I remembered adoring this book as a child — let's face it, it was basically Maggie-crack, as it was all about time travel and dogs and 14th century Scotland. It also had cute illustrations of puppies and men in kilts. Looking back at it now, I can see where my early fixation with Robert Bruce came from, as well as my obsession with chivalry.
Anyway, I just dug it out of my shelves and read it to Thing 1 & Thing 2, who are now 7 and 8 years old. They were absolutely delighted and Thing 2 declared that it was the best book ever written besides THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET.
So that is my unofficial review. Maggie-crack and also, the best book ever written besides THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET, according to a 7-year-old boy. Worth tracking down.
I thoroughly enjoyed the full package this book offered! The story has a creative side-world that mixes with ours to help children in need, there's a great plug for loving history, some time travel to see Robert the Bruce of Scotland, and a few good moral lessons to learn from!
Parsifal is a Poddley. And he's on the Poddley Emergency Squad, which mean he is hurriedly sent out to children who need immediate assistance. When he arrives at the hospital and sees Colin laying despondently in bed, Parsifal knows he'll have to give his best for this case to turn around and get Colin joyful again.
Great story and such delicious illustrations to boot!

Cleanliness: Some "fairy tale" type magic, for time travel, a made up people, a short scene with a wizard who disappears. Gosh, Gee and the like are said a couple of times.

With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

Remembered fondly from my mother reading it aloud to me. The littles enjoyed it: a boy in need of a friend, time travel, mysterious elf-like helper, dog story (you know what that means) and all!
Too cute! Like 1960s Magic Tree House, but with an alien and a puppy. However, my favorite part about this book is that it was part of my grandmother's fifth grade classroom library. (I would recommend the book to 2nd–3rd graders today, though.)
I read this book as a child and loved it. The story is so beautiful, and has wonderful lessons about life that both adults and children can appreciate. I have to admit I cried when I read this story to my grandchildren. It is a wonderful book. If you love dogs, children, time travel and magic, you can't go wrong reading this amazing story.
This book touched me far deeper than I thought a children's book could. In a lot of ways it was therapy, having lost my dear cat this Summer. A tale about a boy who lost his dog during an accident, and gets to travel back in time to meet Sir Robert the Bruce and his dog Ban. Exquisitely written, and timeless!
Short and sweet. I’m surprised this 1962 children’s book hasn’t been dramatized. I liked it when I was in elementary school; the re-read showed it’s held up.
