Especially someone who is so completely at odds with everything he’s known. Could she be the woman who offers something else – something sincere – something true? Just when he thinks there is a chance of a happy future, events unfurl which threaten those he cares for the most. No one is going to be left unscathed… Lady Lou the Highwayman is a Regency romance topped with a generous dose of humour, action, and tears. If you like simmering chemistry, fast-paced adventures, and strong characters, then you'll love Audrey Harrison's Regency tale.
Audrey Harrison was born about two hundred years too late. She wants to belong to a time when men were men and women were dressed in gowns and could float, simper and sigh.
In the real world she has always longed to write, writing a full manuscript when she was fourteen years old. Work, marriage and children got in the way as they do and it was only when an event at work landed her in hospital that she decided to take stock. One Voluntary Redundancy later, she found that the words and characters came to the forefront and the writing began in earnest.
Her ideal would be to write Regency Romances, but more modern characters are insisting on being heard, hence the release of’ ‘A Very Modern Lord’, a contemporary romance.
So, although at home more these days, the housework is still neglected and tea is still late on the table, but she has an understanding family, who usually shake their heads at her and sigh. That is a sign of understanding, isn’t it?
Being desperate to save her sisters, Lou does what she has to do and decides to become a highwayman. She chooses the wrong vehicle and ends up shot by Simon who once he finds out she is a woman is remorseful. He brings her to his home and he and his sister help her recover. Then they find out about her family and the story continues. A good read and good hea.
Lou and her two sisters came to London to object to their older half brother selling their full brothers home and leaving them homeless while Cameron was off to war. Running out of funds Lou turned to robbery. She was shot while trying to rob Simon. When he found out she was a woman he took her home. An intriguing story.
This is an enjoyable read, occasionally disrupted by unnecessary hyphens, about three damsels in distress. Lou, the eldest, in trying to keep the twins, Marianne and Heather, safe, resorts to highway robbery. When she attempts to rob Simon and his sister, Helena, she is shot by Simon.
Meanwhile, her sisters are left alone, and they are out of food, worried and frightened. They are unaware that Lou is in serious trouble and fear they have been abandoned.
Will Lou escape the gallows? What will happen to Marianne and Heather?
Enjoyed this fastpaced novel with it's many twists and suspenseful moments. Marriane's trip and Lou's adventures along with the men in their lives make for a good read. Had a well rounded ending of characters, with an epilogue of what happened to them.
for such a short story there are way too many storylines to read about. And to top it, the supposed protagonist, Lady Lou, is very unprominent in her own book. I felt that the story focused on her two sisters and brother way too much. And ALL of them are prone to instalove. Like, you met a person an hour ago, they are unconscious but you are sure you want to marry them or you meet someone at a park, have a stroll of an hour or so... and you'd give your life for theirs. Also, the life of a highwayman she led? Non-existent.
In other words, not really my cuppa and I am glad it was a kindle freebie because otherwise I'd be asking for a refund.
In Lady Lou, the Highwayman, we have another Regency Romance story. Ms. Harrison has crafted a complex story line that includes action, humor and tears. Her characters are multi-dimensional. She opens with a scene of a highway robbery by a dark highwayman set in 1809. We meet two dynamic protagonists. Lady Lou Drummond resorts to highway robbery to keep her sisters and herself from becoming destitute. She is bold, stubborn and impetuous. Her actions set off a chain of events contributing to the story's tension. Then we have the male protagonist, Simon Ashton, the Earl of Garswood. Like Lady Lou, he is bold, brave, dashingly handsome but not so impetuous. It is his carriage that she stops to rob. The Earl is the one who stops the robbery by shooting the unknown highwayman. Upon realizing that the highwayman is a woman, the Earl's life enters a topsy-turvy spin.
The supporting characters are also well developed. There is the Earl's sister, Lady Helena Ashton. He becomes the antagonist in this story. We also meet the rest of the Drummond family: Marianne and Heather and their brother Captain Cameron Drummond a soldier fighting with Wellesley in Portugual. Ms. Harrison created strong antagonists in the Earl's friend, Lord Henry Roby, the Earl of Ince and the Drummond's family half brother, Lord Duncan Drummond. Along with the protagonists, these characters to move the character-driven plot line along. I appreciate how Ms. Harrison uses intrigue and a bit of revenge to create tension and thus, highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy Regency Romance stories.
Apparently everyone in London Society has something to hide.
Great strong women characters. Plot twists that kept the stories from being cookie cutters of many Regency Romances. Even with four simultaneous love stories introduced, each developed on its own as well as played a part in the others.
Also, author stuck to more traditional Regency Romance where most desires were restrained until marriage. I know some readers want explicit details of what goes on between love interests; however I appreciate being able to use my own imagination.
Only minor complaint is having two female characters with “H” names—was a little hard sometimes to remember which lady and her relationship to the men in the story (e.g. is this her brother or love interest).
A page turner in a way because it was well written. This book was written as a launching pad for the others that would come after it; unfortunately this one hasn't been structure properly because our Lady Lou took a backseat too often, meaning the overlapping sub-stories obscured what ought to be about Lady Lou and Simon and their happy ending. Her character was underdeveloped and subsequently her relationship with Simon less than convincing. Overall, a nice break from scholarly articles that I've to read for the last 6 weeks.
what a story!! The author keeps the twists and turn you don't see, coming. an excellent plot, heart wrenching situation, full of action, assumptions, misery, happiness, A must read.
I loved this book and have read the book with Helena and Cameron's story. Both were written well have great story lines and characters. I recommend this author to all.
I loved the building of the characters from the first few pages. The author develops loveable characters and situations that keep you turning the pages!
Thankfully, the cover I saw was not the one pictured, or I never would have read it. I did read it to cross off a book in my book challenge, however, and I'm glad I did.
When the story opens a carriage with Simon, Helena and Henry are taken at gunpoint by a highwayman. Simon didn't take that lightly and shot the presumed man.
He presumed wrong.
Instead, he found a lovely woman. Simon and Helena take her to their home to save her, and in her fever, she calls out Marianne and Heather . They soon find out that those names belong to the lady in questions twin younger sisters. Simon finds them and brings them to his home. They do not tell the young ladies how they actually met their sister Lou. Soon, their brother Cameron, who is on leave from the war in Portugal, is there as well.
While Lou is recovering from her, would Helena finally have female friends and take advantage by introducing them and going for rides in Hyde Park That is where Marianne meets Captain Joseph, with whom she is immediately smitten.
There is a lot going on in this book. Helena becomes smitten with Cameron. He returns the feelings but will not return them in the way she wants because he has to return to war. Oh, I just know their love story will be one for the ages.
Henry, who was thought to be Simon's friend, wanted Helena for himself but only in a selfish way that she was for looks and the ton, but he would have a mistress. He told this to Simon. Believe what they admit because what they won't admit would be so much worse.
When the girls find out what actually happened with Lou, it sort of spurs Marianne to take her future into her own hands. This part of the story was absolutely gripping. Maybe I need to find some ship romances??
The epilogue was more perfect than I could have dreamed up, and it makes me want to jump into the next book.
Didn’t finish after page 115. This book is fine. It just feels more like an overview of a few stories. Nothing goes very deep because it’s told in anyone and everyone’s pov so we are hearing a few different stories from all the different people.
There are a couple of romances so neither can be fleshed out well because we are working on two within a short book. And one of the “romances” consists of the love interests having maybe three very forgettable and short conversations and then being willing to marry eachother. That isn’t an exaggeration either that’s actually what happens.
I just lost interest a bit. There’s not much suspense or intrigue. No real mystery or wondering since we know what all of the characters are thinking and what they’re all doing and going through. It’s nothing bad, I just love romance so I don’t want the love interests to be in love after barely interacting. I don’t see the point of that really.
A bit too much back and forth between different characters. Marianne's story could be a separate book. Also, I felt the author did a lot of "telling" rather than "showing". Too many info dumps instead of gradually bringing information into the story. I did like the characters and plot, though editing and such could be improved upon.I did think the characters were too young and immature to be thinking of marriage but I guess that was the times. Situations they got themselves in were a bit ridiculous. Especially, Lou. She could have written to Cameron or to her aunt (who Cameron said they could go to), but instead of asking for help she turns to highway robbery? I didn't like that part of the book. The situation should have been more dire for her to be so desperate. She had other legal options.
Wait, what? What just happened? The author went into such detailed build-up about each of the Drummond sisters and then just...wrapped up the story in the epilogue? I was really enjoying this book. I loved all the different stories and characters, but then for it to just end? It was almost like the author got bored and just wanted it to end. Yes, she wrapped up Lou's story well enough, but considering how much was dedicated to Marianne and just gets a epilogue comment? How important Henry was and for him to be so dismissed? I'm saddened. At least Heather has her own book.
Overall, great first part of book, but really disappointing end.
A nice read but too many interwoven stories means you can't focus on one particular couple. All nice characters although some of the words used to describe one of the characters thoughts was borderline racist (why would anyone be ashamed of their own mother's bloodline and refer to it as tainted! - simply because she is from a different race) even keeping the period in mind ; it's their own mother they are thinking of!!! maybe better editing can sort that out. That's the reason I have deducted a star, otherwise this would have been 4 stars.
I fell INSTANTLY in love with these characters and was especially entertained by Lou herself...she is the one I could relate to the closest; having been a tomboy my whole life and...well...mostly Scottish😊 I relate to her fiery attitude and lack of "ladylikeness". She made me smile, in agreement, a lot. Her act now, think later spunkiness along with her tough on the outside, soft on the inside characteristics really spoke to the soul of my being. She is just my kind'a chick and I can't wait to see what she blunders next😁
So many typos even though credit is given to the proof reader at the end. And the formatting is practically non-existent. Getting past that, there is very little description of location, sometimes none, and often too little of the characters as wer. That made the lesser characters uninteresting enough that I didn't even read the sneak preview for the next book in the series. One was quite enough.
I had a hard time getting into this one. There was so much going on yet I feel like nothing happens. It is three love stories rolled into one but they’re all insta-love so there is no build up or drama. Also, Lou and her sisters go from scrape to scrape and blame each other for the outcome. Kisses only
Simon never should have been traveling so late on the road. Too tempting for thieves. I'm sure he never thought that this was how he would meet the woman he would fall in love with. And he and his sister meeting her family would change their lives and those of their friends forever ❤️. A really great story 👍❣️
I believe this book was well written and only found a couple of text errors. Personally, I guess I was expecting more out of red-haired, Scottish lassoes. The wallflower act ran out of entertainment and I basically just read through to finish. The last chapter basically condensed several backstories.
Great story wonderful story line great characters. This is Lou and Simon's story. She's turned to a highwayman. But when she tries to rob Simon's coach things go wrong, she gets shot and he realizes he, s. Shot a woman. It's not in his nature to do such a thing. So he takes her to his Estate for care. And love blooms. Thank you ❤️
A very interesting start. A true romantic story that has very good characters interacting with one another. I was very happy to see the results. A good story, thank you, Jack.
I thoroughly enjoy this story. Lots of characters and emotions throughout. It was a story that was easy to follow in spite of so many different situations. Read and enjoy!!
This story had it all. The damsels in distress, the mean villain, the thief, the handsome male to the rescue. More handsome men for each of the damsels in distress. Enough suspense at the end that the reader looks for a follow-up book.
Love Audrey Harrison novels! You know you're going to get well.rounded characters and interesting situations. Her characters are always memorable and you genuinely root for them. Looking forward to reading Saving Captain Drummond, the next in the series.
