I adored Stephanie Laska’s Dirty, Lazy, Keto No Time to Cook Cookbook and her initial cookbook Dirty, Lazy, Keto Cookbook, but Dirty, Lazy, Keto Fast Food Guide: 10 Carbs or Less wasn’t up to the same standard.
Part of it wasn’t Stephanie and Bill Laska’s fault. The fast-food world changes so quickly that the book was out of date as soon as it was published. These listings could only be complete on a website, and who has time for that? For example, the Laskas laud Hardees/Carl Jr. with being keto friendly and offering actual lettuce-wrapped burgers; however, as of the time of this writing, the restaurant chain no longer advertises those items, although you can probably still get them if you ask politely. Secondly, if you’re a keto snob, 10 grams of carbs for one meal is a nonstarter; however, if you’re a true keto snob, you wouldn’t be reading Stephanie Laska’s cookbooks, so maybe that’s not a real complaint.
Now to the good. The Laskas note that most fast-food restaurants will accommodate you with lettuce wraps rather than buns. And they point out the chains that aren’t a good stop for the keto conscience: Church’s Chicken, Chick-Fil-A, Jamba Juice, Panera Bread (despite the many salads) and Ono Hawaiian BBQ, Surprisingly, most pizzeria chains except Pizza Hut have keto-friendly options for when the family’s happily downing a pizza.
Don’t get me wrong: This book is still definitely worth a read, but it’s the kind of book you check out of the library or on Kindle Unlimited rather than buy and consult again and again.
I would recommend this for the uninitiated or need a good starting place to Keto. I liked the contrasting recommendations for each topic, but overall most of the info could be found with a quick google search before eating somewhere.
I love this book!!!! It so helps take the guess work out of trying to figure out where to go or what you can have without stressing out. Stephanie has definitely done all of the hard work for you. These are so many popular resturants. You can easily find something at all of these places. I think my favorite parts are the Authors Picks for each restaurant, it's nice to see what someone else might choose and put into perspective what all you can have. It did really open my eyes to that when I am ordering from a restaurant how much extra net carbs I've been eating that I didn't even realize. I had never heard of anyone adding flour to omelets. I just assumed omelets were just eggs with proteins added in. Wow was I wrong lol. Everything is easy to read and understand. A book that you will want to leave in your car so that you always have it to refer to. Honestly a great book to have!! Thank you Stephanie for making things so much easier and doing all of the hard work.
There was nothing groundbreaking in this keto read, but it is still worth it. It’s got solid info about low carb options for several popular fast food chains. The carbs counts and menu items seem well researched and up-to-date. This was available on Kindle Unlimited and was a quick read. I would recommend it most for keto newbies or to purchase as a reference when you end up at a fast food restaurant. For veterans there won’t be any, “WOW, I didn’t know I could eat THAT” but you mind find a few good ideas about how to order new combos at places like Starbucks to mix it up a bit.
I ordered a paperback copy to keep in my car. Then I ordered a Kindle copy because it was so cheap.
This book has very useful information. I'm trying to eat by the keto plan but find it daunting. The plan is so different from what everyone is used to eating. I find I'm just too lazy to prepare meals and snacks for each day. This book has many places in my area that I can choose from. The book is separated by category; sandwich, chicken, chinese, etc. There are places that I enjoy that aren't in the book but by comparing with a menu in this book I will be able to make wise choices. Thank you for a great tool as I start my Lego way of life.
Awesome book- if you’re realistic about being Keto
I love being keto, but sometimes you need realistic food options when you’re not at home and this book does JUST THAT.. it gives you so many food options when you just want to switch it up.
As a MAJOR foodie, I really do enjoy going out to eat. I’ve always viewed eating out with friends as an activity and something we could always bond over. This book has shown me that I have so many options when it comes to eating out.. as I could go almost anywhere. I just need to be smart about what I choose to eat- but you could always make it work.
Thank you so much, Stephanie and Bill, for your hard wOrk and tenacious research in creating this invaluable guide to help us navigate the frightworld of fast food! EVERYONE who has embraced a low-carb lifestyle, from strict keto to Atkins Maintenance needs this book; we can now confidently return to our "Never again" spots and eat wisely and well. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the pizza crust receipe; I was surprised and pleased to realize I already had all of the ingredients on hand.
Thanks for the heartfelt read. It made me realize I was over eating from the beginning. It also made me realize why this didn’t work the first time. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am more mindful of how much I eat and (really) how many carbohydrates I consume in a day. Uhm 🤔 that’s why I’m not losing very quickly or steadily. Worth 10 bucks just for the wake up call. interesting take on fast food and what just one “little bite” of the wrong thing can lead to.
I have been following a low carb diet for over 7 months and have lost about 50 lbs so I thought this book could be a great way to get information on fast food choices I could make to fit in with my lifestyle. I am not interested in doing full on kept because I think that is a fad diet that does not hold up to long term health and weight loss, but I like making low carb choices when I can and that can be hard to do when you are out and about, so this is a great easy to read guide and very helpful!
The authors are informative, helpful, and realiatic. Lots of coffee listings for those who need it. I've been struggling with keto/low carb eating due to the strictness required but need to make this change per my doctor's recommendations to lower my A1C and maintain better control of my Type 2 Diabetes. Having worked with increasing my physical activity and medications, only dietary changes in my carb intake will make a difference at this point. Thank you.
Useful to have as a reference of nutrition facts in the car or online to pull up when ordering from a fast food chain. The tips on what to order in each restaurant are good and written in a nice friendly style.
Loses one star only because I expected more in depth research on how healthy the food in each chain is (like one gets from Flavcity's Bobby on YouTube as he considers additives, meat sourcing, etc).
Love the lists for being able to eat keto when on the road. It can be so hard to not go off the diet when all your options seem so carb loaded. Why so few places have options without bread or breading on food is beyond my comprehension!!! Thanks for all your tricks!!!
Excellent resource for eating out. Skip the bun or bread, yet still enjoy a healthy and yummy burger. Carbs really add up quick, even in drinks. I won this book from Goodreads Giveaways as ebook from Amazon Kindle, and the motivating weight loss success stories of the authors, Stephanie and William Laska. Thank you!
This is a very practical guide—easy to navigate and understand. My only suggestion would be the include Zaxby’s in your next edition. It’s a regional chain, yes, and probably has nothing under 10 net carbs on their menu, but as a former Zaxby’s devotee, I would appreciate knowing if there’s ANYTHING I can eat there.
This is very easy to follow. It lists tons of restaurants and helps making choices easier. Now I go out with friends and make good choices at the same time without guilt.
Since this book is main!y a carb counter...which we really need. It's good to keep handy. Not as much fun to read as her first one,but I have them a four for all the hard work.
This is really a written hack on carbohydrates at all the fast food restaurants. If you go into this book wanting to know if you can eat lunch and stay keto then you’re OK
This book is the most motivating book I've seen for Keto. It gives doable advice. Keto can be tough but the information in this book shows how you can still enjoy food that is Keto without depriving yourself. I recommend it.
Very helpful in giving you options for what to order and not blow your Keto lifestyle. Gave me great ideas and highlights about mistakes I have been making. Thanks for the tips
Was shocked and pleased by some of the results. I loved all of these books. As a newbie I found them easy to understand. The info was helpful and to the point. Not a lot of science which I appreciated. Just down home quality information. Highly recommend.
I really appreciated the thoroughness of this guide. As someone who has considered the Keto diet in the past, I think this was a great way to really understand what it really is like to live it.
** I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway and all opinions are my own. **
I downloaded this low carb guide so I would have the reference at my fingertips on days I’m out running errands and forget to plan ahead for meals. It’s really helped several times!
