Their chemistry could make their show a monster hit — if the monsters don’t kill them first.

On the surface, psychologist Audrey Barrett is the perfect co-host for Michael Covenant’s new cable series, Project Demon Hunters. She’s smart, articulate, and photogenic as hell.

There’s just one problem. Michael has made it his mission to stay out of her orbit. Thanks to his producer’s stubborn insistence, however, there’s no avoiding her — which means Michael will have to bury his secrets even deeper.

After the tragedy that took her parents more than ten years earlier, Audrey has kept herself on the fringe of the paranormal world. But with her small therapy practice floundering, the money the show’s offering is too good to pass up.

From the moment they step inside a rundown mansion, things start flying: sparks between Audrey and Michael, not to mention furniture hurled by something determined to make sure their investigation fails. Worse, evil seems to have followed Audrey home — and she discovers why the man at her side on camera is the last man she can trust in real life.

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

Psychic Michael Covenant's producers want him to hire psychologist Audrey Barrett to be the Scully to his Mulder for his new paranormal investigation TV show. However, when Audrey is exposed to the creepy Whitcomb mansion, her previously unknown psychic powers come to the forefront, leading the demons to target her to keep the pair from shutting down their demonic gateway.

This is a well-written paranormal mystery/romance. The characters are interesting, and while I would have liked the author to go into more depth about the background of the house and its inhabitants, the plot isn't bad. Then comes the ending (keeping it spoiler free) which had me nearly jumping out of my seat. I'm totally reading the second book in the series ASAP.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Unquiet Souls by Christine Pope is the introduction to her new series - Project Demon Hunters. Pay attention because this book is going to read fast. This heart stopping page turner is a plunge down the rabbit hole and you're going to love the trip! While I have come to expect an excellent read with all the heat and romance, drama and angst, love and, well you get it, from Christine Pope, this book has just taken a left turn into the Twilight Zone. There are quite a few "OMG" moments coupled with "I Need To Turn On ALL The Lights" moments. I loved this book and can't wait to read Unbound Souls (Book 2). There is a spicy sex scene, so Mature Readers Please. The rest of the book is scary, funny, sad and scary good. There is a cliff hanger setup for Book 2.
If you read nothing else by Christine Pope you MUST read this book! Trust me, once you start... you will not want to stop!

This honest and voluntary review was made possible by reading an advance copy.

I greatly enjoyed this first entry in a new paranormal series by Christine Pope. I was drawn in from the start by the characters and the premise. Audrey is a skeptical psychologist asked to cohost a "reality" TV series in spooky houses. Michael is the host, and surely a charletan, or is he? I thought it was spooky, but appreciated that it wasn't gross or terrifying. It's quite different from others I have read from her. I honestly hadn't enjoyed reading about djinns or demons as sympathetic characters in some of her other works. This had quite a different flavor. Looking forward to the next in this series!

This is clearly not a genre for me - I find ghost hunter tv shows ridiculous and this book did nothing to make me think otherwise. There was no chemistry between the characters IMO and they were both rather underdeveloped. I didn’t enjoy the writing style and skipped large sections just to get to the end that was also underwhelming.

Mystified by the high ratings. I got this book for free and thought maybe I got an early draft or partial book. Barely anything happens, and the pace is very slow. On top of that, nothing is resolved and the ending is a cliffhanger.

It should be in a horror genre rather than paranormal, it focused more on scary stuff rather than otherworldly. Or maybe it's only me...

The main heroine is so not consistent, she doesn't believe in ghost but actually believe and only act so. I don't know why she would hate the hero only because the difference of believe, when she was actually a psychologist. Who should know better.

The only thing that keeps me going is the idea that both of them in the reality TV show. Seriously horror is never my thing to begin with

I wanted to like this story, I really did. But I’m just not really into Pope’s style of writing. This is the second time I’ve had to DNF one of her books. Not because it’s not a good story line. Or one that is completely lacking, I just find that the writing style edges a bit more towards telling, not showing. And I get so bogged down in this that I can’t get swept away by the words. Which, of course, means that I can’t really get into the storyline. But, this may be a good book for other people who appreciate her style a little bit more.

From the cover, Unquiet Souls looks like most Urban Fantasy series.  Ominous dark background, gorgeous male and female duo in a defense pose in the foreground. It's a beautiful cover. The colors are dark but still draw you win, the characters on the front look battle ready. At this point, I'm hooked.  Urban Fantasy is my favorite genre anyway and I read a lot of it.  I was ready for witches, shifters, and vampires.  What I got was even better.

Demons.  Of course, the series is called "Project Demon Hunters", so any reasonably capable person should have been able to figure that one out really quick BUT, not me apparently (laughs at self).  Anyway, our heroine, Audrey, is a professional psychologist with a passion and reputation for real work within Paranormal Psychology. She even did research at the famous Rhine Institute*.  She is all about the science behind what goes bump in the night and proving that the mind is a powerful and sometimes scary thing.

Michael, our hero, is a professional paranormal investigator (ie Ghosthunters but less drama, more focus on the actual investigating and banishing).  He is the opposite of Audrey when it comes to the scary stuff. He believes it's real and has seen some crazy stuff! He's a lecturer and writer of "non-fiction" paranormal occurrences, which annoys the scientifically minded Audrey.

Michael is offered a six-episode pilot series for a demon hunting reality show.  He's more than willing to play the lead but balks at the suggestion of Audrey as his co-host.  He doesn't think she'll play ball and he's pretty sure she wouldn't want to do something so base as shock television to ruin her academic reputation.  The producer insists, Audrey or no one, so Michael complies.

Audrey would rather die than do a television show,  and even refuses Michael's first offer.  She reconsiders and ultimately agrees to do the show when they dangle a large amount of money up front.  Strapped for cash (who isn't these days), Audrey sees this as an easy way to get ahead and help with her research plans in the future.

Their first assignment is an old mansion near Audrey's hometown.  Immediately things start to get hairy and scary.  Christine writes really good and terrifying scenes. During the course of the investigation, Michael and Audrey get close, stumble upon a real demon, and things just snowball from there.  A lot is happening as we race toward the end and I loved every second of it.

The characters were well rounded and I felt like I could relate to them, (not hunting demons, but other stuff like Audrey wanting to be respected within her field but also needing to make a living) and enjoyed spending time in their world.  Pope is a veteran writer at this point and it shows.  Everything, in my opinion, was perfection.  I'm glad I had book two to dive into immediately upon finishing this one!

I felt it...

Despite a love of paranormal, I'm a bit of a wuss. I can't watch certain things after dark, can't read certain things before bed, and my daughter has been pre-viewing anything possibly "horror" before I watch it so she can mute it and tell me to close my eyes while she summarizes the scene since she was 12. I enjoy the stories, but I get heebie-jeebies.

I picked up this book to relax before bed one night. NOT a book for me to read before bed! And I mean that as compliment to the author. I made it to the first encounter with the dining room and switched to non-fiction before bed. I got back into this one at lunch the next day & couldn't put it down (daylight...I can read it in daylight without a chaperone).

It gets into the goods quickly and effectively sucks you in. There's the right amount of story questions to keep you wanting to turn the page for answers, but not so many you can't follow where you are with an idea of where you're going. I didn't want to put it down.

The pacing is just about perfect - slow and detailed where it needs to be for as long as it needs to be, but moderate and moving along the bulk of the story. The action scenes are quick and suspenseful. The details are set up before the real action so once it starts, it's going and you're going with it. Beautifully done.

The plot is well crafted and kept me engaged. The characters are believable and likable. And from a marketing standpoint, the last scene works. I spent hours seeing what's going to happen to Audrey & Michael today instead of doing what I was supposed to do - I did make it to the grocery store though, needed snacks for book 2!

Audrey Barrett's life as a psychologist takes a sudden turn to the supernatural when she's hired by Michael Covenant to do a reality show on demons. Despite her disbelief in the supernatural, the pay for the 6-week show was an offer she couldn't refuse. Unknown to herself, she is sensitive to demons, as she found out to her great dismay at the first shooting of the series. The house they were shooting in was indeed possessed by demons. Now the demons seem to have followed Audrey home. This has turned into a real horror story; she is hunted and haunted by demons. Audrey discovers she is truly psychic, something she never expected or exhibited before. A spark developing between Audrey and Michael, despite their original negative opinions of each other, ignites explosively. Secrets get revealed, throwing cold water on the budding romance.
This is a fast-paced story, that gets scary pretty quickly. It starts out sounding like a schlock Cable reality show, but turns into the real thing. The writing is good, the descriptions are vivid, and Audrey's hesitation for romance, fear, uncertainty, terror and courage are nicely captured.

This review is of Unquiet Souls by Christine Pope.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
Absolutely amazing! This is the first book in a new series by one of my favorite authors and she doesn’t characters are well developed and have complex back stories that you will never guess. The plot starts as what appears to be another reality show on the supernatural. Only this time instead of hunting ghosts and hauntings, they are hunting demons and possessions. I know what you are going to say. Demons aren’t real, but neither are ghosts, right? Haven’t you ever walked into an old house and knew you just had to get out of there or get sick to your stomach in a certain location when no one else does? Is it ghosts or demons? Do you really want to find out?
It’s a great read that will make you want to keep the lights on. The ending will either have you running for the hills or screaming for more! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Fools rush in where Angela fear to tread

An excellent start to a brilliant series.
Audrey is a psychologist who keeps afloat by helping people with their mental health issues, however her real love is the paranormal. When she is invited to co-host a show to rid a house of demons , the idea of a paycheck large enough to help pay her bills seems a godsend.
Orphaned at fifteen when her parents are killed, she has had plenty of problems of her own. The other co-host of the show is Michael Covenant, a entomologist with an unknown background. Sparks fly between them and they try to keep things professional as they work.
After spending time together Audrey finds out a secret about him she would rather not know. Can they work through it or will it be the end for them?
A must read for all lovers of paranormal romance and suspense.

I must admit that I had a little difficulty getting into Christine Pope’s Book 1 “Unquiet Soul” of her new series “Project Demon Hunters”, but once it fell into place, I just loved the storyline and how it came together. Psychologist Audrey Barrett is perfect for a new cable series, Project Demon Hunters, but Michael Covenant, her co-host, will be staying out of her way. There were so many interesting scenes it felt like a revolving, emotional door. The plot is great with lots of action and tension, and an excellent potential in the storyline for romance to happen. Even though this contains a cliffhanger ending that leads into Book 2, I can’t wait until it’s out. Christine Pope’s new series is the start of a different fantastic journey, and I cannot wait to see where it leads.

Fab new series!

Rapid paced, unputdownable and downright scary in bits! Audrey is the perfect foil for Michael. She is an educated psychologist with a personal interest in the paranormal. She has suffered traumatic loss and had a kinda psychic blip that she had to hide for years. Michael is the TV and Media goto guy for the paranormal. But he seems to have some very deep secrets that he does not want Audrey to uncover!

Always be on your toes when dealing with evil - you never know when it might follow you home! Defo read this with the lights on!!!

Warning there is a cliffhanger to lead into book 2 (dammit!!)

This book got off to a slow start for me and that is unusual for a Christine Pope novel. Once the background was built though I was all in. Audrey and Michael’s character growth is well written and the author does a good job with her surprise revelations. I appreciated knowing up front this story will be continued in forth coming books so the cliffhanger was not an irritating shock rather it was a great ending. The further reveal of character history was an interesting and intriguing surprise…lots to look forward to in the next book which thankfully comes out in March so not a long wait.

I’m not much into paranormal reads and this one really didn’t do anything to draw me in more. The paranormal aspect was light and interesting enough to keep me reading. It was interesting to see how religion and the paranormal were intertwined.

I had a couple of issues with this book. First, the author seemed to have an issue with food and looks because every time Audrey had a cup of coffee the “little bit of sugar she allowed herself” was mentioned. It was annoying. The “romance” lasted all of five seconds and then it was over. The other subplot line of Michael’s past felt rushed and unnecessary

Wow, this was an amazing book. It sounded interesting so I decided to take a chance on reading this. I had never read anything by Christine Pipe before. I am now hooked and plan on reading more in this awesome series as well as her other books.

It moved along at a great pace, has characters that will grab you and keep you wanting more. You cannot help but fall in love with them.

This book needs to be read, you will be not be sorry. Once you start you are sucked in and there is no putting it down until you are done.

This i found engaging and explosive straight from the start, even a little creepy in some places, which i have to say not many books have that effect on me! But i am so eager to read the next novel now just to see who the dark stranger that gets into the Lincoln is? Spooky! Actually that person reminds me of the creepy guy in Poltergeist who sings that god awful tune when he shows up! (yeah you know the guy i mean) Shivers creeping down my spine as i write! has it got cold in here? Yep, see you!

I downloaded Unquiet Souls, book 1 of the Project Demon Hunters series, as a free ebook from Amazon. I'll start by saying, this book had a unique premise that caught my attention and bumped it up my reading list. While the open chapters started out really good, I didn't care for all the surprises and new gifts that seemed to pop up conveniently. I didn't care for Michael much either. A good read, but the couple dynamic doesn't work for me. I've read and enjoyed other books by this author, so I'll try another series by her.

Chills ran up my spine as I read this new book. I honestly had to read it during the day and with all the lights on. A great start to a new series by Christine Pope. I’m not a fan of horror or paranormal, but it is an interesting premise. The cliffhanger, ugh, I’m desperate to know the rest. With well developed characters and an enthralling plot, I’m excited for the next book to get here. I did receive an ARC.

Creepy, addictive and a splash of steam

I really liked the twist on ghost hunting shows- didn't trash them but certainly acknowledged that some of them are singer-songwriter and brought in demons. Absolutely loved where the story went, the tension between characters, anxiousness and trepidation from the sites, and psychic t. I was pulled in from the start and pretty sure I'll binge read this series!

Would you face a demon to pay your bills??

After going into her fall back position, Audrey realizes that not only will she not be able to work in the profession that she was interested in, she can barely make her bills. So when the famous Micheal Covenant asks her to be his co-host, of a new show, about demons inhabiting homes, or other structures, she doesn't feel like she can say no.

An enjoyable trip as Audrey discovers through a very difficult process that she is psychic. I thought the author was doing a great job revealing who Audrey was, then she’d take an out of character action. I ended up feeling that I didn’t know her at all when the story ended. And the story had a cliffhanger ending, which I don’t like.

Has potential, would be more likely to look into next book if there hadn’t been a really unsurprising twist that pov character responds very immaturely to. I hate it when characters can’t just talk things out like adults.
