[Majo no Takkyūbin] #2

Rate this book

Before realizing that a second book was being translated and released this year, I thought I had this franchise figured out. One book. One movie. Still, one happy me.

Now imagine my shock when I learned we are getting a six-book-deep dive into Kiki’s life as she grows older, all the way to her saying “I do”?? Well, joke’s on me because this is very good news, and I am vibrating with excitement. We are already well on our way as the third book is being translated so apparently, I have a whole Kiki life ahead of me.

Kiki and the New Magic picks up after Kiki’s first year of apprenticeship, when she returns to the seaside town and continues working as a delivery girl. On the surface, things are going well. Kiki is more settled, more confident, and more familiar with the people around her. But this time, her worries feel a little more like wheels within wheels.

Kiki starts questioning the work she has chosen. She loves flying, and she loves helping people, but what if the things she delivers aren't always good things? What if she is unknowingly carrying something that could hurt someone else? Those doubts gradually weigh on her until she eventually loses her ability to fly.

I really liked this part of the story because the “losing her magic” plot feels less like a grand magical crisis and more like a very relatable experience of growing up. Sometimes you can be doing something you once felt certain about and suddenly start wondering whether you are actually doing the right thing. Once that doubt takes hold, even something you were once good at can become difficult.

Kiki is also noticeably more adolescent in this book. She gets jealous, becomes insecure, wants to wear something other than her usual black clothes, makes mistakes, and lets her emotions get the better of her. Basically, she is becoming a teenager and unfortunately, being a witch does not exempt you from teenage angst.

Her relationship with Tombo also gets a little more attention this time around. I remember thinking in the first book that Tombo didn't feel nearly as significant as he did in the movie, so I was curious to see where their relationship would go. For the longest time, I thought the Kiki and Tombo relationship I knew was mostly just another Miyazaki's touch, so it was genuinely nice to see their friendship developing here.

That said, I can understand why some readers might find the structure a little tiring. Almost every chapter follows the same beat: Kiki gets a delivery request, something goes wrong (often because she did something she probably shouldn't have), she stumbles through it, and then she walks away with a lesson learned. The first book already had this episodic rhythm, but with more stories packed in here, the pattern becomes much more obvious—and after a while, the individual deliveries can start to blur together.

But I am unfortunately very easy to be manipulated emotionally with a sentimental story.

Because while I noticed the repetition, I also found myself caring more and more about the people Kiki met along the way. The linked short-story format actually worked really well for me in that sense. Some characters who appear briefly in one story can return later, sometimes becoming the focus of another chapter and I really enjoyed seeing how Kiki's little encounters gradually become part of people's lives.

This is probably another message that the author would like to tell all children that if you feel discouraged on any day or find yourself at a dead end, turn to the people around you. Friends and family can give you the strength to keep moving forward that reminder matters more as we get older, because we often forget and think that we are standing alone in a place where we cannot find a way out. Not only that, but this book also has a surprising number of stories about aging, regret, and the passage of time. There is something particularly bittersweet about watching this young girl, who is still figuring out her own life, become a small part of other people's lives too.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. Maybe it's because Kiki is already so strongly associated with the imagery of Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service, that I could not help imagining the seaside town through the lens of the movie's European-inspired setting. Yet the book also has a slightly different atmosphere of its own. Certain descriptions of the places Kiki visits gave me this autumnal, almost gothic feeling, and I absolutely loved it. Very witchy vibe.

My only disappointment with the installment was actually the new magic. I was genuinely excited to find out what Kiki's new magic would be, wondering if it would something completely different and if she would discover a talent of her own. Unfortunately, the large part of this booking was not that as we don't really get there until the very end. And when Kiki starts learning how to make the sneeze medicine, I couldn't help feeling a little underwhelmed because it is, in a way, another form of magic very closely connected to her mother's. Maybe I wanted something a little more Kiki.

All in all, it may not be as magical as the first book in the traditional sense, but it feels more emotionally grounded. Kiki is growing up, and unfortunately, growing up means realizing that even when you finally achieve the thing you have dreamed about, you can still wonder what comes next. For now, though, the delivery route continues, and so does my journey through Kiki’s life. Broomstick ready, next book please!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Kiki's Delivery Service was one of the very first Studio Ghibli movies I ever watched, so Kiki has always held a special place in my heart. A few years ago, I stumbled across the first novel in a bookstore in Seattle, and I haven't read the rest of the series until now. I was also lucky enough to receive an ARC of the first English translation of this sequel, which made finally returning to Kiki even more special.

This still has all the warmth and quiet charm I associate with Kiki's world, but I found myself wishing there was a little more variety in the storytelling. Almost every chapter follows the same rhythm: Kiki receives a delivery request, encounters a small obstacle, learns a lesson, and moves on to the next customer. After a while, the structure became repetitive enough that the individual stories started blending together.

That said, I really enjoyed seeing Kiki a little older and more confident than she was in the first book. Her growing friendship with Tombo was sweet, and I liked watching her wrestle with questions about purpose, responsibility, and what it means to keep growing after you've already achieved your dream.

While I don't think this installment captures quite the same sense of wonder as the original, it's still a cozy return to a character I've loved for years. Fans of Kiki will probably enjoy spending more time in her world, even if this wasn't quite as magical as I'd hoped.

🧹📦 Kiki and the New Magic 📦🧹
Oh I loved this so much! This was just as cozy, whimsical, and feel good as book one. I loved the first book and knew this one was going to be amazing.

Kiki is back, still doing her deliveries, but she is older now. I loved seeing her growth and how she is starting to think bigger about her life and her magic.

I absolutely adored this and will happily keep reading any new releases in this series!

------------------- ⋆。˚ ☁︎ ˚。⋆。˚☾˚。⋆ --------------------

this feels like stepping back into a world that moves exactly at the pace of a warm breeze over a seaside town. a year after starting her delivery service, kiki is adjusting to the soft weight of being a hometown celebrity, flying through the sky with her sarcastic cat jiji while trying to figure out what it means to grow up without losing your magic. it’s a deeply whimsical, happy journey filled with the scent of osono’s fresh bakery bread, bright floral dresses, and the quiet joy of running errands for lonely neighbors. even when doubts creep in, the story is never heavy handed with its conflicts. instead, it settles into a comforting quiet rhythm of self-discovery, showing us that the most profound magic isn’t about perfection or being the most impressive, but about the slow, gentle ways we choose to show up for the people we love. the choice to move through your days with softness and an open heart.

this book highlights a pure happiness, focusing on the whimsical beauty of growing up without losing your sense of original wonder. it’s about the intricacies of a life built on small kindnesses and cozy independent moments, where even the challenges of changing seasons melt into something sweet and reassuring, like a warm cup of tea on a rainy afternoon.

The volume was average with new stories each chapter and small characters' development. The atmosphere was a bit depressing as Kiki had to deal with sad stories or with her own doubts. I suppose the book will entertain nicely the kids who enjoyed the 1st volume, but as an adult, I found it mostly boring.

I didn't know until this year that Kiki's Delivery Service (a long-time favorite story for me!) was actually just the beginning of a series of books about my beloved young witch Kiki as she continues to explore her independent journey away from home as part of her witch development. But when I saw that KIKI AND THE NEW MAGIC was going to be translated for an English release, I was eager to get my hands on it... and I'm so glad that I ended up finding it as charming as the previous book, albeit in a different way.

While the first novel focuses on Kiki finding a new place to settle in and to discover what her witch-related abilities can contribute to her new community and home, this second novel focuses on something a little different - specifically, it follows Kiki through changes in her relationship with herself and with the others around her, changes that occur because she's continuing to grow in response to the environment and experiences she's been having. I like that Kadono chose to focus on something a little different; it sets this novel apart for sure, and it feels like a natural progression in Kiki's journey! That said, it's also fun that we get a similar structure in that there are still some magical shenanigans and errands that Kiki finds herself involved in. It definitely taps into the fond nostalgia that fans of the first novel will be feeling, and brings the whimsy and charm that one expects to encounter from a story in this world.

KIKI AND THE NEW MAGIC is a lovely little addition to the world of Kiki's Delivery Service. While it didn't quite tickle my fancy as much as the original novel did (and to be absolutely fair, the Ghibli film contributes to those feelings too), it still was delightful fun to read -- and a story that readers of all ages who like a little magic in their coming-of-age tales will appreciate.

Wieder sehr niedlich.

Super cute and whimsical read for fans of Kiki’s Delivery Service! I imagine it’d be an extra cute one to read to young kids, but it’s a fun time for readers of all ages. I enjoyed reading it like a short story collection, reading just a few chapters at a time.

This second book wasn’t as fun and whimsical as the first one (maybe because I was forced to read the German translation). The newly introduced characters as well as the delivery adventures that Kiki went on were very forgettable and inconsequential.

Thank you, NetGalley & Random House, for the eARC of Kiki and the New Magic 🧹🐈‍⬛🌙📻✨

What a cute and whimsical story! I heard quite a few people say they were disappointed with this book since it wasn’t as enjoyable as the first one. That, I’m not sure about, because I won’t lie, I didn’t read the first book. But I was able to pick up this one and still understand what was going on and I loved it! I read through it fast.

I think this book had some great character development throughout for Kiki and I loved Jiji, of course! Kiki went through many challenging deliveries in this novel and the writing definitely showed her progression with her getting to know herself better, which I appreciated. I will say, some of the parts seemed to happen fast and chaotically, which felt a little hard to keep up with. But it had some lovely portrayals of acts of kindness, which was heartwarming. 🥰

This is a great book for young readers and adults alike! It was lovely and such a good read when you need something a little magical. I will definitely be re-reading this with my daughter, and then we will continue the rest of this series as it comes out! I’m hooked! I may be biased, though, as I love Kiki’s Delivery Service! ✨

When I was a little girl I watched the Studio Ghibli movie Kiki's Delivery Service and loved it. It wasn't until I was an adult that I discovered it was actually based on a book. Truthfully, I can't remember if I ever did read it. But despite discovering a book existed before the movie, I somehow managed to miss that it's actually a series!

This book was so whimsical, as is to be expected, but there is a deepness to it, as well as heart. Kiki is a year older after starting her delivery service and she starts discovering new feelings that leave her confused, struggling to fly. As she navigates her emotions, she meets a variety of people whose stories and deliveries help her figure things out. There was one person she met whose story was quite sad and written in a gentle, less obvious way.

I liked the way each chapter was a different delivery, but managed to tie into the overall theme. As the story progressed, the deliveries connected more into what she herself was going through. Some of the people she meets for a delivery show up again, and there was actually one I thought would appear for at least a third time but unfortunately did not. I thought something was going there, but who knows what the next book holds? I look forward to reading the next translation!

Thank you to the publisher via NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I think I need to reread the first one. . . its been a hot minute to say the least. I had to remind myself that this series was originally written in Japanese and translated into English so alot of elements didn't flow and got lost in the translation. As well as the fact that this is a children's series so some things will simply never be explained. Okay now that that's out of the way, there were certain short stories that carried the same heart and deeper meaning of depression and burn out like the movie. HOWEVER some of these people be taking advantage of my girl and I wont stand by that. Kiki stand up do something girl please

I've been waiting 6 years for this book. I've been wanting to read this series since I found out it was a book. Finally got the chance when the first book got a new translation. I'm not sure if the 2nd book was ever translated into English. Either way I have it now. Its just as cozy as the first one. You ca tell that the movie pulled from this book as well. I hope they translate all of them. I know 3 is suppose to come out early next year.
