Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.
Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.
Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.
This was shockingly good. These were all new back up stories for the Classic X-Men reprint comic series, and they were very good. John Bolton did the art, which gave it a more "human" feel and less of a "superhero" feel, and that worked perfectly because the stories were more down to earth for the most part.
If you are looking for stories that explore the personalities of the X-Men and flesh out the characters, this is something you'll enjoy. There's some action as well, but these stories go much deeper.
Back up stories for classic Uncanny X-Men reprints. It is strange if you read these with the reprint stories because you see Claremont as a fresh writer contrasted with Claremont when he started writing with his "isms." The best part about these stories is the John Bolton art.
I would also rather see stories that fill in past classic stories if the publisher wants to do limited series rather than see awkward solo books and unnecessary new characters or weird anachronistic relaunches (the original X-Men as bratty teens on cell phones). These stories are a great addition to the chronology.
As the title says, this is a collection of vignettes ("between the panels" stories as Claremont refers to them in the introduction). Overall, well done with some stories tying in peripherally to larger story arcs and some working as standalones.
Vela vybornych pribehov. Ako Thunderbirdov brat vystrojil pokreb po druhom dodrodruzstve novych X-menov, panska jazda Wolverina a Nightcrawlera, priprava Jean na prve rande so Scottom (totalne bez slova, Claremont si musel strasne upierat), Magnettov origin a zaverecne spolocne kupanie Jean a Misty s delfinim defile. Vyborne. Skoda ze sa neda dat 4.5
***This is a 2nd reading, I never wrote a review the first time***
I just finished my second read of this, and I have to say, I'm just as impressed. This is the depth into characters that most of the modern comics miss when they're working on major 'events' or crossovers, or ways to sell more. Claremont sticks to fleshing out characters we already know in stories that are believable and well drawn, authentic to their era in the early 80s. I really liked the art because it wasn't so hyper overdrawn and kinetic, it was just raw and left more room for story to do work. Stories about Wolverine, Jean, the Phoenix, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, all stories that do a great job of reinforcing the 'we're the same as you all we want is acceptance' but it never works. Great stuff, I really like what's been done here, and it's just as good as I remember
It's somewhat interesting to read the stories of the X-Men between panels, but they lack the normal excitement and intrigue of the X-Men. The best one is "A Love Story," telling the story of Jean getting ready for a date with Scott through only the art- there are no speech or thought bubble or narration. The second best is "A Fire in the Night," Magneto's story of how he lost his wife Magda. The Phoenix stories and the one featuring Emma Frost are also okay.
I've been waiting for this book for nearly 20 years. These back-up stories are the best thing Marvel put out int he late 80s, and along with it's companion volume these shorts add depth and vision to the early adventures of the "all-new, all-different" X-men. I wish they'd continued past issue 25 with these, but I certainly understand why they stopped
These hold up surprisingly well for what amounts to being a collection of short stories about the X-Men. There are some really fascinating story included that really help expand the early days of the new team.
