the characters are just trapped in one place for a long period of time, and there's nothing really left to discover or do. I think it would have been much more interesting if only one character was imprisoned and the other had to figure out where they were and how to break them out, or something more action-driven.
The steampunk element was also a little underwhelming in my opinion, as the story doesn't really dive into what makes their technology and stuff possible or how their timeline diverges from ours, but it brought in some nice color, so I can't complain too much.
Other than that, though, this story was very enjoyable. I'd recommend it for fans of the fantasy romance genre, especially if they have an interest in steampunk or period romance.
5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration An outstanding spy thriller and unusual Steampunk mystery
This audiobook was so cool. If you want a spy and a thief running across foggy rooftops, dodging bullets, and solving a mystery, then this is the audiobook for you! The romance was satisfying as well. There were lots of plot twists. I also loved the intrepid couple, Lady Colleen Stewart and Nicholas Torrington. Nicholas was admirable and respectful of all women. He had his work cut out for him in wooing the unique Lady Colleen to become his wife at the same time as they both tried to stay alive and catch the villains.
Beware: there is some brief body horror that was rather revolting. It was definitely darker and more horrifying than the tiny bit in the author's “In Pursuit of Dragons”, but maybe it is about the same level as in “The Golden Spider”. In addition, some villains were cruel to cats. Regardless of these dark elements, I loved immersing my self in Anne Renwick's Steampunk Victorian world once again. There was a nail-biting mystery and simmering sexual tension. Love scenes were steamy and not too frequent. I adored the heroine's feline sidekick, too.
The narrator Anais Inara Chase did a wonderful job. Her smoothly elegant English accent elevated the story. I only wish that she pitched the hero's voice a little lower. Still, she is the right narrator for this original and unique Steampunk romance series that always includes some biological or medical science.
I think I may have read another title by this author. I will have to go back and double check. That was a great book and this is a great book. There are some similarities in the steampunk world that make me think they may be related books. The story is excellent, the characters very well developed, and the story has complexity. One complaint I often have in romance novels is when I see places where the story could have been better developed to increase tension. This is not one of those books. In fact, there was so much tension, at times, that I had to put it down because I was becoming to agitated to continue reading at that point.
My only complaint is ascribing emotions to steam servants. They are controlled by punch card programing. I do not find it believable that a steam maid would be able to be irritated when a person selects a program for a simple hair style over a program for a complicated hair style. It makes no sense at all. Nor do I find it believable that a steam butler could get distressed over things. It is a robot that requires punch cards to tell it what to do. Even as far as the technology goes for a steampunk world, they wouldn't have advanced enough for emotional programing. Even given the alternate direction of science, we are only at what might be the very early stages of that possibility now. So I don't find it believable in the time period the story is set.
From the moment you start this simmering tale of passion, humour and dark murderous deeds, you are whisked away into the Victorian age, where rules, decorum, corsets and buttons, hold the characters within a suffocating etiquette! Nick Torrington is a smooth, heroic, intelligent, musclebound and handsome man, who has been in love with Lady Colleen Stewart ever since meeting her on Queen's Agency business, he just has to persuade her to become his wife. Lady Colleen, with her magical amber eyes, is both beautiful, intelligent, surprising and enterprising. She is a spectacular character. The sexual attraction and tension bubbles all the way through this wonderfully gripping and dark tale. But it is Anne Renwick's incredibly descriptive and atmospheric writing that makes this book succeed. You feel like you are sitting in the room with these characters, watching this story unfold. The medical and scientific descriptions will have you turning the pages as fast as you can. Her villains are truly dark and merciless, in order to succeed and twists and turns abound. I found some parts extremely intense. I loved this third entry in the wonderful Elemental Web Series. I think it's Anne's best so far, really bringing her characters and story to life. I cannot wiat for the next adventure...... As this tale was truly a triumph!!
ONE GRIPPING WHIRLWIND!!! Holla hell! Anne hit the ground running, blazing forward on the wings of fire, riding through the winds of darkness with a vengeance, blowing this baby into the eye of the storm, bursting it into a tailspin with a shocking culmination. A churning throng, chocked full of vexing circumstances and daunting events, exposing those swirling emotions running rampant, thrusting them into play front and center. Action packed, hard hitting, heart pounding, pulse racing, nailbiting, mind-blowing, chart topping bombshell, revving it up and blasting this little fella to life brilliantly. Add distress, turmoil and perplexing situations along with a boatload of dark dastardly deeds, you have one thrilling rollercoaster ride. Bridging the trials and tribulations, along with a slew of shocking twists and unexpected turns, tempting our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. The characters are complex and realistic with qualities and traits that transform into outstanding personalities. The scenes are so colorfully descriptive its easy to interpret each scenario as they play out perfectly. Amazing job Anne, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
This was a fun adventure that kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next! Lady Colleen Stewart is Laird of Craigieburn Castle in Scotland, but must wait in London until she is 25 years old before she can finally take control of her inheritance from her guardian Uncle. While she waits, she uses her unique abilities to earn extra money as a sneak thief. Her abilities which include excellent night vision, along with her big black Scottish cat, catch the attention of the wrong sort of people and bring to mind Scottish Fairy Tales about Cat Sith, witches who could transform into cats nine times. Nicholas Torrington is a Queen’s Agent who has crossed paths several times with Lady Stewart. He is trying to hunt down information about a medical device used to stimulate a weak heart. They join forces and then the trouble really begins! I look forward to more from this author.
Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. What an interesting read. Not my kind of story I would typically read but I did enjoy it. We meet Colleen, thief with slit eyes, with a cat sith as a companion. She is working to keep her estate afloat and away from her scheming uncle. What she didn't know what that he gave her hand in marriage to a sneaky and sleazy man who wont take no for an answer. In walks nick thorington, a queens agent and a man who has fallen for colleen. Nick steps up to the plate and tells the weasel colleen hand is already spoken for. A turn of events trying to save Nick's sister and finding a machine that is supposed to kick start the heart. Plus finding sorsha in the hands of a madman. Will colleen and nick uncover the deadly plot or will they become victims next?
I love a little jaunt in Victorian England and Anne Renwick is the perfect author to go there with. Lady Colleen is a delightful character and her secret life makes her a definite mystery. Nicholas is a dashing gentleman and the two of them just can't get enough of each other. I found their romance to be just too cute. As usual in these Elemental Web Tales, there are lots of gadgets and Colleen has some interesting places to hide things. These two will face mortal danger in their effort to get out from under Colleen's uncle's thumb. The story takes some intriguing turns along the way and was never boring. I continue to be delighted by Anne Renwick's stories and look forward to many more. Highly recommend!
My favorite! I freaking love Lady Colleen Stewart's character and skill set; I love that Nick is attracted to her for her brazen, bold, sneaky nature; and I love the extremely flirtatious relationship they have had going for years. There is a real foundation between the characters before we are privy to the romance that makes everything fall more naturally. It's fun, it creates excellent adventures, and the ballroom scene is probably one of my favorites. I am so sad that this one isn't available as an audiobook (yet?).
I also really enjoyed that the main conflict was significantly darker and creepier than the other books. While there is a predictable trajectory to the genre that still held true, the way it played out was surprising and therefor refreshing.
Another fun, flirty story featuring two characters with striking chemistry, a touch of magic, and an action-packed ending! The perfect escapism I needed, delivered in a thrilling, well written fashion.
Colleen reminded me a little bit of Catwoman, and she is one of my favourite heroes of the series so far. I found her to be strong, clever, and resourceful. Nick is charming, thoughtful, and intelligent, which made him a great romantic interest for Colleen. They had a great, steamy romance and were my favourite part of the story. Add in some delightfully evil villains, some intense twists, and an intense ending that had me hooked until the final moment.
A great bit of escapism and fun for anyone looking for a short, adventurous, passionate, exciting read!
Fiercely independent heroines who are sassy and unique. Alpha heroes with a strong romantic streak. And villains you just love to hate. All this with the author’s distinctive blend of science and supposition. Into this world walk Colleen and Nick; the lady sneak thief and the Queen’s agent. Both of them are searching for solutions to their problems, little realizing that they might be each other’s best answers. I adore the books in this series. The only thing I don’t like about them is when I reach the end and they’re over. Already I’m craving my next foray into this fascinating steampunk world. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
This latest Elemental Web tale is a brilliant read, and I highly recommend it to all lovers of steampunk and paranormal/supernatural stories. With a romantic sprinkle on top, this book makes for excellent reading, and I really loved it - so much so, I stayed up reading until 0300 to finish it! I can't wait to see who the author introduces us to next, and what thrilling area of cryptozoology we'll be introduced to! NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
I am fairly new at reading steampunk books and I have loved each and every one of these stories by Anne Renwick. This one has an intelligent and exciting heroine, and of course, a male that matches her intelligence and is not afraid to follow her lead. Anne Renwick knows how to keep the story rolling along and builds a completely believable world. I hate to say this, but I just have to love her bad guys, too. You have to read these books. They really are marvelous.
It's another great story. I love the steampunk vibe that it has. It had just the right amount of paranormal bend to it. I really liked Colleen and Nick together. Though not sure if she wants to marry him, after having a heart-stopping adventure (almost literally) together, she knows they are meant to be. I love this world.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is probably my favorite of the novellas in this Steampunk espionage series. Can a sneak thief and a Queen's agent work together? Can a fictional engagement become real?
Colleen has been working as a sneak thief, who only takes morally righteous commissions, to renovate her crumbling inheritance and get away from the rule of her uncle who wants to arrange a her marriage. Nick Torrington is a Queen's agent searching for a cure to his sister's heart problems.
Anne Renwick does it again! Another great steampunk adventure, A Reflection of Shadows is a tightly written story with an excellent cast of characters, led by a smart, independent woman and a hero with a fierce loyalty. This book grabs you and pulls you into the story so hard you don't want to put it down. I love all of her books, can't wait for the next one.
I was amazed by A Reflection of Shadows. Almost instantly I was drawn in and quickly lost myself amongst the pages of Colleen and Nick’s tale. I liked Colleen’s strong mindedness and her keen intellect. Nick is a wonderful character too. He’s supportive and caring. I like his sense of humor. It definitely made me chuckle on numerous occasions. I loved going on this adventure with them.
Jonathan McCready may have written a spy parody but I see Bradley James Sr. and Ursula Valentine in Nicholas Torrington and Colleen Stewart. Such unconventional competent persons on a quest are a delight to the imagination.
I received this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
A well written story that will keep you up at night until finished. There is mystery, secret experiments, the ton and of course a sizzling love story. Thanks for the great read, looking forward to the next one.
I wish it would have been longer. More of the interaction between hero & heroine. Maybe a bit grittier. Would have loved more rooftop jaunts with the couple & more witty banter.
Renwick sets her historical romance in a fantasy version of 1885 London. Twenty-five year old Lady Colleen Stewart is a skilled thief with yellow eyes. Nicholas Torrington is a Queen's agent and scientist. The two collaborate to find a device that may help save the life of Nicholas's sister.
A bit slower than what I normally tend to read. The character development is good and the author's writing style flows nicely. Needs a bit more action in the beginning to draw readers in better, but overall an okay read.
